5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text on Green Treefrogs
Green Treefrogs are probably the most readily available and frequently kept treefrogs on the planet today, and this book does a superior job of detailing their needs and requirements in the captive environment. The photographs illuminate visually what the text is driving at, so you get a good idea all-around of what these frogs are and how to care for them in the home terrarium. It's hard to believe that the author packed such a quantity of solid information into a 64 page book, but he did; this is the highest quality text on Green Treefrogs available on the market today. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars There are better amphibian books than this one...
I was very impressed with Coborn's book on the White's Tree Frog so I looked forward to getting this book, which promised to be a *comprehensive* book about frogs commonly seen in the pet trade for hobbiests.I was very disappointed. It has some nice pictures in it but the setups and care info is starting to be outdated. It is generally about some of the frogs commonly seen in the pet trade, but it is far from comprehensive. In fact, some of the most COMMON amphibs aren't even given much more than a mention, let alone any information about their "proper care."

If you are thinking about getting a frog, or want a book to give to your 10 year old who is a budding frog expert, then this is a book which might satisfy your needs.Otherwise, there are MUCH better books than this one about frogs.Don't be fooled into buying it just because it is inexpensive either.Other books may cost more money, but they will be worth every penny you didn't spend on this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Corn Snake Fanciers
The photographs are breathtaking; so much so that you want to see more. It's concise and intelligently written. This book should be in every corn snake fancier's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still an excellent primer on corn snake genetics
So many new corn snake color morphs have been developed since this book was first published that its coverage of the morphs that existed at the time seems a bit dated. Nevertheless, this book is still of considerable use to corn snake breeders, as well as anyone else interested in breeding for recessive traits, for its clear explanation of Mendelian rules of inheritance. Novice corn snake keepers ask too often the question of what you get when you breed this kind of corn snake with that kind; after reading this book, they'll be able to figure it out for themselves.

Readers interested in descriptions of the latest corn snake morphs, and how they're made, should consult The Corn Snake Manual by Bill and Kathy Love.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
Although somewhat small in size and length (especially at a first glance), this book is packed with great, surplus info about every factor that makes up corn snakes and their appearance. It first gives a short explanation ofwhat a corn snake is and details about the general species, and then goesstraight into what makes up and causes corn snakes' coloring and markings. This book explains all types of corn snake morphs, phases, mutations, changes, and more about how different-looking kinds of these snakes surfaceand how they occur. It even explains breeding techniques and possibilitiesfor breeding such different phases, morphs, and mutations. This bookdoesn't provide much general info on the species, such as captive care, soI thus recommend it for people who already know the general care andmaintenance of these snakes.Therefor, it's best for those who areinterested in collecting and even breeding these colorful kinds andvarieties of snakes, as it explains much of that subject. So altogether, Ibelieve this book is one of the best for explaining it's subject clearlyand thoroughly, and there aren't many books that could have explained itbetter. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Seems uninformed about its own subject matter
It's hard to say whether this book merely reflects the state of knowledge about the care of garter snakes in captivity at that time it was published (1992) or whether the author simply didn't know his subject matter. Perhaps a little of both.

Like several other authors, Sweeney makes the mistake of associating vitamin B1 deficiencies with frozen fish -- in fact, only some fish contain the thiaminase enzyme that causes it, and they do so whether they're alive or frozen. But he also makes several other mistakes about certain species. For example, he says that Butler's garter snakes have a wide diet in the wild (no) and are picky feeders in captivity (not in my experience!), and that western ribbon snakes include earthworms in their diet (they don't). Nor is any mention made of the cannibalistic tendencies of the western terrestrial garter snake, an omission that could lead to a big surprise for keepers who house a pair together!

There is surprisingly little information here on garter snake care per se; too much space is given to talking about snakes as a whole, or to listing and describing the many different species and subspecies (taxonomy's out of date too). In general, this book is too imprecise to be of much value; don't bother tracking it down even if you are a die-hard garter snake enthusiast. ... Read more

It is geared more toward the amateur herper although I an sure that all experienced herpers will enjoy reading this book. An absolute must for amateur herpers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another note from the author
Regarding the reviewer below---I see one of my creationist "friends" has decided to pay a visit.

I didn't do any of the reviews here.I don't have to.I have my own author section right thereat the bottom.Even lists my professional credentials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of interesting information here...
Lenny Flank writes great books on snakes and lizards. This one contains so much information it's almost like an encyclopodia--except that it's fun to read.A definite must for all devotees.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The book is not a complete waste of time to read, *but* it is a complete waste of your money (perhaps check it out from your local library...).

The author is not a professional and doesn't possess anyformal or academic background in the field; he is a hobbyist. This is allwell and good, but if I want precise information on how to properly carefor my snake, it certainly wouldn't be from another hobbyist.

Overall, the book does provide decent supplemental information from anotherhobbyist, but it is certainly not up to being one's primary or sole sourceof information to caring for your snake. In this respect, it is whollylacking.

If the reader is seeking expert, *qualified* information (and ifyou genuinely care about your snake), he or she certainly will not find itin this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great guide to caring for box turtles!
I've worked with turtles, especially box turtles, for many years and have often found myself frustrated and the lack of information, or worse yet plain wrong information, in print and on the internet.I've seen many turtles suffer in their care and health because of this.Thankfully, Tess Cook's new "Box Turtles" offers box turtle keepers -- both new and experienced -- an outstanding guide and reference to their care. The book is thoroughly scientifically-based but is written in a manner that is easily accessible to even the most novice keepers. The full-color photographs and illustrations throughout are a boon to her explanations and care suggestions.I highly recommend this book for anyone who cares for these creatures or anyone who is thinking about it.Cook makes it clear that proper care can provide a great life for a box turtle, but the depth and complexity of this care isn't for anyone looking for an "easy" pet or purchasing an animal on a whim. She does justice to these lovely and often misunderstood reptiles, which is no small compliment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for new boxie owners!
I bought this book right after aquiring my turtles. What an informative book! I refer to this like a pet care manual. It sits on my nightstand for both pleasure reading and for admiring the photos. I even plan to leave it for my pet sitter as a reference while I'm gone. Thank you Tess for all you have done for box turtle lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must-have reference for anyone interested in Box Turtles
Tess Cook's new book is over 125 impressive pages of detailed information and professional photos on everything anyone could ever need to know about Box Turtles and their care. The book is absolutely fantastic! Cook covers all the bases from acquiring, housing (indoors and out), feeding (live food too), breeding, egg hatching (you must see the egg-laying and hatchling photos!), and all things in between. No topic has been missed or glossed over. Tess Cook's long history of keeping and raising turtles shines in this work as she includes little known facts and lessons that can only be learned through personal hands on experience. Tess Cook has also maintained a turtle care website for many years offering help, advise, and a forum for all interested to share their experiences. I have most books and encyclopedias written referencing Box Turtles and enthusiastically recommend this book as a must own book. It is a complete how-to guide encompassing all issues of concern for anyone, at any level of experience, interested in Box Turtles. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a complete guide to "Everything You Will Ever Want to Know about Owning and Caring for a Leopard Gecko Lizard".

What makes the leopard gecko such a sought after pet?

The leopard gecko (scientifically classified as Eublepharis macularius) has become popular in the United States and in many parts of the world because of the wide availability of colors and the ease at which even first-time owners can take care of these reptiles.

Leopard geckos are fairly smaller than their other gecko relatives. Their size is one of their most endearing traits. One can easily hold an adult leopard gecko in one hand without running the risk of dropping and injuring the reptile. They also have great dispositions and are well-suited to life in captivity.

However, there is one big difference when it comes to leopard geckos: they do not climb walls like other larger geckos. Despite their inability to climb vertical surfaces, you will be pleased to know that they can explore their immediate surroundings as thoroughly as a wild ferret. Rocks, small shrubs – all these are fair game for an inquisitive leopard gecko.

What makes a leopard gecko a worthy companion? Just look at its general lifespan. A leopard gecko can live up to twenty years in captivity! And that’s without extreme care since leopard geckos are naturally hardy and resilient little creatures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough book!
When I bought my baby veiled chameleon I pretty much scoured the internet for info (a lot of which made me very paranoid about its care) so I purchased this book to see if the same info was published. This book is well-written, complete and I have complete confidence in the writer, who is a very experienced many-species chameleon-owner.Contains info about separate species as well, since each may require different care. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for absolute novices to betta fish care - an inexpensive bare basics start
The coverage for betta specific care is useful, if not super user-friendly. Of all the betta care books, this one is probably the most useful for the novice betta owner.

There is also some information for the intermediate-level owner. Discussions include great definitions on true and mixed colors, types of finnage and layman's discussions on what color and fin traits are dominant.

The disease section is fine, but (like most betta books) relies too heavily on dumping in the medications and antibiotics. It does recommend better prophylactic care - like clean water - and at least recommends trying salt regimes before breaking out the bigger meds. Don't look for any pictures of fish diseases, however - there is just one picture of a female betta with dropsy.

The basic betta care section touches on just that - the bare basics. There is enough information to get started, but not the kind of in-depth pet-owning information I personally would appreciate. I guess that is why this book is in the "Quick and Easy" series.

I would also rather the betta care information be organized better, with bullets and easy-to-find section headings. Maybe this is just being picky.

This is probably the best betta book for beginners, with lots of great photos and a decent amount of care information. It's a very inexpensive book and worth picking up for yourself, or as a thoughtful little betta keeper's gift.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little too basic
Betta Care is a well written book with excellent pictures of "Siamese Fighting Fish."If you have only one source of information at hand, this will serve you well.

Unfortunately, there is another source of information that will serve you well at a much smaller cost - the Internet.Though this book is a handy way to get all the information in one place, you can get the same info (as well as all the good pictures) on many different websites.

My recommendation:If you are the type of person who likes to have the info in black and white in front of them, buy this book.If you're the type of person who spends a lot of time on the web, get the same info for free.

3-0 out of 5 stars Betta Care
The book had a lot more information for breederds than for beginners,
but the information that a beginner could use, was very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's A Life Saver

One of the most reader-friendly and authoritative books of its kind Ive ever read. Not only does this book give a solid outline of the natural history of these snakes, but it also answers (Thoroughly!) all the questions/issues that might arise in the captive care/breeding of the corn and rat snakes.

The author, Phil Purser, is an authority on these snakes whom I once had the honor of meeting at a university lecture; his name on a book about herps is a definite stamp-of-quality.
