3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
Spend over ten hours going over the book as soon as I got, found it very well written and filled with simple examples. I have been using SAS for two years including few SAS functions like time and date, statistical and others. Good book for beginner programmer like me.
Don't know how useful this would be for people with extensive SAS experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
I have been using SAS for about 18 months and I have found this book to be the best reference in our arsenal. The multiple examples provided with the code explanations set this book apart from references I have found online or through SAS.com.I found the Chapters 1 and 2 essential to my work with string variables (in my case, mostly address information) but all of the other chapters have been useful.Once you outgrow the SAS Primer, this is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
An excellent book. For each function, the author provides, not just explanations, but also complete examples and mini-programs, with inputs, code, and actual results. The best resource on SAS functions that I am aware of.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy book for those with SAS Experience
I used this book the first few hours that I received it.This is not a stand alone book for those that want to learn SAS functions.I think this text is best suited for people who use SAS regularly and needs a handy reference while programming.Skimming through the book would also provide the reader with an understanding of what functions SAS is capable of doing. However, it is highly likely that you will not use all of the programs, most of the programs are pretty useful especially to those that are required to manipulate data in SAS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Desk Reference
This review covers only how well the book helps the user manage the product under question. Many people learn SAS on the job rather than for formal education; this book meets that audience's needs quite nicely.

This book does well what is supposed to do - be a handy desk reference for SAS functions, according to the functions that exist in SAS9.Part of the author's mission is to bring users up to date on the new functions so that they do not labor with a horse-driven carriage when the equivalent of the automobile has arrived. This is particularly true for the new (as of 2005) string and regular expression functionality provided in SAS9.

Furthermore, By providing goodusage examples, he also illustrates not only the definitions of the various functions, but also helps the user select the right one for the job at hand. It's a great book to have at one's side while using SAS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kick Out the Jams
Expert SAS programmer Burlew provides various techniques for interpreting and preventing programming errors in this hefty, (and expensive) technical book from SAS Publishing. While there is a great deal of useful information, the book awkwardly combines the simple and the advanced. For example, chapters 1 and 6 explain automatically generated error messages in SAS logfiles.A great many of these errors are either self-explanatory, unnecessary to understand in the detail presented here, or may not be included in your own program logs.Still, it is very helpful to have these listed and explained in a compact form.

The value of three other chapters will also depend on the experience of the user and the type of software used. One very long chapter is devoted to debugging errors in macros; if you don't use macros, these chapters are of limited use.Another chapter,"Debugging SAS DATA Steps with the DATA Step Debugger," is apparently only for SAS for Windows software. Furthermore, the correct programming is superimposed on very small pictures resembling Windows screens; it is frustrating to read the resulting tiny font size.

Chapter 3, "Debugging SAS Language Programs," is the most helpful one for the intermediate level user. One of the difficulties in SAS and other languages is that a program may run and produce output, but contain undetected errors.Burlew explains a variety of clever options statements and SAS language statements that improve your ability to detect logical, syntactic, and semantic errors.Another nice feature is an Appendix that describes how to build the data sets that are used as exemplars throughout the book.

Chapters are as follows:

1 .Understanding the Types of Errors in SAS Programs, p.24
2. Reading the SAS Log and Interpreting SAS Messages, p.29
3. Debugging SAS Language Programs, p.45
4. Debugging SAS DATA Steps with the DATA Step Debugger, p. 109
5. Debugging SAS Macro Language, p. 139
6. Base SAS Messages, p. 207
7. Macro Facility Messages, p. 293

Two appendices begin on page 325, and an index on page 345.I can recommend this book for experienced users, especially those who know and use macros. (NOTE: Burlew has written a book titled "SAS Macro Programming Made Easy" that may be helpful.)Another guide that will help prevent data set programming errors is the somewhat easier, "Cody's Data Cleaning Techniques Using SAS Software," by Ron Cody.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alexey
Good book. It actually repeats macro references in 'SAS help' with some additions. So you can find all this information in 'SAS help' but I think that to have a book for your library is more convnient. It explains quite well how macro processor works behind the screen. This book contains more than enough information on various macro functions and it can help to prepare well to SAS advanced exam (macro part). I gave it 4 stars because some parts of the book are really difficult to understnd if you don't have previous experince with macro language. I recommend this book only to advanced SAS users. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
This book is okay, probably wouldn't buy if I would have flipped through it first, but ordered online.Too many examples, not enough explanation on the actual examples.Alot of examples were redundant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preety Good Book
I have read most of the chapters of this book. I certainly advise anyone who would like to learn SAS SQL or improve her/his SAS SQL skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why spend the money?
I purchased this book one year ago under the influence of the high ratings here, but I didn't get chance to finish it until last week. After comparing this book with the SAS SQL manual (free online PDF file available at SAS website), I came to one question, why bother to buy this book? The book is not a copy of the SAS manual, but it is written in a strikingly similar pattern yet it provides LESS information than the SAS manual; on the contrary, the SAS manual gives you more materials, more examples, better narratives, clearer explanations than this full-of-typo book.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy to read and follow; better for PROC SQL begginers
If you are new to PROC SQL, this is the right book. It covers all the basic queries, complex queries in simple content, some troubleshooting, and a little bit of efficiency. The layout throughout the book is very easy to read and follow. All examples contain PROC SQL codes, results, appropriate explanation, as well as part of SAS LOG and comparison in some examples. This book might be a little basic to power PROC SQL users. But compared to SAS SQL procedure user's guide, it is way better to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick way to learn SQL
An experienced SAS programmer, I used the many helpful examples in this book to learn a lot about PROC SQL in just a few days.(I skipped the text.)I trust the few typos and obscure passages will be cleared up in a subsequent edition.I thought the sections on normalization and integrity constraints were skimpy. The book has also been favorably reviewed in The American Statistician 2005, vol. 59, no. 4, pp. 350

1-0 out of 5 stars Utterly and Completely useless
This is without a doubt the lousiest, laziest, most poorly-written book I have ever tried to use on SAS. It only left me more confused.

The approach is a "survey" approach, ie, presented as a summary of the possible commands you can use, without an explanation of syntax, structure or programming ideas. This is clearly meant for computer programmers looking to pick up a little bit of info on SAS. Serious analysts will find nothing but chapter after chapter of mutant schlock-dribble.

1-0 out of 5 stars A lot of verbage, not much meat
If you are out to learn SAS, this book is probably not your best choice. If know SAS reasonably well and want a reference book, this book may or may not be for you. Very little examples of program code and output displays with too many subtitles, that do not flow well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Choppy and hard to read
My opinion is that this book is choppy, cryptic and hard to read.It has a strange format where the information is devided up into little blurbs, that made little if any sense.I would humbly recommend that the author take a writing course or two. ... Read more
