5-0 out of 5 stars Great for basics and beyond
This straight-forward book is easy to read and apply in the classroom. It has an excellent review of phonics for instructors or parents who need to brush up.I particularly enjoyed the many suggested games for phonemic awareness and developing alphabet recognition. This little gem would be a great addition for resource libraries big and small.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Resource
This book is an essential resource for the elementary school teacher and parent whose children are struggling to learn to read. The teacher who has never been taught the underpinnings of "decoding" our language will have a comprehensive overview here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I was looking for something to boost my purchase up to $25 so that I could get free shipping. I got this book, thinking that it was a book to read with my kids. However, the book is an educational book that a teacher would use. Good book, but not what I was expecting.

1-0 out of 5 stars not much use for homeschool teachers, IMO
This book is very much geared toward teachers teaching in schools, lots of info on phonics theory and assessment, very little on implementation and methodology. This is most definitely not a how-to book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!
I first got this from my library, and am ordering a copy to keep. I have been searching for a resource to help my boys, who both have language delays. My older boy has had huge struggles with reading, and I hope to make it easier for my younger son.

As a homeschooler, I have access to a wealth of phonics resources. Most are geared toward "average" kids, and move way too fast for my boys. Many are workbook-based, which is a poor fit for kids who hate to pick up a pencil, and for moms who would rather make learning more fun. Curricula designed for struggling readers are full of manipulatives I already own or can easily make, and cost hundreds of dollars.

The information in this book will allow me to tailor a course of study to my son's weaknesses and strengths, and ensure that I do not leave out critical steps. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful ideas
This book is chock-full of ideas for making words with your students and having fun at the same time!

1-0 out of 5 stars If they aren't WRITING they aren't remembering...
These are lovely activities...BUT they are NOT multisensory. As a 10 year reading specialist I know students have to WRITE to remember.None of these activities ever have a child writing.WRITING is where the spelling memory is.Spelling/phonics memory has little to do with the visual and more to do with the physical act.

Please pass this by and get something where students can experience writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great intervention tool
As a first grade teacher I used this book as an intervention tool with my ELL students last year.It helped with voacbulary as well as phonics. The activities are hands on and we were able to create several games using the lessons as well.I recommend this book to anyone in the primary grades. It is great as an intervention tool, large group activity or as a center.

4-0 out of 5 stars Creative
This concept keeps kids interested. They want to figure out the little words and the big words created by the letters, so it's an excellent one for phonics. If you already use Open Court, it would be a good supplement. There is some prep time involved in writing and cutting the letters, unless you're smarter than me and use die-cut letters from a bulletin board!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Words
This book is great! There are many word activities to choose from, which I find very helpful and a time saver! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool for Building Phonemic Awareness!
This flipbook is an easy, useful tool for daily practice or remedial work in phonemic awareness. It includes long word lists for all the letters, plus lists of rhymes for vowels. The lists have many single syllable words that younger children would know; however, I especially appreciate the inclusion of words for older students.Word lists for a single phoneme may include proper and common nouns, compound words, contractions, multisyllabic words, and variant spelling patterns. Many words have prefixes or suffixes. The companion book, A Letteration: FInal and Middle Sounds, may be even more helpful, as middle sounds are harder to generate. These books are helpful additions to any elementary teacher's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Parents and Teachers!
A LETTERation Beginning Sounds and Rhymes is a wonderful resource for teachers and parents. It is a valuable tool for teaching and reinforcing phonemic awareness. This book is very beneficial to me as a reading specialist because it can be used with a variety of grade and phonemic awareness levels. The activities are appropriate to use with an individual child, small group, or whole class. My students love to "compete" with each other to see how many words they can generate for the target sound. It is also fun for them to see how many words they thought of compared to the number in the book. The word lists of beginning sounds and rhyming words is endless! The directions are very clear and easy to follow. The prompt card in the back of the book is helpful when students can no longer think of words that begin with the target sound. The author did a fabulous job in making this resource easy to use and beneficial for students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ESL Teacher
I use this book regulary with my second languge students. They enjoy moving around the letters to make words and their spelling has gotten much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect medicine for struggling decoders
Even in the third grade, students find difficulties decoding multisyllabic words. Not only does this book make it easier for them, but it exposes them to spelling patterns and sounds that help reading fun.I live by it, and have held workshops for fellow colleagues. They have found it to be beneficial, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Older struggling readers
I teach Title 1 disadvantaged reading students, most are learning English as a second language.I did a word a day with my 6th, 7th , and 8th graders. The making words lessons allowed me to introduce vocabulary, point out spelling patterns, talk about vowel variances, and talk about how our words are made up.I asked them to write the words as well as manipulate the letters.Sometimes, I asked them to group the words if there were several words with the same spelling pattern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Phonics & Spelling Gr.3-5
This is a great how-to book for one specific phonics & spelling teaching strategy. It has made a big difference in my third graders ability to sound out unknown words and incorporate their knowledge ofspelling patterns.Making Words is geared for K-3rd.Making Big Words isfor 3rd thru 5th graders. It's a hands-on approach and it is veryadaptable. You can do it just as suggested or adjust it to your students'particular need.It includes hundreds of lessons. It can also be used incoordination with thematic units that you may be using in your room.Agreat resource.Worth every penny.I just love Patricia Cunningham! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another One?
Yes! Another one!I have taught first, second, and now next year third grade and every time I change grades I make sure I have a Making Words for that level. My kids love to do these activites.I give them a 2 inch wide strip of paper and they fold it into 8 squares. They write one letter from the activity in each square, tear them apart, and we are ready to go.The activites are easy, fun, and an excellent way to help those kids that need to touch and manipulate letters to make words...hence the title!!These books are a valuable aid to my curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Planning To Learn
The authors have taken the work out of lesson plans for vocabulary building and spelling. Home schoolers especially should find the book a real time-saver in preparation with lots of drills for one-on-one sessions with your young pupil. ... Read more
