2-0 out of 5 stars a start, but with some big mistakes
I got this book along with many others in order to learn more about my renal disease.I read this one first, and was impressed by the clarity of the explanations. However, after reading more about renal diets I became aware that the nutritional information given in the book for specific foods was grossly incorrect.

I DO NOT reccommend using this book as a guide to meal planning and preparation. It is far too basic, leaves out too many foods, and furthermore it gives dangerously incorrect content levels of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus for specific foods.Upon reading other renal diet books it is clear that the levels of some foods are 3 to 4 times higher than stated in this book. Please be careful with your health and double check.

Try the online publication found here: publications.gc.ca.Search for H58-28-1999E

Also, this book is very misleading, in that it refuses to allow for vegetarian or low meat-protein diets. Many studies have been done thatshow that vegetarian diets are FINE for those with renal disease.Again, double check for the sake of your health.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought....
I thought I was getting a bigger more informative book for the price I paid for a used in new condition book. I paid 49.95 plus shipping. You could get this advice from a renal nutritionist. I would not have paid this price had I known what is in it .

5-0 out of 5 stars disease kidney
I want to finethe treatment for disease kidney for old man with the disease liver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for nutrition of kidney patients
I think the contents of this book are beneficial as like as medical treatment for kidney patients. To cope with kidney failure, this book will provide kidney patients a powerful weapon called nutrition. In addition togeneral diet guide, this book suggests some methods to cook for kidneypatients, which are really interesting and various. Kidney patients canchoose the best menus they like in the situation of kidney failure.Especially, if you are kidney patients under dialysis, I strongly recommendthis book because nutrition is really important for you. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money
If you are a renal patient, don't get this book. You'll be dissapointed. It is really a workbook for patients to use with a dietician, to help the dietician map out their patients needs. It's not something to use on your own. It doesn't give any of the values you need to know in regards to potassium, phosphorus, sodium and protein levels etc., and the list of foods given is very limited.

If you are looking for diet guidelines and explainations in every day language, go to [...] the National Kidney Foundation site for much more helpful information. Also, the USDA nutritional database has a wealth of nutritional info in table format, ALL the stuff you need in a nutritional list. They even have a whole database in excel format you can download and manipulate for you own use, all for free.

I bought this book along with the dieticians renal guide in hopes of understanding more about what I need to do diet wise and got little help. This is best used when you see your dietician and for the cost, only if your dietician requests you to get it.

8/25/06 Recently I found software is available that will track all this for me. I purchased Diet Pro, which was easy to customize to my needs. It uses the same nutrition tables the dieticians use (USDA)and has made my life much easier! It will take food amounts by weight or volume and show you your daily nutrition intake. I can also put in recipes and get a nutrional breakdown per serving, and save the recipes in a file. I no longer spend hours calculating my daily nutrition. There are other programs out there too. Diet Pro was the least expensive. ... Read more

Product Description
Obesity is closely associated with other diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, and cancers. Natural flavonoids are promising dietary supplements for weight loss and treatment of obesity-related diseases, as they have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anticancer activities. These products are beneficial for weight loss and healing diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and renal diseases. They can decrease blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular risks in overweight men and postmenopausal women. Certain processing methods and the combination with other interventions can make them more effective. Most of the flavonoids are extracted from natural herbs. It is necessary to know which parts to use and how to process these herbal products to have the best effects for the purposes of weight loss and healing relevant diseases. Certain combination of bioactive components, and certain diet patterns can have continued effects on weight loss.

Excerpts:

“… are known to be beneficial for healing diabetes in some animal models of obesity and metabolic syndrome…. These results show that … contents may help relieve the severity of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and renal diseases.”

“… are known to alleviate arterial stiffness, an indicator of cardiovascular risks. … central arterial stiffness was remarkably reduced. In addition, systolic blood pressure was also decreased. … These results suggest that oral supplement of … may help decrease blood pressure and central arterial stiffness, and thus reduce cardiovascular risks.”

“Diets with the … also decreased the levels of serum triglyceride and cholesterol. However, such diets increased the concentration of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, which is beneficial to health. These results suggest that the extracts of … may have an anti-obesity effect. These extracts can reverse the effects of high-fat diets, and regulate the body weight, adipose tissue weight, and serum lipid contents.”

“Pancreatic lipase activity plays an important role in obesity. Studies have shown that oral administration of … can inhibit the absorption of excessive lipid into the body, and reduce the triglyceride (TG) level in plasma. In addition, … can suppress the adipocyte differentiation in a dose dependent manner.… These … have been found to be more effective in inhibiting lipid absorption and differentiation of adipocytes, compared with the effects of their glycosides.”

“… can increase the fat-free mass (FFM) and muscle mass index in obese postmenopausal women…. compared to … alone, the combination of … may lead to significant improvements in body composition parameters. Such combination can help reduce risks of cardiovascular disease in obese postmenopausal women.”

“… is one of the most abundant flavonoids. …It has been produced as a dietary supplement. … It has anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory effects. Activators of … targeting certain tissues have been considered potential treatments for obesity and obesity-related type 2 diabetes. 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book
I gave it as a gift to someone whose husband was beginning dialysis. She reported back that it was very informative and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
My father is on a new renal diet. He just started going to dialysis three times a week. This book helped us cope with the sudden demands of a renal diet and really helped calm our fears. Cooking for a dialysis patient isn't nearly as complicated and daunting as we thought. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars absolute must have
My husband began dialysis over a year ago and it's been a constant search to find useful information--finally found it. This book is an absolute essential tool for those who are serious about dealing with their problem. It is not to be confused with a cookbook but is a wealth of information on almost all foods. Not much missing. Worth it's weight in gold to us. As a side note--the staff at his center were unaware of it and are now looking in to purchasing a number of them!!!

Product Description
The Simplified Handbook for Living with Heart Disease and Other Chronic Diseases is a gift of life to every man and woman living with heart disease. Written by a Warren Selkow, who survived two open-heart surgeries, and Donna Selkow, his wife caregiver, this book is meant to inspire and educate people dealing with heart disease. In a blunt but honest way, the book covers heart disease from initial diagnoses, surgery when required, post-diagnosis lifestyle changes, and moving on with life. This is not a medical textbook. It is a handbook written for patients and caregivers in plain, simple English. Having been reviewed, approved and endorsed by over a dozen physicians and other medical professionals, The Simplified Handbook is a resource people can trust. Nothing is held back for readers seeking information about living with heart disease or post surgical survival with keys to living healthy and productive lives. This book is a must read for people who have been diagnosed with heart disease, told they need open heart surgery, or have had open heart surgery. It is also a great resource for caregivers, family members, or others that want to learn how to live with heart disease.NOTE: Anyone expecting to be coddled should not read this book, because the Selkow’s deliver it straight and tough. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Your health is your #1 priority.
Read and learn. Mr. and Mrs. Selkow are great teachers and put taking care of yourself in simple, easy to understand language.

Mr. Selkow is a late learner. Too bad he was forced by a heart attack to instantly change his whole lifestyle. Don't let this happen to you. Learn from Mr. Selkow now. There is no time to develop good health habits like the present, to be healthy in the future.

The idea of invincibility, and, it will never happen to me, is a myth.
It not only happens to you, but to your wife and family, as they watch you change over night from robust to puny.

I bought several books to give as gifts to friends and family who need a wake up call. They have thanked me and are making changes in their lives based on this, tell it like it is, book.

Your job is not your life. If you are not healthy and can not take care of yourself, you can't be all you can be. You can be only a shadow of what you could have been.

I recommend you buy this book and learn from Mr. and Mrs. Selkow's experiences. You don't have to put your own hand in the fire to get burned and not do it again, Mr. Selkow already did it for you with his Simplified Handbook. Learn from him and Mrs. Selkow.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had known---
I wish I had this book when my Mother was suffering with heart disease and eventually her heart surgery. The disease took her life several years ago. This book would have helped my Aunt and myself tremendously during our caregiving times.
My family has a history of heart disease and I am even having to take measures right now due to blood results I have been receiving.
Thank you Mr and Mrs Selkow so much for writing this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Simplified Handbook for Living with Heart Disease and Other Chronic Diseases by Warren and Donna Selkow is a must-read...
Warren and Donna Selkow find themselves in a unique position to address and write about theproblems of living with coronary artery disease. In October of 2000 Warren had a "mild" heart attack. The event (the word used by the medical establishment) revealed a very serious underlying condition, a failing aortic valve. Subsequent testing revealed four completely blocked veins, a failing mitral valve and a large aneurism on the aorta. He was scheduled for open-heart surgery to repair all the damage that included a four-way by-pass, a new mitral ring and replacement of his aortic valve with a mechanical devise.

By the end of 2001 Warren found himself in seriously declining health and another test revealed he had a leak in his heart and a mitral valve on the verge of complete failure due to the leak. In January of 2002 he had that valve replaced and a pacemaker implanted.

Donna Selkow was called upon to provide the day-to-day care to ensure Warren's survival. Donna already had extensive experience in caregiving to seriously ill people that literally started when she was a child and she looked after her grandmother. Donna became educated about heart disease and with this education and her already well developed sense of what good care means, nursed her husband through the worst of the times which did not end with just the simple healing of the surgeries. No, her care would be required for the following many years.

Warren was a business executive in the sales and marketing area of Information Technology. During his career he was employed by National Cash Register, Honeywell, IBM and Siebel Systems. He was employed by Siebel Systems when the heart attack and ensuing surgery disabled him and ended his working days.

Donna was a stay-at-home mom who raised their children (as Warren says, "almost single-handedly) due to his travel schedule).

The Selkow's now reside in the Phoenix area and are completely retired. They have two grown children and two grandchildren, both now in their teens.

The Simplified Handbook for Living with Heart Disease and Other Chronic Diseases by Warren and Donna Selkow is a must-read for those living with heart disease, diabetes, COPD, or renal failure. A survivor of two open-heart surgeries, and his caregiver wife, offer a straightforward first person guide that will save lives. Readers will discover comprehensive physician-reviewed, approved and endorsed information about the various tests leading to a diagnosis, specifics about open-heart surgery and making it through Intensive Care. Sections include preparing for surgery and recovery, diet, medications and exercise, the emotional side effects of depression, anxiety, and stress, and living a life of fitness and productivity. Based on the personal experiences of patient and caregiver, information is delivered with humor and in-your-face honesty. From the first diagnosis of heart disease to living a long and healthy post-surgical life, this book delivers at all levels.[...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you should know about coronary artery disease
This well researched publication covers everything yor Medicare Doctor did not have time to explain to you.The book is fast moving and very easy to read, unlike most medical articles. It tells you what to expect before and immediately after surgery. The section on living with coronary heart disease will shock you into successfully modifying your life style which will likely enable you to extend yout lifetime. The caregiver suggestions are invaluable.I must warn you it is blunt, but great!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Simplified Handbook could save your life
If you want the truth about living with heart disease, The Simplified Handbook for Living with Heart Disease is written for you. This book could be called "What the Cardiologist Doesn't Tell You." You'll learn more from the Selkows than a 100 doctors. It could save your life. The summaries at the end--Caregiver Basics, the Rules of Acceptance, Perseverance Dictums, and glossary written in layman's terms--are worth the price.

The book has it all: Scientific medical facts, jokes, poems, tips on healthy living, philosophies, and survival strategies. The text boils down to three words: Diet, exercise and medications. The bonus for the book is the insightful comments by author Warren Selkow's wife Donna, the caregiver. Her insights are extraordinarily honest and helpful, especially on preparing for surgery and the post-operative depression. Read, laugh, learn, and buy this book for those who may not have a clue about the consequences of living with heart disease.
