Product Description
An eagerly exploiting people in an easily exploited country, we are only too apt to live on the capital of all our natural resources. We are also in the habit of developing one thing at the expense of everything else connected with it. The value of these other things often remains unrecognised till too late. For instance, reckless railways burn forests which ensure a constant flow of water for irrigation, navigation, power plant, and fish, besides providing wood for timber and shelter for bird and beast. The presence of a construction gang generally means the needless extermination of every animal in the neighbourhood. The presence of mills means the needless absence of fish. And the presence of ill-governed cities means the needless and deadly pollution of water that never was meant for a sewer. The idea is the same in each disgraceful case. It is, simply, to snatch whatever is most coveted for the moment, with least trouble to one's self, and at no matter what expense to Nature and the future of man. The cant phrase is only too well known--"Lots more where that came from". Exploitation is destroying now what civilisation will long to restore hereafter. This is lamentably true about material things. It is truer still about the higher than material things. And it is truest of all about both the material and higher values of wild life, which we administer as if we were the final spendthrift heirs and not trustees.

Excerpt: Hillside Animal Sanctuary, based in Frettenham, Norwich, is the United Kingdom's largest home for animals removed from their owners by the direct action of animal rights activists. The vegan-run sanctuary is staffed by volunteers and funded entirely on public donations. The sanctuary was established by Wendy Valentine and its patron is actor Martin Shaw. Valentine formed the sanctuary in 1995 after she witnessed the farming of battery hens, and has since helped and campaigned for and on behalf of animals. She is quoted as saying Hillside's aim is to: Hillside is now home to over 900 rescued animals including horses, donkeys, cows, bulls, goats, sheep, ducks and chickens. and claims to be "one of the UK's most successful campaigning organisations for the animals' cause." Hillside has an animal cruelty investigation unit that acts directly on tip-offs from members of the public. The unit provides video evidence that often leads to prosecution in cases of animal cruelty. They have carried out many undercover operations to highlight cases of alleged animal abuse within the British farming industry. Some of the more well known cases include in 2006, involvement in the successful prosecution of two employees of Bernard Matthews Beck Farm in Felthorpe, near Norwich, who both admitted ill treatment of animals after they were secretly filmed by a member of the Hillside unit beating turkeys with metal poles held like baseball bats. The case was brought to court by the RSPCA a...http://booksllc.net/?id=6411194 ... Read more

Excerpt: Dinnington Comprehensive School -The school was built in the grounds of Throapham Manor, and was opened by Sir Percy Jackson (chair of the West Riding Local Education Authority) in 1935 as Dinnington Senior Boys and Dinnington Senior Girls. It consisted of a single timber building divided into girls' and boys' departments. In 1938 the building was extended and a separate gymnasium added. In 1957, the two halves merged to form the coeducational Dinnington Secondary Modern, and at that point there were already plans for a further merger with the secondary technical element of the neighbouring Dinnington Chelmsford Technical College to create the area's first comprehensive school. Product Description
More than anything else, this is a book about love. Written by the founder of Catskill Animal Sanctuary, a haven for abused farm animals, this book depicts a world in which distinctions between "human" and "animal" are meaningless, a world where care and affection trump years of neglect and abuse. You will hear deeply moving and heartfelt accounts of animals like Dino, an old toothless pony who survived a fire and became the first member of the CAS community, and Cinnamon, a recent addition, who arrived timid and thin, with a bullet hole in her left eye. You will meet Rambo, the sheep who informs the staff when an animal needs assistance; Babe, the 900-pound pig; Paulie, the former cockfighting rooster who eats lunch with the humans and accompanies the director around town on her errands; and dozens of other horses, ponies, cows, goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, rabbits, and a variety of birds, all larger than life. Side by side with them is a staff of hilarious, irreverent, but always loving humans, for whom every animal life-even that of an injured frog rushed to the vet for emergency surgery-has merit. These tales will profoundly-and joyously-change your life. ... Read more

Product Description
But though the press has been of the greatest service in the matter of publicity the principal additions to a knowledge of the question have come from individuals. Naturalists, sportsmen and leaders in public life have all helped both by advice and encouragement. Quotations from a number of letters are published at the end of this supplement. The most remarkable characteristic of all this private correspondence and public notice, as well as the spoken opinions of many experts, is their perfect agreement on the cardinal point that we are wantonly living like spendthrifts on the capital of our wild life, and that the general argument of the _Address_ is, therefore, incontrovertibly true.

The gist of some of the most valuable advice is, that while the _Address_ is true so far as it goes, its application ought to be extended to completion by including the leasehold system, side by side with the establishment of sanctuaries and the improvement and enforcement of laws.

Such an extension takes me beyond my original limits. Yet, both for the sake of completeness and because this system is a most valuable means toward the end desired by all conservers of wild life, I willingly insert leaseholds as the connecting link between laws and sanctuaries.

But before trying to give a few working suggestions on laws, leaseholds and sanctuaries, and, more particularly still, before giving any quotations from letters, I feel bound to point out again, as I did in the _Address_ itself, that my own personality is really of no special consequence, either in giving the suggestions or receiving the letters. I have freely picked the brains of other men and simply put together the scattered parts of what ought to be a consistent whole.

Product Description
Written after retiring from the sanctuary, it is being published as a promise to a very special boxer dog 'Elsa' who was his savour in difficult times. Sadly 'Elsa' is now with the other doggies in the sky but hopefully by writing this others will see that animals and dogs especially can be mans/woman's best friend.

We as humans have responsibility to animals yet this book shows that in even a country supposedly full of animal lovers there are still cruelty and neglect. In the world as a whole it is even worse yet all most domestic animals want is companionship and shelter.

The author underwent a life-changing situation when in his early thirties. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer but fortunately for him he survived and now over the age of sixty-five seems as healthy as anyone. This change made him reassess 'life', what is it for? Being a businessman he continued in his small way and was successful for over thirty years but that in itself was not enough. As a result he and his former wife decided to help animals mainly domestic in some small way leading to the setting up of the animal sanctuary. The business aspect helped support this and later he advised others not so fortunate into going into business. When retiring from advising he had helped over 12,000 people from all walks of life and, many on the lowest rung of society into a new life by working through HRH Prince Charles charities and government-sponsored schemes.

Now mainly living in Thailand where there is also a dog problem far in excess of the UK he is trying with difficulty to help where he can. ... Read more

Chapters: Philippine Tarsier Foundation. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 126. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Philippine Tarsier Foundation, Incorporated (PTFI) is a non-profit, non-stock corporation based in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines, established in 1996 to conserve, promote research and establish a sanctuary for the Philippine Tarsier. It is an entirely private sector initiative, but has strong support from two leading organizations in conservation and eco-tourism, namely the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Tourism (DOT). To ensure the continued existence of the Philippine Tarsier, the Foundation is attempting to bring tourism to the province of Bohol in a way that is ecologically friendly to the Philippine Tarsier. Organized by local businessmen in Bohol, an island of 1.2 million people, the foundation runs a 7.4-hectare (20.7-acre) sanctuary or forest reservation, nestled within a larger protected forest where about a thousand other Philippine Tarsier are believed to live, protected by a permanent logging ban. At the reservation, visitors can observe the Philippine Tarsier in its natural habitat, in an enclosure, or conduct research at the Philippine Tarsier Research and Development Center. Here, researchers fitting temporary radio collars helped establish the animals' breeding and eating habits as well as their territorial ranges. Under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the DENR signed on April 27, 1997, the Philippine Tarsier Foundation, Incorporated has the following missions: to establish a forest reserve in the island of Bohol which shall serve as the sanctuary of the Philippine tarsier; to protect and manage the tarsier sanctuary through the active participation of local communities; to establish and maintai...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7819019 ...
