Product Description
Wayne Riley must overcome the haunting failures of his cursed family. His great-grandfather and Civil War veteran lost a chance to play major league baseball when he broke his leg in a saloon brawl. His uncle lasted exactly sixty-nine days with the Boston Red Sox. His father was kicked out of West Point for cheating and was killed by his wife in a murder-suicide for his adultery. Wayne is groomed by his beloved grandfather to atone for the family’s honor, to go to West Point, play football and become a general. He makes a good start. He becomes the leading rusher in Army football history and leads a helicopter squadron in Vietnam. But then the high promise of youth becomes unraveled. He is seriously wounded in Vietnam, eroding his confidence and diminishing the possibility that he could return to football as an alternative career. He marries badly and suffers a traumatic divorce, which includes his wife’s adultery and a public accusation that he is a homosexual. He gets back with his first love, Lynn Black, a graduate of New York Law School who is elected to Congress. But then her breast cancer is discovered just as she is wrestling with the possible impeachment of President Nixon as a member of the House Judiciary Committee. The novel portrays the great social changes of the time, particularly the changed role of women. Wayne’s body heals slowly and he begins the painful and difficult comeback to play professional football after he quits the Army in frustration. He plays a major role in the Super Bowl for the Washington Redskins as the game against the Kansas City Chiefs moves to overtime and the sun sets over Miami’s ancient Orange Bowl. ... Read more

I laughed.
I cried.
The story stuck with me and made me think.I, like Spencer, thought about the meaning of life.As I read this thoughts and the characters wriggled their way into my heart. After I finished, I found these thoughts had blossomed and I will be better for having read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book!
I really loved this book.I read it in two nights -- practically couldn't put it down.Roundy is a pro in this genre. He really captures the heart of interpersonal interactions and relationships, and mixes in the right amount of suspense and adventure. And he takes a much needed and profound look at the real meaning and purpose of life.An excellent read!(And I'm excited that this story about Spencer is a trilogy!)

5-0 out of 5 stars I totally love this book!
In so many ways. The story is interesting and moving, the writing is vivid, the characters are well defined, I learned a lot about the meaning of life, but mostly, it was really fun to read. I rarely read the same thing twice, but this once I certainly will. ... Read more

Echoes of Silence juxtaposes the innocence of childhood against the backdrop of bigotry and prejudice prevalent during World War II. It provides a unique perspective into the lives of three families who endured those years and who were shaped by the events of this period in U.S. history. This novel also illustrates the complex choices we all make without considering the effect on future generations. The choices, made years earlier by the adult characters of this story, create echoes that reverberate forward into the lives of their children, which change and shape all of them in unexpected ways. ... I was very disappointed in this book, whose reputation has apparently been exaggerated. It was minimal information at best--nothing I couldn't have gotten from the FAQs section of the Harlequin website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romance Writer's Pink Pages : The Insider's Guide to Getting
Romance Writer's Pink Pages : The Insider's Guide to Getting Your Romance Novel Published (1996/97) is an excellent reference for the fledgling romance writer, a 'must have.'The Pink Pages gives the guidelines andcriteria of what the romance publishers are looking for in a manuscript, aswell as names and addresses of publishers, for everything from novels toshort stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resources, some drawbacks
This book has a lot of good points - writer's tip sheets, suggestions, markets that not everyone has heard of.

However, there are some drawbacks. The most notable comes from the sheer volitility of thepublishing market - editors rotate, move around, leave jobs, etc. Andwriters, using a contact name several months or years old will look foolishto the people they are trying to impress with their proffesionalism. Theother drawback I found was in incorrect information. For example, they listpresident names of RWA chapters. Only the person they listed as my chapterpresident hadn't been president for more than three years. In another spot, they list a phone number for a publisher. I called to have a tip sheet sentto me. Only, it was an incorrect number.

I felt the drawbacks, though, were merely inherent in the style of book. I would, therefore, stillrecommend it to a writer trying to break into the market. ... Read more

Product Description
Working for Vogue, Amy spends her days dressing waif models in London's latest apparel while fending off insults from the Gucci-garbed staff. Hardly the glamorous job she hoped it would be. But that won't stop her from fantasizing about the jet-set life she knows she's destined for--or the prince who's bound to redeem her from a less than glowing record in romance.

However, beneath her dreamy exterior, Amy has a sure streak of common sense. So when the impossible happens--and her path crosses that of London's hottest film star--she swoons with longing, expecting nothing in return. But Orlando Rock has other ideas. For Amy is just the kind of girl he's after--smart and witty, with a penchant for quoting from the classics, different from the daft supermodels and vain leading ladies he's dated before. Or is she? For with fame, fortune, and true love just around the corner, Amy's head is spinning, her jet-fueled imagination poised for takeoff. Is her love for Orlando stronger than her lust for the limelight--or is she merely fated to be the paparazzi's latest prey . . .?

Hip and hilarious, this enchanting, sizzlingly sexy tale of a winsome twenty-something caught between romance and reality will have you rooting her on through each outrageous mishap and daring plunge toward love. . . .

2-0 out of 5 stars Secondary Characters more interesting
The problem with many chicklit heroines is that in the need to make these characters light and entertaining, authors have made them a little too one-dimensional. The girls often come out as pre-pubescent girls who never grow up. The hero deserved better and so did the reader. The most interesting characters were the secondary characters, especially Lucinda. She is the only reason this book rated two stars Lastly the writing style was--for lack of a better term--weird. Reading it was a chore. I felt like a middle school teacher grading a less than mediocre paper. Save your money and don't even borrow it.

2-0 out of 5 stars really?
I got "The Goddess Rules" on an audiobook and just loved it. . . it was funny and romantic. Unfortunately, this book isn't nearly as good.I had no sympathy or empathy for the main character and there were no real plot twists except for the protagonist's deficient character.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pass this one up...
There is much better stuff to read - heck even better chick lit out there! This was not even mildly amusing and the protagonist is downright annoying. With the volume of books in this genre, it won't be difficult to find something more interesting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chick-lit can be better than this.
This book is very bad.My opinion is not a matter of taste; the book has nothing to offer. If you have read this book and liked it.Please try Marian Keyes and Lisa Jewell.Their books are much better.Lisa Jewell especially creates great characters.

I believe chick-lit is composed of 3 main elements: heroine, romance, humor.

Heroine:The heroine in this book is very obnoxious. She is completely self-absorbed.Supposedly, Amy turns around, but the author provides no evidence to that fact.Below is a quote to support my argument.
"Yes, there was no knocking her confidence tonight. In the wake of the Hello! Fiasco, she'd learned that she was not a hallowed babe. She would never be.Elegant? Yes.Well dressed? Yes.Lithe? Yes.She could think of a million adjectives but babe wasn't one...So long, babe.Hello, Amy, she thought, winking in the mirror at herself."
Elegant, well dressed, and lithe is all we learn about Amy.Maybe the author is attempting to create a confident female character in contrast to all the neurotic characters in most chick-lit in an effort at post-post-feminism.However, the character is just boring.

Romance:The book contains very little romance.A few, vividly described sexy scenes, but no swoony, touching, or exciting romantic moments.

Humor:The book is not funny. The author relies on describing situations where the characters think something is funny. These descriptions do the reader no good, especially since you won't even like the main characters.

Chick-lit can be better than this.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Little Ridiculous
This book tends to take the most simple sentence and turn it into a long, winded embellishment that sometimes makes the story hard to follow. The actual plot of the story is ok, a little ridiculous and outlandish, but entertaining.

Amy has a crush on THE most beautiful and popular movie star of the day and it just so happens they meet through mutual friends, become involved and fall madly in love. The ups and downs along with the story are of course paparazzi and an infamous sex tape scandal from a previous relationship. It's all a little little too cliché and expected, but does the trick entertainment-wise.

5-0 out of 5 stars self-made man

I ordered this book for a couple of reasons. I saw it on Soldiers' Angels and I support the troops. I thought the title was very unusual and I couldn't help but notice the blonde on the cover and the motorcycle dude and paratroopers definitely got my attention.

I have never given a review of a book before, but I decided to this time because I find myself thinking about that story. Usually when I am finished with a book, I don't think too much more about it, but this book was different. I find myself thinking about it a lot and the message that it sends to young people and really adults, too.

I had planned on giving the book as a Christmas gift to my 17-year-old daughter. She reads constantly and since this was a book about teenagers, I thought she would like it.

When the book arrived, I opened the box and thumbed through it just to make sure it was a book I wanted to give to my daughter. I read a couple of paragraphs and wanted to read more. As I flipped through it, I stopped on page 219 when I read "He's cocky. He has no discipline. He's a showboat, just like his old man. He'll never amount to anything." That really got my attention.

Since I had some time to kill because my appointment was rescheduled, I sat at my desk and started reading. One of the things that was so great about this book was that there is no fluff. No boring unnecessary paragraphs describing some flowerpot. It was all story that kept me interested and turning the pages. I hate reading a book that loses my attention by trying to impress me with their vocabulary and writing style. All it does is annoy me and I put the book down.

Another thing I loved about this book was that everything I thought was going to happen, didn't. There was nothing predictable about it. The closer I got to the end when I thought I couldn't be anymore surprised, I was. She left a cliffhanger. That is one of the reasons why I keep thinking about the book. Who did it?

I am a self-made man and I was raised on hard work and discipline and there is no free lunch. That is what this story is about. Another thing that really impressed me was the language. She wrote this book without having to use a bunch of vulgar words and describing a bunch of sex scenes.

I almost feel like I was reading her diary. The emotion seemed so real and I think it is a book that should be in every high school across this country.

It is a story of struggle, survival, and dreams. It's about finding a way when there is no way. The differences between her wealthy and poor grandparents were very real and touching and the impact Pop had on Bonnie.

Jake is a pretty cool guy, but I found myself more interested in Robbie and his relationship with his father. What he did at the end choked me up.

I really hope she writes a sequel. I want to know what happens to these characters down the road.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me laugh and made me cry
I saw the newspaper article and bought this book out of curiosity. I am so glad I did. The book touched me in a special way and I could relate to it with things that happened to me in the past. I wonder how many people can relate to the fact that words truly can make or break.

Other than the title, this is the same book as its holiday edition - "Courage, Love and the Meaning of Christmas" which you can find at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1893594017?ie=UTF8&tag=chriswriti-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1893594017

The original version (titled "Gone but not Forgotten") spent two years in Amazon's top 200 sales rankings, and this major revision is MUCH better with improved characters, pacing, and more of Amy's impressive poetry. I wrote the original in three weeks, and spent a decade revising it.

The most frequent comment I hear from enthusiastic readers is that they stayed up all night reading, repeatedly promising themselves, "Just one more chapter...."

You'll also get a very clear definition of the Meaning of Life as the plot, which will often surprise you, moves along.

Consider picking up The sequel ("The Perfect Gift") because the last chapter makes you want to find out what happens next...as always, it's not what you expected! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take a road trip through Napoleonic France
This book is one of Carola Dunn's best. Unfortunately it is also out of print.Fortunately, Belgrave House has issued an electronic version (available only in the Rocket format here). If you don't want to read electronic books, try your local library.

If you are looking for slightly off-beat romances set in the Regency period, I would recommend this, along with her THE FORTUNE HUNTERS. This book is unusual and off-beat because the heroine is Jewish, and as someone else put it, there are two heroes.[Obviously, only one of them will get the girl, though]. The story is also a road trip through Napoleonic France, even through the three - the heroine and the two men accompanying her - are all British subjects. If that were not unusual enough, there is a real adventure based on military necessity thrown into the plot.

You might argue that it is impossible for British subjects to be traipsing through France at this time, and that it is impossible for a book to have two heroes. To the first, I can only suggest that you read this book which makes the case believably that a well-educated and multilingual Jewish heroine can pass as Swiss French.[I won't tell you what identities are adopted by her two companions].As for the second, well, if the heroine and the reader herself are undecided between two men who are equally charming, what should we call it?

A more conventional synopsis of the start of this book follows.
Miss Miriam Jacobson, the heroine, is Jewish and the daughter of a wealthy merchant. She is about to become betrothed to a rabbi-in-training, whom she has never met.She ends up rejecting him as physically unappealing, and goes off to Europe with her uncle, a physician of some note and much skill. We meet Miss Jacobson and her devoted maid Hannah some nine years later, when she is shabbily dressed, in want of money, and desperate to get back home. The problem is that war has been going on for someime, and she is now trapped by the turn of events in a continent overrun by French troops from the Baltic to the Adriatic. How is Miriam to get home? She turns to young co-religionist Jakob Rothschild to help her.In return for his aid, he demands that she travel to Spain on a dangerous but necessary mission to save her country. Her companions are two men, neither of whom wants her along, and who despise and distrust each other. Will the journey succeed, and how? Will Miriam get along with the two men?

One of the two men is Jewish, the other is an English aristocrat who despises Jews and who is rather too proud of his country's heritage.Miriam finds herself attracted to the English aristocrat, despite all his flaws and the fact that a marriage between them would be impossible.

The story is deftly told, with respect for the Jewish religion, a smooth interweaving of actual historical events (including the
rise of the Rothschilds), and with a convincing ending. I have read many Regency romances, but this is only the second
romance that has religion (and social prejudice against Jews) specifically invoked as a plot premise. The other - The Star
Sapphire - also featured a Jewish heroine. One of the best parts of this story was the respect and affection that Miriam had
for her maid Hannah, and vice versa.

A quick historical note: The Rothschilds did start up their famous network by having a different son in a different country.
Jakob or James did establish himself in Paris and Nathan in London, at this time. Wellington did pay his army with gold
provided by the Rothschilds. And during this period, at least one British peer married the Christian daughter of a Jewish banker and his Gentile/ Christian wife.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story, unusual plot.
If you like road trip romances, love triangles (one heroine facing two suitors), a bit of adventure, and an unusual theme, try this book.Heroine Miriam Jacobson is Jewish but a British subject. She is asked by a Rothschild in Paris to help two fellow Britons out with a dangerous but patriotic attempt to get gold to Wellington's armies in Spain.During the trip, Miriam learns more about herself and the two men who soon begin vying for her attention.

This is a rare Regency with a Jewish heroine. Others in this genre are Star Sapphire by Rebecca Danton (Fawcett 1979), although the heroine of that book marries a Gentile (a marquess) at the beginning, and the recently published A Question of Honor by Nita Abrams.Carola Dunn treats the situation of Jews in British society and on the continent with sensitivity, and her heroine (and one of the suitors who is Jewish) act in consistency with their upbringing.

Miss Jacobsen's Journey, long out-of-print, is now available as an e-book (published from Belgrave House).Get it here or look for it at your public library. If you liked this book, you might want to try Bk 2 (His Lordship's Reward) or Bk 3 (The Captain's Inheritance) to learn more about Miriam's future life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars From "It Is to Write"
Cry of My Heart is a tender, thoughtful novel of faith and fate, love and loss, and the folly of youth matured by the wisdom of age. Ms. Bischof has crafted a unique story that will have you gritting your teeth on one page and then smiling and shaking your head on the next.

Ms. Bischof transports you--she really transports you--into the thick forests, craggy ravines, and rushing waters of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia through the lives of young Gideon and Lonnie O'Riley. Even if this book didn't have the magnificent cover that it does, by the time you've finished reading the story, this very picture would be firmly implanted in your mind's eye. You'll hear the crunch of autumn leaves underfoot and feel winter's snow soak through your leggin's as the couple strikes out through the wilds in search of a place they can call their own.

Gideon's faltering leadership lays his family bare to the perils of an unforgiving wilderness and the wiles of unscrupulous backwoodsmen, both of whom threaten the couple's relationship and very lives. Saved in the nick of time by the elderly Jebediah and Elsie Bennett, who take them in to help with the upkeep of their farm, Gideon and Lonnie learn through experience and example what it means to become a family--yes, the rewards, but especially the cost.

Carefully researched and lovingly portrayed, Cry of My Heart saturates every page with the ambiance of The Blue Ridge mountain culture and personality. Ms. Bischof's vivid descriptions of every aspect of the milieu from the lay of the land to the spread on the kitchen table paints a glorious picture. I mean, how can you read "A plate of pancakes was busy melting a pad of butter....She grabbed a chunk of pork sausage and popped it in her mouth" and not start salivating like the most obedient of Pavlov's dogs?

Finally, consider the title. Cry of My Heart--along with the cover--was what caught my eye and interested me in the story in the first place, but I love its poignancy now even more having read the book. There will indeed be a crying of the heart. You will feel it; you will share it.

Oh, one last thing: prepare to love Lonnie. You really just can't help yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Journey of Unconditional Love
Cry of My Heart captured my attention right from the start as I followed Lonnie's journey of love and forgiveness. Forced into a marriage she did not ask for, she never-the-less took her wedding vows seriously and strove to love her husband through thick and thin. A task which was not easy at times.

This book's setting reminded me of the Christy movies, which I always loved. It also provided detailed description of both Lonnie's and Gideon's emotional battle as they struggled to work through hardship and misunderstandings in order to make their relationship what it should be. Though I felt the plot could be developed a little further in parts, it was interesting, suspenseful and kept me reading to the end. Following Gideon's struggle was a good reminder that true love places others first. The importance of communication in a relationship was also stressed.

This was a story of unconditional love, forgiveness and the importance of honesty. Good job Joanne, I enjoyed my adventure with your characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Love Story
In Cry of My Heart, we are introduced to two wonderful characters: Lonnie Sawyer, who has been emotionally abused by her father, and Gideon O'Riley, a handsome mandolin player who has loved Lonnie from afar since they were small. An unfortunate set of circumstances forces them to marry one another when neither are ready. They have no home, no support from either family and no way to make a living. The tension between them pulls them apart but Lonnie's great love and determination to make her marriage work holds them together. They start on a journey to find a place for themselves and wind up finding so much more as God guides them to exactly where they need to be. A touching love story that highlights the importance of forgiveness and allowing one's partner to grow into the person God means for them to be. Beautlful story, Joanne Bischof!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story about love and forgiveness
Lonnie Sawyer has always dreamed of the perfect wedding, home and family but that is not to be. Forced into a loveless marriage to Gideon O"Riley, by her father, she wonders to herself which could be worse... marrying a man that she does not love or trying to get away from her abusive father.

After living with Gideon's parents, they strike out on their own. They make some poor choices throughout their marriage, but as they mature, they turn back to God. But then past mistakes come back to Gideon's mind and begin to haunt him. Can this marriage survive another downfall?

This is a beautiful story about love and forgiveness. When things go bad it`s easy to turn away from God and lose faith, but, with Lonnie and Gideon, maybe love conquers all.

5-0 out of 5 stars story of love and forgiveness
I could not put this book down...read it in 2 days. Lonnie is forced to marry Gideon, who has wanted her for a long time. Though it was through a lie that they were bound together, she resolves to make the best of her situation as she does not want to become bitter. They start out living with Gideon's parents and siblings, but soon leave because his mother refuses to accept Lonnie. They set out on their own, and I have to say, quite a few times I wanted to reach out and knock some sense into Gideon. It's amazing how involved you can get in fictional characters lives. Meeting Jebediah and Elsie Bennett was the best thing that could happen to them. You'll have to read it yourself if you want to see just how Gideon meets Jebediah...I laughed, I cried, I didn't want the story to end. It's a beautiful story of love and forgiveness. I can't wait for the next book. I won this one in a giveaway...I'll gladly buy her next one. ... Read more
