3-0 out of 5 stars Hours of Fun! Until...
This is the book that got my 2-yr old hooked on Bob the Builder. Before he realized there was TV show or videos or even toys, we got this as a gift, and he could not stop playing with it. Eventually, when he realized there was so much more to the BTB world, his appreciation for this book skyrocketed.

He has learned a lot from the book, progressing from just putting the stickers anywhere in a big pile, to placing them intelligently (like the garbage bags in Scoop's digger, and Bird on Roley's roof). As with all BTB toys and books, he loves to go through and name everyone and sing the songs about them. In all, we got a lot of use from this.

So why only three stars? Because eventually, theh stickers just stopped sticking (about 3 or 4 months of frequent use). They have no "cling" anymore and tend to just curl up when you open the book. We've tried dampening them and pressing them between the pages of a book, but the thing is just tapped now and has become a source of frustration to both son and his parents. And it's too bad becuase he still likes it and wants to play with it. Also, as a parent, be warned that you'll be keeping track of over 40 little pieces, and God forbid you lose the Pilchard sticker or one of the Dizzies. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Another useful guide, but nothing groundbreaking
During the course of researching an upcoming book on environmental issues, I've been required to read a number of practical guides on saving money while protecting the environment. Many of these books follow the same cookie-cutter format: group the advice into themes, for example, room-by-room; begin each entry with a vague overview of the dilemma; present advice to help stem the problem; and conclude by offering a list of additional resources."Beyond Recycling" is no exception: its tips are grouped in an encyclopedic format, with entries organized A to Z; each section begins by briefly describing the environmental issue in one to four short paragraphs, then counters with several tips to help combat the problem; and usually ends with a few "Helpful Resources" that interested readers can follow up on.

The author succeeds in providing her audience with "336 Practical Tips" to "Save Money and Protect the Environment."The book is a good resource for those who want quick, practical, and efficient tips to conserve cash and help the planet. The entries are nicely organized so that information can be found quickly and without much searching.Although the grouping of the tips is self-explanatory, Ms. Stein really should have included an index as well, as some of the advice could be given more than one title, and some of the entries deal with more than one issue/activity.However, this is a minor point, particularly since the volume is relatively short and straightforward.

A bigger complaint I have with this guide (and most other environmental "how-to" books) is the author's failure to document her claims.Although I consider myself an avid environmentalist and have no doubts that we're steadily spoiling the earth, I'm also wise enough to acknowledge that many of my peers don't share my sentiments (isn't that why we're in this mess?).While those who are already concerned with environmental issues might not question these sort of general, unreferenced statements, such arguments won't succeed in convincing more skeptical readers that there is indeed a problem that needs to be addressed.Of course, I realize that these types of guides are targeted at the former audience, but it would be a nice bonus if "nature nerds" such as myself could also use them to persuade our disbelieving friends and family.

Product Description
More Americans recycle than vote. And most do so to improve their communities and the environment. But do recycling programs advance social, economic, and environmental goals? To answer this, three sociologists with expertise in urban and environmental planning have conducted the first major study of urban recycling. They compare four types of programs in the Chicago metropolitan area: a community-based drop-off center, a municipal curbside program, a recycling industrial park, and a linkage program. Their conclusion, admirably elaborated, is that recycling can realize sustainable community development, but that current programs achieve few benefits for the communities in which they are located.

The authors discover that the history of recycling mirrors many other urban reforms. What began in the 1960s as a sustainable community enterprise has become a commodity-based, profit-driven industry. Large private firms, using public dollars, have chased out smaller nonprofit and family-owned efforts. Perhaps most troubling is that this process was not born of economic necessity. Rather, as the authors show, socially oriented programs are actually more viable than profit-focused systems. This finding raises unsettling questions about the prospects for any sort of sustainable local development in the globalizing economy.

Based on a decade of research, this is the first book to fully explore the range of impacts that recycling generates in our communities. It presents recycling as a tantalizing case study of the promises and pitfalls of community development. It also serves as a rich account of how the state and private interests linked to the global economy alter the terrain of local neighborhoods. ... Read more

Product Description

Easy Quilts from Your Closet is a guide to making the most of the fabrics you love. Quilting is a great way to recycle T-shirts, blue jeans, neckties, pj’s , and even prom dresses—to give old favorites a quick and cozy makeover.

These fifteen projects teach three of the most basic quilting techniques: patchwork piecing, foundation piecing, and applique. Readers learn how to “deconstruct” their favorite garments and then reconstruct the pieces to form the small individual blocks that are stitched together to form a quilt.

Block by block, they’ll learn how to make quilt tops and “sandwiches” and then decoratively stitch their surfaces by machine—with straight lines or freeform shapes. They’ll also learn how to assemble blocks to make three full sampler quilts, adding sashing, binding, and designer labels.

Would you feel better if you knew how to put an action plan together in order to make positive changes in your home, your neighborhood and your city?

A lot of people have been personally impacted by the problem with waste and with the environment whether they realize it or not!

Toxic pollutants impact everyone. Global warming impacts everyone.

If you aren't concerned about the future of our planet already, you might be someone who needs a dose of harsh reality. A lot of people think they're doing their part by rinsing and recycling their soda cans but alone, it's just NOT enough.

Here's what you need to know about:

There are many different types of pollution that could be impacting your health and the environment

Water pollution is at a dangerous level and can impact the environment in massive ways

There are more than just direct waste impacts to the planet. Indirect impact can be just as devastating!

The barriers to recycling that you can help with

How to influence politics and political agendas to help the planet

Practicing advanced recycling in your home and elsewhere in your community

The threat of waste impacts more than just our health. It impacts our financial future as well because of the costs associated with purchasing goods, disposing of waste and spending from our own pockets.

We've somehow moved to a disposable society where we spend inordinate amounts of money on buying new stuff constantly. Disposable dishes, disposable appliances and gadgets…it is unhealthy and has to stop!

Reading the book, "Everything YOU Always Wanted To Know About RECYCLING...But NEVER Dared To Ask!" can be an eye opening and life changing experience that does more than tell you about the state of the world as a result of waste but it also tells you how to go about creating an action plan in your life that can contribute to a healthier, greener planet.

There are some startling facts in the book:

How much paper are you wasting? Did you know that more than 35% of the trees that are cut down are paper that gets ultimately wasted by going to a landfill where it takes many years to break down?

Old refrigerators that have been sitting in landfills for ages continue to leech chemicals into the atmosphere to harm our protective ozone layer

Old computers from the 1970's and 1980's (and even more recent ones now deemed obsolete by their former owners) are still sitting in landfills harming the environment as we speak.

Plastic waste that's in our landfills now can alter our hormones and impact animal and people's reproductive systems and even our behavior patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Fix-up Old Houses and Make Big Money - A Hidden Gem
Although this book was published 27 years ago, it is still an excellent book with much useful advise. This is one of only two books I know of that actually lists all 30 properties that the authors purchased, including addresses, purchase price, rental income, sales price and total income.(Back in the 1960's and 1970's to make a million dollars, you had to do more than just buy 4 or 5 houses, like we do today.) The other book that did it, which is also an excellent book it you can find it, was co-author Mary Weir's book, "House Recycling",written a few years later. This kind of information alone makes the book a great resource, along with the pictures and descriptions of how each house was purchased and rennovated. The authors started small but worked their way up to huge mansions.

The book is divided into two parts. One part explains the process that the authors went through to find and buy their houses. The second part goes into details about tools to use and how to actually make repairs on the houses.

In the same vein, another book that is worth having is Lawrence Dworin's book "Profits in Buying & Renovating Homes."The version I have was published in 1990, and some of the renovating techniques apply to pumbling and electical issues in the past, but most of the advice is still applicable today.

The Sam and Mary Weir book is a hidden gem that hasn't lost any luster over the years.
