Product Description

Research shows that reading aloud each day is the "single most important activity" that parents can do with their preschoolers and early elementary children. How does a person sort through the countless stacks of mediocre books lining the shelves of libraries and bookstores to uncover the best literature to share with their little ones? And once they hold the quality book in their hand, then what? How can they take full advantage of the read-aloud experience to foster key preliteracy skills?

The ABCs of Literacy: Preparing Our Children for Lifelong Learning answers all these questions and many more. Cynthia Dollins provides parents with in-depth information regarding research on the value of reading aloud, how to select great literature, and how to use this literature as a springboard to build phonemic awareness, phonics skills, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. Parents who are looking to give every possible advantage to their children are shown how to give them a true head start in reading that translates to a head start in school and in life.

The ABCs of Literacy balances theory and practice to help parents engage their young children in literacy development. In includes summaries of 300 or more titles of age-appropriate quality literature for children, providing clear and specific criteria to help parents independently select the best books to read to their children. Also included are engaging ways to utilize art, cooking, writing, and drama to extend the read-aloud experience in order to foster their children's greater understanding of what they read.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every single page of The ABCs of Literacy.I especially loved the quotes and poetry from various stories that the author included throughout her book, such as "Cat Kisses" (so sweet). The ABCs of Literacy is not only user friendly, it is the best comprehensive guide to literacy I've ever read. I feel it is a "must read" for those going into elementary teaching. As a parent and an educator I found this book to be a valuable resource. Dr. Dollins has given parents and guardians a much needed tool. Her personal stories added a warm delightful touch for all and was fun for me to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Grandmother's Recommendation
The ABC's of Literacy is an excellent guide for grandmothers (like me) and for parents who want to help their young children learn to read.Cynthia Dollins uses a wonderful conversational tone that immediately invites you to read on.She recounts many firsthand literacy experiences with her own children and those of her friends.

The author tells all the reasons why it is so important to read aloud each and why adults should read all different types of books to childr3en.I had always focused on stories, but Cynthia Dollins explains why notification, poetry, and other types of books are essential to getting our children ready for school. She also includes lists of books for each genre which have been very helpful to me.There are tables throughout the book to make it easy to see exactly what fun activities you can do with many great books.

I am so glad I found The ABC's of Literacy. It has helped me improve what I read to my grandchildren and how I read it to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and informative book!
As an educator, I have always known the benefit to children of the read-aloud experience as a foundation and framework that helps develop strong readers. In The ABCs of Literacy, Cynthia Dollins has done an exceptional job answering the questions of how and why we read to our children. With her experience as both a professional educator and as a mother, the author has truly captured the essence of the power of learning to read.

Cynthia Dollins' style of writing invites readers to continue their search for information as she seamlessly weaves in her own experiences with research-based information. After reading the book, readers will understand not only the basics of literacy development and the importance of encouraging independent reading, but also how to develop comprehension and select quality literature.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone whose life is touched by children and who seeks to promote solid reading skills for a lifetime of learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Series
We purchased this series to help my oldest learn to read. His Kindergarten teacher had told us he would never learn to read. The books are simply written and maintain the same plot line through all the books. The main character is always "Little (letter of the book." Each character has a box and decides to fill it with items that start with that letter. My oldest (now 8) reads on the 6th grade level with full comprehension. These books have done wonders in our house. I'm sorry to find that this series is now so hard to come by. I will definately hold on to these for my other children and then for their children. ... Product Description

Not long ago, literacy simply meant knowing how to read and write. Today, the study of literacy is a complex field encompassing many different areas, from computer literacy to geographic literacy, and including several degrees of competence such as functional, pragmatic, and cultured. In addition there are six kinds of readers: the submissive, the active, the semiotic, the subjective, the psychoanalytic, and the interpretive community reader, and at least two distinct ways of reading: aesthetic reading and rational reading.

In this comprehensive, accessible volume, two literacy experts not only help readers understand the latest theories and the heated controversies in this exciting field, they also show readers how this vast new knowledge is being applied in successful literacy programs.
