Tread carefully and you'll be fine
This book must be taken in the spirit it is written, which is to expand upon Reiki's path into the west.There are arguments around the rewriting of the history of Reiki to include aspects thought not to have been originally taught by Mikao Usui, such as the kotodama, variations on transmitting attunements, and the insight into Usui's experience that led to the formalization of Reiki as a system.I completely respect those arguments and feel a sense of protection for the traditional study and the culture that created it.With that in mind, understand that this book challenges facets of that tradition.If you are not comfortable with that, this book is not for you.

That said, I find it engaging and well-written.I cannot speak to the validity of Reiki's history; therefore, I cannot judge the accuracy of this work.It is compelling and carries with it a sense of honor and respect for the Usui tradition, despite its deviations.This book could appeal to someone beginning Reiki, but it is more likely to address questions and curiosities of a seasoned practitioner, as well as pique established methodologies.

Reiki: The True Story---my favorite Reiki book
I like this book a great deal because Mr. Beckett displays that refreshing (and rare) combination of breadth of knowledge and humility.The book's perspective is strikingly balanced in many ways.For example, there is an equal combination of the history and theory of Reiki with many practical techniques--some traditional, some his own.Because of the thorough research Mr. Beckett has done, the reader will gain some interesting insights into the early days of Reiki as well as how this teaching has evolved over the years, mostly through written records and the voices of Usui Sensei's students.Also, while the author makes it plain that he comes from a traditional Usui Reiki background,the book doesn't privilege any one perspective and diminish others.Rather, it introduces alternative perspectives and allows the reader to make up his or her mind on the matter.Beckett has a knack for knowing what to delve into deeply, what merely to touch upon, and what not to bother with so that one is never overwhelmed or bored.In addition to the author's humble and hopeful tone,he also appears to have a profound respect for Reiki that pervades the book.Let's face it--there are now so many horrid "learn Reiki quick!" books and DVD's out on the market that seem neither to know much about the subject at hand nor to have any especial dedication to the original spiritual principles of the art that Beckett's book is quite a welcome relief, and, may I say, long overdue.Importantly, the author reaffirms that Reiki is primarily a personal spiritual connection with our Source, which is what it always should have been.The diagrams and pictures are clear and easy to learn from.Anyone can read this book with profit, from first degree through third, but it might be overwhelming for a first degree newbie, and the knowledge it contains of second and third degrees might muck things up a bit before they're ready.Enjoy!

This book is part of the campaign of falsification of the history of Reiki. It incorporates the themes already used in the West to create a false mythology, to get rid of the true school of traditional Japan. I could have written this
This book resonated with everything I've ever known.It was so good I felt I could have written it myself.It is so sensible ,hopeful and simple that it was a joy to read.I would recommend it to all energy workers and the general public.

One of the best Reiki books I have come across
It is not often that I write any sort of a book review, and it is not often that I come across a Reiki book that I want to say complimentary things about, since most Reiki books in print are fairly dreary and lacking in content, I find.

But "Reiki, the true story" by Don Beckett does not fall into this category and is one of the few Reiki books that I can wholeheartedly recommend. This is a hefty book, running to over 200 pages, and is very pleasing to the eye. But what is important is its content, and there is much to commend.

Don has brought together from various Japanese sources a detailed and fascinating description of the story of Reiki: its origins and its practices at different times during Usui Sensei's life, and its journey to the West. It is easy to read, comprehensive, and brings out the similarities and agreements between the different sources of information, as well as the contradictions and the mysteries, things that confront anyone trying to get to grips with what Usui's original system was all about.

This is more than a history book, though. Don examines in detail the original practices of Usui Sensei's system, as described by the different sources, showing what was practised at the different training levels, and offers personal insights and suggestions for experimentation and further practice.

I found that I could not put this book down, and I believe that this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who wants to discover what Reiki was all about, as a reference work and as a practical workbook.

This is a book filled with knowledge and insight written with care and respect for others.

Definitely a must-have for each Reiki Practitioner
While many different books already contain translations of Hayashi's Ryoho Shishin (treatment methods guidebook), this is a great resource that goes above and beyond the others. Co-written by two wonderful authors and teachers, Frank Arjava Petter and Yamaguchi Tadao, this manual contains much historical information and historic photos of Hayashi-sensei and other teachers in his lineage.

Yamaguchi-san's family has practiced Reiki in Japan since learning it directly from Hayashi himself, and much insight is given on the historical development of Reiki within Japan. There are copies of original documents in Hayashi's handwriting, and a complete translation of his manual.

Unlike other translations of Hayashi's Ryoho shishin, this edition contains full-colour photographs to illustrate all of the hand positions and Reiki techniques such as ketsueki kokan ho (blood exchange method; a means of improving circulation both on an energetic and physical level) and a technique for reviving unconscious clients.

This is a richly illustrated text that each Reiki practitioner will value for the number of reccomended treatments for dozens of ailments. It is a quick and to-the-point guidebook that really works.

A VERY Important Contribution to Usui Reiki Community
Master Petter has done it again. Given us a succinct manual that touches onhistory, techniques and a plethora of important detailed photographs to aid us in our practice.

I recommend this book along with his Usui Manual, The Spirit of Reiki, The Japanese Art of Reiki and Quantum Touch as the most important books any Reiki Practitioner/Master Teachers should have.

(I mention the Quantum Touch as it adds an added connection that really gives a boosted connection to Reiki healing)

I am a new Reiki Master/T myself however I realise this is a continuous journey of BEing Reiki.

Meditation for finding enter Peace and Healing
I love this CD, I wish I had found this one earlyer this year. I am healing from breast cancer and one of the treatments that have been used on me is "Reiki". I have to say that before cancer I knew nothing about "Reiki". But being the kind of person I am, this year 2009 I've read almost every book or listen to as many cd's I could get my hands on to help me to understand the practice better. I so wished I had found this one first. I feel it is the very best CD to use when you are trying to learn the practice of energy healing. I've even given a copy to a family member, they also enjoy listening to it. For anyone out there who enjoy the practice of "Reiki" I highly recommend this CD.

I was getting stressed out thinking I got suckered in on the set of CDs.

One must be on a real mental trip (POT or LSD) to embrace this presentation of utter nonsense and storytelling.
Her readings come across as if they were intended for children.

If you like to hear Japanese short stories and you want to enhance your psychedelic experience, buy it.

She puts emphasis on releasing anger but I could not bring myself to destroying the CDs.I believe the best way to release my anger is to send this CD back to Amazon.

As a student of the International House of Reiki, I was delighted to be asked to review Bronwen Stiene's CD, `Reiki Meditations for Self-Healing'. There is beauty in the simplicity of traditional Japanese Reiki, but despite its simplicity, there are subtleties within the system that can be confusing for practitioners new to the Japanese way of thinking. Bronwen Stiene masterfully explains the intricacies of the Japanese perspective to Reiki practitioners and non-practitioners alike through explanations, meditations and parables that get to the essence of this self-empowering practice.

The CD set is divided into two sessions. Session One is devoted to learning about and experiencing Reiki's energy through working with the three diamonds. The listener follows as Bronwen explores the three energies of Earth, Heaven and Heart and their relationship to the body's internal energy centers, or haras. Through meditations, the listener feels what each energy is like, and learns how the benefits of each meditation cross over into daily life. An explanation and practice of Hatsurei-Ho is also included. Hatsurei-Ho is a technique that helps the practitioner build the flow of energy in order to become more balanced and supports the practice of hands-on healing.Bronwen adds to the listener's foundation by including details about the purpose for body posture and hand positions, as well as the importance of ritual in preparation for practice and setting intent. These details help practitioners eliminate distraction and learn to develop strong practice habits.

Session Two explains the five elements that make up the system of Reiki. Having gained a solid understanding of how the energy works through practice, listeners are introduced to the Reiki precepts or guidelines for living, hand positions for healing, techniques for further development, mantras and symbols (also known as training wheels for Reiki) and the reiju, or spiritual blessing. This CD set is invaluable to Reiki practitioners of all backgrounds in its support of their practice, as well as to non-practitioners looking to find tangible ways to create positive change in their lives. I got Bronwen's CD! Fantastic! Flawless! I am not exaggerating; the sound is so neat and very high quality, plus the content amazing. There are two CDs (lasting more than an hour each) which together present traditional Japanese techniques and meditations while beautifully laying out the foundations and the 5 elements of the original system of Reiki.

Well I am just excited about having it. It will be an excellent tool for my classes and my own practice in California.

Excellent Reiki book
I highly recommend this book Practical Reiki. I am a Reiki Master Teacher and have beenusing Reiki for a little over 10 years. Although I have a many books on Reiki as well as Reiki manuals, I would definitely use this book as a teaching tool along with my other course material. It is very simple and would not intimidate a new student who has no knowledge of Reiki or energy work. The illustrations are also wonderful.

Practical Reiki by Richard Ellis is a work that lives up to it's name!As a Reiki Master/Teacher for Maine's foremost teaching hospital, students find this book easy to grasp, delightfully readable yet comprehensive and packed with wonderful graphics and photographs. I think it is a great handbook
As a student Reiki, I was referred to this book. As a now Reiki Master, I recommend it to students, or anyone wishing to understand this great Universal Healing Energy that we all have. It has short chapters, that are in depth, with illustrations. It is not the end of all of Reiki knowledge, but Richard Ellis has packed as much as he should have into this easily transportable book. Amazing!
Before finding Steve I was a Reiki II Practitioner and spent $300 on that training.I was seriously considering paying the $500 to become a Reiki Master when I came upon Steve's DVD's on netflix.I am now a Reiki Master through Steve's Reiki Master DVD and have recently begun teaching Reiki Classes.It's been one of the most amazing experiences of my life.I have a master's degree in education and am a former schoolteacher and absolutely LOVE Steve's work and his simple, straightforward presentation style.My students love his books and the Dvd's provide excellent reinforcement in the classes I teach.As we move into the 21st Century I believe it's crucial to spread this work as far and as wide and as QUICKLY as we can. It's a shame if this amazing healing technique has been kept from anyone because of the cost of classes.Raising the consciousness of this planet should be everyone's priority and learning Reiki is one way we can effect a massive shift for many.My blessings go out to Steve for being a true maverick in this field and letting spirit lead him.

Excellent step by step guide!!
Since my first attunement many years ago, I have been looking for answers about reiki. Even after becoming a reiki master, the questions remained. Either due to secrecy, or they themselves just didn't know. Since I was a young boy I have always wanted to know more about becoming a healer. It seemed with every turn came a hefty price or a brick wall. How does one explain a healing procedure, when your not sure of the answers yourself. It was like having an owners manual with most of the pages missing. Needless to say my reiki practice was limited to animals and close associates. Hey...at least the animals didn't ask questions. lol. After hearing about Steve Murrays Ultimate guides and dvd's, I was skeptical. I did research and found all the wonderful things that was said about him and his reiki guides. My instincts kept telling me to go for it. To take a chance. So, in a bold endeavor for answers, I purchased all 5 volumes of Steve Murrays reiki guides. Plus, his book Reiki False Beliefs Exposed. His 1st, 2nd, and master reiki attunement dvds. Psychic and chakra attunement dvds. And his Animal Psychic Communications book. I'm here to tell you, it was one of the best investments I have ever made!! From the time I opened the first Ultimate guide. Answers came faster than I could have ever imagined. Through the straight forward and concise information in these materials, I have a renewed confidence. With the first book, I have learned more in one sitting than I had in several years of questioning. With his psychic, healing, and chakra attunements, I have actually seen profound results in a short amount of time. Steve Murrays Reiki False Beliefs Exposed was very in depth. Really cleared the air on the reality of reiki. As for his Animal Psychic Communications book. It has helped tremendously between myself and my horses, and pets. A special thank you goes to Steve Murray for his outstanding work.

Steve's 4th book in the Ultimate guides series was good .I like the fact that he does not try to force his views or beliefs on anyone. He says take what you want from the book and anything your uncomfortable with leave behind. I am a born again Christian who's Lord & Saviour is Jesus Christ.I appreciate the fact that I can practice reiki as a Christain and Steve made me feel comfortable doing it. His books and DVD's have great information for anyone seeking to use reiki healing whether Christian or non-Christian. The attunement DVD's are wonderful and really work.

Reiki for Everyone
I am working on my master's in mental health counseling. I will be using methods like meditation and Reiki in my practice. In the past people marketed Transcendental Meditation (TM) to make large sums of money. The concept of meditation was good but using it to bilk large sums of money from others was just wrong. Reiki is at a crossroads. People must decide if it is to be used just as a money making scheme or for the betterment of mankind. The concept of Reiki works. It has helped many people. But like TM some see Reiki as a way to make large sums of money off others. Steve Murray has taken Reiki and made it available to everyone at a fair price. His books and tapes work. Bravo Steve!

Great Program
I became a 2nd level Reiki healer about 11 years ago and never got sick until I quit practicing a few years ago. Recently I was diagnosed with a health issue so I decided to be in control of my own health again and restarted to practice Reiki.

Among a few Reiki books that I purchased lately, Mr. Murray's book really surprised me because it was full of "technical" information but so easy to understand. I then purchased more of his books, DVDs and CD. I was skeptical about the DVD attunement but it works well for me. I'm using it almost every other day and can feel my Reiki energy flows stronger than before. I'm grateful for these programs and now a Reiki Master certified through his program.

Great Reference Book

I love Amy Z. Rowland's Books, Especially this One
I have read every one of Amy's books, except for the one that just came out.This is the best of those I've read so far.Really touches upon being intuitively guided during your Reiki practice.She is also a great and very deep story-teller.Very spiritually uplifting read for me.

a very benaficial point of veiw
I wasn't sure what to expect from Amy since I had not heard of her work nor was I familiar with her writings, but half way into the book I relized just how dedicated and affluent she is in Reiki. I have incorperated many of her teachings into my format and I would love to attend one of her classes.You won't be sorry when you add this instructional and inspirational writing to your library. At one point I could "here" her writing, soft and comforting.

Inspiration and enrichment added to one's reiki practice
Intuitive Reiki for Our Times inspired me so much that I traveled to Pennsylvania to participate in Amy Rowland's Intuitive Reiki class, which afforded me an opportunity to not only get to know Amy Rowland, but to meet other wonderful Reiki practitioners.The author is a beautiful person with whom to work.Her writing style is straightforward and easy to understand.I am a reiki master and have read many books on reiki and truly find Amy Rowland's style and set up easy to reference, when you want to find a certain topic. The inclusion of Japanese techniques enriched my knowledge of reiki.The photos helped to clarify the explanations given in the book.The final chapter of conversations with certain reiki masters was interesting because I have read work by some of those profiled and it helped me to know those people better.I highly recommend this book to other reiki practitioners.

A Beautiful Presentation of the Art
This is a beautiful book just to page through. It displays the various techniques one can use to get results for using the universal life energy available to us all to speed healing for the body or the mind. Like most books on the subject, it does not display the symbols used by Reiki Masters, as they are considered too sacred to share with anyone not considered as serious students of the healing art. But the techniques are there for anyone to benefit by. The only problem I noticed is that because of the beautiful colors and background photos on each page, it is not always easy to read the text on some of the darker pages.

Insightful, though in need of an updated edition
William Lee Rand is my teacher's teacher, and I enjoy that he seeks to provide up-to-date and original Reiki information relevent to our current state as a planet. Much of the information contained in this work is useful, in the form of short vignettes, which makes it an easy read.

There are numerous pointers available for all practitioners of Reiki. Some of the information provided in a historical context could use an update, and the terminology needs a little correction. Despite this, it is still a pretty basic book that anyone may find benefit in.

This book could have used a sharper eye for editing, for there are numerous errors. Much of it is simple, though it does get a little distracting at times. Avid readers of Reiki News Magazine may recognize many chapters as articles that appeared in said publication.

Possibilities and a Bright Future
William Lee Rand opens the way to exploring an exceptional world where balance and wellness unfold and we undertake the mission of healing our hearts and spirits. Rand shares a unique view of Reiki in this context andoffers food for thought along the way.

Illustrations may be startling, but info is crystal clear
I've read a number of books on Reiki, and I happen to like this one very much for a number of reasons. It gets right to the point - with the exception of the symbols, which it does not show out of respect, the books goes into great detail on the hows and whys of attunements, treatments and optional extras such as crystal work, pendulums etc. Compared to may other books, it is also relatively short with summaries, so you can quickly review information later.

As for the illustrations: I don't know why others in their reviews missed this, but the author was *NOT* suggesting people practice Reiki in the buff. The author goes into a lot of wonderfully detailed suggestions as to hand positioning for SPECIFIC health conditions - which is one of the reasons you should pick it up. I also think, as an artist, it was meant to show a spiritual/energetic connection. Still, I think it's a book meant for practitioners only, not to explain to your clients.

Not everything you read here will agree with what you've learned before - every teacher adds their own touch, has their own preferred method. But you may learn a few new things here that you'll take with you!

there are better ones...
I was disturbed by the nudity in the book. I can see some sexuality in the drawings. The art is somewhat amateur in the sense that the illustrator tries to draw it in a realistic manner but cannot accomplish at times especially with the male nude.
The information is dated. A lot is not about reiki, unless you want to learn about the combination of other usages, so the title of the book should have been different.
It is not completely crap but I don't think I would recommend it.

Excellent book!
Excellent book - and only for people who have gotten out of their body shame and can face nature the way it is!

Another manual...
A consice and clear guideline on Reiki and its applications. There are at this moment over 50 books on the market on this subject.Walter Lubeck is just one amongst many Reiki practitioners, therefore it is not surprising to find different opinions as to the best method/technique.With such diversity of opinions, it follows that there is no "complete" handbook.The author has skipped over historial background, the use of symbolism, and has diverted into divination with the use of the pendulum.The best way to go is to follow the advice of your Master or anyone who is well into this subject, before picking your choice.

The Complete Reiki Handbook
I practice Reiki regularly and will soon recieve my Reiki 2 attunements. I have purchased several excellent books about Reiki as I have prepared for this attunement. This book is NOT one of them. Itwas disturbing to open the book and discover that all of the illustrations depict people in thenude. The author explains this with a statement that this was done to"convey the feeling of intimacy. freedom and love which is the veryessence of Reiki". Reiki is a wonderful gift and provides a sense ofwell being to the reciever. I would RUN if anyone wanted to give me Reikiin the nude. The act of touching someone in the act of healing requiresabsolute respect for the other person's body and feelings. The"intimacy" suggested in this book does not feel right to me. Inconsistent with some misinformation
I would like to preface this review by highlighting that this book really encompasses much of the system of Reiki in its infancy after Takata's passing. The author did personally meet with Takata-sensei, and there is a wonderful retelling of the myth of Usui-sensei's discovery of Reiki. although it perpetuates the historical inaccuracies, it helps awaken the reader to the essence of Reiki as a system of personal growth and healing.

These points aside, I would not consider this required reading for most Reiki practitioners. It is one of the earlier books published, so it is great for historical value. Still, some factors detract from its helpfulness. The largest and most distracting error countenanced by the writing is the inclusion of the Chinese characters for the equivalent of "rei" and "ki." The author misrepresents them as the Japanese meaning Reiki, where in fact it is modern Chinese for "ling qi." The energy of the kanji themselves is important to describing the qualities of the system of Reiki, but the "ling qi" characters do not convey this.

Also, much of the end of the book is a sales pitch for taking your classes with the author for rather high prices as you ascend through the levels of the system. I personally would not feel comfortable taking a class from someone who didn't recognise that her characters were not the right ones for the very name of the system.

I do have mixed feelings about this work. It has been rereleased in a newer and expanded format for its twentieth anniversary, and it may be worthwhile to leaf through this version to see if it has any corrections and some other great information.

I love this book.It is full of great information including illustrations of Reiki hand positions for each ailment, the emotional causes for the ailment, information about which gland or organ may be influencing the problem, along with suggested positive affirmations. An excellent reference book.

What I love most about this book is they amount of information given about each ailment.It is informative - yet not long winded.It provides information about which gland or organ may be influencing the problem, suggested emotional causes, and affirmations and suggested hand positions for treatment.Although I use all the hand positions in a full treatment, it is useful to know the individual positions if a quick treatment is all that can be done.

Tails ofa Healer
I stumbled on this title by accident while searching for feral cat information.I decided to buy it and have to say it was by far the best book I have read in a very long time.The stories are truly heartwarming, and it's obvious the author is sharing her personal connections as well.Whether you know anything about Reiki, animal communication or are even an animal lover, this book is definitely one to read, and a keeper!

Repetitive collection of reprinted ARTICLES
This is a collection of previously published ARTICLES (which was NEVER mentioned in the description)! Consequently, MUCH is repeated and the author doesn't go into ANY topic in depth. The "teaching" is not direct just what you may glean from her experiences.If you work with animals,or practice Reiki or Shamanisms, it is more than likely you've already had experiences like the authors (my personal experiences ARE over all more dramatic and interesting as yours are likely to be).I was hoping for something with more depth. I can only imagine that the other reviewers are personal friends of the author since they mention her by name in their reviews.I've only been able to read it about half way through, reading an article now and then when there was nothing else around. It put me to sleep more than once, did not engage me, except to get me to start writing down my own experiences.

A Compliment to my Reiki Journey
I started reading "Tails ofa Healer" while on breaks from the Reiki I class I took with Rose De Dan this past May.I had the chance to read an article of two and decided that I needed to finish the entire book, prompting me to order it from Amazon for my Kindle.Rose writes how she teaches; honestly, warmly, respectfully and with integrity.Many of the insights and stories Rose chooses to share in this book will seem familiar, mostly because all of us, whether we're into Reiki or not, have experienced joy, love and ultimately, loss.However, as a compliment to beginning the journey as a Reiki practitioner, it is without compare.

A healer on many levels
Tails of a Healer is a wonderful collection of anecdotes from the heart.Rose De Dan's vivid descriptions and easy way with words make you think you could sit down for lunch with her.There are many lessons in this book, and some of the chapters I'll read over and over and keep learning something new.We don't just meet dogs and cats, there is an orangutan, some bats, and even a dragonfly introduced.She explains things well, so if you know little or nothing about shamanism you will still enjoy the read, but you'll probably end up wanting to learn more. This book is a small treasure.

Every so often, a book comes our way that we want desperately to share with everyone, to make sure that everyone reads it.This is just such a book.These tales are evocative, joyful, sad, a full range of the emotions we - and our animal friends - experience.A must-read for all shamans, healers, and animal lovers!De Dan, with her beautiful prose, takes into the heart of what she does as a healer, and shows us how we too may be healers.
My own quick story to share- my puppy will chew pretty much anything in sight.I had left the book on the end table near the couch, and rather than chew it all up, the puppy gently took it in his mouth, and once he'd brought it down to the floor, proceeded to lick it.It's as though he knew that inside were wonderful tales of creatures just like him, creatures who needed love and healing.
