Why are the animals on the beach? The marine mammals that most often come ashore at the Children's Pool beach are Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina) and California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus). The seals "haul out" on the Children's Pool beach in the Fall, Winter and Spring. They come to the protected beach when offshore rocks are washed by high surf and corresponding high tides. Seals are smaller and have a sleeker torpedo type of shape. They move with a rhythmic sliding or shuffling motion, and they don't use their flippers to support their body. The sea lions are being used to swim patrols of sorts, protecting ships from possible mines and other dangers. The Sea Lions in Monterey don't seem to move much, but they can actually swim about 30 miles per hour and are smarter than many think. They can learn hand signals, and the Navy has trained them to tag a diver who might be trying to plant a bomb on a U.S. ship. The diver is tagged with a tracking device. "A sea lion will tag the guy ... it cuffs someone who might plant a bomb on a boat and then the people will take over," former Navy Seal Ralph Winkler said.

Extractions: Sea Lions and Fur Seals are fin-footed mammals with amazing abilities in water. Their speed and agility in water contrasts to their clumsy waddling on land. Seals agility in the water makes it possible for them to maneuver safely in pounding surf and along jagged rocks. These warm-blooded mammals have adapted over the years to life in the water. Millions of years ago their ancestors were land creatures who hunted the coastline for food. Their adaptation, unlike other marine mammals much as whales and dolphins, did not make the seals completely independent of the land as they spend a portion of their life lazing along the coast. With their adaptation and graceful ability in water it seems incredible that baby seals need to learn to swim. Seals are born on land and are taught to swim by their mothers. The young pup is picked up by the back of the neck and is carried into the water by its mother. At first the pup struggles against the surf, but by the time it is a few months old it easily breaks through the surf without problem. The 'Unofficial Welcoming Committee' of the Galapagos Islands is the Sea Lion. Their playful inquisitive nature, speed, agility on land, and bark quickly make them an island favorite.

Extractions: Disappearing Sea Lions There are some big lions on the west coast of Canada. They dont have yellow manes, but they do roar (and have their own personalities!) Hear the sealions here: These are Steller sea lions. And theyre dying off. In 1980 there were 300,000 of them, but now there are only 100,000. Scientists want to find out why the sea lions are disappearing. A group of researchers from four universities in Canada and the United States are working in labs at the Vancouver Aquarium to get to the bottom of it. There are several possibilities. Maybe predators like killer whales are eating too many sea lions. Maybe the sea lions are dying from parasites and diseases. Or maybe theyre not getting enough good food to eat. Researchers are looking into this idea, but how can scientists tell what a sea lion eats? They cant follow the animal into a restaurant and check the menu, but they do have a record of what the sea lion put in its mouth. Its what comes out the other end. Sea lion poop. Extractions: Seals And Sea Lions CALIFORNIA SEA LION (Zalophus c. californiaus) CLASS: Mammalia ORDER: Pinnipedia FAMILY: Otariidae GENUS: Zalophus Sea lions are grouped with other seals and sea lions which are all called pinnipeds, (fin-footed ones). CLASSIFICATION The Sea Lion belongs to the family called Otariidae, which means eared seals. They are closely related to the Fur Seals and five other species of sea lions. Habitat Seal Lions are found in three areas. They can be found along much of the west coast of North America, the Galapogos Islands, and the Southern Sea of Japan. They generally can be found on sandy or rocky beaches and most often gather on islands to be safe from land predators like wolves, bears, dogs, and mountain lions. Adaptations: The sea lion is very streamlined and is capable of catching fish in open water. They also have their shape to prevent heat loss. Seal Lions see very well both above and below water but do not see in color. Their hearing is also very good. The seal lion has a 3/4 inch thick layer of blubber just under their skin which covers nearly their entire body. This helps to protect them from the cold ocean water they are usually found in. Their fur is not very thick so their blubber is their only real protection from the cold. The main differences between seals and sea lions is that seal lions have longer flippers in the front as well as in the back. This is why sea lions can walk on land much better then a seal can.
