5-0 out of 5 stars LOTTA RULES!
I could not wait to get this book, I am a huge fan of Lotta's designs and books. This book is no exception.Full of inspirational ideas and beautiful photographs, this book recharged my creative juices just as all of Lotta's books have!

5-0 out of 5 stars My New Favorite Book!
Since first discovering Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing, I have adored everything Lotta!I pored over the pictures in her previous books less to learn how to make items and more to glean home decorating and living ideas. What I really wanted was the chance to hear in Lotta's own words how she blends old and new pieces in a way that seems effortlessly comfortable, fresh, and modern.Lotta's new book, Handmade Living: A Fresh Take on Scandanavian Style, is just such a peek into her home and life!Every page, picture, story is a glimpse into her style, and as I finished reading, I felt I had visited the apartment of a friend who is kind enough to share her creative ideas--as well as a cinnamon bun (recipe included). Most of all this book has become my new "favorite book" because it is so authentically real. This book inspires me to embrace the home in which I live, adding my own touches to make it uniquely my own.Thank you, Lotta! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
The recipes in this book are very easy to follow and the end result turns out fantastic! The book uses the American, not metric system to measure recipes. There is also a wide variety of recipes so there is something for everyone. I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good collection Finnish Foods
This is a good book with all the favorite meals thatFinnish Americans grew up with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just like Grandma's cooking...
I have tried for years to duplicate my Finnish grandmother's cooking.Asking for her recipes is hopeless...in her mind she just throws things in a pan and they come out that tasty.(She is constantly telling me it is not worth my time because her only secret is that Finnish cows, chickens, and fish are much happier and treated nicer than American animals, and therefore taste better.)This book is the first (and only, so far) Finnish recipe book I've found that carries many of our family's traditional recipes. It is easy to follow and I have had success with every recipe I have tried.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uff Da!
I saw this book randomly in the children's book section of my local bookstore and it caught my eye.Being Norwegian, pretty much everything with "Norway!" or the like catches my eye.

I started browsing through the book, and it's beautifully designed! There are a few different sections on traditional Norwegian families and how they do their cooking, some utensils you may want to invest in while using Norwegian recipes, and commonly used ingredients - such as cardamom and white pepper. All in all, very informative!

It also has beautiful, color images of almost all of the recipes in the book. So, while the recipes are very useful and tasty, the books itself is nice as a decorative piece in my kitchen!

Great book to give to a Norwegian friend or someone who's feeling a little adventurous in their cooking. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't judge by it's cover... but you knew that.
On the cover is a huge jar filled with fish chunks, carrot and onion slices and frankly I thought it looked disgusting. However my interest in my Scandinavian heritage and hope for a new kolachi recipie drove me to open the book anyway.Inside this book is actually a good deal of interesting history and cultural narration.I particularly enjoyed the illustrations on "how to Skoal with style" (it's a toast follwed by a shot of alchohol from a cute stemmed glass). The recipies are easy to follow and some are laid out with step by step illustrations. In the back is a useful glossary regarding various Scandinavian terms and words. There are also two Indexes in the back which are very well laid out.The recipies are not adapted for health, but you can always adapt them for a more modern diet.Although I did not find a recipie for Kolachi, I did find a good Danish Pastry recipie and a yummy rhubarb compote.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and engrossing
How I would wish that Time-Life could revamp this series and rerelease it for anyone foodie who would want this classic series!

Cooking of Scandinavia is like all the other books in this series- full of the food history of the region, filled with basic and classic recipes and willing to take the reader on an armchair tour of the whole country. The recipes are easy to follow and easy to buy ingredients for. Unless you would wish to try roasted reindeer marrow from Lapland or some rare form of Aquavit [You have to love the panache of a young Max Von Sydow as he downs his glass!]

This book is a must for anybody who wants a true, cook's book. Not some flimsy pop-culture look into techno-food.
I highly recommend this offering! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of proportion
The pictures are good and the recipes intriguing. However, my results so far have been disappointing.First I made the Christmas Gingerbread, which turned out flat-tasting, as if the proportions were wrong.Perhaps that's how they are supposed to taste?

Next I tried the Vyborg Pretzels. The amount of flour specified was far too little.I had to add at least double, if not triple, the amount to obtain a very soft but finally workable dough. Then I waited for it to rise. The recipe says to wait an hour or until it has doubled in volume. I had to wait 12 hours!Eventually I finished making them and they look and taste fine - if you like saffron in extremely high doses. The recipe calls for a full teaspoon of saffron. Quite an investment! So you understand why I persevered with the flour additions rather than pitching the whole mess.

I want to try Karelian Hot-Pot next.If that doesn't turn out, you'll find my copy on eBay.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book with delicious uncomplicated recipes
If you enjoy Scandinavian or Eastern European foods, you will love this book. Every recipe is beautifully illustrated. I have made the beef and mushroom loaf, the potato casserole and the Finnish bagels. All were hits with four generations of my family and not at all complicated. They also looked great, just like the photographs in the book. I plan to make most of the recipes. They are all very appetizing. Even the fancier foods suitable for company are not too time consuming. The text at the beginning which introduces one to Finnish customs and food is also very interesting to read. You won't regret buying this book. ... Read more
