In 748, Slovenia was brought under Germanic rule, first by the Frankish empire of the Carolingians, who converted the population to Christianity, and then as part of the Holy Roman Empire in the 9th century. The Austro-German monarchy took over in the early 14th century and continued to rule (as the Austrian Habsburg Empire from 1804) right up until 1918 - with only one brief interruption. Over these six centuries, the upper classes became totally Germanised, though the peasantry retained their Slavic (later Slovenian) identity. In 1809, in a bid to isolate the Habsburg Empire from the Adriatic, Napoleon established the so-called Illyrian Provinces (Slovenia, Dalmatia and part of Croatia), making Ljubljana the capital (which it still is today). Though the Habsburgs returned in 1814, French reforms in education, law and public administration endured. The democratic revolution that swept Europe in 1848 also increased political and national consciousness among the Slovenes, and after WWI and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovenia was included in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. During WWII much of Slovenia was annexed by Germany, with Italy and Hungary taking smaller shares. Slovenian partisans fought against the invaders from mountain bases. Slovenia joined the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1945 and remained behind the Iron Curtain for several decades.

After the brief break-up of Yugoslavia perpetrated by the Nazis, Tito reconstituted the country with Slovenia as a constituent `republic.' In 1990, a decade after Tito's death, Communism fell and Slovenia wasted little time in proclaiming its first true independence in 1991. With strong economic links to Austria, Italy, and Hungary, Slovenia has remained prosperous and secure, with little involvement in the troubles to the south.

Here we represent typical calling songs of 9 species od cicadas, 8 of them found in Slovenia and 1 - Cicadetta mediterranea - living on the nearby coast of Southern Istria near Pula (Croatia) Songs of some smaller species are high pitched, ranging into ultrasound (e.g. Tettigetta brullei ) and are not easily detectable by unaided ear. A " bat or ultrasonic detector UsD , in our case an Ultra Sound Advice S-25 detector) with a directional microphone ( Mic ) helps to localize such small cicadas even at distances up to 50 m. Recordings presented here were made with a directional microphone Telinga DAT recorder (TCD-D3 or TCD-D7)( DAT ) by Matija Gogala (Ljubljana) and Andrej V. Popov (St.Petersburg, Russia) during the summers 1994/95 in Slovenia and in one case using different recording equipment ( Cicadetta montana Due to high frequencies in the songs of some species we use here the sound files with the high sampling rate of 48 kS/s. If you can not play back sounds with the same rate use the lower sampling rate but be aware, that the sounds are slightly slowed down and lowered in pitch.

EDUCATION The Slovene government requires that all children receive eight years of primary education and four years of secondary education. Almost all Slovenes over the age of ten can read and write. Although not obliga- tory by law, most students receive postsecondary or higher levels of education. There are 30 institutions of higher education in Slovenia; among them is the University of Ljubljana, which was founded in 1595.

In 1922, a meeting of an important political and sporting movement of Yugoslavia and some other European Countries, called "Sokoli" (Falcons), took place in Ljubljana. Scouting was established in Slovenia in 1922. It was officially dissolved on June 10th, 1941 because of World War II. The World Organization of the Scout Movement welcomed Slovenia into its membership in September 1994. Zveza Tabornikov Slovenije (ZTS) has been recognized as the national member organization of Slovenia. The enthusiastic young girls and boys of the Slovenian contingent at the European Jamboree impressed everyone with the quality of their Scouting skills. This reflects very well on the training being provided to all members of the Movement in Slovenia. Zveza Tabornikov Slovenije is a recognized member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement since September 1994. As the recognized national Scout organization in Slovenia ZTS guarantees the rights of WOSM membership which this bestows upon an individual to the members of another Slovenian Scout organization, Zdruzenje Slovenskih Katoliskih Skavtinj in Skavtov (ZSKSS), founded in 1990). This enables individual members of ZSKSS to participate in international Scout events and meetings.

The AI Laboratory at JSI (now Department of Intelligent Systems ) and AI Laboratory at FRI were formally founded in 1979 and 1981, respectively. Both research groups are lead by Professor Ivan Bratko and closely cooperate. Initially, research was concerned with heuristic search, including knowledge-based approaches to computer chess. The emphasis then gradually shifted and expanded to the areas of machine learning, knowledge representation, computer-aided multi-attribute decision making, qualitative reasoning and modelling, and combinatorial optimisation. This provided a solid basis for later application projects. In 1982, the development and implementation of AI tools started and soon resulted in practical applications. By now, over 60 application oriented projects were accomplished in a number of domains including: financial, management, project/enterprise assessment, metallurgy, geology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering and medicine. Most of the applications were based on Assistant Professional , an inductive learning system, and DEX , a computer-aided decision making system. In 1800, he performed measurements on Grossglockner (3797m), in 1801 he was on Hocheck, in 1808 as the fourth person to climb Triglav. He was among the first mountain climbers that `walked' around without a guide. At the end of the 19th century, the joint German-Austrian Mountaineering Society (DÖAV, Deutsch-Österreichischer Alpenverein, merged in 1874) had five sections (outlets): in Kranj, Maribor, Celje, Villach and Trieste. Foreign mountain climbers marked German paths and built German mountain huts on our territory, which the Slovenian hikers were not allowed to use. They were very few Slovenian hikers at that time: Franc Kladnik (1925-1908) was one of them, a never-tired solo walker. But the first initiative to establish a Slovenian mountaineering organisation came already in 1872 from Ivan Zan from Srednja vas in Bohinj. The society of `The Friends of Triglav' had one primary goal: to take care of the `Triglav Temple', i.e. a bivouac on Prodi, the first little mountain hut in the immediate vicinity of Triglav.
