Book Description
Are you considering a sales or marketing career in the technology sector? Whether you're an undergraduate seeking an internship, a recent college graduate looking for your first job, an experienced professional considering a career change into the tech sector, someone already working for a technology company but interested in learning about other career options, or even if you're just curious what all these tech people do for a living, this book is for you. While there are plenty of books that will help you land a job -- how to write a resume, how to interview, and so on - this is the first book that actually defines in detail what those sales and marketing positions with tech companies are all about. It will help you decode tech industry jargon and navigate the confusing maze of tech company sales and marketing positions so that you can pinpoint the role that is right for you. Inside the book, you will learn about the 15 most common Sales and Marketing roles in tech companies, what individuals in each of these roles do day-to-day, the most important skills for each position, typical career paths for each role, and the hierarchy of job titles. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful career resource!
I am a university career counselor and a former career resource librarian. I wanted to offer my perspective because I think this book could be very helpful to those who are interested in positions related to sales and marketing within the tech industry. I'm giving this book 4.5 stars (selecting the .5 star was not an option when filling out this review).

The author begins with an overview of what it means to be in the tech sector now vs then, different work environments and types of employers, and how to match your background to various job positions. Then the author divides the rest of the book into a marketing section and a sales section. After defining and summarizing what is entailed in marketing and sales, the author dives deeply into specific job positions. For each of the 10 marketing positions and 4 sales positions, the author gives a job description, analysis of skills used, and explanation of typical career paths. Throughout the book, the author clarifies the nuances of the various positions and job titles. The last three pages is a glossary of terms.

Strengths: The information presented in the book is concise, objective, and clearly written. Getting objective information from those inside the industry can be very valuable in the exploration of one's career options. It is exactly these kinds of books that career counselors recommend to clients in their process of deciding what career to pursue.

Weaknesses: The section highlighting marketing positions is almost three times longer than the one for sales. If you are interested in only a sales career in the tech sector, this book may not offer as comprehensive of a listing as you would need. Also, it would have been helpful to have a last chapter called "Where to go from here," where the author offered suggestions of next steps to take beyond the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for new agents or seasoned!
I am an experienced agent, but bought this book after about my first year in the business.I went through a stage where I searched Amazon for all books related to the business of real estate that had good reviews and purchased them. Then it sat on my shelf for about a year or so.Things got so busy and hectic that I didn't have time to read anything!I moved out of state and started up again in my new location so I had some free time on my hands.

After reading this book, I was sorry I didn't go through it sooner.Regardless of that - it reminded me of some basic principles that got lost along the way and it was just a fantastic refresher.I HIGHLY recommend this book to new agents and it has certainly earned it's spot on my book shelf to flip through now and again.

Very few parts of the book I would consider 'out-dated' for the way we do business today - it gets back to the basics of selling and client prospecting. There was a time when agents got into this business and didn't have to learn any of it - clients fell in their lap.The world of real estate is changing and it's going back to the 'good ole days'.New agents, relish in the many scripts and suggestions this book will offer to you.

Wishing you all success....

3-0 out of 5 stars More of the same
I was somewhat disappointed in this book.I work for Century21 and had higher expectations.I found the material in this book to be a repeat of all of the other books I've read on how to be a top producer. If you REALLY, REALLY want to know how to get listings, I recommend Bill Nasby's Door to Success CD series. In fact I would recommend any of the Bill Nasby products over what I've read by people claiming to have the materials you need to be a top producer.

5-0 out of 5 stars New to real estate
Hamilton has outlned some very effective strategies.I'm making it work already. The book is worth the investment.Rewards I hope to reap: satisfied customers, seamless deals, increased sales.Full of ideas, this book is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW, Everything you need
I have never written a review on this site before. This book compelled me to do so. Mr Hamiltom breaks it down to the nitty gritty. He includes scripts, for prospecting, how to deal with FSBO's, even with no call. I have purchased many books on selling real estate but this is by far the best. Nextis "Keller's" book "TMREA". This book is newer and better in my opinion than the new D. Kennedy book.Newbie's or 3 year veteran buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
This book is an excellent tool for learning how to be successfull in real estate. Whether you have been in the business 10 years or just starting this book is very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Ultimate But Good
This book should not be used to manage your marketing campaigns but should get you thinking. It will not give you step by step answers to making your business make millions but it will explain your audience and why some methods make the difference.Remember, it's a marketing book and I am sure his intent is to make money in the process so there is advertising of other books and services. If you wrote the book it would be a good idea for you to mention your services too, so don't be so judgmental.Look for ideas and a high level understanding of the nature of selling and marketing and you will find what you are looking for from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kennedy is amazing
Fight The Good FightDan Kennedy is amazing. I own his magnetic marketing series. He is the grand daddy of the great marketers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now let's do something!
I read this book between showers on a UK beach holiday.
I found it easy to read, lots of information in an easy to understand lay out. Rather than just telling me how to do things there are many exhibits which show you how and provide lots of ideas to relate to your own business.

It has certainly given me food for thought and hopefully this will encourage me to start my own business sooner rather than later.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just For Beginners
If you are into marketing at all - especially online marketing - you know about Dan Kennedy. And you either love him or hate him. I actually love his approach and strategies because at the end of the day - they work. So when I read this book I was wondering how informative it would be. I probably should have read this book when I was starting my business because while it is pretty comprehensive etc. it is written primarily for the beginning marketer. So if you are starting your business - I recommend that you pick this book up and introduce yourself to Dan's philosophy and proven strategies for marketing your business. It's worth the read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate it is not
I am in the planning stages of a new business venture. I have never written a marketing plan before and needed some insight and advice as to what tactics work and how to write the plan itself.

This book reads like a list of useful one-liner marketing tips and examples of how the author's friends have used them.It is not a how to book on writing a marketing plan, and it does not go into much depth as far as how you might accomplish the things that he recommends.

The most annoying part of this book is that every other page contains an advertisement for you to join some 12-week commitment mailing list that the author has created. He entices you by saying that you will receive additional tips and information for 12 weeks.

HELLO!!! McFLY!!! Didn't I just buy your book so that I could learn your marketing insights?YES!So then why do you make it seem like I just paid for the teaser information, and that the good stuff is behind the curtain that requires me to become a pawn in your marketing career? My price of admission stops at the price of this book, and it should not seem like I'm only getting half of the story that I paid for!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great text book for students and experienced hotel executives
I have learned the basics of hotel business after 30 years experience in
hotel industry. A book to read over and over again when you need a new idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Results and more occupancy
This books is a must have for Hotel owners. It is very simple to complete a marketing plan and start the implementation. I readed many times and found new ways to improve the revenue and occupancy of the Hotel I manage. As a result of the initial plan 4 years ago the revenue has raised 50%. Thanks Joe Woslow.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok but not great
I agree with another reviewer that this is a naive little book. I'd go as far as calling it simplistic. The point that I like is that it is not an academic theoretical tome, but practical. It does cover some basics, but nothing really that anyone with some experience in the field would not know anyway. The book it is being sold together with, Heads In Beds: Hospitality and Tourism Marketing, which is a book that I would wholeheartedly recommend. I just recently read it (it came out not too long ago) and it is on my reference shelf. Very complete without being daunting, with great examples, illustrations and a wide range of topics. That one is worth the price, truly a gem of a hospitality marketing book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for a Motel Owner
This easy reference book of the lodging industry was a refreshing look at the oldest industry known to mankind. The author took a simple look at the industry, applying his years of knowledge, and created an avenue to re-market our product (Motels) with a fresh new look onthe technology industry. For someone who has been in the industry for a few years, the author made me re-think and re-evaluate my tarket market, especially after September 11th.He made me realize that technology really is the way to proceed with tomorrow. For my small 34 room property I have purchased a new system and have connected with the local visitors bureau. This was just the start. With the new economy looking for local travel, learning to cater to this market was a huge advantage. The author taught me the basics.I needed any advantage to proceed in this ever-changing econony.I highly recommend this book to any owner wanting to increase occupancy and take his share of the market in his nieghborhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great resource book!
As a real estate broker who deals specifically with hotels and motels, I find this to be a great book for my clients.Wether it be a 20 unit motel or a 120 unit hotel, this sales and marketing book is a great tool.I have presented this book to my clients during the initial phase, as we are looking at many different properties, to prepare them for what lies ahead and so that they can learn how to maximize the potential of their property to gain a wide customer base.I have also given the book to clients when we "close" the property so that they can learn different ways to maximize their income. Even when the clients have management experience this book can help with new ideas.I have received nothing but positive feedback from my clients on how this book has helped them and their success is my success! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading
As one of the first online marketing books I'd read, I got a lot out of it at the time.

Even though it was published in 2005, there are still plenty of nuggets of value to any novice looking to learn.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am an attorney, real estate broker, investor, trainer, and author of another unique and highly readable book on real estate investing that can also be found here on Amazon -- The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses: The Foolproof Roadmap to Real Estate Riches Without the Risks and Hassles of Landlording.Unlike many real estate investing books, it is written to be a genuine "How To" book that "takes you by the hand" and walks you through a step-by-step process for getting started in real estate investing -- investors across the country are giving it rave reviews. The book also includes sample leases, forms, and checklists, so that you can actually go out and implement the investing strategy it teaches as soon as you're done reading. You might want to check out the companion CD too -- The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses (Combo Audio/Data CD): Author's Audio Commentary Plus Downloadable 32-page Marketing Manual, Checklists, Spreadsheets, and Forms.

A related program that's well worth checking out is:

I could not put this book down. It's packed with information to help jump start any internet venture--even mine.

I recommend you purchase this book. If you find any articles that deeply resonate with you, go to that website and review the product. Might just been that missing part of your program.

So, in retrospect--I'm glad I got this book.

All of these people had a "Vision" which may not have been shared by others.
These people developed a Plan and most importantly, they acted on it.
They turned their Dreams into Reality by hard work.

There is NO easy way out unless you win the lottery and then statistically speaking within 2 years you will be in mega debt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chock Full O Insight
We all have causes. These are the good things in life that make us human and happy. Most times, we want to do the right thing for the right reason. Often this involves spending our time and talent - not to mention hard earned money - for our cause. Robin Hood Marketing presents a keen look at the moments where we make the decision that a cause is just and that it deserves our attention. What I really enjoy about the book is the lessons it teaches in sharing our passions. The most important lesson I took from the book? It is the power of telling a story. The author grabs the reader from the very first chapter. Second most important? Its not about the cause itself...its about the people who find it valuable. In other words, its not about "me"...its about "you".

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious marketing wisdom in plain language
The author has done a great job in distilling the marketing principles of the for-profit sector and applying them to the non-profit world. This is not a light over easy marketing for dummies book but is written by someone with real expertise and experience. That said, it is a not complex read and provides clear principles, compelling examples and great side-interviews with other non-profit marketers.
It is focused more often than not on social cause-related marketing which not all non-profits are involved to the depth described in this book. However the principles and practices described are applicable to all non-profit environments. An excellent read and a valuable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for every non-profit marketer
The practical advice in this book, told so elegantly and supported with fascinating case studies and interviews, makes it a "must have" for every non-profit marketer. It's one of those books you highlight, turn down pages to come back to, and put front and center on your bookshelf. One of the takeaways that has helped me see a new way to connect with our non-profit's audiences: "the goal is to show targets new ways to get what they already want or value."In other words, make it easy to see how our cause connects with what they already value, not necessarily educate them all about our mission.

5-0 out of 5 stars Robs Rich Wisdom from For-Profits to Help Your Nonprofit
Katya Andresen has done the nonprofit sector a favor and put nonprofit and Social marketing concepts into plain English everyone can understand. Two quick helps from Andresen: 1. Move your organization beyond the big picture of your mission and focus on getting people to take specific action. 2. Stop talking to yourself in your marketing, align your communication with your audience's values and you will see greater response. This book lays out the "Robin Hood rules" for using big money marketing principles and turning them into affordable practical wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Robin Hood Marketing
There are hundreds of useful marketing books out there, but few authors have cut through the clutter to give practical strategic advise to non-profits in as effective way as Katya Andresen. Her experiences have led her to come up with simple to follow principles, that are backed up by excellent examples by a variety of experts in the field. Much of it is "common sense" put down on paper. The easy to read format and "real world" examples combine to keep you reading.

If you are looking for for a book that provides practical information for many types of organizations, especially ones that have little experience in marketing or public relations, this is it. The book would also be helpful for more established organizations to review to help them with strategic planning and cut through the clutter of outmoded thinking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MANUAL for Creating a Company
Wow!I kept looking at the cover as I was reading this book. I can't believe the author is so young. (22) Shockingly helpful content.I have started two companies, but have not built anything close to what Ryan has done.I wish I had had this book 20 years ago.Grown men can learn from this.I am inspired after reading this book. His college decision shows amazing insight for his age.If you don't need it, have your kids read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly detailed. Everything you need to know to be successful in business.
Ryan is one of my buddies on the popular site, LinkedIn.I knew he was writing a book about his experience starting and growing a business but.. WOW... Ryan is the next Bill Gates. His recipe is boundless ambition, tech savvy and finding real problems to solve. I've been in marketing nearly 20 years and have built companies from zero to IPO, but my jaw dropped when I read this book.He knows things about growing a successful company that people 3x his age haven't figured out yet.

He has a gift and he's shared it with all of us step-by-step, including checklists.

Even if you work for someone else, this book will make a you a better employee... but after reading it, you won't want to make money for other people anymore.

I wish Amazon had six stars.I read a lot of books and this is the only one that I'd give six stars to.I'm that impressed.

Buy it.Buy it now. Read it twice and take action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read for Young Entrepreneurs
If you are interested in starting your own business - for any reason whatsoever - you ought to pick up a copy of this book. Unlike other young entrepreneurs, you simply can't chalk Ryan's success up to luck.

Now in the 3rd revision of Zero to One Million, Ryan is writing about - yes - the 3rd business he has built to a million in sales.

What Ryan is shy about saying is that in at least the previous two companies they hit a million in sales in the FIRST YEAR! And iContact is growing at an even faster rate.

Ryan has meticulously recounted what he has done, and what you need to do, to find similar success.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the perfect book for an entrepreneur
I have thought about starting my own business for ages and needed a book which would help me with ideas and provide motivation. And I need a lot of motivation because I have ADD. We ADDer's are known for becoming entrepreneurs and so I thought what the heck I will read this book and see if I can be one. Ryan doesn't just write, because he is a good writer, he writes because he has been there and done that. Okay, I might not have started my own business, but I feel as though I have followed in his footsteps by writing my own story of what I have done to succeed and believe others can do. Ryan's book is a Great book and if you would be interested in knowing what I wrote about, thanks in part to reading Ryan's book, you can find it here on Amazon too:

One Boy's Struggle: A Memoir: Surviving Life with Undiagnosed ADD

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all entrepreneurs
This is an absolutely awesome book.Ryan has a knack for conveying complex information in a very readable and understandable way.He provides numerous tangible examples as he takes the reader on an exciting journey.

In his book, Ryan peals back the curtain and shows the reader what it's really like to build a company from scratch. The glory, the hard work, the joy, the downright perseverance, it's all in there. Whether you are at the stage of sleeping in the office because you have no where else to go, or are out raising venture capital - Ryan has a story that's relevant to your situation.

Best of all, Ryan is a true entrepreneur. He builds companies for the joy of building them, not for the money. In his book Ryan stresses that money should be a byproduct of creating your company not the goal of it. Wise words indeed.

If you are an entrepreneur, or think you might want to be, you owe it to yourself to read this book. You'll be glad you did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Substandard reading- Not worth your money
This book sounds like a sales person yelling in your ear. The author is NOT an experienced photographer, nor does the author offer any resonable, useful tips. Very outdated material also, from 1995-1999! Its not helpful for the serious digital or medium format photographer or even for an amateur. Its simply a waste of money. Amazon has better books for serious photographers for sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best photography marketing book I've ever read.
I really like this book a lot, and would recommend it to ANYone who is interested in learning more about photography marketing; more specifically, the different types of marketing.

It's written by a marketing specialist who works with photographers on marketing their own businesses. As a result, the book doesn't have many pictures, or a very interesting layout, but then again, it is a marketing book. I liked the testimonials given by professional photographers. They were very pertinent to the information provided, and gave the book more depth and application to real-life situations.

I would like this book a bit better if I were more interested in marketing, or if it made marketing sound a little more fun. It also wouldn't have hurt to add more photographs and color to the book. I'm a visual learner, and I think that may have helped me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Quality book, easy to read and understand
Even a novice with only a little bit of understanding of how the marketing and business aspects of life work, will find this book easy to understand. Its stragit forward approach with real life examples and situations makes me understand it and look back on the information for later.

The price of the book with the photographers market 2005 book makes it a deal!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK information
This book has some good information, but I was expecting a lot more.I would recommend "The Business of Studio Photography" by Lilley instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and sound guidance to help you go Pro!
This book offers sound practical advice that will help you take your business to the next level.Sure... you may be a great photographer, but effective marketing will get your work in front of the right people.

This book will help you achieve this goal. I occasionally re-read it and it's invaluable. ... Read more

    Product Description
Six Sigma is a highly flexible methodology and tool set, but few practitioners have successfully transferred the early successes Six Sigma enjoyed in manufacturing to sales and marketing. The opportunities to use it exist, but the expertise on how to apply it is lacking. This book provides step by step instructions on how to use data and measures to tackle common business challenges. An analysis of the territory planning process provides tools and techniques to improve the effectiveness of sales forces that suboptimize their efforts by calling on the wrong customers. It shows sales leadership how to use readily available data to ensure that the "right" customers are receiving the attention they need. It also quantifies the real cost of spending time with customers that are not improving the bottom line.A historical analysis of promotions takes the guesswork out of developing future sales campaigns. It does this by taking the time to define a specific goal and developing metrics that will allow side by side comparisons of past promotions. Once armed with this knowledge, future promotions stand a greater chance of achieving their goals.Other chapters cover projects on improving product launch sales, improving the effectiveness of the sales rep/sales manager field ride process, and sale representative hiring profiles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hit's the mark with key messages
Having been a long time marketer for over 30 years and a self-described "student" of the business, it's easy to feel as though I've seen it all. Ms. McMurtry's book changed that for me. For once, it's apparent that someone in the marketing field "gets it". The strong emphasis on emotional marketing, a key component to why people buy; the emphasis on lifetime value of the customer; the real life examples of the wide range of topics she covers, should be required reading for anyone in a marketing function. It tells us point blank that if you are not in business to create emotional ties and experiential relationships in the marketing you do, you're not likely to grow your business--and that's why we are in business, isn't it? Thank you Ms. McMurtry for covering so much valuable ground in an easily readable volume.

Running a private music studio can be challenging, especially when it comes to the business end of things.Even though I have no employees, I found Ms. McMurtry's book immensely helpful.I especially appreciated the tips on identifying and connecting with my best customer.Learning how to write a marketing plan to support what I wanted from my business enabled me to keep my focus. The book helped me attract the type of students that best fit my needs while running my studio as an efficient, profit generating entity.I highly recommend it to sole practitioners, like myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on designing a channel program
It's an easy, quick read and sticks to all the pertinent information without adding unnecessary complexities. The author speaks from experience of the ins and outs of designing and managing the channel. He is able to cover strategy, tactics and theory as well as get down to the nitty gritty personal relationships and politics of being a "channel master".

If you are designing a channel program, this books is an excellent place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about distribution channels !
This book is a rare example on how it is easy to teach the concepts, show practical examples, and summarize everything in 250 pages without relying on unnecessary phrases and words that just repeat the same idea again and again and increase the size of the book to 1000 pages. The author provides detailed explanations on the structure and functioning of distribution channels and depicts a way to effectively build a succesful channel from scratch. He goes beyond the basic concepts to show additional and important information on antitrust laws and international distribution and competition.

I would recommend reading this book and keeping it as one of your reference books to consult whenever you're up to consider changes in the distribution system that arise because of competitive pressures, changes in customer behavior, or new product launches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Marketing Book Without The Jargon
I spent hours trying to find a book that was specific to the industry I worked in - Business to Business/Industrial.There was nothing available in local stores. After finding, ordering and receiving The Marketing Managers Handbook I am convinced that if you do work in this industry, it is the best investment you could make for the marketing department of your company.I bought copies for everyone in the Marketing Team and it has really helped them implement and share ideas on a local basis.

Funnily enough, the book even cited examples of marketing completed by our US parent company - that's how specific this book was!Love it and recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you could only buy one marketing book ...
... this should be the one you get. Eric Gagnon has packed more information into this book than any other marketing book I've seen. It's not filled with tons of theory or high level strategy. Instead, The Marketing Manager's Handbook literally helps you roll up your sleeves and get started.

You'll find excellent information and hands-on guidance in the following areas:
    - Determining the appropriate marketing mix
    - Effective messaging that conveys the "right" positioning
    - Creating marketing deliverables
    - Planning & executing direct mail & advertising campaigns
    - Web site planning, design & launch
    - Leveraging the internet to grow your business
    - Maximizing your trade show opportunities
    - and much more.

You get more good advice in EACH chapter of The Marketing Manager's Handbook than you generally get in an entire book by other authors on this topic.

If you're ready to get your marketing engine in gear, get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I have found on Marketing Tactics
Most marketing books want to deal with big picture topics like strategic planning, competitive analysis and market research.Speaking from experience, these are topics that take up a small percentage of the time for most real-life marketers at B2B corporations. Most of my time is spend on implementing marketing tactics to increase the number of sales leads that my company recieves. This book is the best book I have found for providing real-life advice on how to successfully implement the major marketing tactics that you should be using to increase sales at your company.I have been looking for a book like this for years.
