Product Description
Running is one of the world's most widely practiced sports and recreations but until now it has intended to elude serious study outside of the natural sciences. John Bale brings the sport into the realm of the humanities by drawing on sources including literature, poetry, film, art and sculpture as well as statistics and training manuals to highlight the tensions, ambiguities and complexities that lie hidden beneath the commonplace notion of running.
The text explores both local and personal, as well as communal and global aspects of running and its practitioners. It examines the streets, tracks and stadiums where athletes run, the races in which they compete, and the running relationships such as exist between the athlete and the coach, between runners and between the athlete and spectator. It discusses the importance of speed and records, how running has been used to symbolise resistance and transgression, and the extent to which it can be associated with a healthy lifestyle.
Running Cultures provides new ways of seeing a familiar sporting phenomenon. it will appeal to both students and researchers with an interest in running in particular, and sport and leisure cultures more generally. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Running Is For Me send all the right messages
While looking for the book Mysterious Persons In History by Minnesota lawyer Fred Neff at a bookstore, I happened upon Running Is For Me.This is another book by Fred Neff, who is a lawyer from Edina, Minnesota which I thought my niece might enjoy. This book on running sends all the right messages to the reader. It tells the story of a young boy and girl who are friends and practice running together.Their mentors are a grown man and woman. The four share their running adventures together. The theme and composition of this story by author Fred Neff is excellent. Here we see both genders getting along well as equals and sharing experiences as they grow in skill and friendship. It also shows how children and adults from different genders can share fun activities like running together.I really like the interplay between the characters of the story. This same wholesomeness is reminescent of what I have read in other books by attorney Fred Neff of Minnesota. This Minnesota lawyer Fred Neff adds a human touch to his books that shows great sensitivity.Reading many of author Fred Neff's books led me to want to find out more about him.Fred Neff, who is an attorney in Edina, Minnesota has written books that at times have a unique mix of humanism, logic, justice orientation, law, physical culture, philosopy and martial arts. It is true that sometimes an author reveals much about his own background in his writing; author Fred Neff has been a secondary teacher in a public school system in the twin cities of Minnesota and an instructor at a number of colleges such as the University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, Hamline University and Inver Hills College. Later Fred Neff attorney acted as a prosecutor and then a criminal defense counsel. Fred Neff lawyer of Edina, Minnesota has handled discrimination and fraud cases. In addition, Fred Neff was on the board of directors of an insurance company. Edina Minnesota lawyer Fred Neff has experience in criminal and civil litigation. What I read about Fred Neff showed me that the breadth of his experience comes through in the humanism and desire for justice and fair play reflected in his writings.Gender equality and respect for others shines through in Running Is For Me and makes it a book that can be enjoyed by male and female readers. This book by Fred Neff is so good that I plan on buying another copy to give as a gift to my nephew.

5-0 out of 5 stars Platinum Rating for Running Book
In high school and in college I participated in running events.I have continued to run almost daily since graduating from college.Up until recently, neither my boy nor girl showed any interest in sports and refused to take a run with me.While rummaging through some books that were for sale, I happened upon two storybooks for children by Fred Neff. One was the story of a mother and daughter who shared an interest in running and the other is about a girl who takes Karate lessons. The storybook entitled Running Is For Me was intriguing.I bought that book for my children to see if it would make one or both of them willing to try running. They thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.I was delighted when at dinner they discussed taking a run with me.Since then, we take short runs as a family. My children liked the running book so much that I bought a copy of the other storybook called Karate Is For Me by the same writer.Again, they loved the book.I went on to get them other books by Fred Neff such as his Basic Karate Handbook and Lessons From the Japanese Masters. Both my children are now taking karate lessons and are active in other sports.Their involvment in karate has really built their self-confidence.I was able to locate another copy of Karate Is For Me and sent it to my niece as a present. The book similarly led to her involvment in karate as well.I love the story in Running Is For Me and the book's ability to spark children's interest in sports. It gets a platinum rating from me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
The book is very informative for new runners. I wasn't sure what a fartlek and other running terms meant, and this book explains them.It also covers a variety of topics from stretching to training plans for different races.I got the order in about five business days.I am very happy with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Resource!!
I used to run cross country in high school; however, in college, I chose cheerleading over running and began focusing on easier workouts, like the elliptical. Then, I got married and had a baby.During the pregnancy, I gained well over 60 pounds.I started exercising again at the health club, taking classes, etc., but I was not losing the weight! It was very frustrating. Then I got a new job as a teacher and jr. high track coach! The idea of being a track coach who hadn't run since high school was frightening....so, I decided that I needed to get back in the swing of running.I figured that since I had tried to stay active, I could just go out and do it.I was wrong!!I got injured, and was frustrated.I decided to go on-line and see if I could find a book to give me the basics of how to get back into running after taking time off.I didn't want to run competitively, I simply wanted to be able to keep up with my track kids on an easy road run day for supervision purposes. :)

This book was the answer!!It gave me the routine I needed to break back into running (no injuries from this routine!)It was also motivational!!I started waking up before my husband and daughter woke up and went for my run/walk work-out and then I would do the strength routine also provided by this book.I ended up losing all of my baby weight, and I was able to wear out my track kids. This year, I have started entering into races, and I have fallen in love with the sport of running all over again!!I highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to running or returning to running. It is very imformative on how to do it safely, stay motivated, and the benefits of running for your health!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great read :)
I am a new runner who quickly incurred an injury because I went from the couch to "too much too soon". I knew nothing about running except get a new pair of great shoes, and get out there and run!
I WISH I wouldve had the foresight to research running before I started. This book has it all, and it is a really easy read. I couldnt put it down. I believe that this book is one that you hold on to forever and refer to many people.

I highly recommend this book to new and experienced runners :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Most complete running book I've read so far
I've been running for just over a year now (two half marathons and one 5k).A marathon is on the horizon for this year.I've read several running books so far, and this is by far the most worthwhile, well-written, and helpful read of them all!Honestly, I think it would be just as valuable to a man as it is to a woman. My favorite highlight of the book is the succinct, understandable way that it clarifies what exactly running jargon means (fartleks, tempo runs, etc) for us newbies. That said, advanced runners would benefit from this book as well.Fantastic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Book of Running for Women
I gave this book and the Runner's World Book of Women's Running to my daughter for her birthday. This book was quite cheap in comparison to the Runner's World Book but my daughter said it was very good and an excellent resource. She actually read both books within two days of her birthday and says she loves both although both are quite different. She says she will use information and training schedules from both books. She rates this book highly. ... Read more
