5-0 out of 5 stars A Mathematical Thriller

Who would have thought that a kids book based on mathematics would be enjoyable?

The "Kung Fu Puzzle", by Thielbar and Helmer, is truly a delight.Centred around a Kung Fu studio operated by Sizu Faiza and hid curious students, the Manga Math Mystery series uses simple mathematical principles to help unravel mysteries. In "Kung Fu", time is the tool, and properly applied to a large house, it creates a Kung Fu Studio laden with secrets.Thielbar teaches math concepts such as ratios, comparison, and time in an entertaining manner.

Artwise, this book falls into the manga style enjoyed by millions worldwide that has seen North American penetration into Sabrina and Salem (Archie Comics). It is a competent art job that really helps this book along.

The remaining three books are equally good, and as a University Math major, I highly recommend these for middle grade students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Written for young readers in grades 9 through 12
There is an epidemic rise in the number of juvenile diabetes cases in America. One of the Chelsea House Publishers outstanding series of health and medical books published in their 'Genes and Diseases' series, "Diabetes" by Toney Allman is specifically written for young readers in grades 9 through 12 and provides a complete and comprehensive introduction to diabetes in terms of what it is, what it does, how it can be diagnosed, how it can be prevented, how it can be treated, the genetic variations contributing to diabetes, and the prospects for a cure. The thoroughly 'kid friendly' text is enhanced with full-color photography and cogent illustrations, informed and informative sidebars, a bibliography for further reading and study, references, thematically appropriate websites, a glossary, and an index. "Diabetes", as with all of the other titles in the Chelsea House 'Genes and Diseases' series is an emphatically recommended addition to family, school, and community library Health & Medicine reference collections and supplemental reading lists for adolescent young readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This is an early reader that sneaks in some graphing to introduce the math concept -- you see different types of graphs and how data is organized. The story is cute -- a kid goes to a family reunion and expects to be bored, but ends up making graphs about all the relatives. It does exactly what it says it's going to do.Readable and enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, flawed graph
This is a fun book -- my 5- and 7-year olds love it. It does a great job of telling an engaging story while teaching about graphs and promoting math as fun. But the one of the bar charts is wrong -- I guess the editors of this series could use some math help themselves. ... Read more
