Product Description
There is a growing realization that most learning takes place among kids before they enter kindergarten, when every boy and girl's drive to discover is strongest.

And in a world where reading means succeeding, you can inspire a lifelong love of books and language in your child at home with Mommy, Teach Me to Read!. The easy-to-learn, fun-to-follow reading program and activities presented here will help you build a foundation of joyful learning on which your child can continue to build in the coming years.

Author Barbara Curtis, a Montessori teacher and mother of twelve, uses a wealth of common sense to dispel the mystique of professionalism that surrounds the teaching of children and shares insight about each child's God-given potential for learning, while helping parents discover their own potential as teachers.

"Don't invest another dollar in reading materials before you've finished reading this book," she advises. "You may be very surprised at how simple it actually is to produce an excellent and enthusiastic reader." ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Got to be something better out there.
I bought this book based on a Internet reviews and I've got to say it was not very good.Like a previous poster said, there are several comments in the book which amount to "kids are God's gift and aren't they precious miracles" and so on....I expected to the book to be about an academic approach to teaching reading and more scholarly methods to achieve this and it just wasn't there. I don't understand the glowing reviews unless they wanted to teach religion.

5-0 out of 5 stars For our children today!
This book is just what I was looking for! Highly recommended for parents who care!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok
Some helpful tips, but you have to search for them - most of the book consists of the author bragging about her children and her parenting skills.A better book is "Teach Your Child to Read in 10 Minutes a Day"

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
This was a BIG disappointment. First, most of the content turned out not to be new information with respect to actually teaching my child to read.Second, I wish they had indicated on the cover or somewhere viewable BEFORE purchasing the book that she has very specific religious beliefs that she natters about. This is a HUGE turn-off, especially since it has no direct connection with teaching a child to read.I won't buy anything from this author again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really works for children under 6!
I originally bought this book to teach my Kindergartner to read.As a homeschooling mother of six, I'd already taught my three oldest children to read, but thought there must be some tricks to help my new reluctant reader.

I did find some good reading activities, which I tried and my Kindergartner's reading skills improved immediately. But what caught my attention was Barbara Curtis' recommendation that you teach your child during a window of learning before they reached Kindergarten age.

I thought it was worth a try.I have a 4 year old, and when I started working with him, he didn't know his letter sounds or alphabet.I took the book's suggestions, and tried teaching him his letter sounds before teaching him the alphabet.

I read him the same story daily for months at a time, and taught him little rhymes to help him remember his letter sounds.I tried the reading box, which Barbara Curtis recommends to help children make the leap from concrete to abstract when learning to read.He is now able to read beginning books with help. The best part is that he is able to sound out the words much easier than his 6 year old sister can, because we took advantage of the development window!

I cannot praise this book highly enough.I also bought Mommy Teach Me at the same time, and the two work very nicely together. If you have preschool aged children, buy this book today! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Little Book Ever
Do you want to get your early childhood students writing and thinking? Then you must get this little book, it has many ideas for helping young writers get started on creating their own songs, poems and stories.Old favorites are used to build a scaffold for kids "to hang on their own words".If you are tired of pencil and paper pages everyday then this book is for you.It will take a little time to get started but the results will be fantastic. Your students will understand spelling, grammar, reading and writing much more than textbook assignments can give them. You will need blank word cards and chart paper then you and your kids will be ready to go.Oh, also lots of great children's literature.(Which you can get from Amazon.com) It will be fun and rewarding for you and your kids.Don't forget to have them illustrate their creations. And share them in author's chair. The results will be phenomenal.

Product Description
Learning to teach reading is an important and timely topic in the reading-focused reform environment of education at the start of the millennium. Teacher education in general and reading teacher education, specifically, are under attack. Teacher educators are accused of not preparing teachers who are capable of teaching reading to all children. To address these challenges and to set in motion future reform, renowned literacy scholars have come together to present Learning to Teach Reading: Setting the Research Agenda.

In this volume, editor Cathy M. Roller has compiled chapters based on presentations at the International Reading Association's Reading Research 2000 Conference. Notable scholars address issues ranging from the status of the knowledge base to social reconstruction and teacher education, from beginning teachers' instructional practices to practicing teachers' reactions to teaching standards. In the book's concluding chapter, Roller establishes an agenda for future research and development at all teaching levels.

Roller states that she is "convinced that improving America's schools, and particularly the reading instruction in those schools, requires an ambitious research agenda for teacher education." The themes of such a research agenda are woven throughout this volume, which reading researchers and teacher educators will find invaluable. This important collection will not only propel new research on teacher preparation for reading instruction, but it also will help you to find a proactive voice in advancing standards and practices of excellence in literacy education. ... Product Description
Ever wondered how to help your learners take an active role in becoming strategic thinkers and readers? Want to develop meaningful lessons to aid students in their comprehension of text? Weaving Through Words: Using the Arts to Teach Reading Comprehension Strategies shows how to accomplish both these goals.

Authors Roberta D. Mantione, a literacy specialist, and Sabine Smead, a classroom teacher, wanted to help their students become competent readers. Knowing that strategic thinking and strong comprehension occurs when students are offered multiple ways of responding to text, the authors developed an arts-integrated curriculum that would help them teach reading comprehension strategies. This book is an in-depth look at the effects of using multiple art forms as a methodology for teaching comprehension to elementary students.

Each chapter not only presents and defines the specific comprehension strategies—developing sensory images, building and activating schema, questioning, determining importance, inferring, and synthesis—but also provides information to help you re-create the lessons in your classroom. Interspersed throughout this book are student samples that offer insight into the depth of the lessons and of students’ learning. Appendixes offer an arts matrix to help you implement lessons; directions for art projects and drama techniques, blackline masters, and suggested resources.

Weaving Through Words is a valuable resource for any elementary teacher who wants to provide students with a variety of ways to express their thinking and improve their reading comprehension. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for arts infusion and benefits
I bought this book on a lark after typing in "arts integration" here at Amazon (I'm a music teacher who now presents workshops on the subject).I was absolutely delighted with this purpose-driven book of arts-infused reading comprehension strategies, a big issue with most school districts.

My desire is to make my colleagues feel a little less burdened by the constant demand for better scores, higher numbers, etc., and to get back to the joy of learning, which the arts certainly promote.

The book includes actual examples of students' work in the book and the book is clearly divided into sections such as inference, synthesis and activating schema (scaffolding?).

Mantione & Smead, like most arts integration authors, lean toward primary and grade school models, but it's still a great start.Maybe I'll be the one to write a book on inner-city teens, who sorely need the arts as avenue for improved learning, expression, life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Essentials
This was a companion book to our reading textbook in RED3012.I learned much more from Regie Routman than I did from our textbook, which generalized concepts.Reading Essentials gives exact advice on how to implement a reading program in a classroom, and the advice I will actually use!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are teaching reading you must have this book!
I have read many authors dedicated to improving classroom reading instruction, but this one may be the most amazing of all. I had completely changed my third grade classroom reading instruction to a reading workshop fouded on the principles of student choice and ongoing assessment. Regie Routman provides not only validation for my methods and classroom management, but more information and research to support my assertions. If you question any part of your reading program, this is the book to read. It is clear, concise, and written in a conversational style that leaves the reader fully satisfied.

How to Teach Non-Fiction Writing provides a practical, accessible teaching sequence to help teachers of junior classes to teach about the organization and language features of the six non-fiction text types (recount, report, instruction, explanation, persuasion and discussion) and to link non-fiction writing to pupils' work across the curriculum, so they can use content learned in other subject areas as the basis for writing in a particular text type. It will help teachers develop pupils' ability to organize their non-fiction writing appropriately, in terms of text-type, layout and paragraphing and focus on significant language features of the text-types. The teaching sequence is also designed to develop pupils' appreciation of the underlying structures of non-fiction texts, thus linking the acquisition of literacy skills to "thinking skills" in general. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A rare insight and valuable method: highly recomended.
In the early 19th centuary Joseph Lancaster used peer tutoring to provide affordble humane schooling. That method fell into disrepute due to the wrote nature of learning observed.

Without reference to the past, the authors developed a peer tutoring method from the "writers workshop" system. Their focus being to improve the quality of critical reasoning and creative writing in modern first world elementary/primary school classes.

Their method has fundamental similarities to both the Lancastrian system, and to the use of senior students as tutors in the Oxbridge system at university level. They report plausible results showing substantial improvements in learning by ordinary ten year olds in Hawaii.

The outcome would suggest that pre-teen children are capable of much greater responsibility and intellectual activity than is commonly supposed. It would appear that, with appropriate use of social "scaffolding", mutual peer tutoring can produce results otherwise attainable only by unaffordably low pupil:teacher ratios. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A diamond in the rough!
It took a lot of effort on my part, as the teacher, to understand the concept, BUT it was well worth the effort. This is not a quick-fix, easy-to-do worksheet approach so if a teacher is looking for something quick and easy, he/she will need to look elsewhere. Instead, this is a resource that can be used throughout the year to teach specific techniques in writing by reading good literature, breaking it down into lessons on writing strong leads, using your senses, creating characters, and more. I found this resource extremely valuable and helpful in training children to write both fiction and nonfiction. I recommend it to classroom teachers as well as homeschoolers who are willing to take the time necessary to teach children to write interesting and effective compositions. ... Read more
