4-0 out of 5 stars From Fancy to Everyday Fare...
This cookbook - like all of Marilyn Moore's cookbooks - provides clear, straightforward recipies that can be mastered by cooks of all levels. From fancy fowl recipies suitable for holidays (and presented as such) to daily recipies, such as roasted chicken and vegetables - it doesn't disappoint. A nice array of side dishes - plain to fancy - are also presented.

More than 600 pages of beloved and classic recipes, all tested and proven in the kitchens of your favorite food manufacturers.

These are the recipes you meant to clip and save: the ones on that jar label, those cans, on the back of the box. They come from the test kitchens of America's food manufacturers--Kraft, Borden, Libby's and more--and every dish has become one of the nation's favorites. Everybody loves these classics: Kellogg's® Crunchy Baked Chicken, Campbell's® Scalloped Potatoes, the original Chex Party Mix, Rice Krispies Marshmallow Treats, Vanilla "Philly" Frosting. There's even a recipe from the Tabasco® hot pepper sauce people for Irish Stew that was developed by James Beard. 5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic cookbook to have on hand
This is a nostalgic little book to keep on hand.It is thick and hard to keep open, but I have enjoyed many recipes from the good old days in here.My favorite is still the "Magic Cookie Bars" (7 layer bars that every girl made in junior high in the 60s before boys were allowed to cook).I received this as a gift and still keep using it after many years.Get one for a gift this year for a Baby Boomer who will REALLY appreciate it--made WAAAAAAAAYYY before the days when nutrition labels were added.Great memories and recipes for the price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Easy and fun to use
This is the easiest cookbook I have. You usually have 90 pct of what you need already in your kitchen. After I was given this book by my 80 year old father in law, I bought 3 more for my sons and daughter.
Give this one to anyone that hates to cook....This is a life changer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY USEFUL COOKBOOK OFTEN OVERLOOKED WHICH IS A TRUE PITY.
I have to say that this is one of the most fun, nostalgic, practical and enjoyable cookbooks in our collection.Over the years we have used it many times and still do so.

The title of this work sort of says it all. This indeed is a collection of all those recipes you find on the back of boxes, cans, jars and such, published by the maker of the product found inside the container. Now logic would tell you that these companies would not print a horrid, difficult or bad tasting recipe and attach it to their product with a recommendation that you try it.No, no, no!These food companies are trying to sell you their product, over and over and over again. This is how they make their money. They desperately want to put their best foot forward. And I must say that they almost always do!

I doubt seriously if you attend a church dinner, organization or community potluck, family gathering, etc. that you will be able to go through the food line without running into at least one of the recipes featured in this work. Many of the dishes here have become so ingrained in our eating culture that the original source is completely lost, and indeed, many have gone into the realm of "old secret family recipes that have been pasted down generation after generation."Little do we know that Aunt Grace or Granny actually copped the dish from the back of a can or box years ago and passed it on as her own.

There is something is this work for just about every one; whether it be main dishes, desserts, appetizers, snacks, sauces, salads, soups, sandwiches, breads, or just "stuff."All of the directions are extremely simple to follow; so simple in fact, that this is a great book to present the young lad or lass that is off to college and away from home for the first time. The eats in this work are far, far better that the microwave noodles, frozen microwaveable pizza or the offerings of the local fast food joint.

Now I note that at least one reviewer has stated that most of the recipes in the work are outdated and that many of the products listed here are no longer available. This is absolute cod wallop. Some of these recipes do indeed go back to the 1930s and 1940s but I have not found one where substitutions could not be made, if indeed actually needed.I hate to say it, but people really should read and use a cookbook before they review it.

Anyway...

Another big plus in owning this book is that all of the recipes featured are not only relatively easy to make, they are also relative fast. Most of them take very little time to throw together.Of course the biggest reason for using this work is that most of the dishes are quite good andyou will be missing out on a lot of good eating by not using it.

This review was of the 1993 Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best recipies from the backs of boxes, bottles cans & jars
My wife saw this book at a home we used in October. She indicated she could never get a copy because of the age of the book.Amazon had it and boy was she surprizrd at Christmas when she got her copy.GREAT>

Amazon, you did good!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Old recipes
There are other versions of this book that might be better. This has no pictures and the recipes are all quite old. Some of the ingredients are not even available for purchase anymore. Many of the recipes are dated, some going back to early 1900's. Overall, the entire book contained maybe 5 recipes that I am willing to try. If you are looking to purchase this book, you might want to try purchasing Ceil Dyer's latest version of it in hopes of finding some newer recipes! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent casserole cookbook
First, I have the paperback version--which only costs about five books. This book is well worth it for that price. . . .

Cream of chicken soup (one can), water, white rice, black pepper, frozen mixed vegetables, boneless chicken breasts, cheddar cheese. Put it in one dish and cook. . . . This is one of the recipes in this casserole cookbook. Easy to make and tasty to eat.

Each page features two recipes--on one side is a picture and the recipe on the other. You can tear the recipes out to put in a recipe box (I leave them in the book!). The recipes, for the most part, read easily and look quite doable.

One downer? There are only 76 recipes (I like lots in a book). Still, this is one of those books that you buy at grocery store checkouts, so a 500 page tome probably isn't possible.

For a short work, this has many easy to make and, seemingly, tasty dishes for the household. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars That Dana Carpender Knows Her Stuff
Of all the low carb cookbooks I own, those by Dana Carpender really strike a chord with me.I like her books for several reasons.

In the beginning, she covers items essential to a low carb pantry and her product knowledge is vast. For example, she explains the difference among soy powder, soy flour and soy milk as well as discussing different polyols and their pros and cons, and includes resources for online purchase of low carb products.

Her books do not just contain one or 2 recipes that one might use, but many that are worth a try. When I am looking for a low carb recipe, I go first to Dana.I have done breads, muffins, quiches, catsup, eggplant parmesan, mockalhua and stuffed mushrooms, to name a few.

Finally, she writes in a breezy style that I find appealing, and offers suggestions for options and substitutions in the recipes.Reading her books has given me many ideas as to how to create the foods I want to eat while keeping the carbs under control. As I am not great fan of eggs, seemingly the mainstay of low carb breakfasting, her breakfast and baked goods recipes are most useful to me.

I currently own 3 of her books and although I already own too many cookbooks, I'm being tempted to buy her slow cooker book.I would unreservedly recommend her books to anyone who wants to move those high carb foods out of his/her kitchen, replace them with low carb substitutes and use those substitutes to create tasty, low carb dishes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dana rocks every time
I have to say I am biased.I have been follow Dana for a long time, via internet at first, then through her book "How I Gave up my Low Fat Diet and Lost 40 lbs."Now I collect her cook books.Sometimes a recipe is so simple it's more of a "why didn't I think of that" and other times it's an elaborate luxury.Either way, the majority of the recipes in her books fit right with my own tastes.Any serious low carb lifer needs her books as the variety and creativity will enrich their dining experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Consistently Good
I liked this book so much that I bought a second one for my daughter.Although it does use products that I haven't bought, and vegetables like cauliflower that don't really taste like potatoes, the recipes are enjoyed by all members of the family. She goes to a lot of trouble to point us into a direction where we are not using tons of bowls and pans, which I really appreciate. Many of the recipes are quick and easy to make as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why would anyone sell this book!
I bought this book used from Amazon.com and frankly I was skeptical. The reviews are what made me buy it. I have bought cookbooks in the past and paid up to $30.00 for them and was able to use only 1, maybe 2, recipes from the book. This book is AWESOME!I am actually reading it page for page.I tried 2 recipes the day I got it and can't wait to try more.I am about to order all Dana's other books.Again my question is why would anyone ever sell this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A low carbers life saver!
Even though I have always loved to cook, I lost the desire to do so after starting the low carb lifestyle a little over a year ago. Bland salads and grilled chicken breasts were my staples. I found myself browsing the cookbook section of a book store one day and began flipping through Dana's book - I was hooked. I picked it up and spent 4 hours straight reading everything (I had a long car ride to do so). I spent about two weeks making all sorts of recipes from this book and fell in love with cooking all over again. I still use recipes from this and several of her other books several times a week, but I finally popped back into the creative mood and spend the other days experimenting with my own low carb recipes!! Thanks Dana. (c:

This was a gift for my mother. We really enjoy eating out and wondered if we could find recipes for the foods we love. When I saw this book on amazon I thought I would give it a try. My mom has already made the red lobster cheddar bay biscuits, which tasted almost identical to the restaurant's biscuits, which we just love. She has also tried the pasta e fagioli from the olive garden. That was also good. But you might want to add a little more v-8 juice than the recipe calls for. Because withiut it the soup was a little thick. I look forward to trying more of our favorites. ... Read more

Packed with mouthwatering color illustrations, this classic British cookbook contains a wealth of tempting traditional recipes. The book also explores the history behind some of the key dishes in British cooking, from 14th-century macaroni cheese to 19th-century mulligatawny soup, and the introductions to each chapter provide a fascinating account of our culinary traditions and influences. This is one of those books that makes you drool just anticipating what you want to try first.Complete Traditional Recipe Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive collection of English Receipts!
I have found that British food - especially the traditional foods that have stood the test of time - have much more to offer than the blanket dismissal of them would suggest. Have you ever had a well-made "Toad-In-The-Hole?" or a great "Sherry Trifle?" How about a nice Pork Pie or Eel Stew. Well, done right, these dishes can change the way you think about British food and British food traditions. Not sure, start with something foolproof like Kedgeree - really just rice, smoked haddock, hard-boiled eggs and spices. Great for breakfast, lunch or dinner! And quite a treat! Some cookbook features include: Nice pictures and quite a few of them. A crazy 70's font that seems to be just right for the subject. Comprehensive collection of recipes covering every "discipline" from soups and meat dishes to hot and cold puddings to drinks and confectionery. Some quick and interesting historical context is thrown in for those who require and enjoy it. Perfect for the anglophile or international cook in your household.

Love this book- many fine recipes. Only problems I found was the need for a food glossary, as many items contained in the book are not found in the US. (i.e.) Golden Syrup, blood pudding, ratafia biscuits. I was able to go online and search most of these out though, so it was ok, and really interesting to hunt ingredients down. The color photos are wonderful, and it is a high quality book, produced by the National Trust. ... Read more

If I had known how easy and actually pedestrian these recipies were I would not have bought the book. However; with lots of easy to follow directions and loads of color photos I found it made a perfect gift for one of my children who wanted to step up to a higher level.
If you are searching for an inexpensive gift for a college student or single young person with a budding interest in cooking and entertaining; this is perfect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Really good, but not as good as the first
I purchased both the first and second annual of this item. The first one is great, this one is really good as well. The only thing I didn't like was that many of the recipes call for the same ingredients. That may be what some folks are looking for, but I just like more variety in my choices. The recipes are easy to follow and have all turned out exactly as described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipes you'll really use!
I have both volumes of Fine Cooking Annual, and I use them both all the time. The tips and supplementary material are clear and informative. I no longer have a problem obtaining nice caramelization on zucchini, thanks to the tip of salting them first to pull out excess water.
These are gourmet-quality recipes without crazy-long ingredient lists. ... Read more

Product Description

Cooking with the Bible provides a feast for the body, mind, and spirit, introducing contemporary cooks to recipes for eighteen meals described in the Judeo-Christian bible. Each chapter begins with the menu for a biblical feast, followed by a brief essay describing the theological, historical, and cultural significance of the feast. Next are separate recipes for the dishes served in the meal, followed by more commentary on the dish itself, preparation methods used in biblical times, and how the dish was served.

Since biblical times, the Judeo-Christian lifestyle has centered on meals. Extending hospitality to both friends and strangers was a divine command, and an invitation to dine was sacred. The Judeo-Christian bible is peppered with stories of meals; these range from simple meals put together quickly in order to feed a few unexpected guests, to elaborate feasts carefully prepared to please dozens of partygoers for many days. Cooking with the Bible looks at eighteen of these meals found in the Scriptures, providing full menus and recipes for re-creating some of the dishes enjoyed by the peoples of biblical times. While describing how ancient cooks prepared their foods, Cooking with the Biblealso explains how contemporary cooks might use modern techniques and appliances to prepare each of the eighteen meals. To set the scene for each meal, the book examines the scriptural text in detail, describes the backstory for each, and, in the process, traces Judeo-Christian history from the ancient city of Ur to the lands of Egypt to the holy city of Jerusalem. Along the way, the reader will learn about the history of the bible itself. In the Middle East, eating was not and is not for daily sustenance alone—it is a way of life, and Cooking with the Bible reflects that reality, providing multiple feasts for the body, mind, and spirit.

Each chapter begins with the menu for a biblical feast. A brief essay describing the theological, historical, and cultural significance of the feast follows. Next come separate recipes for the dishes served in the meal, followed by more commentary on the dish itself, preparation methods used in biblical times, and how the dish was served. Recipes for a wide variety of breads, stews, rice and lentil dishes, lamb, goat, fish and venison meals, vegetable salads and cakes are detailed, all of them carefully tested. Make delicious dishes such as Rice of Beersheba, Rebekah's Tasty Lamb Stew, Date and Walnut Bread, Ful Madames and Scrambled Eggs, Pistachio Crusted Sole, Bamya, Goat's Milk and Pomegranate Syrup Torte, Haroset a la Greque, Pesach Black Bread, Watermelon Soup with Ginger and Mint, Date Manna Bread, Oven-baked Perch with Tahini, Braided Challah with Poppy Seeds and Lemon, and Friendship Cake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn More About Food in Biblical Times
Each chapter begins with a biblical passage, a historical exploration, notes on the passage, the menu, the preparation and the recipes. I found the preparation section to be most interesting with insights into what the biblical terms meant (for example, John the Baptist likely ate carob beans, the fruit of the locust tree, not the insects), what foods were available at the time and some explanation of the recipes included.

The meals were tested on real people and tested by real people (a church Bible class). While I might not make many of the recipes because of the ingredients (some of which are quite authentic, using camel milk and goat meat and even a recipe for locust soup!) and the number of servings, this book is a carefully researched and creatively presented history of food in the Bible and biblical times. It would be an excellent addition to a biblical library.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit of Exaggeration
This cookbook contains 18 biblical meals, 6 relating to the Gospels, each preceded by the biblical text, relevant history and notes on the biblical passage. There are ~9-12 recipes per meal, nicely presented but with small, black-and-white photos, followed by a meal-specific bibliography. It also contains a dated chronology of the events, maps, weights and measures, and 150 pages of food lore.

The meals included are: Abraham serving the angels, Esau's birthright meal, Esau's blessing meal, Joseph eating at the Egyptian palace, with his long-lost brothers, Passover, a combination of food eaten when they wandered in the desert for forty years and what they whined about missing from Egypt, a combination of Ruth's meal with Boaz and those eaten during the festival of Shavuot, Abigail's meal for David and his men, David's wedding feast, the potential wedding feast for the love-sick couple in the Song of Solomon, Elisha's meal at Gilgal, what Nehemiah ate with his workers, the traditional foods celebrating Purim, when Esther saved her people from annihilation, food John the Baptist may have encountered by the Jordan River, the feast celebrating the return of the prodigal son, Jesus' dinner with a Pharisee, the wedding feast at Cana, and the breakfast Jesus cooked for the disciples on the shores of the Galilee, after his resurrection.

The authors are rather creative in their take on what might have been eaten. I'm guessing John the Baptist didn't really eat honey-carob brownies, or honey-roasted lamb with cous-cous. That said, they do point out their liberal take on things, and they also encompass a very large topic in their recipes - e.g., while they say they are naming it a meal in the wilderness, and expanding that in the explanatory text to include anything John might have encountered by the Jordan River, the recipes expand yet again to include Zechariah's (his father the priest) Temple Loaf. There's nothing wrong with this - given the limited information available, it's rather necessary to cover quite a range, but don't buy it expecting to receive exactly what would have been eaten. They are modern takes on it, quite suitable for a unique twist on the old church or synagogue social.

The section on the lore of the ingredients gives information on every conceivable ingredient, including `vanilla, madagascar bourbon, `zaatar' and crabapple jelly!

A lot of the value in this book, as opposed to books like Kitty Morse's cookbook `A Biblical Feast,' is the combination of historical information, culinary background, and organization by biblical meal. I have to say, there are a mighty lot of feasts - a chapter on daily food, such as `A Fishermen's Meal,' or `A Farmers Meal,' would have been nice. Or perhaps `A Priests Meal' - what did the Temple priests eat?

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
When one buys a book titled Cooking with the BIBLE: Biblical Food, Feasts, and Lore, he has a right to expect biblical food. Why would educated authors design menus to include ingredients that had yet to cross the Atlantic and had certainlynever crossed the lips of Joseph, David, Esther or even the Prodigal Son? Was Biblical fare so limited that we have to pretend that Sarah served squash and tomatoes, that Jacob used chocolate and green beans, that Bathsheba ate crispy baked potatoes and that Elisha nibbled corn from the cob? Other geographically or chronologically impossible foods include peppers, vanilla, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, pineapple, pecans, ketchup, lima beans, cranberry juice, coffee, turkey, cashews, vermouth and gin. The authors aren't ignorant (in the back of the book they discuss food origins), they just employed a misleading title. If you want an accurate portrayal of food in the Bible, skip this book; buy it only if you want a very expensive Mediterranean style cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intriguing, different guide.
Judeo-Christian cooking has long centered on meals as a form of not only sustenance, but hospitality. Most cookbooks covering such cuisine focuses on the recipes; but COOKIGN WITH THE BIBLE: BIBLICAL FOOD, FEASTS AND LORE is different: recipes here are plentiful but secondary to the historical review of meal contents, rituals, and underlying cultural meaning. Bible stories of meals form the foundation of recipes which begin with a menu for a biblical feast, an essay surveying its historical and cultural significance, and explanations of traditional versus modern cooking methods. Any cook who also harbors affection for the Bible will find COOKING WITH THE BIBLE an intriguing, different guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A BIBLICAL SCHOLAR TO APPRECIATE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN CULINARY EXPERTISE
No. The Bible is not a cookbook, however, its history is a great source for culinary research. Performing this research was Anthony F. Chiffolo, Editorial Director of Praeger Publishers and prolific author and Rayner W. Hesse, Jr., an Episcopal priest. They titled their interesting compilation, Cooking with the Bible. Mediterranean cooking is exciting due a bold use of fruits, nuts and wheats with vegetables and some meat. The area's recommended wines are paired with each meal. This is healthy eating!

The feasts, or "The Meals" presented number 18, some of which are:

Joseph Dines with His Brothers
The Reapers' Meal
Kind David's Nuptials
Elisha Cooks Masterfully at Gilgal
The Prodigal Son Returns
The Wedding Feast at Cana

The general formatting for each menu is thus:

* Maps
* Chronology
* Biblical text lining out the feast
* Historic explanation
* The menu
* Preparation in Biblical times
* Recipes for preparation in today's kitchens
* Finally a lengthy "Lore of the Ingredients" section

One of the meals, The prodigal Son Returns, as others, has interesting names, as well as familiar, for each recipe. This particular feast:

Poor Lad's Loaf
Veal Kebabs
Honey-Baked Goat with Mint Sauce
Heifer Fondue
Fresh Mallow with Pomegranate Vinaigrette
Grilled Corn on the Cob
Fresh Kefir Yogurt with Concord Grapes
Figs in Chamomile Tea and Cream
Carob Cake for Two Sons

Some interesting recipe food combinations:

* Rice of Beersheba:Combines broth, basmati rice, dill and capers.

* Israeli Salad:Calls for cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, parsley, olive oil, lemon, green pepper, scallions and the spice, zataar.

* Fasooleyah Khodra Bi Zeit:(Arabian Beans and Sun-dried Tomatoes):Largely Green beans, onions, garlic, allspice, basmati rice and dried tomatoes

* Aroz de Bodas (Sephardic Wedding Rice:A mold of basmati rice, scallions, turmeric, seedless green grapes, pine nuts and fresh mint leaves

* Field Herbs with Corn:To corn they add vinegar, lemon juice, garlic, marjoram, dill, parsley, bay leaf and sumac.

* Musakhan (Chicken and Onion Bread):Mixes chicken, olive oil, lemon, scallions, garlic, saffron, sumac, cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne and pine nuts atop any flatbread

* Vegetable Cholent:Mixes lima beans, kidney beans, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, barley, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers and garlic, cayenne, sage, cumin, ginger and feta cheese

* Wilderness Squash:Combines Acorn squash, honey, pistachios, dried apricots. Butter, onions and Angostura bitters

* St. Peter's Fish with Parsley Sauce:Utilizes a pesto of parsley, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and onion and bass or trout

* Manaish with Goat Cheese: s Spread flatbread with a mixture of olive oil, zaatar, sumac and goat cheese. Serve with peppermint tea.

This well-researched book is pricey, however it's an excellent reference source and very possibly might serve as a format for a years-worth of fare for culinary groups' gatherings.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Are What We Eat -- Oh So True
Wanna cook up something a little different, like say a sample of Indian cuisine on your hubby's plate? Well, tried the "Curried Mashed Potatoes" on Page 354 of this delightful low fat cookbook. The peas mixed with the potatoes set off with a tangy curry powder makes for a tasty potato dish. There are a lot of other tasty, low fat recipes in this book that I come back to again and again. like the "Pasta e Fagioli Soup" on Page 141, a perfect beginning to a meal. After all, who says all meals must start with salad. However, if you believe that, try the "Summer Herb Tomato Salad on Page 70.

With this book you can eat well and eat healthy at the same time, something my husband didn't think possible till I started pruning recipes from this book and a few other. Ms. Golson really knows her stuff. She opens the book with the words "There is no longer any doubt that we are what we eat," and that is oh so true. If you want to slim down, but not feel like you're eating cardboard, give this book a look, you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious!
I don't even remember how my husband and I acquired this cookbook but we've had it for years.Everything we've made from this book has been absolutely wonderful!Everything has so much taste and even though I don't eat meat other than chicken and turkey, I've substituted meats before in various recipes and they still come out really good.I have never enjoyed cooking because of the time factor and some recipes are so hard to follow but NOT IN THIS BOOK!The recipes are pretty quick and easy and even newbie cooks will love this book!To give you an example, I have a toddler and I am actually able to cook a meal from this book in under about 30 minutes (which is about the time it takes before she starts getting bored and wanting my attention!)

I have seriously not had one bad meal from this cookbook.I also love that it lists the nutrition information, because I count calories for weight loss and maintenance and with them listed I don't have to guess or calculate on my own.A major plus!!

I highly recommend this cookbook!I hope they make it available on Kindle soon because our book is starting to fall apart!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this cookbook!
I love this cookbook! The recipes are sensible with simple ingredients 90 percent of the time. The lowfat variations work well.I can tell the recipes have been worked through. The book is organized beautifully.I've enjoyed reading it and plotting my next lowfat delicious culinary adventure. Also, the author gives all manner of helpful information regarding the food.ie when cooking quinoa, to rinse thoroughly first to get rid of the soapy residue from the grain.I envy this woman's family and their great meals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes!
I think this is a great recipe book with hundreds of really good recipes.
I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My "Go To" cookbook
This is easily the best cookbook of the many I own.Every recipe that I have tried has been excellent. Moreover, the recipes meet my ingredients/time standards: not more than 5-10 ingredients that i would normally already have or buy plus not more than 30 minutes of hands-on time.I originally had the paperback edition which I wore out and subsequently purchased the hardcover.I expect i will use it for many many more years. ... The martini, once thought of as an old drink with gin, vermouth and olives has come a long way. Martinis are now made in any number of flavors with an ever increasing ingredient list. If a classic martini doesn't interest you, try a fruit flavored martini, such as watermelon, apple, banana or kiwi. If you're looking for a completely unique martini flavor, try a chocolate mint or double fudge martini. These are only examples of some of the martini flavors you will find in this book. The martini is no longer a drink ordered by a select few bar patrons. Martinis are hot sellers and make up a large portion of bar sales each year. Martini drinkers are abundant enough where bars and clubs are designing specialty martinis exclusive to their establishment. The only perfect martini is the martini that suits your palate. Recipes are categorized by base ingredient: gin, vodka, rum, etc. Includes a complete index. Recipes are concise and easy to follow. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nearly worthless
Other than having a pretty cover, there is nothing to recommend this book at all. It is printed on cheap stock, there are no pictures, and little besides an endless list of mediocre drinks. Most infuriating was the "Parrothead Martini" consisting of tequila, lime juice and orange liquere...does this sound familiar? Yes, but it's not a martini. Nor are the many rum drinks either. There are plenty of good books out there, so seek them out and give this one a pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Reference
Just recently, I have found a fondness for Martini's.Love the Cosmo'c (like in Sex & The City) and other flavors.Being a novice, I purchased this hand little book and it's wonderful.Easy to follow the mixes and so many varieties. It was rated high and I recommend it to anyone who already drinks or is a novice.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fun book
I find the martini to be more of an experience than a drink. I really like this book. The recipes are new to me and they're young and fun. The book is organized well by base of the drink, whether it be rum, vodka, or gin, (even bourbon and tequila). This makes drinks easy to find on the Kindle. I recommend it highly. Cheers! ... Crunchy top with a creamy constrasting creamy and soften underneath, this describes "gratin."

They can be savory or sweet --- appetizer, dessert, sidedish or main course -- they can be in many different containers -- with many different toppings, yet the result is there --- crunchy top with creamy, soft under.

One is astounded when this gorgeous paged beauty is turned, with its luscious photos and breathtaking array of diverse toppings and fillings. While most of the time we think of gratin in sense of the classic potato gratins or vegetable gratins, this leads us further into "Gratineed Grapefruit"; "Artichoke Crowns Stuffed with Saffron-Scented Crab" (yummy to the max!); "Butternut Squash and Pecan Gratin with Goat Cheese"; "Green Apple, Yukon Gold, and Sweet Potato Gratin"' "Halibut Gratin with Coconut Sauce"; "Tangelo Custard Gratin"; "Gratineed Strawberry Sabayon."

3-0 out of 5 stars Diabetic cookbook
I really haven't made a lot of the recipes from this cookbook. A lot of the recipes are things that my husband and I won't eat. Maybe at a later time I will use it more.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite weeknight cookbooks
I am not diabetic, nor is anyone in my family, but this is one of my favorite cookbooks. Almost every recipe I've tried from this book is cheap, fast, easy, healthy, and tasty. I'm a very adventurous eater, but when cooking for myself, the biggest problem tends to be the cost of picking up boxes and bottles of ingredients that might only end up being used once. Most of the ingredients called for in this book are things I already have in the pantry or freezer anyway.

This is one book that will stay on my shelf for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderfully helpful little book!uses real food, no exotic ingredients.
i relied on other amazon reviewers to choose this book.

i'm back to purchase one as an x-mas gift for a dear friend.
i used a marketplace seller and the book arrived quickly and in new condition for a fraction of the new price.great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing
I eat a lot of from scratch food, usually on a vegetarian tilt. I bought this book for myself and my recently diagnosed daughter. To be honest, most of the recipes aren't something I see myself eating. It isn't what I eat, (salads, lean meats) but the quantities that I eat that cause me problems.

For someone who has little idea of how or what to cook, this would be helpful. For someone who has cooked healthy for years, it is redundant and ugly.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU!!!This is a great recipe book
Finally, quick recipes! Some of the recipes you get in other books have way too much prep time or are too complicated to make.I think this is the best resource for someone with diabetes who has to watch sugar/carb intake.I hope more versions of this book comes out. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so
Meh.The recipes in this cookbook are very finicky, in my opinion.I've only bothered to try one recipe so far, and it really wasn't worth all the time and effort that it took to make the meal.A waste of shelf space!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the best.
This had some really tasty recipes that my boyfriend did enjoy. However, the way I see it, men love food no matter what it is and they'll eat almost anything. Some of these recipes were perhaps a little too "gourmet" for my meat and potatoes man. Not a waste of money, but you shouldn't expect a marriage proposal by making him the lamb chops, but he might help you with the dishes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Food Men Love, Men Love the book
As far as cook books go Margie Lapanja has out done herself. I have enjoyed reading all of Margie's books about food as much as cooking some of the recipes. Food Men Love is no exception. Most people will have no problem with these simple and tasty recipes. I didn't...

Enjoyed it trememdously...

Margie Lapanja (Goddess in the Kitchen and Goddess' Guide to Love) doesn't miss a beat with this one,a must-have for the kitchen! It's another of Lapanja's playful invitations to bring magic back into the kitchen and all of us back to the table!

This is food WE ALL love!As with Lapanja's other kitchen secrets, the recipes are not only fun to stir up.Once you learn about them from the Goddess, you'll never see them quite the same way again!
