More than a Dictionary
This is a wonderful resource for use in an elementary school classroom. I use mine not only for help in writing silly songs or poetry, but find it useful for promoting phonemic awareness instruggling readers. New Way to Play with Rhyming Words
The concept is pretty simple, you make a paragraph or story, around 5 sentences long, using as many words as you can that rhyme. The word pretzel is supposed to have a comical, surprise, thoughtful or insightful twist. There are lots of pages, with lots of space for you to add your pretzel. On each page, the author provides you with lists of words that rhyme to get you started.

It is an interesting concept, and she does say that we have to use our mind actively and be positive in creating these pretzels. Personally I find it pretty intimidating to create my own comical twists. And I think it would have been useful to have bought a rhyming dictionary instead of having them provided in this format.

I think it would be great for people who work with words, or who are witty, or enjoy playing word games and want to try something different.

Difficult to understand
I enjoy books of all sorts, especially puzzle books that I can share with my family and that let us get closer by playing word games and such. I was therefore thrilled to find Dolores Curtis' Rhyming Pretzels: The Word-Play Game with a Comical Twist ([...]). I was expecting a family-fun book that we could all share and take turns with, making up funny anecdotes and whatnot. Instead I found confusing instructions that made no sense to me or my wife. When I showed the book to my older brother who is a student of science and math, he agreed that anyone would need an advanced degree to understand the rules as written. I am still trying to understand how to play, and hopefully will still get some pleasure out of the book, but for now it is taking up space on my shelf while I go back to school to learn how to read instructions.

Just okay
I'm a fan of crossword puzzles, logic puzzles, and word games, so I expected to love Rhyming Pretzels. For some reason, I just couldn't get into it. The author provides you with a list of rhyming words, which you can add to as needed. Then, you use the words to write a short story, hopefully with a comical twist - almost like writing a limerick.I think the book could be a terrific teaching tool for school-age children, but like I said, it didn't grab me.
