This review relates to the University of California hardback edition, jointly released in the US and the UK, ISBN 0520060016.

A journey into contemporary life-cycle rituals: weddings, funerals, and death-weddings in Transylvania. Author Kligman spent over a year with Transylvanian peasants, yielding a book "beautifully written and moving," as it examines the contents of contemporary peasant rituals, lore, and oral poetry.

Most importantly, Kligman looks at how these societies use metaphor and symbol within the context of a modern, ever-present, socialistic state, allowing "the villagers to expres emotions and negotiate relations among themselves and the state."

Hardback with a sewn binding in dustjacket. Cloth over boards. Photo plates. 410 pp. 5 Appendices, Glossary, Index. 50 pp of narrative End Notes and an 18 p Bibliography. ... Read more

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts in Romania face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts to Romania? How important is Romania compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts vary from one country of origin to another in Romania? On the supply side, Romania also exports human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts. Which countries receive the most exports from Romania? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts in Romania. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts for those countries serving Romania via exports, or supplying from Romania via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Romania fits into the world market for imported and exported human blood, prepared animal blood, toxins, cultures of micro-organisms, and similar products excluding yeasts. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Romania in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Romania is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Romania compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more

Product Description
Architecturally, Romania was long regarded as one of the most interesting and beautiful countries In Europe. This book documents the systematic destruction of that heritage by the Ceausescu regime, a process of "systematization" intended to destroy the cultural indentity of a nation on a huge scale. The programme, only halted by the regime's downfall at the end of 1989, has meant the almost complete destruction of at least 29 towns, with large-scale demolition underway in another 37. The plan called for rural restructuring involving the razing of more than half Romania's 13,000 villages, and vast areas of Bucharest have been levelled. By the turn of the century the whole nation was to have been housed in towns with virtually nothing remaining from the country's history and its traditional civilization - a social engineering feat never before accomplished in European history. Dinu Giurescu's book records the demolished and threatened buildings - family homes, mansions, churches, civic buildings - and analyzes the phases of the policy of restructuring. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Palace of Culture (Romanian: Palatul Culturii) is an edifice located in Iai, Romania. The building served as Palace of Justice until 1955, when its destination was changed, being assigned to the four museums nowadays united under the name of Moldova National Museum Complex. Also, the building houses the Cultural Heritage Conservation-Restoration Centre, the main branch of the Gheorghe Asachi Iai County Library and hosts various exhibitions and other events. The construction, started in 1906, was partly built on the old ruins of the mediaeval Royal Court of Moldavia (1434), and partly on top of the foundations of the former neoclassical style palace, dated to the time of Prince Alexandru Moruzi, rebuilt by Prince Mihail Sturdza and demolished in 1904. It was from this latter building that the Palace inherited the legend of the 365 rooms, as many as the days within one year. The Romanian architect I.D. Berindei was assigned to plan the building and he designed it in flamboyant neo-Gothic style. During World War I, the construction halted due to the limitation of resources. The monument was inaugurated on 11 October 1925 by King Ferdinand of Romania. The Palace has 298 large rooms with a total area of 36,000 m² (387,500 ft²), 92 windows in the front part of the building and another 36 inside the building. Decoratively, the central hall shows a figurative mosaic including various representations of a gothic bestiary, concentrically arranged: two-headed eagles, dragons, griffons, lions. The hall is superposed by a glass ceiling room, where i...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3797074 ... Read more

Chapters: Lgbt-Related Media in Romania, Lgbt Events in Romania, Gayfest, Gay Film Nights, Switch, Gayone, Inklusiv, Angelicuss, Radio Q, Enola. Excerpt: GayFest is the annual gay pride festival of Bucharest, Romania, which first took place in 2004 and now occurs in May-June of each year, lasting for nearly a week. It is organised by the non-profit organisation ACCEPT, the country's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights organisation. The festival also receives funding from the Romanian Ministry of Health and the National Council for Combating Discrimination, as well as a number of private organisations, such as the Open Society Institute and the British Council in Romania. GayFest features various LGBT cultural events, such as film screenings, art exhibitions, theatre and parties, as well as seminars and debates concerning LGBT social issues; since 2005 the festival has also included a gay pride parade. Current event organizer is Kyle David Kipp. The Romanian gay rights movement began gaining ground in the mid-1990s, after homosexual sex between two consenting adults in private was decriminalised in 1996. In the same year, Romania's first gay rights organisation, ACCEPT, was founded in Bucharest, with two core aims: creating a better society for LGBT people in Romania, and changing negative social attitudes towards LGBT people. In the late 1990s, the LGBT rights movement was mainly concerned with lobbying for the repeal of Article 200, which continued to criminalise public displays and promotion of homosexuality. In this context, the issue of organising a gay pride festival was not viable, particularly considering that public manifestations of homosexuality could have been prosecuted under Section 5 of Article 200, which read: ... Chapters: Cucuteni-Trypillian Culture. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 195. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Cucuteni-Trypillian culture, also known as Cucuteni culture (from Romanian), Trypillian culture (from Ukrainian) or Tripolie culture (from Russian), is a late Neolithic archaeological culture which flourished between ca. 5500 BC and 2750 BC, from the Carpathian Mountains to the Dniester and Dnieper regions in modern-day Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, encompassing an area of more than 35,000 km (13,500 square miles). At its peak the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture built the largest Neolithic settlements in Europe, some of which had populations of up to 15,000 inhabitants. One of the most notable aspects of this culture was that every 60 to 80 years the inhabitants of a settlement would burn their entire village. The reason for the burning of the settlements is a subject of debate among scholars; many of the settlements were reconstructed several times on top of earlier ones, preserving the shape and the orientation of the older buildings. One example of this, at the Poduri, Romania site, revealed a total of thirteen habitation levels that were constructed on top of each other over a period of many years. The culture was initially named after the village of Cucuteni, located in Iai County, Romania, where the first objects associated with it were discovered. Cucuteni is close to the city of Iai, which is one of the centres of culture and higher education in Romania (having the oldest university in the country), including a large academic community. In 1884, one of these Iai scholars, the folklorist and teacher Teodor T. Burada, visited the tell (hill-shaped ruins) located next to the village of Cucuteni. During his visit he unearthed some beautiful pottery and terracotta figu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1586060 ... Read more
