Product Description
With 200,000 entries in over eighty different fields, Scientific and Technical Acronyms, Symbols, and Abbreviations is the most comprehensive reference of its type, covering more scientific and technical disciplines than any other available book. This invaluable resource will help scientists, engineers, and researchers understand and utilize current terminology in almost any field-from aeronautics to zoology. All accepted abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols are included, from the most obscure to the most common, as well as an appendix that provides important lists of units, systems of units, conversion factors, and prefixes. Science writers, journalists, translators, interpreters-anyone working in or around the sciences-will find this a helpful, easy-to-use guide to difficult technical jargon. Entries are listed in alphabetical order and are defined according to the field in which they are currently in use. Multiple definitions are listed for abbreviations and acronyms that may be in use in more than one field. For instance, the entry for the abbreviation "cb" would show several meanings: "CB" for Canada Balsam, "Cb" for cerebellum, and "c-B" for crystalline boron, among others. Entries for terms in languages other than English are included, as well as abbreviations for all known scientific and technical journals. Simple, comprehensive, and up-to-date, Scientific and Technical Acronyms, Symbols, and Abbreviations is a complete and vital reference for professionals in almost any scientific or technical discipline. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars How about a CD?
A monumental piece of work. Bet you never imagined there could be over 200 000 of these things, eh? The book is a testament to the increasing specialisation of society. The authors have chosen their data from over 80 fields. Clearly, they had to draw the line somewhere. So they chose the most common or important fields, in their estimation. But you have to imagine that had they chosen another 200 fields, the book might be easily twice as thick.

Yes, people do like to read a book, as opposed to reading the same material on a computer screen. But for reference subjects like this, one has to wonder if a DVD might not suffice. After all, who is going to read such a reference from page to page?
And a DVD enables computer searching. Far better than any index. ... Read more

Product Description
Abbreviations contribute to enhanced efficiency of writing, reading, and speaking, as well as greater comprehension of technical and scientific articles, reports, and lectures. They serve to reduce the time and cost of writing, typing, editing, and composition resetting. They also decrease the space required for texts, tables, and diagrams. As such, abbreviations are beneficial tools that enhance the dynamics of technical language.

The Comprehensive Glossary of Telecom Abbreviations and Acronyms is a collection of over 16,000 entries that cover the fields of telecommunications, satellite communications, marine communications, radar and military communications, avionics, electronics, computer, Internet, radio and television broadcasting, fiber optics communications, information technology (IT), Information Communication Technology (ICT), remote sensing, cellular networks, Specialized Mobile Radio (SMR), and ham radio. It pays particular attention to the abbreviations used in ITU, Intelsat, IMO, IMSO, and APSCC documents.

The glossary also contains abbreviations commonly found in telecom magazines, contracts, and financial documents. In addition, it includes entries that reflect the common terminology used by major telecom companies and operators, as well as those used by specialized institutions and standard organizations such as IEEE, ETSI, IETF, ISO, and GSM. It also includes abbreviations on new technologies.

A thorough and essential reference, the Comprehensive Glossary of Telecom Abbreviations and Acronyms helps keep engineers, technical writers, technicians, and university students up to speed on the vast amount of terminology that comes their way. ... Read more

Product Description
This dictionary was produced in response to the rapidly increasing amount of quasi-industrial jargon in the field of information technology, compounded by the fact that these somewhat esoteric terms are often further reduced to acronyms and abbreviations that are seldom explained. Even when they are defined, individual interpretations continue to diverge.

Until now the codes have been reproduced in separate (language) publications: there is no universal listing in alphabetical order that covers the English, French, Spanish and German languages. This dictionary sets out the English, French, Spanish and German alternatives as a single, merge-sorted whole.

Today, most of the codes have passed into the public domain, simply because they exist in most of the telecommunications systems installed throughout the developed (and developing) world and are largely known to most of those who work in that particular area. However, foreign variants often defy even the most astute observer. This dictionary seeks to clarify this bewildering situation as much as possible. The 26,000 definitions set out here, drawn from some 16,000 individual cybernyms, cover computing, electronics, telecommunications (including intelligent networks and mobile telephony), together with satellite technology and Internet/Web terminology.

Annex I lists some of the innumerable file types found in the filing systems of computers using powerful desktop managers and Annex II lists the abbreviations of country names found in universal resource locators (URL).

Elsevier's Dictionary of Cybernyms is a useful tool for translators, students, universities and computer enthusiasts.

3-0 out of 5 stars How about looking it up on the web?
So it has come to this. As technical fields grow and subspecialities develop, and as technology progresses and new terms are coined, who can keep track? So the author has done this for you.

Neat gathering of information. Possibly the more useful stuff is the list of workshops in the various IT fields. Because, apart from that, it might simply be easier and quicker for you to look up an acronym on the web, especially if you can add keywords related to the subject, to narrow down searching.

The book has limited utility. Maybe a library might find a need for it. But for most individuals, it is doubtful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Needs Updating, But Still Useful
Long and complex acronyms and abbreviations are a too-often-confusing fact of life for those in uniform. For anyone interested or working in the field of naval or defense matters, this book is also a valuable reference, especially for the neophyte puzzling over such tortured concoctions like PRELIMPERSACCT, NAVTRAEQUIPCENREPLANT, LANTSHIPRON and the like. And even things like HAIR, COLA and CLASSMATE have translations much different than those of us in "civvies" would ordinarily think.

The only downside to this otherwise superb book is its age. Last updated in 1984, it lacks many of the newer and more heavily used acronyms that have come into use in a military, technological and world situation that has changed so much since the mid-1980s. Perhaps a perpetually available "latest and greatest" edition is impossible in today's fast-moving world, but it would be a tragedy if this work were not revised soon. If nothing else, the reviser or revisers would have the closest thing to job security imaginable these days. ... Read more
