School violence, from simple bullying to murder, is on the rise. Therefore, Kathy Sexton-Radek has addressed the need for a straightforward, in-depth discussion of school violence in this edited collection. She has compiled essays from an impressive group of authors including both academics and practitioners. Together, they present a comprehensive view of the many types of school violence and how to prevent it. This book will serve as an invaluable tool for teachers, parents, counselors, school administrators, and psychologists dealing with violent children and their victims.

This volume is divided into three major sections, the first of which provides a conceptual foundation to help the reader understand school violence. Section two presents programmatic strategies for the prevention of violence. And, finally, the third section offers a chapter by Sexton-Radek on conflict resolution and several useful appendices, one of which is a listing of web resources for violence prevention programming.

This book reflects a wealth of hands on experience doing the work that makes safe, fair and responsive schools a possibility for everyone. It is a very "how to" book. Safe School Ambassadors is an essential guide for school administrators, counselors, teachers, parents, and youth organization leaders. It challenges the current "outside-in" thinking?that keeping schools safe is accomplished primarily by adults through heightened security and stricter policies. It makes the case for a complementary ?inside-out? approach that taps the power of students to change the social norms of a school culture in order to stop bullying and violence. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, compassionate approach to school safety...
Inspiring, I give it two thumbs up for offering a sane point of view about minimizing bully and violence in schools, while staying sensitive to the young people at the same time.

I also went to the Safe School Ambassador website and saw a 4-minute NBC Today Show clip about this program. The clip gives a good summary of the authors' point of view, and you also get to hear some unscripted responses from young people who have been through the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable and Timely Guide
Every school administrator should take the time to read this valuable, well-researched guide to the problem and solutions to the issue of mistreatment in schools. The authors have made a strong case for student empowerment, and have given school personnel the practical tools to make their schools safer and more welcoming for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changing the Norms
The most important aspect of this book is that the strategies suggested PREVENT mistreatment, thus changing the norms. As a facilitator of adults ordered by court to take anger management classes, I would like to see more of this taking place. That way we are up stream solving the problem rather than downstream picking up the bodies.I have shared much of the information in the book in parenting classes I led.Students found the information extremely useful. To my knowledge several of them did go back to their children's schools and obtained information on how the school was addressing bullying. It's the ripple effect.Take the time to read the book and then make a difference in your community.I'd love to work myself out of a job.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful program
As the parent of a girl who was a mistreated in middle school, I have often wondered what can be done to bring about change for students like my daughter. I know from my own experience, that top down discipline does not provide for a safe school climate. If it did, my many calls to the school about how my daughter was being treated, would have brought about change.
What I have learned from this insightful, compelling book is that by empowering the students, we can build safer schools, from the inside-out, an obvious, and simple solution. Research based and well written, Safe School Ambassadors:Harnessing Student Power, is a must read for Professionals and Parents alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding and Important Work
I have worked with young people for over 30 years as a theatre educator and drama therapist. The problem of schools being unsafe and uncivil places in which to learn is growing around the globe. In addition to providing a clear overview of the problem, I believe the authors express quite eloquently the key to the solution: youth empowerment. It is through relationship that young people develop their behavioral repertoire and, as is expressed in this book, "Outside-In" approaches that focus on rules, monitoring, and enforcement cannot effectively change the social norms that make it O.K. for students to mistreat each other.Kudos to the authors on creating such a valuable resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all schools and teachers (and parents, too)
Kiwi Magazine Review:
There are many new excellent titles on bullying on the shelves but this one stands alone with its crystal clear information presented in a reader-friendly format, awash with worksheet pages and resources. The author takes the reader from explaining bullying at different ages through correcting problems and creating a culture of civility at the school. Product Description

In a society increasingly dominated by zero-tolerance thinking, Punishing Schools argues that our educational system has become both the subject of legislative punishment and an instrument for the punishment of children. William Lyons and Julie Drew analyze the connections between state sanctions against our schools (the diversion of funding to charter schools, imposition of unfunded mandates, and enforcement of dubious forms of teacher accountability) and the schools' own infliction of punitive measures on their students-a vicious cycle that creates fear and encourages the development of passive and dependent citizens.

"Public schools in the United States are no longer viewed as a public good. On the contrary, they are increasingly modeled after prisons, and students similarly have come to mirror the suspicions and fears attributed to prisoners. Punishing Schools is one of the most insightful, thoughtful, and liberating books I have read on what it means to understand, critically engage, and transform the present status and state of schools from objects of fear and disdain to institutions that value young people, teachers, and administrators as part of a broader vision of social justice, freedom, and equality. William Lyons and Julie Drew have done their homework and provide all the necessary elements for understanding and defending schools as public spheres that are foundational to a democracy. This book should be required reading for every student, teacher, parent, and concerned citizen in the United States. In the end, this book is not just about saving schools, it is also about saving democracy and offering young people a future that matters."
--Henry Giroux, McMaster University

"This is an important book . . . a distinctive contribution. The authors move back and forth convincingly between the micropolitics of school discipline and the 'politics writ large' of the liberal left and the utopian right. The result is an expansive, idealistic, and well-grounded book in the spirit of the very best of social control literature."
--Stuart Scheingold, Professor Emeritus, Political Science, University of Washington

William Lyons is Director of Center for Conflict Management and Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Akron.

Julie Drew is Associate Professor of English, University of Akron.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be the bible for high schools in America...
I relied heavily on this book while I was writing my thesis. I have even considered writing Lyons and Drew to thank them personally for conducting such an important study. Punishing Schools asks the tough questions in today's world where one can "Never be too safe." They look specifically at a suburban high school to subtly ask the question "What are we really afraid of? And what are the long-term effects of our (often unfounded) fears?"

If you are looking for a book that will take you into today's high school in search of the issues students, teachers, and parents face on a daily basis, I have found few other books more accurate than Punishing Schools. Lyons and Drew attempt to maintain as neutral ground as possible, but you will find them falling on the side of personal rights and liberties over security in most instances. Do not buy this book expecting to find another reason to fear America's youth, but be sure to pick this book up if want to regain touch with the fact that high schools are populated by children rather than prisoners.

This book has many other books that I would consider "companions" to Punishing Schools: including specifically "Zero Tolerance" by William Ayers, Rick Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, and Jesse L. Jackson; and on the converse side of the issue "School Crime and Policing" by William L. Turk. ... Read more

Product Description
Bullying and harassment threaten academic achievement and mental health in our schools. Look beyond your work with individual students to address these problems in their larger context!

This book presents enlightening empirical studies and reviews of the literature on peer harassment, bullying, and victimization. Designed to expand our knowledge and understanding of these topics, Bullying, Peer Harassment, and Victimization in the Schools: The Next Generation of Prevention documents the widespread nature of the phenomena both inside and outside the United States, identifies risk and protective factors, and provides practitioners with specific, evidence-based guidelines for effective preventive action.

From the editors: The problem of bullying, peer harassment, and victimization is a serious one in our schools. It greatly affects the climate for learning and productivity and the emotional health of students and staff. This book presents empirical data and theoretical and legal case reviews to show how pervasive and serious these problems are and how they threaten both academic achievement and mental health within many of our schools. Taking a longitudinal and developmental perspective, the authors begin to outline the next generation of research in this field that will shape knowledge and practice for the next few decades. For practitioners, the book is a call to action, particularly at the school-wide level, focusing on reducing the substantial social/emotional harm done to perpetrators, bystanders, and especially, victims.

Bullying, Peer Harassment, and Victimization in the Schools provides vital information on:

what mental health professionals can do to prevent and respond to sexual harassment in schools the relationship between middle-school adjustment and bullying aggressive behavior and friendship patterns in immigrant children school-based intervention strategies the relationship between the cultures of childhood and sexual harassment—from developmental, domestic violence, and legal perspectives risk factors and protective factors affecting victimization and more!
