Product Description

This excellent textbook offers a unique take on relativity theory, setting it in its historical context. Ideal for those interested in relativity and the history of physics, the book contains a complete account of special relativity that begins with the historical analysis of the reasons that led to a change in our view of space and time. Its aim is to foster a deep understanding of relativistic spacetime and its consequences for Dynamics.

Product Description

After a century of successes, physicists still feel the need to probe the limits of the validity of theories based on special relativity. Canonical approaches to quantum gravity, non-commutative geometry, string theory and unification scenarios predict tiny violations of Lorentz invariance at high energies.

The present book, based on a recent seminar devoted to such frontier problems, contains reviews of the foundations of special relativity and the implications of Poincaré invariance as well as comprehensive accounts of experimental results and proposed tests.

The book addresses, besides researchers in the field, everyone interested in the conceptual and empirical foundations of our knowledge about space, time and matter.

Product Description
It is now nearly a century since special relativityreconciled seventeenth century dynamics and nineteenth centuryelectromagnetism, yet physics students are almost invariablyintroduced to the subject as "MODERN PHYSICS" - and something of amystery. This book, instead, treats special relativity as a usefulbranch ofphysics rather thanas an astounding novelty. The emphasisis on its dynamical consequences, its effect on quantum mechanics(with all that this implies for chemistry and biology), the newinsights that it provides in electromagnetism and its utility inproblems such as calculating radiation from fast-moving chargedparticles. To avoid giving the impression that relativity somehoweliminates the distinction between time and space, 4-vector notationis not used until the latter part of the book. Since all theconsequences of relativity arise from the Lorentztransformation, moreth an usual care is taken to show how it arises from simple notionsaboutthe uniformity o f space and time, and the absence of anyuniversal reference system atabsolute rest. R ecent studies indynamics stress the critical difference between linearity andnonlinearity and so there is a proof that the transformation must belinear, something ignored by almost every other book on the subject. ... Product Description
That space and time should be integrated into a single entity, spacetime, is the insight of the special theory of relativity, which leads us to regard spacetime as one of the fundamental categories in terms of which we make sense of the world around us. However, it is not the only one - causality is equally important, and at least as the special theory is concerned, not to be subsumed under a fundamentally geometrical form of explanation. The agent of propagation of causal influence is electromagnetic radiation. The light-cone is fundamental to the topology of spacetime. The authors find support for a rationalist approach to physics, rejecting a simple empiricist or positivist view of science. ... Read more

Product Description
This book discusses in detail the mathematical aspects and physical applications of a new geometrical structure of space-time. It is based on a generalization ("deformation") of the usual Minkowski space, supposedly endowed with a metric whose coefficients depend on the energy. Energy and Geometry: Geometrical Description of Interactions is suitable for researchers, academics and students in mathematical and theoretical physics. ... Read more

Product Description
This book extends Special Relativity to include (Superluminal) transformations to reference frames moving at relative velocities greater than the speed of light. Within this framework tachyons of any spin can be defined and second quantized. Tachyons are shown to exist within Black Holes. Further considerations lead to the ElectroWeak Theory for one generation of leptons and quarks. Thus the general form of ElectroWeak theory, including a rationale for the form of parity violation, SU(2) x U(1), and left-handed doublets and right-handed singlets, is derived. Quark confinement is also shown to be necessary. A thorough study is made of tachyon quantization. Free tachyons are shown to violate parity and CPT invariance. ... Read more

Product Description
This is an original, provocative study of the foundations of Special Relativity. It is unique in the fact that it is the first book that examines the basic perceptions that resulted in the formation of Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity and of Maxwell's Electromagnetic Theory of Light. It contains a detailed discussion, in a careful, scientific manner, of each of the principles involved, in a form that is easily understood by persons with no scientific training and only high school mathematics. The information is presented in an easily followed format in which the most important experimental evidence is presented as it was originally conceived, obtained and analyzed. Each experiment is then critically reviewed, in order to reveal any possible questionable areas, and corrected. The result is a more logical interpretation and understanding of the natural physical laws that, in turn, remove the unnatural limits that have restricted scientific progress to date. ... Read more

Product Description
The aim of the book is to provide a clear, concise and self-contained discussion of both the structure of the theory of special relativity and its physical content. The point of view is that of a practising physicist who uses relativity daily: relativity is a branch of physics and is regarded as being neither mathematics nor philosophy.Particular care has been taken to elucidate those difficulties, conceptual rather than mathematical, which invariably snare the unwary or inexperienced. The material is liberally illustrated with real examples and problems drawn from both high energy physics and from astrophysics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Neat and Enjoyable Little Book
This book approaches SR by way of linear transformations between vector spaces. The usual Lorentz transformations are derived as a'consequence' of the underlying mathematical structure. The book goes on to consider tensor product spaces, finishing with a simple look at Maxwell's Equations in tensor form. Although the physics content is fairly limited, I enjoyed the approach and the book is very clearly written , fun to work through and suitable for independent study. ... Read more
