Product Description

An active and innovative approach to making words that teachers and their students have grown to love is finally here!

Based on its highly successful parent text, Phonics They Use, this new grade-level series Making Words offers teachers a fresh multi-level activity and lesson series written for the kindergarten through fifth grade classroom. Pat Cunningham and Dottie Hall present classroom teachers with effective tools for strengthening phonics and spelling skills that encourage students to move beyond learning and into a world of word discovery. Each research-based volume includes a wealth of friendly, hands-on, manipulative activities that guide teachers in teaching the development of words--from phonemic awareness to spelling.

In Making Words Second Grade, Pat and Dottie introduce second grade teachers to 100 lessons that teach all the phonics, spelling, and phonemic awareness skills included in most second grade curricula. Each Making Words activity leads children through a systematic and sequential phonics curriculum. All lessons include practice with the phonemic awareness skills of segmenting and blending as children stretch out words they are making and blend the letters to make new words. Because teaching children letter-sound relationships is easier than teaching children to actually use these letter-sound relationships, all lessons include a transfer step in which children apply the sounds they are learning to spelling new words.

Making Words Second Grade is the best resource you can have on hand for motivating your students to learn words!

  • Features 100 fun and interactive lessons for building phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling skills.
  • Presents a concise method for involving students in the process of identifying phonological units and patterns within words.
  • Promotes student awareness of similarities in words that helps develop writing skills.
  • Includes reproducible letter tiles, record sheets for each lesson, and take-home sheets to copy, cut, and/or laminate.
  • Highlights a list of useful children's books to extend the Making Words lesson.

Product Description
This Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Interactive CD contains fun and engaging hands-on activities for use with interactive whiteboards or a computer. Designed to help students recognize the sounds that form familiar words, each activity concentrates on phonemes, the building blocks of language, and lets students practice matching those phonemes to illustrations of recognizable words. Students can manipulate objects as they experiment and simultaneously hear the sounds for those objects. As students see the relationships between the sounds that make up words, they form a better understanding of the spoken language, which leads to better reading comprehension. Activities focus on beginning sounds, rhyming, blending, and letter recognition. This CD pack includes a Resource CD with activities and a 16-page Teacher's Guide. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth it
I just bought this book and don't recommend it, it has very simple activities with very little explanation about them, this kind of activities you can easily think of them even my grandma has better ideas that the ones that come on this book I feeldisappointed about this book I had to give a star to this book even it does not deserve it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
I purchased this book on the recommendation of an Orton-Gillingham class I took.It has been a great resource for the beginning readers I tutor. The activities are fun and take very little prep for the teacher.I recommend this book for anyone looking to boost phonemic awareness, a critical skill for reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
As a parent I needed something to assist my child and found this book to be great.

It is setup for class room setting but with a little improvision here and there works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready to use lessons
The lesson plans are all right there to get started teaching phonemic awareness in a classroom or small group. Sections are divided up intospecific skills. The research included in the book makes it easy to explain to parents why these are improtant skills to teach.Includes a material list and assessments as well.A "must have" for pre-kindergarten through first grade teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Picture Sorting for Phonemic Awareness
This is a great companion to other curriculum. The pictures are simple and easy for children to identify. The students enjoyed finding words that "went together" it was a great way to introduce and reinforce word family knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
This is a great book for teaching children beginning sounds and as they move on into phoneme segmenting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Effective and Fun Workbook for Developing Phonemic Awareness
As a special education classroom teacher and tutor specializing in reading, I am extremely impressed with the effectiveness of "Picture Sorting for Phonemic Awareness". Being able to recognize and make rhymes is key to developing phonemic awareness, the foundation for reading words, and "Picture Sorting for Phonemic Awareness" provides children with visually enticing and engaging rhyming activities.
The book is well organized and accessible to parents as well as to teachers and tutors. It provides a clear explanation on how to assess a child's proficiency at rhyming and how to do the activities. Also impressive are the suggestions on how to alter and expand the activities to make them more challenging as children make gains.
While there are many rhyming workbooks on the market, I have found "Picture Sorting for Phonemic Awareness" to be one of the most effective I have used in my 15 years of working with new and struggling readers. The children enjoy the activities and the improvements they make are impressive. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars So helpful
I think this is so helpful for kids about to learnto read. Extremelyuser-friendly. Provides kids with hands-on practice in recognizing and comparing sounds to get them ready to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leber--Picture sorting for Phonemic Awareness
I think this is a wonderful book for parents and early childhood teachers looking for a fun way to help pre-readers learn how to read. The book is easy-to-use.The Table of Contents is very clear. Each skill section follows the same format--Recognizing, Assessment, Reproducible Picture Cards. Parents are shown how to assess their child's ability to recognize rhymes and initial and ending sounds and count syllables and phonemes. The black-and-white reproducible drawings are of easily recognizable pictures. As the children color the pictures, parents can encourage their children to say aloud the names of the pictures and listen to the sounds. Parents are given instructions on how to teach their children the relationship between sounds and letters, the crucial first step towards learning how to read. The book also includes picture-sorting games and activities, and a word list. I highly recommend this book.
