3-0 out of 5 stars interesting but no chemistry
the best thing about this story is the peek into the tv business. I don't doubt the author has faced some of the complex politics and back-stabbing in her career as a sitcom writer. The romance, however, reads like a dull sitcom. corny jokes you can't help but laugh at, flawed characters you can't help but like. but i found myself not really caring whether the leads got together or not. more interested in whether they got to write for a good show. maybe i was looking for a bit more fantasy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inside Hollywood
What a funny, little book! The characters are writers for a TV Sitcom, "Life with Lucky", and the story is about their bizarre, dysfunctional behavior. They vie for position, spread gossip and rumors about each other, "do lunch" at all times of the day, endlessly rewrite scripts, redecorate their offices, go to parties, and seem to spend very little time actually writing.

Emmaline is the newest writer on the show, and she is assigned to work and share an office with Bud, and guess what? They hit it off, start sleeping together, and actually WRITE together!

Bloomberg's writing style is uncluttered and spare, irreverent but effective. The chapter titles are amusing, such as Chapter 32 "The earth moved, and now I can't find a thing." The chapters are short and brisk, and the voice alternates between Emmaline and Bud. Girl meets boy, girl sleeps with boy, girl falls in love with boy...all in 230 pages; hey, I just got it the book is a sitcom!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Hollywood Romance Really Rocks
This is a great weekend read! I couldn't put it down. I was very investedin the characters, and couldn't wait to see what Hollywood served up forthem with each new chapter. The chapter titles were, by the way, Hilarious! It also served to demystify and unglamorize Hollywood. I found thecharacters very easy to relate to, and that surprised me. They had normalreactions to bizarre situations. Previously, Star magazine provided myinsider view, now I know the real deal. Beverly Bloomberg is quite atalent! Everyone should read her book especially if you're a bigtime movieproducer!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Player" meets "Beggers And Choosers" -- great novel!
Veteran television writer Beverly Bloomberg's The Last Hollywood Romanceis an original and witty satire of television sitcoms. This irreverentstory of love and showbiz features producers, writers and stars all seekingto out-manipulate one another. the banter is political incorrect, thelanguage earthy, the intrigue and hypocrisy pervasive, all reflecting theHollywood reality as can only be told by a true insider. If you liketelevision series like "Beggars And Choosers", or Hollywood filmslike "The Player", you will love reading Beverly Bloomberg'snovel, The Last Hollywood Romance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A funny book from a Hollywood insider
What fun to get a satirical glimpse into Hollywood sit com writersÕlives. The Last Hollywood Romance also perceptively takes on gender viewpoint bydevoting alternate chapters to lst person accounts from the two maincharacters:Eager newcomer Emmaline and calloused comedy writer Bud. Dancing around these two, are desperate co-writers, manical tv tycoons, anda particularly loveable, albeit frenzied, sycophant. I recommend The LastHollywood Romance to anyone who is curious about the lives of the Hollywoodplayers, and the hilarious dynamics of male/female communication. ... Read more

Product Description

Reading the Adolescent Romance provides an exhaustive study of the developments in young adult literature since the 1980s with a focus on Francine Pascal’s "Sweet Valley High" series, which has become a cultural and literary touchstone for both fans and critics of the novels. Pattee carefully examines the series’ content, structure, and readers, allowing her to investigate an influential marketing and literary phenomenon and to interrogate the intersecting influences of history, audience positioning, and readability that allowed "Sweet Valley" and other teen series to flourish.

This book demonstrates that, as a series of generic romance novels, "Sweet Valley High" exhibits tropes associated with both adolescent and adult romance and, as a product of the early 1980s, has and continues to espouse the conservative romantic ideologies associated with the time period. While erstwhile readers of the series recall the novels with pleasure, re-readers of Pascal’s novels — who remember reading the series as young people and have re-visted the books as adults — are more critical. Interestingly, both populations continue to value "Sweet Valley High" as an identity touchstone.

Amy Pattee is an associate professor of library and information science at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. There, she teaches children’s and young adult literature in both the library school and in a dual degree program affiliated with Simmons College’s Center for the Study of Children’s Literature.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is a classic, but seriously outdated
I bought this book to give me some additional tips on making my romances salable. While there is some good advice on treating your writing seriously and on naming characters, most of the book is outdated. It applies to the 80's "boddice-ripper" romances in which the heroines were dominated by the hero and often coerced into having sex. Modern publishers generally won't look at books like that now, so why learn how to write them?

Also, more depth is allowed in heroines today. She says that heroines should be 'spunky', but she makes it sound as if they have to be optimistic about everything that happens to them and that they shouldn't have fears. There is some truth to this, but I think it's absurd to think that the heroine should never have negative emotions because those often drive us into making choices that we wouldn't otherwise make.

So, I recommend it just as a classic reference showing how romance has evolved over time, but I wouldn't buy this book if you are trying to break into today's romance market! ... Read more

In this engrossing, humorous, but deceptively important novel, the psychiatrist-author takes on the subject of romance in its many forms: falling in love, the beauty of the world, memory, and the creative impulse for good and evil. The main character, a successful and bored romance writer, is suddenly thrust into an emotional tailspin which leads to adventures worthy of Don Quixote and a dramatic and satisfying conclusion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Heart of the Manner
Romance of Romance by Heather Folsom is an intricately crafted novel written wit precision and attention to detail. If you want life to be comfortable, remain status quo and be safe, this is not a book for you. Even though it is an engaging, hypnotic novel filled with fascinating bizarre characters, it is profoundly about love and life and how in committing to either, there is not place to go but to vulnerability, honesty and integrity. However the ride there and for ever after, brings you to unbound emotion, self doubt and flight of fantasy. You must take the risk and be filled with the courage to be yourself. I loved the book and know I could read it several times and still find bottomless fascination and intrigue. You and a friend could read the book and in the follow-up discussion no one could be sure that you had read the same book. For a journey to passion, to soul and to self-a must read. Love can be a crazy thing. "Romance of Romance" is a dark comedy following Syns as she labors in a mental institution filled with unstable hermaphrodites and other unruly characters. Product Description
You are transported back to a time and place that is recognizable, l970, West Germany, an American GI, a Jewish-German girl with an illness are about to meet. It is a romance story that will be read and reread continuesously. The author says, “It is memories fashioned with fiction about a real time, place:--it was all I had to work with…” adding, “…it was me working uphill all the time with this story…never again.”Yet the genius in this story is the author’s ability to express what is on his mind.

In the beginning of the story life seems tranquil, uneventful at first, yet the romance about to take place will be strikingly dramatic for the couple, with the maneuvering of timethis story has the ingredients of being the most beautiful representation of life and death andhow two people impose their will upon it and grab the moment.

Three elements seem to linger like a canopy within the shadows of the story, an illness, Vietnam, and the relationship. The characters Chick Evens and Chris Trawets in their phraseology resides nothing imitative; the dialogue is expressive. The pedigree between both individuals is quite different; yet heartwarming, still heartbreaking.

This was a great story. It's set up like a soap opera. Many twists and even more turns and surprises. If you like a great saga/soap opera you'll love this. And even if you don't, you just might get hooked. The character's reach they're lowest as well as they're highes in this story, they have relationships that interweave and tangle. It's a dance, a never ending dancing cycle. You start reading and you're in a whole other world that will shock, surprise, instill fear, and make you laugh and cry. It's grea andI loved it.
I hope all of you do as well. It's a story unlike any other, your not to meant to expect what they say you're supposed to. It' not like the fluffy harlequins or silhouettes, it's way more.
Enjoy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Majestic Destiny!!
With a name like Majestic, what's a girl to do but to dream big dreams and have itchy feet? With a name like Majestic, how can you NOT want to be a star or want the world as your oyster? With a name like Majestic, how can you not love with your whole heart and soul?Majestic was those things and more. And she was only fourteen. How can a fourteen year old girl, fresh from the county, impact so many lives in so many ways?Well, I guess you'll have to read the book to find out. This book had so many plot twists and turns, it had you barely hanging on the edge of your seat.Like Betty Davis once said, "you better strap yourself in...it's going to be a bumpy ride!"

Majestic Secret is about a young lady, a child really, who wants to grow up too fast and learn too much too soon. When she runs away from home to follow a man she thought she was in love with, a white man at that, she soon finds that it is not him her heart has been searching for, but his son. From the minute they set eyes on each other, theirs lives are changed forever. However, Eljen has no idea how young Majectic really is, especially after she lies and claims to be older. With a beautiful face and bangin' body, he never stops to consider that her story has more holes in it than a piece of swiss cheese. However, in an effort to save Eljen from himself, she ends up telling the ultimate lie that tears them apart.Majestic may have been out of Eljen's life, but never his mind or his heart. They had been each other's destiny. He learns this to be true when Majestic's Secret is finally revealed.

Along the way there are colorful characters like Jimmy Smith, Majorie, Mary and Judith, all with secrets of their own.

Michell McGriff has written an outstanding novel with many well thought out, richly developed characters. This read will hold your attention from the first page to the end.I literally did not want it to end. There are some wonderful jaw-dropping surpises and zingers too!! Thankfully, there is a follow up to this book called "Rested Memories."I look forward to finding out what happens to all of the characters I came to love, hate, laugh and cry with!Michelle, you have one hell of a book here!Keep up the good work. This is a book I HIGHLY recommend to anyone to read, whether you like romance, mystery or just an all around GOOD book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ok...so I'm hooked now
I'm so bad, I read the online version of this book while at work. During breaks and lunch, etc. It was great. It's written like a soap opera and I just loved it. You love the people, you hate the people. Jimmy, Eljen and all the rest are just so captivating. So many twists and turns I never wanted it to end. I cried and laughed. I really enjoyed the way the writer transitioned from the 50's up to the now. It was neat watching them grow as people. My friends and I talk about the characters like they are real. I can't wait to finish the new book. I think it's going to be a tear jerker, it's heading that way. Like I didn't cry enough reading Majestic Secret. But I got some good laughs too. Like I said, the whole ride. This book gave me the whole ride!

5-0 out of 5 stars See what I mean
I just knew the writer could do better. I read the original version of this story and it was good, but this is fantastic. So much richer and fuller. I'm hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Will Always Love You- Simply A Beautiful Story
Annette Evans takes you on a journey of the heart in her book "I Will Always Love You".Melissa has been shaped by her perception of the place she occupies within her family structure, which has left her feeling undeserving. As Melissa starts to experience life as her own person during a trip to Germany she meets a man named Stefan that will ultimately challenge her character, her self-esteem, and her personal strength, as well as change her life forever.Annette uses a brilliant form of dialogue to tell the story of Melissa's heart, engaging the reader from the very first page.I found myself unable to put the book down because I needed to know what happened next.I marveled at how much one decision could impact a life and how fear and uncertainty could interfere with love.As Melissa works through her emotions fate steps in and leads her down some difficult roads.Only to find out that her life experiences were able to teach her things she otherwise might not have recognized about herself, her family, and life in general.Melissa gains strength as a person and is able to admit her mistakes and rebuild herself, stronger, better, and much more confident then she imagined she could be.Stefan lives life only to find out that some things are not always as they seem to be.Annette builds two characters that have no other option then to learn to really love and to follow the heart.Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read.

Book Two of the Courage, Love and the Meaning of Christmas trilogy. Book one (Courage, Love and the Meaning of Christmas) revealed the meaning of life through an engaging story full of adventure and romance. Book two poses and answers the question of whether people can really change inside, whether the deepest wounds can ever heal, whether life can rise above the mediocre, and whether impossible dreams can come true. This year, it's Ski's turn for a miracle. But when the miracle comes, will he accept it? Can he grasp the truth while there's still time? And what about Spencer? When the truth comes knocking, will he pay attention? Many dreams came true for him over the past year, but that doesn't mean they can't fall apart. The story picks up a year after book one, but it doesn't start out the way you probably expected. Much has changed over the last year, but nearly as much as is about to! You'll never guess the plot twists that will keep you glued to the pages until you finish. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better?
I think I like this sequel to Courage, Love & The Meaning of Christmas even better than the first one, which was great. This one has even more fun dialog, especially with Ski, who is kind of a jerk and kind of a crack up. I think the character development moves along really well and some really incredible changes come off as highly plausible.

A few plot elements were easy enough to guess, but they were fun to read anyway, and there were plenty of things that I didn't see coming, even though I made it a game to try to guess.

I had a few favorite parts, where the book really made me feel A. Creeped out! B. Made me laugh a few times. C. Okay, I admit it, I cried once. and D. One part was really sad! I don't know why that was a favorite. I guess because of it being strong writing and I couldn't help but get into it.

Read the first book first, though, or you won't know what's going on. ... Read more
