5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the Renal RD
I have found this book to be the best resource so far for creative ideas to motivate dialysis patients.I take basic ideas from this book and embellish them with my own creative juices. My patients and the staff think I'm a little bit crazy but we're having a great deal of fun and most importantly, I'm seeing excellent results in my clinic.

I began at my clinic with less than 30% of my patients with albumins greater than or equal to 3.8%.Within 3 months, that number has increased to 60% and continues to grow. This tells me that not only did my patients learn something, they've been able to integrate their learning into every day life.

My results have gotten the attention of my regional manager who has asked me to speak at a regional meeting about what I've been doing.Even my local kidney foundation has asked to write a story about me for their upcoming newsletter.I attribute much of my success in this clinic to the ideas I've gotten from this book.

You can also buy an accompanying CD to print out color educational puzzles (crossword, word find, word scrambles, tic-tac-toe, etc.).I usually photocopy these if I'm using them for patients. In their printed color format, I have cut them up to use on educational bulletin boards and on an educational game board.

I can't say enough about this wonderful resource, only that I wish there were more like it!A definite must-have for every renal dietitian. An excellent investment in your career!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information For the Patient and Caregiver as well
This book is not an "easyread" because it's really meant to be read by medical professionals, but it's chock full of extremely valuable information and explanations. When a doctor tells a CKD patient to cut back on sodium, potassium, protein, and so forth the explanation of why, what's happening, what effect will the present unchecked diet have is often very vague.I am a care giver in that I do the cooking for a CKD patient. To understand the function (or lack of function) of a failing kidney, and to understand why these things become important, is important to me.So while I skipped most of the chemistry, I got some very valuable information and was able to ask more informed questions at the next nephrologist's visit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a general nutrition book.
This highly technical medical text provides an outstanding explanation of the nutritional needs of patients with renal disease. The chapter on calcium and phosphorus homeostasis is particularly well written.Because the writers assume the reader has a fundamental understanding of physiology and pathology of the kidney, this book is has limited usefulness for the casual reader. It is most valuable for medical professionals treating patients with renal disease or the medical student who hopes to get maximum benefit from a nephrology rotation. ... Product Description
Abstract:Hemodialysis (HD) patients exhibit poor functional capacity and reduced quality of life as a result of the complications associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). A review of the literature indicates that regular physical activity can reduce the complications associated with ESRD by inducing adaptations in the cardiovascular, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems. In turn, this increases functional capacity and enhances quality of life in patients on HD. Hemodialysis patients can safely participate in a variety of exercise programs with minimal adverse effects. Intradialytic exercise programs that can incorporate aerobic and resistance exercise promote exercise adherence and should be encouraged on dialysis units. ... Read more
