1-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of filler, irrelevant information, and shameless self-promotion
Upon opening the book you will find a short list of accomplishments by the author that include having a black belt in martial arts, awards for poetry composition, and experience "consulting and advising" the governments of England, Singapore, Mexico, etc. He is also a global personality and has been seen and heard by over 3 billion people (do you, like me, belong to the other half of the planet?), and apparently too, an Olympic coach.

The book then leads through several chapters of somewhat interesting, easy-to-swallow "facts" and stories about speed reading and the promises it holds, such as being able to read texts at 1000 wpm, about 17 words a second, without much sacrificing comprehension. Oh it is certainly possible, but not everyone read to forget. There was too, a diagnostic test along with several passages and a mix of short random pieces of info, from which you learn neat tidbits about the author's other revolutionary ideas and Trademarks, such as Mind Mapping, and Mastering Memory.

If you continue reading beyond the initial chapters, you will eventually find some useful information, tips, methods on speed reading. These can best be summarized by the titles they carry: "Your Amazing Eyes", "Super Concentration and Comprehension", "Advanced Use of Your Eye/Brain Systems" - impressive stuff. Such useful information are sprinkled like raisins in a box of raisin bran - tasty, but not enough to make you eat it with all the unpalatable bran. Compared to all the other speed reading books, the ones that let you use your own material, that make use of drills and gives you tips in a straightforward and unembellished way, this is a poor investment of your money and time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get an audio program in addition to this book
This book consists of history and the new developments of speed reading, self tests and exercises, mixed with short essays on physiologic aspects of reading, like left and right cortical research, the number of brain cells and their interconnections, the anatomy of eyes (including the cross-section), control of eye movements t to increase the speed and comprehension of reading (with diagrams of eyes' progression while reading).

The author addressed the common reading problems: subvocalization, finger-pointing, regression and back-skipping, and presents the new approaches to overcoming them. He gives practical advises on improving your concentration and increasing your comprehension. Much attention is given to developing advanced skimming and scanning techniques, range reading skills, metronome training.

The book finishes with tips on getting control of different kinds of text: the newspapers, literature and poetry.

In addition to this book, I can recommend exercising with a speed reading audio program, that should be listened while reading. I can suggest "The Speed Reading 16-Minute Audio Program" which I have personally used. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Faster reading leads to revolution ... or at least makes you a better conversationalist and earns you more money
10 Days to Faster Reading

It only takes an army of one, with the right power, to start a revolution.

You already know that knowledge is power; but the power YOU need to fuel your private revolution and rule your world and theirs must be earned, not received.

That means you'll have to work for it and not rely on anyone else. And, because chances are you haven't had any reading lessons since you were in 3rd grade, this is the book to help you double or triple your ability to read and retain your newly earned power.

Don't buy the whole revolution thing? Try this: faster reading will at least make you a better conversationalist and earn you more money.
The book has three advantages: one, it's short enough that you'll actually read the whole thing; two, you will improve your reading speed if you apply it; and three, it has many different examples for you to pick and choose from.

What THIS book does very well is give you the tools to find out what type of reader YOU are. Then it gives several methods to practice that fit YOUR individual issues with reading pace and comprehension.

There's no substitute for actually reading everything, but there are ways to do it faster and more efficiently. So what are you waiting for? Buy it now and start to rule YOUR world and THEIRS.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
This is a good book which provides good tips and attaches names to common reading techniques which people pick up from experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Already showing improvement and only half done!
I found the material relevant and helpful.I've read several books on this subject through the years, and most give general ideas and tips to speed reading that are just not realistic. Great advise, how do I do that? I happen to be a good guitar player, and I can tell you how to easily play Van Halen, but can you just pick up a guitar and play? Not likely.

What THIS book does very well is give you the tools to find out what type of reader YOU are. Then it gives several methods to try and practice that fits YOUR individual issues with reading pace and comprehension.

There are also exercises to help train your eyes in the muscle memory needed to effectively speed up your reading.

I'm not a speed reading prodigy, but I have personally found with what I've read so far, that I'm blasting through technical magazines at record pace, and comprehending the material. My pile of things "TO READ" is almost gone.I can't wait to finish my daily lessons and move on the the next level!Good Work.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful advice to speed things up
As long as you're not expecting to read books as fast as you can turn pages, you'll get something from this one. Some good techniques that you'll master through drills and later via your own reading.Honestly, I'm not sure if it's reading with this kind of awareness which actually helps to pick up the speed or the techniques themselves.Either way though, this was the book which got me to put everything into motion so I've got to give it credit for at least getting me started on this path of faster reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only for poor readers
I have only read methods and tips I have already been doing for myself. This book is only for people having real reading skill problems... ... Read more

About this Speed Reading Book:

“How to Effectively Double Your Reading Speed and Accelerate Your Learning Abilities to the Extreme!”

Trivia: Did you know that some people can read more than a thousand words per minute as compared to an average college student who can only read between 250 and 350 wpm?

That’s true!

Anyone can double their speed in reading without the fear of not being able to understand the materials being read.

Most people find reading rapidly difficult and risky. They are afraid that as they increase the speed of reading, they might not be able to grasp the idea of what they are reading.

That’s why they have to settle with slow reading speed that makes them finish a novel over a month, or worse, not being able to find what they are looking for in an academic textbook for an assignment in school before the due date.

What they do not know is that, according to studies, the relationship between reading speed and comprehension is directly proportional to each other. That is, an increase in rate entails an increase in comprehension.

Want to double your reading speed and increase your understanding of the materials being read? Then take a look at this speed reading book titled:

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to speed read
I have always been a speed reader, finishing 700 page books in one day, but I know that not everyone can do this and sometimes it can be difficult getting through lengthy books for school in the short amount of time professors give you. To help my brother with that, I let him read this book and he has already seen results. He is able to get through books at a much quicker pace and finish him assignments in time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
I wish I would have had this book when I was in college.I don't have time to follow audio courses that are available, so this book fit the bill. While I have not compared this speed reading book to any others, I found that it presented the information in a concise, organized way.The tips on tackling different types of reading are dead on.I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't knock it until you try it.
After reading the previous review I felt compelled to offer my view.
This book uses some of the same principles as the "Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics" (tm) program.
If you want to increase your reading speed, this is an economical alternative to taking the course.
I have purchased and read this book and the principles taught are sound (i.e. they work if given a chance). If you would like to read 1,500 words per minute or more then get this book or one like it and practice, practice, practice.
I hope this helps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hillarious!

Product Description
Spd Rdng – a collection of techniques we know will both speed up your reading and allow you to process material 10 times faster, or even more.

If you read the book in order, you will effectively be following our two-day workshop, but many of the techniques, insights and suggestions are self-standing and can improve your reading, so feel free to read them in the order which makes most sense to you (there’s a lot of cross-referencing in case you need to check out something which has been presented earlier). But however you approach the book, we strongly suggest that you actually try things out as you go. As we say in the book, reading is just the first step; it’s only useful if you put the information into practice.

If you haven’t got time to read the whole book at the moment, then the techniques which will make the biggest immediate difference to your reading are:
1) Apply skills you already have
2) Preview
3) Don’t think reading, think finding information
4) Have a clear purpose for reading
5) Apply the 80/20 rule to your reading
6) Read the message not the words
14) Get into a good state for reading
17) Take notes with mindmaps and rhizomaps
18) Have 20-minute work sessions
Plus the Underlining technique

We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for you to pick up and review the ideas:
1) the titles of the techniques are self-explanatory
2) each of the techniques is summarised in bold at the beginning of its section
3) there is an extensive and helpful glossary
4) we give examples of people’s actual experience – including our own
5) there are ‘expert tips’ throughout which will also help you

EXPERT TIP number one: While you’re learning, use well-written books you can understand easily – it will give you confidence in your new approach to reading. Once you’ve mastered all the techniques, you will be able to apply them to any written material – including books, journals, reports and articles, both on- and off-line.

2-0 out of 5 stars Meh, think about it..
The time one spends listening and working on all the cassettes is probably never gained back by how fast one might be able to read after going through this program.

Howard Stephen Berg is a part savant; at least that's what it seems like to me.Unless you are very, very gifted like Berg, this program will likely sit on your shelf for many years until cassettes become extinct (aren't they already??).

Just my two cents. For me, this was a gimmicky, foolish purchase on my part.I never became a speed reader, unfortunately.

2-0 out of 5 stars Parts were useful, other parts were flat out wrong!
Let me start off with *some* of what is wrong with this product. Then I'll get to what is actually useful so that you don't have to pay for it (please don't buy it!).

About 90% of this product is a total gimmick. For example, the last half of the course consists of "memory tips" from Kevin Trudeau, "expert" in the field of memory training. This guy is a total con artist with a criminal record. The last 4 or 5 cassettes are literally him trying to sell you "memory supplements", which do nothing but pad his wallet.A good rule of thumb is to always ignore Kevin Trudeau, even though I must admit his performances are quite comedic.

Granted, I didn't expect a cassette to deliver cinematic sound quality. However, the quality is beyond poor. You can literally hear people talking in the background! At one point, a dog is barking! It seems like they recorded this in their garage. They could have at least went someplace a little more quiet!

The advertising claims are extremely deceptive. They suggest that it is totally natural and possible to "take in a page at a glance with full comprehension".This is simply not true. Our visual systems have clear limits on what we can see on the printed page.Furthermore, reading research has shown that we cannot gain much information outside of our para-foveal view.Quite simply, we see about 15 characters to the right of our current fixation (and about 5 characters to the left).Outside of this, we cannot process information! What does this mean? You have to push your eyeballs really fast over the page (aka 'skimming').That is essentially what this course amounts to.It is an advanced skimming course.

Howard Berg, the author of this course, is actually an intelligent guy who seems relatively sincere. He has recently started sharing some tips on Youtube, which is very generous of him (*slight sarcasm*).I do believe he is a very fast reader.I do wish there would be some way to scientifically verify that, but unfortunately no formal studies have been conducted (to my knowledge). So we kind of have to take his word on it.No problem, but apparently now he is producing all sorts of "advanced learning programs".With zero qualifications and only his "word", I'd steer clear of such courses.

Generally, self-help courses promise you the moon and deliver next to nothing. This course, as I mentioned earlier, does have some things which I do think are beneficial.

1)You should spend the majority of time learning the information instead of reading it.Lots of a book is filled with stuff that simply does not matter or is irrelevant to what you need.Reading should consist of skimming, speed reading (slower skimming), and then reviewing. This is actually a good formula to follow!

Basically, comb through a book at the very beginning to get the gist of how its organized.Next, start "speed reading" it (slower form of skimming). You should be mainly focusing on nouns and verbs. You can skip right over function words (conjunctions and high-frequency words).Focus on the meat. When you come upon something relevant that you need/want to learn later, put a mark next to it!!Upon review, you can actually focus on learning and memorizing what is important that you marked down. The goal is to find what you need, mark it down, come back and learn it later. The majority of the time should be on learning rather than repeatedly reading.Test yourself over the important stuff and throw away the rest of the book that is irrelevant.

2)He mentions an exercise you can perform to "train yourself to read at higher speeds".This is where it gets interesting. Is it possible to read faster and faster with practice?Possibly. The exercise is interesting:

1st minute -- Fastest reading speed with full comprehension
2nd minute -- Double your reading speed (comprehension fades)
3rd minute -- Triple your reading speed (comprehension very poor)
4th minute -- Fastest reading speed with full comprehension

The idea is that your brain works faster and faster to process text during the 2nd and 3rd minute, so that when you finally slow down you can read much faster than before.Repeated over many weeks and months, the "theory" is that you can train your brain to process text at very high speeds.

So is this possible?Maybe.I think it would take significant practice and the gain would not be as outrageous as most people claim.I think there will almost always be a speed / comprehension trade-off.It's worth trying this little exercise a little bit each day to see what happens, but give it many weeks and don't expect miracles.

3)Read topic sentences, chapter titles, and summaries to enhance comprehension.

Practical tip, but important if you have to read something quickly.Read the first and last sentence carefully within each paragraph.Sometimes, it's better to read the summaries at the end of a chapter before you read the rest of the article to help with your comprehension.

That is essentially the entire course. It is advanced skimming with numerous examples and a few exercises.Definitely not worth the money overall, but not totally useless either.Kevin Trudeau is a crook - avoid his products and advice. He flat-out lies and tries to manipulate people.Howard Berg seems more genuine, but at the end of the day it is all about the money. The useful stuff is in this review - don't order this product.

One final note -- always take self-help products with a grain of salt.More often than not, they are making extravagant promises they cannot keep.It is a cut-throat world where they just want your money!

Hope this review helped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to speed reading...
I got this course when I was around 15 or 16, and it was very much hyped on late night infomercials back then. For accelerated learning junkies like myself, it was a great looking buy. It is an excellent course on learning eye movement when taking in massive loads of reading information, but I question the course comprehensive instruction. Having the ability to "recall" alot of the information from speed reading seems to be a tad bit difficult, no matter what course you learn. A good mnemonics course can help you "mind map" the information as you read it and use it for recall later. The skimming techniques take some time to get used to, but they prove useful later on. I dont honestly use a lot of the techniques from this course anymore, just because I've studied numerous speed reading techniques and have adapted what is comfortable for me. I think everyone should do the same.

The only reason I dont give it 5 stars is because the audio tapes do have a lot of unnecessary filler. I truthfully dont care about "what" I could do when learning the techniques but rather "how" I could apply them. The first couple of tapes seem to go on and on about what you can do with speed reading. Some customers may be interested though, so it's more of a personal preference on my part.

So in short, this is a great begginners speed reading course, but I would highly recommend it with a good memory course as well. I'd recommend some of Tony Buzan's books, or Dominic O'Brien's as well. Probably not Keven Trudeau's though because alot of his are just "associative" memory techniques and not techniqes for remembering massive amounts of data.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sincere project at increasing speed and comprehension...
until I was ambushed by a perfunctory nutrition lecture by Kevin Fraudeau towards the end of the course. I found it very, very odd and i speculate that it was an ultimatum that Fraudeau made so Berg can get his course to the public... though I could be wrong.

As for the course: This thing was collecting dust for 10 years before I recently used it. I calculated my speed at 600 wpm, but my main motive was to read for increased comprehension; both increased noticeably during the early part of the course and I was wholly impressed. The comprehension tricks do not appear hyperbole and I anticipate impressive results with practice.
Berg's jokes when coupled with his heavy Brooklyn accent were also enjoyable.

**I read that Howard Berg was indicted in '98 for stating that a girl with brain damage successfully used Mega Reading... guessed Kevin rubbed off on him?

Frankly, I have no idea of the validity of the "stated facts" of Kevin Trudeau having been imprisoned, etc. What I do know is that the program is excellent!I thoroughly benefited from the information & would recommend anyone who is interested in reading at a decent speed - those going to college, etc.Truthfully, if you were to really do your research you will find out that the FDA HAS IN FACT HIDDEN many things from America as a nation - Take for example, how many of you have mercury fillings in your mouth? And WHY does the FDA tell the DENTISTS to put a MASK on their FACE & CAREFULLY HANDLE & NOT touch with their bare hands any MERCURY?AND FURTHER, WHY did the FDA start to encourage Hospitals, etc. to DISPOSE of MERCURY thermometers? If you are supposed to exercise such IMMENSE care if the thermometer were to "BREAK open" then WHY ON EARTH would we be PERMANENTLY putting MERCURY in our own mouths?!?!YOU usually SWALLOW food you put into your mouth - who says you aren't swallowing that MERCURY right along with it?!MERCURY was cheap at the time they started doing fillings - now it's a HUGE "HUSH, HUSH" debate with the FDA - can you IMAGINE how MANY people could SUE the FDA if the FDA were to ADMIT that they shouldn't have "OKAY-DOKEYED" Mercury Fillings?! - I know of a dentist who lost eye-sight due to a mercury "accident" which accumulated in the office carpet.WAKE UP PEOPLE, just b/c the FDA says it's "SAFE" doesn't mean it necessarily is!The problem we all have now a days is that people don't THINK for THEMSELVES - we instead allow the FDA and anyone else we are TOLD is CREDIBLE to TELL US What is SAFE & What is NOT - we just believe what we hear - instead of doing research & finding it out for ourselves - So frankly, to conclude, I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin is right or not about some of the things he mentions with the drug companies - WHY DO PRESCRIPTIONS have some of the VERY SAME SIDE EFFECTS as the CONDITIONS which they are supposed to TREAT?Did that THOUGHT ever cross YOUR MIND?Also, if Kevin really did do all of those terrible things & had to pay those fines, etc., then yes he deserved that - EVERYONE should have to "RIGHT" their "WRONGS".Truthfully, I have yet to see EVERY "wrong" made "right" - there are quite a few that have been left "unsettled" - Oh, and by the way, don't some of our Hard-earned tax dollars go to PAY for People in PRISON for their wrongs?!Why should we have to pay for that?Truthfully, if you were to evaluate every company & every single owner, subsidary, etc. I think you would find a lot of surprising evidence which you may not like or approve of.THINK - don't let someone else make up your mind for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good resource
Maximum Speed Reading gave me the tools I needed to learn to read faster and with more comprehension. It takes a lot of mental effort to do the activities, but the effort pays off with higher reading speeds.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Price
I bought this item for my two teen-aged children to help increase their reading speed and comprehension skills for college study. The whole system is confusing and didn't increase their reading speed or comprehension very much. They were extremely bored with the whole thing. I am sorry to have wasted my money on this program. I already had the Alphanetics program I bought many years ago when I worked as a counselor in a private college. I should have stuck with it, but this came highly recommended from an organization that my son was enrolled in to help him earn college credit by examination. I had high hopes, but it turned out to be a dud. I would not recomnmend this program. It appears that the author is extremely gifted with the ability to read with superhuman speed, but he lacks the ability to translate what he knows into a format that others can learn and utilize. Sometimes it seemed that something was left out of the sessions and I was left with the feeling that there has to be more to it than what was presented. In other words, I don't think he's that great of a teacher. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars INCOMPLETE!!!

The audio portion(4 CDs) of the program was good with many heplful suggestions. However, the program was to have included a workbook and it did not. This, of course, lessened its value and effectiveness. Two of your customer service reps tried very hard to help me find out who or where to call to obtain a workbook but were unable to do so. I'm greatful for their efforts. I think it would be VERY helpful if you were to let customers know that a workbook is needed to get the most out of the program and that it's NOT included.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to present my review. I hope it helps.

Sincerely,

Dan Diesti

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissatified
I am dissatified with the product because I was not given the entire product. While listening to the first CD, I was told to go to my workbook which I never received. I would like it. The set was also missing the computer CD. I would like that also. If you send me the missing parts, I may then be able to make a more accurate assessment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
Help me out. If anyone has figured out how to access the all-important pdf files supposedly on the 4th CD ~ let me in on the secret. I've tried every way I can think of to find something besides audio files on these discs but cannot. It is useless to me if I can't do the reading exercises to follow along.

Apart from that, as with many self help programs, they spend way too much time selling me on a program I already bought and take their time getting around to making a point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone that is struggling with reading, thinking, and comprehension should give this a try.
I started college at 30 years old.I am in my second semester and I am finding out that if your reading, thinking, comprehension, and listening skills are not good you are going to suffer in your reading assignments. In my catalog for the spring, there are reading courses on different things.I thought about it and decided that sitting three hours in a class lecture is too much for me when I already have other lectures and reading assignments.I can honestly tell you, for me personally, this is one of thebest courses I have ever taken. In just one night, I am already seeing some slight improvement. But you must have patience, you must be honest with yourself, and you must be willing to put in a little time if you try this.I can already feel my reading and thinking skills getting better. And the listening is getting better too. It may not work for everyone, but it is definitely working for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars I CAN ALREADY NOTICE I'M READING FASTER!
I've always had trouble keeping my In Box at a manageable level, but it wasn't until recently that I realized that it just takes me longer to read things than it does everybody else. No wonder I feel like I'm always behind!

I didn't know there was really anything I could do about it without going to an expensive course until I listened to Master Reader. These exercises helped me see what was holding me back and showed me all sorts of tricks and tools I can use to increase my reading speed and improve my comprehension at the same time.

I was so tired of always playing catch-up; now I can plow through memos, emails and newspapers without worrying how long it's taking-and I can remember more of what I've read when I'm finished.

Master Reader convinced me that almost anyone can improve their productivity if they sharpen their speed reading skills; now I feel like I get more done in less time, and can control my workday and my work better than ever before.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Tool for Students.
I picked up SUPER READING SECRETS because I was and am still interested in learning as much as I possibly can.Being able to increase my reading speed would allow me to read more books than I can now and in turn I would learn more information. After reading the book, I do know how to increase my reading speed. The techniques that Berg suggests in SUPER READING SECRETS really do work, however, they are not something I intend to do frequently. I like reading.Even when studying, I take pleasure from most things I read. For me, there really isn't much distinction between reading for pleasure and reading for information and reading for studying.Just about everything I read is for pleasure. Most of the techniques that are suggested in the book are directed towards reading for information and reading for study.

Besides the speeding reading tips, the book is also full of useful study techniques and tips.If I was still a student in high school or college and had never discovered these tips and techniques on my own, then I would have found these parts of the book to be quite useful. However, since I already knew about these techniques I didn't get much out of these parts of the book either.

True to the title, SUPER READING SECRETS really does explain how a person can learn how to read one-page in three seconds. It takes time, but it does work.Students who have trouble studying from high school and college will get the most from this book. However, if you're someone like me who likes to read (even most textbooks) for pleasure, then you probably won't gain much from reading this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me
I took Berg's class and read this book, but I still can't read as fast or nearly as fast as him.I admit I read a lot faster now, but I can't say it is because of him.I owe it to practice.Simply, the more you read, the faster you will read and understand it better. There is no magic formula. One of the techniques Berg teaches is to use your hand as a guide to train your eyes to follow your hand, so the faster you move your hand, the faster your eyes move and therefore read faster.I actually read faster without the hand and using it just gives me headaches.Plus, if you really enjoy reading, I cannot believe reading a page in seconds will be an enjoyable experience. This may be a good thing for students trying to get all the information they need for exams. And the book provides some really good studying tips.Unfortunately when I read this, I already graduated. This is a must-read for all students.Berg is definitely a talented guy that can do what he claims, but you would have to be just as talented to used his speed reading techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Personal review of the book 'Super reading secrets', by Berg
Peace. I am a messenger and warner of God (warning of Hell, and propounding good news of Paradise). With regard to this book, I have some declaratives I wish to promulgate:

1) It is indeed good because it is CHEAP.

2) It is good because it is CONCISE (251 pages).

3) It is good because there are EXERCISES to aid comprehension.

4) It is good because it contains SUMMARIES to aid memory.

In light of this awareness, it follows as a logical consequence that a pursuit of this book with an intention to speed read would indeed be prudent and judicious. The author claims that being able to read a page in 3 seconds is possible, and one may react with a sense of astonishment at such an awesome promulgation. This may NOT be possible, although being able to read a page in approx. 5 secs IS POSSIBLE. Five seconds is indeed quick but it is possible because I have now accomplished it using the techniques in the book! Praise be to God!

The book urges an 8 WEEK program. However, being a genius myself, I accomplished a speed reading ability (i.e. a page in 5 seconds approx.) in approx. 2 days! Praise be to God! Buy this book and try speed reading yourself even if you are not a genius (it is NOT a pre-requisite).

5-0 out of 5 stars The class was pretty good too..
I recently took a class with Mr. Berg at the Learning Annex in Manhattan.Seven hours long!... It was very interesting, and yes my reading speed did double within the first half of the day, and by the end of the day I was at about 800 words/minute.Mr. Berg is an extremely wise man, very enthusiastic and encouraging, and I'm glad I did take the class which gave me some practice, making it a lot easier for me to understand his ideas in the rest of this book on my own time.Only a little disappointing was the fact that in both the book and the seven-hour lecture I experienced, the focus did seem to be on studying and special techniques for recalling and the like.He was able to answer any and all questions asked during the class, and I really trust that he's very accomplished and knowledgable on this subject.I learned a lot from him and from the book.Though this book seems pretty good, but I definitely plan on checking out some others on this subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Another Toke Over the Line"
'Just another in a spate of hallucinogenically self-evident books on reading like a maniac. I read faster than anyone I know, but I've always read faster than anyone I know. And, in evidence to my claim, whenasked questions about what I've read, I don't require that the questions be formatted as multiple choice or as verbal "meta tags" that merely require recognition/recall. I'm happy to provide context and interpretation. Of course, I may misinterpret, but the questioner can readily determine that I have thoroughly read the book and have a good grasp of its broad issues as well as many of its fine points.

The main reasons I read so quickly and effectively are:
***1. I learned to read very early--before first grade--and in an extremely positive and supportive atmosphere which made fast and attentive reading seem as normal as breathing. In short: I developed the HABIT of reading, reinforced EARLY, often, and for many years.
***2. I was MOTIVATED to read. My parents gave me extraordinary reinforcement through the manifest joy they shared with me in seeing me reading. (They also were brilliant professional people who were emotionally balanced and loving.) My reading "environment", that is, was superbly supportive.
***3. OPPORTUNITY. My home had thousands of books--a miscellany of types/genres. They were readily accessible whenever I wished to read.
***4. FOCUS. All the above factors gave me great powers of concentration when reading. I never remember NOT reading and haverarely felt anything but anticipatory pleasure when contemplating a book or article or poem, etc., I had intended to read. I was ready, willing, and able, with visceral pleasure, to plunge into a book.
***5. PLASTICITY OF READING TECHNIQUE. Like a tool kit, some items I read with mental verbalization (such as poetry) and others without verbalization (technical material). In general, the more affective or aesthetic in orientation, the more I'm likely to verbalize. (Who wants to speed read Shakespeare?)

The more sheerly informative or formally declarative a book is--that is, the more non-affective is its content, nothing is to be gained--except reinforcement of ineffective habits perhaps?--by subvocalizing the words. (Exceptions to the rule, to be discussed elsewhere: Some extraordinarily well-written informative literature has abstract beauty, architectonic economy, and/or intrinsic order--e.g., an elegantly written technical manual, or an ingeniously written computer program.) With such info-laden, and relatively affective-empty materials, I skip the subvocalization and dramatically accelerate my reading speed and factual comprehension. My selection of technique is invariably intuitive and immediate, without conscious choice. Even if I stop and contemplate the consequences of a given info-laden paragraph, I will have read that paragraph very quickly, without subvocalization. Following that reading, the subsequent few moments are invested in reflection upon that paragraph and perhaps its connections--its innate "hyperlinks" to other paragraphs within the same text, other texts, knowledge I otherwise have, and various degrees of conscious and semi-conscious connections to information, relationships, and experiences within my memory and current awareness.

Reading is not only about comprehension, fast or slow, as I have indicated in my observations about reading affective materials. Indeed, reading is also about: being affected by the reading; being transformed in heart and mind; reconceptualizing habitual thinking, perceptual, and feeling patterns; pure pleasure; vicarious participation in imaginary domains; etc. These are also reading skills, and skills that "power" or "photo" reading do not even address. They are options not considered. (Some do obliquely mention such reading skills/aspects, without addressing the concerns I've expressed. As such, the various speed reading books omit many of the aspects which make reading a valuable, exciting, and pleasurable experience, and which motivate many of us to read in the first place. If the authors were intellectually honest and clear with the reader, the entire genre of speed reading books would acknowledge that they primarily address info skimming and gleaning skills.)

No book can teach such intuitively and immediately available reading virtuosity within a few weeks, any more than any basketball coach can teach the fluid moves of Kobe Bryant in a summer clinic. Of course, there's a difference: all persons of normal intelligence, I submit, can develop a much greater degree of reading virtuosity, while physical virtuosity is more sharply related to biological determinates. Reading virtuosity is more a result of fortunately provided, or consciously chosen, psychological determinates, including the formation of determinable reading attitudes and habits.

Also, and not "PC" (politically correct): intelligence does make a difference. Of course it does! Does not rapid/ fast/ speed/ any-other-type-of-reading involve interpretation? Is the meaning and implications of the words, sentences, and paragraphs self-evident? Of course not! So intelligence must necessarily matter. Yet, importantly, none of this should dissuade any of us from working to improve reading skills, of which speed is only one component (if an important one). We all can. I am simply arguing against any misplaced "affirmative action" in reading education. You are where you are in your skills. Accurate assessment is vital. You will do yourself no favors by fantasizing of reading pages at one glance. (Yes, you can learn to skim very quickly and effectively, and remember an enormous amount of information--especially when such skimming is complemented by interspersed and selective reading of chosen sections of the material you're reading. If one has never learned to so skim, and especially if one also reads slowly and ineffectively, learning to skim with skill can seem like an epiphany! One's new skimming skills produce results that are superior to one's previous reading results. One is thus converted to Berg's or Scheele's "super reading" or "photoreading", misinterpreting the chosen reading system as THE reading system.

Quick attitude changes, I suspect, can immediately help develop better reading skills by simply moving the reader from his/her (unfortunately) typical somnambulistic state to a more conscious and focused state of mind. That shift of conscious purpose may be the chief value--to the extent there is value--in such books as Howard Stephen Berg's (or Paul Scheele's). ... Read more
