Extractions: I am interested in geographic information science and cartography. My work has been primarily in the area of quantitative mapping and the psychology of maps. Subjects of publications have included: map complexity, two-variable maps, the use of color in mapping, designing maps for people with defective color vision, and multimedia in geography. I have enjoyed working with classes on special projects including the development of a tactile map of the MSU campus (for use with the Nomad), production of a prototype CD-ROM, development of web products, construction of full-color paper maps, and building our local knowledge of high tech presentation graphics.

Dymon, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Geography Member, Water Resources Research Institute Dr. Dymon is a geographer with a specialization in cartography and hazards management mapping. She has conducted research throughout the U.S. Education: She received her BS (1979) in Geography and Mathematics, her MA (1984) in Geography and her Ph.D. (1985) in Geography from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. She was the recipient of a Clark University Fellowship (1979-85) and was awarded the Keuffel and Esser Fellowship in Surveying and Cartography (1983) presented by the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. After working for nearly fifteen years as an applied cartographer, Ute Dymon returned to school to earn a Ph.D. at Clark University. Her initial appointment was at the University of Massachusetts. While there, she co-authored, with the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Environmental Law Enforcement, the Atlas of Massachusetts River Systems: Environmental Designs for the Future, a defense of greenways as links for maintaining healthy ecosystems. In the summer of 1991, she was a cartographer with the United Nations in New York. She came to Kent State University in January of 1992 as an Assistant Professor of Geography and served as an Associate Professor since September 1997 in the Geography Department. During the 2000/2001 schoolyear, she was the Scientist-in-Residence with the United States Geological Survey.

The University of Oregon's innovative digital atlas competed against the best maps and atlases in the world, including the new "National Geographic Family Reference Atlas." The Oregon atlas, created in the UO Geography Department's InfoGraphics Laboratory in collaboration with UO Press, was awarded Best of Show and Best of Category honors in the Book and Atlas division. The awards will be presented March 31 in Phoenix, Ariz., at a ceremony during the organization's annual international convention. The "Atlas of Oregon CD-ROM" is a two-disc compendium of information about the state's economy, culture, history and natural resources. The project's creative team, headed by InfoGraphics director James Meacham and lead designer Erik Steiner, re-imagined the bestselling, 300-page "Atlas of Oregon" print edition for easy access using a computer. The result has garnered international attention for its cutting-edge use of digital wizardry to present information in new and powerful ways. Extractions: Introduction Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering, formally Survey College of Combined Service Force, was founded in Peking in 1903 as Surveying and Mapping School, when the Republic of China was established in 1911. It was renamed Central Surveying School, and moved to several places during the years of North Expedition, War World II and Civic War. Following the transfer of nationalist government to Taiwan in 1949, it became subordinate to Combined Service Force. The consolidation in 1969 of three military academies Army Institute of Technology, Naval Engineering College, and Survey College of Combined Service Force, led to the foundation of Chung Cheng Institute of Technology (CCIT). The Survey College was united by affiliating to Engineering School of CCIT as Department of Surveying Engineering and remained until it was re-entitled Surveying and Mapping in 1988. To cultivate the surveying and mapping officials with advanced technology. To evolve the characteristic military surveying and mapping so as to underlie the strength of national defense and to facilitate the development of national defense industry. Students are instructed amid a milieu where philosophy, military science and natural science are conjugated. It is anticipated that students be practical, innovative, and agreeable to integrating theories with their applications. This Department is affiliated to the Engineering School of CCIT. In order to meet the needs of national defense. There are three groups within this department: Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Geodesy, and Cartography. Geodetic datums define the size and shape of the earth and the origin and orientation of the coordinate systems used to map the earth. Hundreds of different datums have been used to frame position descriptions since the first estimates of the earth's size were made by Aristotle. Datums have evolved from those describing a spherical earth to ellipsoidal models derived from years of satellite measurements. Modern geodetic datums range from flat-earth models used for plane surveying to complex models used for international applications which completely describe the size, shape, orientation, gravity field, and angular velocity of the earth. While cartography, surveying, navigation, and astronomy all make use of geodetic datums, the science of geodesy is the central discipline for the topic. Referencing geodetic coordinates to the wrong datum can result in position errors of hundreds of meters. Different nations and agencies use different datums as the basis for coordinate systems used to identify positions in geographic information systems, precise positioning systems, and navigation systems. The diversity of datums in use today and the technological advancements that have made possible global positioning measurements with sub-meter accuracies requires careful datum selection and careful conversion between coordinates in different datums.
