Product Description
A proven recovery plan for the over 8 million sufferers of repetitive strain injury, and a guide for the prevention of future injuries.

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a painful, potentially disabling condition that most commonly stems from damage to the upper torso. Long-term misuse or overuse of everyday tools like computers and cash registers results in the painful hands, arms, and neck that are symptomatic of RSI, a condition whose incidence has increased 80 percent in this country since 1990.

The Repetitive Strain Injury Handbook is a unique, user-friendly guide that is broken into two parts: (1) the 8-step recovery plan and (2) an RSI prevention guide. The 8-step plan moves RSI sufferers beyond the common denial of this ailment and into a diagnosis and treatment plan with a doctor. It provides:

Nutrition adviceAn exercise programBreathing tipsTraditional and alternative pain management suggestions A holistic maintenance plan for long-term health

The second section is filled with suggestions, stories, and tips for RSI sufferers that will help them live pain-free at home, at work, and in their social and intimate lives. There is also a special section of information on women and RSI, since pregnancy, PMS, osteoporosis, mastectomy, and menopause can all aggravate this condition. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Best section available on "coping" strategy
If your repetitive strain situation has gotten to the point where you need primarily information on coping with the pain and inconvenience, possibly from surgery, this book has the best coverages of that aspect, among the 6 books I've read. The non-MD author appears to have written approximately 1/3 of the book from a non-technical viewpoint, describing the life experiences and ideas on coping, down to the most intimate issues. Easily worth the "price of admission" for any of the ideas you might pick up. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

    Book Description
Recent outbreaks of illnesses traced to contaminated sprouts and lettuce illustrate the holes that exist in the system for monitoring problems and preventing foodborne diseases. Although it is not solely responsible for ensuring the safety of the nation's food supply, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees monitoring and intervention for 80 percent of the food supply. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's abilities to discover potential threats to food safety and prevent outbreaks of foodborne illness are hampered by impediments to efficient use of its limited resources and a piecemeal approach to gathering and using information on risks. Enhancing Food Safety: The Role of the Food and Drug Administration, a new book from the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, responds to a congressional request for recommendations on how to close gaps in FDA's food safety systems.

Enhancing Food Safety begins with a brief review of the Food Protection Plan (FPP), FDA's food safety philosophy developed in 2007. The lack of sufficient detail and specific strategies in the FPP renders it ineffectual. The book stresses the need for FPP to evolve and be supported by the type of strategic planning described in these pages. It also explores the development and implementation of a stronger, more effective food safety system built on a risk-based approach to food safety management. Conclusions and recommendations include adopting a risk-based decision-making approach to food safety; creating a data surveillance and research infrastructure; integrating federal, state, and local government food safety programs; enhancing efficiency of inspections; and more.

Although food safety is the responsibility of everyone, from producers to consumers, the FDA and other regulatory agencies have an essential role. In many instances, the FDA must carry out this responsibility against a backdrop of multiple stakeholder interests, inadequate resources, and competing priorities. Of interest to the food production industry, consumer advocacy groups, health care professionals, and others, Enhancing Food Safety provides the FDA and Congress with a course of action that will enable the agency to become more efficient and effective in carrying out its food safety mission in a rapidly changing world. ... Product Description
Space Nuclear Safety, the first, and presently, the only book written on the topic of space nuclear safety, is a comprehensive textbook intended for professors and students. The principal authors and contributors are recognized leaders in their field of expertise. The book is also a convenient reference book for nuclear engineers, aerospace safety specialists, project managers, and government staff. Although Space Nuclear Safety is oriented toward nuclear engineers and aerospace safety professionals, the material should be accessible to engineers, scientists, graduate students and upper division undergraduate students without nuclear engineering or aerospace backgrounds. Space Nuclear Safety covers both radioisotope power sources and space reactor systems. The chapters address safety principles and safety analysis methods and include discussions of safety issues and scenarios, protection and mitigation methods, and safety testing. Topics include radiation protection and shielding, propellant fires and explosions, orbital mechanics, atmospheric reentry, impact and analysis, reactor criticality safety, reactor transient analysis, risk/reliability analysis, and consequence analysis. Student exercises are provided that can be solved using a handheld calculator. Although the book focuses on relatively simple safety analysis methods, each chapter provides a brief discussion of computer analysis methods used in space nuclear safety programs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great outdoors
Our family loves being outdoors. Some of our best family memories are of hiking and camping.Lately though, we are being more conscious of the dangers of insect bites. What used to seem like a simple mosquito bite or tic can lead to West Nile Virus and Lime Disease. All the information floating around just makes us more afraid. We have been searching for a guide that could tell us what we needed to know- this is finally it!This book is easy to read and has all the up-to-date information. It is interesting to just sit and read if you really want to learn more on insects and disease, but if you want to look up something quick, like I usually do, it is a great resourse. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys spending time outside. The illustrations are great too. This one is definately coming along for our next hiking or camping trip!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop bugs
This book has it all, from how to know what's biting, how to change your house so you have less problems, to how to use insecticides and repellents. The sections on insecticides and on natural repellents were well-balanced -- they did not make claims of absolute safety or absolute danger, but they discussed the fears and doubts that people often have about those kinds of treatments. The authors attempted to give advice that would be good anywhere in the world.

Unlike a field guide, this book leads a person through all the issues that are important. It seems to be designed to be read from cover to cover by a person who knows very little about bugs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, We Can - A Shot in the Arm For Dreamers and Fighters
My daily commute sometimes includes driving behind a car with this bumper sticker: Make Good Choices.

David Hemenway's book shows how creating a safer world requires just that. The catch is that those good choices don't come without a fight.

This book tells the story of those successful fights and the fascinating and brave people who had a great idea and then just. didn't. give. up.I learned why the Metro stations in Washington, DC, have always seemed so peaceful, and I got a new perspective on how revolutionary the seat belts in my family's 1965 Volvo station wagon were.

This book is fun to read.It will make you see the world in a new light. You will start to see injury prevention interventions everywhere you look. And as a consequence you will imagine the faces of the people saved by the foresight and hard work of the creative hearty people that David Hemenway salutes.

Feel helpless about the oil spill? Wondering if we're on the road to ruin?Read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick & fascinating overview of an oft-neglected area of public health!
David Hemenway's book is informative, entertaining, and inspiring.Written by one of our nation's leading injury prevention advocates, this book achieves achieves two important aims:it provides concrete examples of many universal public health concepts; and it illuminates ways in which non-public-health-professionals can effect big changes.(Think "Erin Brockovich," but with drunk driving and violence-prevention instead of nasty chemicals!)

I think "While We Were Sleeping" would make a great introductory read for students in public health classes. It would also be a quick, and interesting, read for a lay-person with a passion to improve the world, or with a curiosity about why part of our society work the way they do (why do we have seatbelt laws? who created the first women's shelter? etc.).And I think it is essential reading for anyone working in the field of injury prevention.

It is well-organized, well-written, and well-referenced.Although, as other reviewers have noted, it is not a comprehensive description of injury prevention initiatives, that is not what it aimed to be. Rather, it is an easily accessible, fascinating overview of many of the biggest successes in the field. Those readers whose interest is piqued by the stories Dr Hemenway shares can easily find other resources that allow a more in-depth understanding of the issues described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and motivating
While We Were Sleeping is a thoroughly enjoyable read that highlights the successes and impact of injury prevention efforts over a broad spectrum of time and places. It will be inspiring and motivating to anyone in public health, and hopefully to those considering a career in the field of injury prevention or public health in general. It is a particularly unique work in that the stories provide solid examples of the often-immeasurable impact of prevention efforts. For those of us in the field who are experiencing increasing pressure to find ways to describe and substantiate the impact of injury prevention research and practice efforts, this book reinforces the value and reward of doing so; and in knowing we are making a difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A service to the field and a good read for folks outside it
Dr. Hemenway, a professor of health policy at the Harvard School of Public Health, has done the field a real service with this book. The title comes from his favorite fairy tale, in which elves help a poor shoemaker by stitching beautiful pairs of shoes while he sleeps so that he may sell them by day and earn enough money to feed his family (and buy more leather for more shoes). The idea is that public health workers have been those unseen helpers who have assisted us all, without credit, without personal gain. Injuries have been reduced dramatically over the past century, but not by magic. Real people have labored hard to make it happen. Faculty teaching courses in injury prevention will find this a useful addition to their syllabi. If you work in public health, this book is also perfect to help your parent, partner or offspring understand what you do--and why you do it. It also may help inspire the next generation of researchers and practitioners so that we may all enjoy future gains in reducing the toll that injuries take.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone interested in public health
David Hemenway has written a gem! As a public health professor specializing in injury prevention, I LOVED this book --for multiple reasons. First, depsite more than 20 years in the field, I learned a lot.Second, though it might seem that this is just a book for injury professionals, it is much much more than that.It is a wonderful primer on the principles of public health thatevery public health student and professional should read -- as should anyone interested in understanding the approach of public health to problem solving.Third, this is also an important andexcellent introduction to the problems and progress in injury control -- a grossly under-recognized and poorly understood aspect of public health. Students of injury control should read this to gain greater familiarity with many of the accomplishments that have been made over the yearsthrough incremental changes developed via multiple innovative and determined people addressing a wide range of issues. Fourth, the book is incredibly inspirational in demonstrating how seemingly small or unrelated discoveries can create major change.Fifth, Hemenway's writing is clear, sharp and engaging. As a result, the book isvery accessible and suitable to all readers, regardless of their scientific backgrounds or familiarity with public health, yet the messages contained within it are far from simplistic. Finally, it is one of the most inspirational books I have readin a long time and will take a place on my shelf with another of my favorites -- How to Change the World. I have recommended this book to all my colleagues and plan to use it as a teaching tool. ... Read more

Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Human Factors (HF) disciplines are often regarded as subjective and nebulous. This perhaps stems from a variety and sometimes disjointed activities in the realms of education, industry and the research practices. Aviation is one of the safety-critical industries that have led the development of safety systems and human factors. However, in recent years, SMS and HF is seen to be progressing well in the road, rail and even the medical arena. "Multimodal Safety Management and Human Factors" is a wide-ranging compendium of contemporary SMS and HF approaches from the aviation, road, rail and medical domains. It brings together 27 chapters from both the academic and professional worlds that focus on applications, tools and strategies in SMS and HF; a wellspring of the practical rather than the theoretical. Safety scientists, human factor industry practitioners, change management advocates, educators and students of SMS and HF will find this book extremely relevant and challenging. ... Read more
