You will receive training in plant pathology, weed science, and entomology as well as botany, agronomy, horticulture, chemistry, mathematics, computer sciences, economics, and business management. The CP option is cooperatively administered by the departments of Botany and Plant Pathology and Entomology. Career Opportunities The Crop Protection option prepares you for a career as agricultural consultants in crop protection and for positions in sales and management, product development, chemical research, pesticide application, field research, and with federal and state regulatory agencies. This program also provides you with an excellent background to do graduate work in crop protection leading to an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in plant pathology, weed science, entomology, or related areas. Employment continues to be strong for School of Agriculture graduates, with 94 percent of the May 1999 graduates employed or continuing their education as of October 1, 1999. This extends the trend of more than 90 percent employment within four months of graduation for School of Agriculture graduates begun in 1993. Reported starting salaries for all B.S. degree holders averaged $30,318 in 1999.

About Soil Science Research at NWROC... click here to view his Biography Dr. Albert Sims Assistant Professor Position description: Assistant Professor specializing in soil and residue management for production of small grains in farming systems, as well as soil and water conservation, in northwest Minnesota. This description is quite broad and has the potential of being very diverse. With an 80 % research and 20% outreach appointment I spend most of my time doing research related activities, but I am always available to provide information to the fine people of Minnesota and especially northwest Minnesota. From an informational standpoint, I have and can provide information on a wide range of soil science related topics. Some information I have from my own training and research, while in other cases I try to identify and locate the appropriate expert to provide information. From a research standpoint, I have focused my attention on two specific topics. Residue Management: I have on going research to examine the decomposition of small grain residues in the soils of the Red River Valley and what relationship that may have on the survival of Fusarium graminearum, which causes Fusarium Head Blight (FHB). There have been several abstracts and research reports published on this work and several more publications from this research are expected within the next 12 months. I have also been heavily involved in the nitrogen benefit that can be derived from green sugarbeet canopies on the follow spring wheat crop. This research contributed to a revision in nitrogen fertilizer recommendations for spring wheat following a sugarbeet crop. Several publications, abstracts, and research reports have been published, accepted, or are being reviewed at this time.
