5-0 out of 5 stars Kathrine Switzer is my heroine.
The subtitle--"The Road to Sanity and Vanity"--says it all. Switzer (the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967) is a role model for anyone who, like myself, wonders if she can start race-walking or even running in her forties and beyond. Switzer's unequivocal answer: Yes, you can! And she tells you how to do it. The book has easy instructions for beginners, insider information ("Real runners talk about their mileage in terms of weekly, not daily mileage"), and everything you need to know about shoes, clothing, training programs, stretching, and more. Reading this book made me want to lace up my sneaks and get right out there--and I did! I'm following Switzer's program to become a 30-minute runner in 10 weeks and it's going great. (Check my progress on my blogs on [..]and [...].) Viva Switz!

5-0 out of 5 stars Running and Walking for Women Over 40
Loved it!!!!Suggested many different things for older people when starting out walking or running.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good informative book
I found this book to be a very easy read, but filled with very useful information.I had been doing some walking outside and some running on a treadmill for awhile but never really started running outside or for any long distances. This book started me to, there were many questions that I found answers to, finding the right shoes, good stretches to do afterwards, training plans. All in all a good book for the beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR WOMEN OVER 50!!!!!!
I have purchased MANY books on running but never found one that inspired me like this one.I am not an all out athlete but love to run because of the way it makes me feel. This book really talks about women of age and what to expect from walking and running. I am 53 and thought if I run to much I could really injury myself. After reading the book I have a whole different outlook and just let myself go and I've never felt soooo good. You will not regret buying this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner
If you are just getting into or thinking about a walking/running program this book is for you.If you have been doing both for some time, its a great read, just beyond where you are at in your program. I have given this book to my sister who has just turned 40 and she loved it. ... Read more

Product Description
Avid runner Scott Ludwig has seen, heard, and experienced firsthand most everything the sport has to offer. Of course, that is to be expected of someone who has run every day for over twenty-eight years. In Running through My Mind, Scott and his friends weigh in, sharing brutally honest, occasionally raw and always entertaining anecdotes to guide you through the physical and mental aspects of running:

  • A teammate on the Atlanta Track Club Men’s Masters Team, discussing a 195-mile relay: How many runners does it take to run Hood-to-Coast? Twelve members of the men’s masters’ team or one Scott Ludwig.
  • Scott after dropping out of the Western States Endurance Run: That sure sucked.
  • Scott’s views on treadmills: It’s not running if you don’t go anywhere.
  • A pal and crewmember for Scott at the Badwater Ultramarathon: When Scott was accepted into Badwater, the real question in my mind was not whether or not he would finish, but whether or not he would then let the (consecutive days of running) streak die a peaceful death.
  • Scott after finishing the Western States Endurance Run: That still sucked.

Discover the motivational narrative behind these and many other observations in Scott’s story—so far. Whether you just bought your first pair of running shoes or are a grizzled running veteran, Running through My Mind provides the encouragement you need to get out and get moving! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Will Motivate
The author is a die hard who will motivate you to achieve your best.He and his friends are very successful runners who go to crazy excess in their obsessional love of running.

2-0 out of 5 stars An ultrarunner with a matching ultra-ego
While at times amusing and entertaining, the author's primary goal is to remind the reader (over and over) that he has run more miles, marathons, days in a row, etc., than anyone dumb enough to purchase this book thinking they will get any solid running advice or inspiration.

The scope of the author's running career is exceeded only by his expectation that anyone cares.

5-0 out of 5 stars Distance Running Guru Shares His Knowledge
Ludwig writes of what he knows well: RUNNING in all its many forms. He has impressive running credentials: 676 races including 100 marathons and 40 ultra events and 105,000 miles accumulated on his then 28-year daily running streak.Scott brings a passion to both his running and his writing, and this is a book well worth reading. He lets us know that there is no finish line, only the constant struggle to overcome all the formidable challenges that life can throw our way as we keep on running down the road.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, inspirational read
Ludwig's book is an excellent read into the insight of someone who uses running as a defining part of his life; but not quite a full obsession. As a dedicated runner, with 40,000 miles on his legs, sometimes, I like to read stories of other runners who enjoy running not only as exercise but as an activity that clears the mind and provides a sense of enjoyment an freedom. Ludwig does that. He's far more into running than I am, yet provides a good read and a solid motivation. My only negative is that Ludwig isn't all that positive on trail running, preferring the road. I prefer getting out on the trails and into nature.

The biggest strengths are his streak of 30 years of running every day combined with essentially running 10+ miles every day. He manages to throw in a number of amusing anecdotes, keeping it fresh.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable
This is a very interesting book.I have really enjoyed reading it.Scott has a great since of humor and his story telling is done very well. ... Read more

My husband, age 67 with Parkinson's, spotted a mention of the author John Ball in his monthly Runner's Magazine. We "googled" John and found this book. Since my husband is a runner he related tremendously with John and was very uplifted by reading his book. This story stresses the benefits of both exercise and community in battling Parkinson's Disease. As good a primer as Running is, it takes a few momentsto turn the sense of loss attending author Flo-Jo's premature deathinto one of celebration of her accomplishments. Running'striumphant cover and 16-page full-color photographic homage to one oftrack and field's most spectacular presences serve as bridges overthis emotional gap, but, ultimately, it's Flo-Jo's own contagiouspassion and eagerness to share what she knows that kick thiscomprehensive, energetic, and entertaining guide into a truly fittingtribute.

Like a good coach, Flo-Jo works to inspire and nevercondescends; she helps you get started, spurs you on, and then sends youhuffing and puffing on your way. She explains running's physiologicaland emotional benefits in detail (and those of walking, too, if you'reso disposed); introduces you to shoes and equipment; and stresses theimportance of safety and road etiquette, good nutrition, stretching, warming up and cooling down, and, most of all, making sure thatregardless of your health or age to check first with a doctor beforebeginning any serious running program. With the basics in step, sheshoots you into the fast lane with advanced training tips, injurymaintenance and prevention advice, and racing suggestions (how tofind, prepare for, and run them), from local 5Ks on flat courses todemanding international-scale marathons.

In the For Dummiestradition, she ends with a series of top 10 lists. Two of them, takentogether, nicely capture the essence of Flo-Jo as hard-nosedcompetitor and elegant personality: More Than Ten Ways to Sharpen YourMental Edge and Ten Beautiful Races. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good info
I bought the gift for my sister-in-law for xmas. She is becoming a track coach in the spring time, but has never coached before, so i thought it would be funny to get for her.I looked the book over and it does have a lot of good information.Being a runner and a cross country coach I thought it had really good info for a beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative find
Back when I was in high school, Florence Griffith-Joyner was a huge inspiration for me.Since I was also a sprinter on the track team, that makes sense. After high school, I fell out of the habits I had followed and eventually abandoned them. Now I am older, and wiser, and I would like to get back into the walking/jogging routine. This is an EXCELLENT book to use as a refresher or as a starter.Flo-Jo has really wonderful tips and leads you every step of the way.No matter what fitness level you are at, this is a must if you are considering walking/jogging and/or running.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Basic Running Book
At first I bought this book for my research project for my English class. I chose running as my topic and eventually this book helped me much.
I am personally a noob at running but just think to start it. After reading this book, I know many things i didn't.
I also read many other running book. They are somewhat not easy to be understood, unlike this book. Though running for dummies gives just general explanation, it's simple and easy to understand, especially for the amateur runners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book if you never ran
I found this book extremely helpful when I first started exercising. If you have never run before, I believe you will find it helpful. It is a novice book, but we all have to start somewhere!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall, especially for Flo-Jo fans
This is a great buy if you are a Flo Jo fan.

For everybody else, this is a typical dummies book, it covers all the major areas of a subject, but it by no means comprehensive or in-depth. As with most dummies book, I recommend them for those looking for a quick introduction/reference to a topic. ... Read more

If you are a serious runner, you want to improve your ability to run faster and longer without injury. This book employs unique sequence photography that captures and analyzes movements that are key to a good running stride. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great start for all runners
If you want to get serious about running, then buy this book.10 years ago I had knee problems from jogging, mainly due to heal striking. My doctor told me to stop running but that was not an option for me.After reading this book, and seeing how to run correctly (not jog, there is a BIG difference), I have been running relatively injury free for 10 years+. The only injuries I get now are from over-training and not resting or stretching enough. I agree that the photos aren't great in this book compared to videos, but technology has come a long way since it was published. If you want to see proper running technique, simply go to youtube and watch Bekele and Haile Gebrselassie run the 10k. You won't catch these guys heal striking or wearing Nike style "boots" on their feet. Whether you are running on pavement, track, grass, whatever, proper technique and proper biomechanics is what you need to run fast and efficiently.Do soccer shoes have padding in the heal? Nope. Get up onto your toes and run like a Kenyan!
[...]
Also take a look at this free publication as well from Gordon Pirie "Run Fast and Injury Free".Same basic ideas
[...]
The "Pose" method is also ok.
Out of 100 runners and running coaches I talk to, maybe 2 understand why the Ethiopians run so much faster than Westerners. Some of the answers are in this book. Stop paying your coach who doesn't understand proper technique and buy this book instead.
** Be cautious if you are overweight though. You may overstress your tendons and get hurt.Like everything else, start off slow and easy.
Happy Running

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book for cross training and injury prevention
This book contains detailed explanations and images of great exercises that can be used to supplement running and prevent a lot of common running injuries. A great handbook to have at home if you are looking for help isolating and strengthening problematic, recurring injuries. That being said, it is a rather large book making it difficult to take with you to the gym, track, etc. Honestly, it is definitely worth it for any serious runners or runners who are coaching themselves. A great reference book.
-from a serious, veteran runner and running store employee.

4-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Running
I think this is a great book if you want to learn the mechanics of the perfect stride. Numerous pictures make it easy to understand what the author is describing. He also teaches you lots of exercises to strengthen your stride.

2-0 out of 5 stars Technique from a Book? Bad idea.
I bought this book wondering if it would show me any tips to improve my running technique. The book does serve as a good introduction to running technique and I would suggest the book to a person who knows nothing on the topic. However, the book left me more convinced than ever before that one cannot improve technique from lessons in a book.Coaches exist for a reason and this is one of them.Runners who have great body and muscle awareness are not going to have major problems and thus are not going to need this book.On the other hand, runners who have poor body awareness are going to need a knowledgable person (a coach) to watch them run and identify the problem. So they don't need the book either and are better of spending their money on a coaching session. This book might be useful for a student taking a college course in coaching running but that is about it.

Beside this general complaint the book itself leaves a lot to be desired. The photographs in the book are rather poor. They are simply clips from a video and suffer from all the problems that causes. It was really mind boggling to me that the publisher was so cheap as to not pay for a still camera to take photos. The poor quality images make it difficult at times to really understand what the author is refering to in the picture. It is most unfortunate that the authors obvious knoweledge is hindered by thisproblem.Further, there isn't a modern fad (running barefoot, neuromuscler training) that the author doesn't fall for.It used to be "muscle memory" was all the rage. The book would have been stronger if these issues were left out as the author comes across as pandering.

All in all I think this is a book that might serve some useful purpose for a person who knows little about proper running technique. But for a person with difficulties it is not a substitute for a some sessions with a good coach.

2-0 out of 5 stars Almost a good running publication
Almost.Yessis and Yessis (two authors) focus on the biomechanics of running, which is unusual and perhaps distinctive among publications - we've got the way to train, mostly from Jack D., and now this is an almost good book for telling us how to run.The descriptions of proper running style, and the exercises to achieve proper running style, are in the book.

But you really have to dig. What makes this book 'almost good' is that there is no structure or system to its presentation.Y & Y say what they have to say.Once.Twice, a different way.Third, a different way.And so on.

The redundancy is really not the bad point - the bad point is that there's so much laid out, it's hard to tell what you should do first.Doing it all, well, that would take eight hours a set.

Another bad point. There are far, far more 'non-examples' of runners displaying INcorrect running style than examples of runners displaying correct running style. For the typical reader (I presume I am among them), I want to see someone running right . . . not endless pictures of people who are running and are doing two, three, or four things wrong.

It seems like Y & Y have one favorite sprinter in the book who does it all right.Everyone else, be they your average marathon runner or the state high school 1,500 meeter champ or a nationally ranked 5,000 meter competitor, displays a running style per Y & Y that is "almost, but not quite, right."

The pictures are a great, great idea - but next version show us how to run, biomechanically, the right way.Give us pictures of people who either naturally or with training, are doing it ALL right.(A value-added add-on of course would be a DVD with video clips of runners running the right way.)

The explanations are helpful - but somehow, some way, please structure the presentation. Provide exercises per running element, or simple to easy, or beginner to advanced, SOME sort of organization that makes sense so that as readers we can figure out fairly easily what it is we each should incorporate into our workout schedule.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
This book, "Running For The Soul" was an absolute delight for my soul! Accolades to the author! It reminds me of another fine book with much the same expression and inspiration,"Running Forward, Looking Back" and is written by another gifted author-runner.

This gives credence to the theory that the best writers for we runners must be somene that partakes of the sport.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book...too short
This was an excellent read.Runners, who tend to be more intellectual and into reading than most athletes anyway, however, will have this devoured in about 2 hours, and then begging for more. The price is high for such a short book.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than Just A Book On Running
Running means different things to different people. This book will help you take some inspiration from others' experiences for when times get tough, breath gets short or goals seem unattainable.

It's amazing how a story of someone else's courage and against-the-odds determination, when recalled while striving to meet your own goals can carry you through to the finish line. Perhaps one of these stories can motivate you to greater achievements too.

Product Description
Author Margreet Dietz has often been asked why she runs. An accomplished marathoner now, she could barely jog for five minutes when she started in 1996.

She interviewed 53 female runners, aged from 26 until 59, about the reasons they run and the ways they make running an integral part of their busy lives. Their stories will inspire beginning runners and help motivate current ones. Two top running coaches provide great tips in two separate chapters.

This book relates the shared experience that running is for women. Some run for the simple pleasure it brings, while others race for finish lines. Some run with friends, while others run alone.

"The great thing about running is that everyone can have their own goals and everyone can walk away feeling incredible, whether it be in training or in competition," says Pat Carroll, one of Australia's top distance runners of all time and among the two coaches interviewed for Running Shoes Are a Girl's Best Friend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
This 27-page "ebooklet" succinctly describes what's involved in preparing to run races at different distances. The distance categories are somewhat loose (for example: "sprinting," "middle distance running," "marathon running,") and the descriptions are sometimes awkwardly-written.This book might be useful if your spouse or some other significant other (boss? adult child?) has taken up running as a hobby and you've been struggling to understand the content of their jargon-filled monologues. This would give you some context and a basis for common understanding.

I'm dubious of this book's value to someone who has already taken up running, as more information than what is presented here would be required to train and prepare for running any of these distances successfully.Despite the title, there are no actual training plans or programs included in the book.

I made this purchase without the benefit of a review and feel I didn't quite get my money's worth, even for the negligible money I spent. My hope is that this short review will leave other prospective purchasers better equipped for their buying decision. ... Read more

No pain-maximum gain.

More than half of all runners in the U.S. are sidelined at least once a year because of an injury. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and Reference!
An excellent book and reference for both beginner and seasoned runners. The book is laid out in an excellent format and is clearly, superbly written. This book also touches upon form, stretching, and other aspects that most runners take for granted. I have purchased a plethora of other running books out there and this one takes the cake! Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST!
Coach Damon Martin is a very smart man. He knows so much about running. This is a key book to anyone that doesn't run, or does run. All in all you have to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Little Book!
Despite the corny title, this book packs a ton of good information into its chapters.Damon Martin is not just a coach, but a true "Road Scholar" whose fluency in the science behind his training program is apparent in every chapter. At the same time, the book is not at all technical and is accessible to a wide audience.

His insights into applying different types of workouts and periodization in training are some of the best I've seen. The information on weight training, cross training, stretching and nutrition were also helpful.I've never been disciplined about stretching before or after I run, but after reading this book I see that this small step could really help my running.

Finally, the anecdotes from his years as a college coach are inspiring, heart-warming, and at times hilarious.Any veteran or beginning runner will appreciate the stories that animate this monograph. Coach Martin has written a book that will stand the test of time!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Running Injury-Free
I think this was a well written book and will be enjoyed by many aspiring runners and atheletes. This will allow them to train injury free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running again...
This book gave me great ideas for my training program. I have been a runner off and on for years with not much success and lots of nagging injuries. After reading this, I can see several areas where I can improve my plan and stay healthy as I am trying to keep on my running schedule. I appreciate the simple and easy to use language. Love the stories about the runners, very heartwarming and inspiring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for Good Advice!
This book has been my salvation in training/conditioning myself. I simply wanted to "get into" running for enjoyment and health. I have been recovering from a back injury for several years and can no longer do the circuit training I used to. Walking and running is something I figured I could do to get the recently gained weight off and reduce stress. I started on my own and struggled SO MUCH....until I got this book! It gives sound advice on the body and how it functions with certain foods and exercise. It gives very detailed instructions/plans for all levels of athleticism and goals. I have gone for three weeks now and am still going strong. Very realistic plans/goals and easy to read! I would recommend this to anyone wanting to run.

5-0 out of 5 stars I did NOT like running!
I am 6'0" 285lbs. have had two knee surgeries and a reconstructive ankle surgery so I thought running would not be something for me. In fact, I hated running and was told by doctors I could never do it. I started off slow and by week three I am already running three miles during a workout. This book overemphasises taking your time and walk breaks which are much needed. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I have enetered in my first 5K race ever and plan to continue running and move towards the half marathon and eventually the marathon. GREAT BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for new runners
Taking up running is not as easy as it seems. We have a culture of sitting at computers in cars or doing something that does not involve physical activity.Making the change from no activity to one physical activity can be daunting.Running, getting started by Jeff Galloway sets a simple path forward with clear instructions for every step of the way.I have been running for more than 10 years and read the whole book in one day.I got a lot of useful information about pacing and nutrition. You do not have to agree with every thing he says.Take what you can use from the information provided and tailor it to your needs.Use the book for ideas and get out and run.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for getting started with running!
I have been running for about three months now, and recently became interested in Jeff Galloway's training methods.I picked up a few of his books, including this one.Running: Getting Started gives the reader a thorough introduction to the sport of running and Jeff Galloway's "run/walk/run" approach. It covers a variety of important subjects, such as buying running shoes, how to start training, cross-training, nutrition, running form, dealing with different weather conditions, aches and pains, motivation, and running at different ages. There are many nuggets of wisdom and practical advice. The book is attractively presented with glossy pages and color pictures.

There are a couple of minor downsides and watch-outs.The writing style is a little clumsy in parts, but not to the point that it's distracting. It's also worth noting that this book is clearly aimed at the beginning runner. If you're more of an experienced runner looking for insight into Jeff Galloway's techniques or his advice on training for a race, you are probably better off buying Galloway's Book on Running or one of his books designed for race training (5K and 10K, half marathon, marathon, etc.)

I'm very happy I bought this book, and it has given me a lot of useful insights that I have been able to apply to my training.Jeff Galloway's training techniques are helping me run longer distances at a good pace WITHOUT feeling exhausted!

5-0 out of 5 stars Running- Getting started by Jeff Galloway
This is a great book for anyone intrested in or just starting out running.I've been running for about 8 years now, but only for fun.I learned a lot from reading this book.I would recommend it especially for young people just beginning, but it is great for the older runners also. ... Read more

Product Description
This guide helps runners at all levels, from absolute beginners to those training for marathon racing. The training plan is divided to match each runner's grade of fitness. Readers assess themselves by answering fitness questionnaires that guide them to the appropriate level of training. At the end of each training grade, another self-assessment questionnaire helps runners decide whether to move to a higher level or remain where they are. A ten-week program begins with alternating two-minute runs and walks, and gradually progresses to sustained runs of 30 minutes. Runners are advised to "listen to their bodies" and remain at a specific week's level until they feel comfortable about progressing to the next one. General topics include getting started, obtaining the right shoes and accessories, adhering to a runner's diet, developing self-motivation, and following a structured and progressive training program. A final section is focused to advise runners training for a marathon. More than 150 color photos and illustrations plus sidebar tips and quick-reference charts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic....
The book arrived fast and it was in great condition, like it was described on the site.

Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Regiments for First-Time Runners Looking to Get Fit!
For me, this book worked wonders! Running a marathon was always a personal goal of mine, but not being naturally athletically inclined, I couldn't run a single mile, let alone 26.2 when I committed to running the 2008 Chicago Marathon. 26 weeks out, I started with the 10 week "learn to run" program where you start out at almost nothing, alternating between running and walking for 2 minutes each. Long story short, with the help of this book, I went from not being able to run PERIOD to finishing the Chicago Marathon!

4-0 out of 5 stars As the title suggests - for Beginners
If you've read nothing else about running, this is a good a place as any to start. If you've read two other books about running, the information provided will not be for you.

Where it got its four stars from me was in the training schedule.Although for beginners, you'll find plans in here for anyone wanting a 2:50 marathon finish time. You rarely see that in most beginner books.

I bought it because the price was right ($1.83) but think I'd pay the $10+ Amazon offers if I had to.You'll read it in less than an hour but will spend plenty of time applying the training.

I intend to do so for an upcoming marathon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good little book
This is a solid, yet brief, introduction to long distance running. Their are good training programs inside for all distances from 5k to ultra-marathon. The focus of the training guides is more on time than on distance.

Another good book for those interested in long distance is the Non-runner's guide to marathon trainer. Good mental tips to keep yourself going.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, ample information for a beginner
I have been following 2 of the 6 training programmes in this book. The Level 1 programme is ideal for novices who are looking to get into running.Following the Level 2 programme I ran a 5k race within 6 weeks of starting training and was surprised at how well I did. After a one year hiatus from running due to an unrelated injury, I am looking forward to entering my 2nd 5k race in a few weeks. If you follow the training programmes in this book you will get excellent results.

Besides, the training programmes the book is filled with tips that go into as much detail as necessary for a novice runner.Topics include, diet, clothing and injuries. I feel that the upper level programmes lack the detail of those in the lower level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars solid information
It is very helpful for a noncomplicated pregnancy. It provides a wealth of information otherwise skipped in the literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide through active pregnancy
First of all (and I have to say this inspired by a last review I read): this is not a book for women who decided to start running after they got pregnant- it's aimed towards women who are already above the average active.
I found it extremely useful since I'm a semi-pro athlete and was worried about exercising while pregnant- now I'm 29 weeks along and I plan on running as long as I can. I am adjusting my level of exercise to my pregnancy weeks of course, this is not a period of your life for setting records and testing your limits.

To all mom-to-be runners: use the second trimester the best you can- it's amazing how as soon as I hit the 3rd my body just slowed down and is asking for more rest. Listen to your bodies. :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I found this book to be poorly written, often times in the style of a trashy women's magazine--vapid and full of useless filler for the sake of needing enough material to write a book.

I can understand how some women would find it to be inspirational to read about ultra-marathoners and Ironman competitors running while pregnant but I found it to be a bit of a turn off.How realistic is this for the average pregnant woman who just wants to run for fitness?

I did find the stretches to be useful, and wish there could have been more useful information like this in the book. It felt like it read more like a pregnancy manual at times then a fitness book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and helpful
I liked this book, it was recommended by a woman in my running group. It doesn't give you any hard and fast answers but maybe that's because every pregnancy is different. Some of the tidbits about real life moms who ran through pregnancy are inspiring, from a woman who ran a 3:45 marathon when several months pregnant to the woman who had to scale back her training due to pregnancy. I would recommend this book to runners who get pregnant and want to keep running while pregnant.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but too much alike Running and Fatburning for Women
I liked reading this book. it gave alot of good information. the only down side was that i bought it with Running and Fatburning for Women and the two books had many identical pages. and by many i'd say atleast 30 pages were identical between the two. once i read the first i blew through the second because so many pages were the same. so my advice would be to only get one or the other not both.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK
I got this book today, Christmas, from my husband. I couldn't put it down and read the entire book. It was great to get some more information on running and how it relates to me as a woman. I ran in high school, but never did any long distances. I completed my first half marathon in June and LOVED it so much. I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate running into my lifestyle. This was a great book. I hope to be a runner for life and feel like this book gave me some new information and insight into how to do that!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Running On Third Wind
This book is for yesterday's, today's and tomorrow's runners.Being one of yesterday's dedicated long-distance runners, I found the topics to be interesting, informative and in some respects, very familiar; they brought back many memories.I learned the running histories of the elites, going back at least three decades; some I personally knew, but many I've never heard of until I read Mike's book.I even learned more about Mike's background even though we have known each other for many years.Tor today's and tomorrow's serious and/or competitive runners, the various training plans and recommendations in this book will be immeasurable.I highly recommend reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running on Third Wind
If there is another book on running that covers as much as this one does, I have not found it. The author seemingly discusses every possible subject related to running:heart and knee problems, overtraining, aging concerns, developing speed, mental toughness, common excuses, risk factors, cheaters, burnout, addiction, what have you. There are 72 different chapters, 25 of which are interviews with great runners of the past. There is much to learn from their experiences. It is an encyclopedia of running.

5-0 out of 5 stars For runners and non-runners alike
I've never run a marathon in my life, but I once hiked 50 miles. Back in 1960, John Kennedy was President, lean and trim and a national shot of energy after grey, old man Eisenhower. In 1962, Kennedy challenged his staff to a 50 mile hike, the media picked up the story, and out in a small college in Illinois five 19-year olds, including me, decided we could do that. Piece of cake, right? With tennis shoes and no preparation, we started strong, faded rapidly, walked the last 30 miles, and limped home exhausted 12 hours later. It left me in permanent awe of champion marathoners who can run 26 miles non-stop, and finish in just over two hours.

Author Mike Tymn never ran a world-record, sub-2:04 marathon, but he's won his share of laurels. Most middle-aged men can't hustle out a hit to first base in a softball game without getting winded. Mike soared after 40, winning four national masters championships, and took the 1979 Maui Marathon crown with a remarkable time of 2 hours, 28 minutes, 43 seconds.

What else soars is his new book Running on Third Wind. (BookSurge Publishing, November 2009, ISBN-13: 978-1439262283). This delightful, eclectic collection of 72 columns was selected from 350+ pieces covering three decades of Mike's reporting on runners and running for National Masters News. (A prolific scribe, Mike also wrote for Runner's World for five years, and has been penning a monthly feature for Running Times since 1994).

The finely polished work in this anthology includes columns written as recently as 2009, but among the best is the earliest, an August 1980 gem called "The Mile as a Microcosm of Life." A mile race requires equal amounts of strength (anaerobic capacity) and endurance (aerobic capacity) notes Mike. "And so it seems with life."

As we all are in youth, the runner in the first quarter mile is "fresh, spirited, impulsive," just like England's Roger Bannister who ran history's first sub-4 minute mile. Back in 1954, many people firmly believed the four-minute barrier was unbreakable. On Bannister's initial lap, "His legs felt no resistance and it was as if he was being `propelled by some unknown force.'" In the second lap (young adulthood), we're all striving for position and the battle intensifies; success requires us to establish a position and a rhythm in our own life race. Bannister's helped him clock a 1:58 half mile; he was half way home, his dream intact. The third lap, like middle age, can be comfortable and even serene for runners and non-runners alike if we maintain a steady pace, keeping our focus and composure as Bannister did."He slowed to a 62.7-second autumnal lap, still well within reach of four minutes." The gun lap, old age, writes our ending. Physically and mentally tired, we need both belief and willpower to cross the finish line with our youthful goals intact."My body had long since exhausted all its energy," Bannister recalled, "but it went on running just the same. The physical overdraft came only from greater willpower." Bannister covered the last lap in 58.7 seconds, lunging across the finish line a mere six-tenths of a second under the magical four minute mark, igniting a worldwide celebration of the human spirit. Mike's neat analogy works.

His writing throughout is tight and bright. His 1980 profile of woman masters runner Sister Marion Irvine begins: "You've heard of the flying nun and the singing nun.Now meet the running nun." Mike expected a woman in a wimple and black habit, clutching a rosary. Instead, "Five minutes past our appointed time, a red compact car came screeching to a halt, stirring up dust in front of the convent. Out jumped a spry, tall (5-foot-10), wiry woman dressed in shorts, sandals and a colorful cotton shirt." As they made their way inside to the convent sitting room, "I had to shift gears and lengthen my stride to keep up with her." Few people her age could. In her first marathon, the Dominican sister recorded a time of 3:01:55, shattering the record for women aged 50 and older by almost three minutes.

Her miraculous story is just one of 25 fascinating interviews with legendary runners included in this collection. 1936 Berlin Olympian runner (5000 meters) Lou Zamperini tells Mike how he almost got shot trying to steal a swastika flag from the chancellery flagpole (Hitler eventually told the guards to give him the souvenir). Kansas great Jim Ryun, the first American high schooler to break a 4 minute mile (1964, in 3:59:0; only two other kids have done it since), tells Mike how he turned from chasing gold (as in medals) to God when he found "something was missing" in his competitive racing life. 1972 Munich Olympic marathon winner and American hero Frank Shorter talks about the ravages of time. "The biggest problem when you turn 40 is that you still have a mind that wants to run 120 miles a week but a body that can run 90."

The dark side of running pops up in several thoughtful pieces. What drives the occasional marathoner to cheat, surreptitiously joining a race at the half-way point, risking humiliation and disqualification? "I can understand, though not condone, some clown jumping in the race toward the end as a lark," Mike muses following a 1988 race scandal. "I can even understand someone with a criminal mind doing it to collect the prize money. But I do not understand what motivates two supposedly mature men to fly a few thousand miles to win nothing more than a trophy valued at about $20."

Can running become an unhealthy addiction? Mike didn't think much of it until a runner friend of his visited a local psychic who informed the runner she sometimes saw spirits of deceased runners tagging along on his daily workout. Mike's interview with Maggie the Mystic turned into one of the book's concluding columns, "Do Runaholics Go to Hell?" It left him wondering. "Is Maggie some sort of kook or does she really know something? All I can say is that she comes across as a very credible and sincere person. My friend, her neighbor, agrees and has cut back his weekly mileage from 90 to 50 while also giving up his Sunday morning long run to accompany his wife to church services."
