To complement the definitions, the extensive appendices explain how to prepare content for the World Wide Web, with references on current standards and on copyright law. The appendix on HTML includes a basic tutorial and covers HTML 4.0 tags and attributes, the new features in version 4.0 compared to version 3.2, Cascading Style Sheets, Server-Side Includes, and tables of HTML color codes and coded characters. Other appendices provide a reference on programming languages that are used to create dynamic HTML documents. The JavaScript appendix shows how the language is implemented, and other appendices cover the full Extensible Markup Language (XML) specification and a general description of the Unix/Linux operating systems commands. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Welcomed Addition To My Reference Library
...

Perhaps the most complicated and convoluted set of regulations is those concerning hazardous waste, its handling, disposal, and response to its release. Of course it can be considered that the Federal Government did err by calling process by-products hazardous waste instead of following its performance-based philosophy as demonstrated in the OSHA regulations. Regulatory compliance could have been so much simpler if the definition employed was - this by- product has the potential of being hazardous if miss handled, such miss handling entails the following. Alas, this is not the case and we are burdened with a set of regulations that can turn youth aged overnight.

There is hope however, and a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel can be seen. Coming like Dumas' Three Musketeers of old, galloping into the fray and seeking to make order out of chaos come the Hackmans with their Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response Manual and Desk Reference. Since receiving this volume, it has become a ready and useful reference. It provides 16 chapters along with a CD-ROM of essential compliance information. A true compendium of valuable and useful data, guidance, and analyses.

For example, consider Section 2. Hazardous Waste Defined: Contained therein are the following major topics:The OSHA Definition, EPA Definitions, The DOT Definition and Training Aids and Resources. These are then further broken down into sub topics. Such organization, scope and thoroughness provide a valuable tool when evaluating a particular situation or compliance methodology. Other sections cover such topics as Material Hazards, Chemical Incompatibility, Toxicology, and Sampling and Monitoring to name a few. The most substantial section is entitled Superfund Sites and Brownfields: Site Investigation, Control and Remediation. This alone is broken into 22 subsections, each of which is further subdivided.

Perhaps one of the best technical writers of the last century was Samuel Glasstone. His volumes on Chemistry and Nuclear Engineering were very easy to read, understand, and use. This is because he endeavored to number every new topic so that easy reference could be made. This also provided logic to the subject matter, which assisted in the flow of the information that was providing. The Hackmans have effectively employed this numbering technique, and by doing so have provided not only simple logic and understanding to complex subject matter, but have also provided easy access to the information provided in the text.

The text is enhanced by a Glossary of 91 pages plus a 12-page list of Acronyms. Both of these reference aids are important and necessary because of the complexity of the subject matter and that Federal Regulations breed and feed on acronyms and convoluted terminology. It is almost impossible to maintain understanding and awareness of all of them. In fact, the extensive glossary is a welcome adjunct because of the myriad of technical terms and regulatory definitions a fractioned needs to employ and understand. For example, in this glossary, the term hazardous substance is defined by 7 specific requirements; CERCLA, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Section 112r of the Clean Air Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, DOT, Solid Waste Disposal Act and OSHA. This depth and breadth is valuable because it enables a comprehensive evaluation of a particular situation and assists in eliminating or at least minimizing the chance of an omission error.

It must be remembered that many practitioners are experts in a particular technical or regulatory area.As such, they need a tool that assists them in understanding and in becoming aware of requirements outside of their area of expertise. The provision of comprehensive definitions and information helps to foster such a broad perspective.

In addition to the book a special CD is provided as an additional resource. According to the authors this CD serves three purposes: It provides downloadable and printable resources for trainers - these include a sample HAZWOPER Worker exam, It provides a selection of NIOSH Databases which includes the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods and the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, and lastly it provides 18 appendices to the text - these appendices include Limits for Air Contaminants ("Z Lists") 29CFR1910.1000 and the OSHA HAZWOPER Standard, 29CFR 1910.120. Just the contents of the CD is worth the purchase price of the text. All in all, according to the contents, the CD covers 33 separate topics.

When dealing with the complex issues that practitioners face every day, the information contained in the CD forms a comprehensive foundation of knowledge, data and information. This is presented in a concise and easily usable format. Also, instead of creating a second volume, the authors wisely chose this option of the CD to compliment the text, thereby producing one volume packed with essential information and resources.

One of the major frustrations a practitioner faces is that it is usually necessary to consult various references in order to address a particular situation. When a volume comes along that provides an encyclopedia of useful and necessary information, it does simplify many other time-consuming information search tasks. The profession has benefited from this work because it provides that simplification. The authors have brought together information from diverse sources into one volume. One volume, that has already proved its value to my practice.

The only shortcoming is that the use of color, especially in the signs and placarding examples would have been useful and would have assisted in making its reference value even greater. Seeing these items in the colors specified by the regulations would have enhanced the understanding of their meaning and employment. Perhaps just a color insert or inside cover display would have served this need adequately.

This volume has become a useful and welcomed addition to my reference library, and well worth the modest price.

4-0 out of 5 stars What you would expect
Good read for a first time military family. Check it out at the library first, then if you want it buy it. Same old stuff I have heard over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book is a must have for any military family!
I find myself going to this book as a reference guide at least once a week, and we have been in service for ten + years now!!!
Great book! I highly recommend to anyone, whether a single soldier to a vet and their family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Military Life - a good beginning guide
Asmilitary wife of many many years, and the very proud mother of a former soldier, this book really hit the important points. For a "newbie", I'd highly recommend it as a great starting point, as a reference to finding the information you need and places to get more information.Sue doesn't try to be all things to everyone, she gives a choice of links/hints and educates on some of the finer points that are often forgotten or never told to the newest members of this little world.Believe it or not, there are still "teas" and "balls" and dining ins/dining outs - all of which have their rules, and if you flub that one, your servicemember WILL hear about it later.

Knowing that information in the military is often changeable, and fluid, she give you links to find out those important things, pay, BAH, etc.Sue "translates" the jargon, she reminds you of the "little things" that are sometimes overwhelmed by the day to day life of a deployment, or training. This book doesn't sugarcoat our lives, doesn't wave the flag or denigrate the service, which is all too common in books about the military life. There is no judgment, no placing the military on a pedestal or dragging it through the mud - but her pride in this lifestyle shines through.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Informational Book I Have Ever "Read"
I'm sorry to disagree with the above reviews, but I just could not stay quiet. My son entered boot camp in January of 2008, and he recently deployed to Afghanistan as a combat medic with the 82nd Airborne Division. As soon as he began considering the enlistment process, I went on a mission, researching everything I could find, everywhere I could find it, so we, as a family would be better educated and more capable of offering him the best support we could.

There is NOTHING in this book that I had not already found myself with a few very simple clicks on many a search engine, not to mention several phone calls, conversations with his recruiter, and acquaintances of ours who were happy to help.

The book is WAY too general, never offering specifics on things such as specific dollar amounts when it comes to pay grade, etc.Almost without exception, the most pertinent information a reader would be looking for was followed by a link, which they could have easily found themselves for free without paying the $15 or so for the book.

I also found many comments insulting and condescending, as when suggesting couples to be flexible with each other 'during this tough time' and remembering to email and call to remind each other how important they were to the other. For real???????

Some of the information was just a plain JOKE.The section that states that military families can use military aircraft for their air travel is just about as possible as winning the lottery.Believe me, I've had friends who've tried. There were other examples of this as well.Military families on limites budgets need the TRUTH.

To me, as a mom of a son defending our great country (I have 2 cousins in the Army also) this was insulting. It made it sound like the proper way to dress and speak at a garden party was of the utmost importance, rather than how to dig in, circle the wagons, and prepare yourselves for one of the most difficult, joyous, and sometimes heartwrenching time of your life. Not to mention that the main author of this book was a Financial Advisor????? Oh my goodness.

In conclusion, save your money.the internet is free and there are many helpful people out there, active and past military included who will give you honest and up-to-date information you can count on. This book just was not worth the paper it was printed on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all soldiers- even if you're single!
I grew up with both of my parents being career Army and have now joined myself. This book offers indispensible information- even things my parents didn't know after 30+ years of service! There are great overviews that explain military customs, benefits, how and why to get a power of attorney, etc. It is definately worth the $13 list price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!
"Comprehensive' and "Practical" are the proper words to describe this book.

In contrast to other pain medicine text books, it starts with "General Considerations" in Part I which provides very important and hard to find information such as "Organization of Inpatient Pain Service", "Organization of Pain Services for Chronic and Cancer Pain', "Organization of Pain Management Services in Children" which are instrumental for any pain practices in learning and following appropriate guidelines in establishing and providing such services.

In Part II, the "Basic Consideration" touches on Pain Pathways & Mechanisms, Anatomy and Physiology, Neurochemistry in a rather focused way.Two short Chapters with one on "Pharmacological Management of Pain", one on "Biopsychosocial Evaluation & Treatment of Chronic Pain" are refreshing and informative.

In Part III, the "Clinical Consideration", provides Chapters on "Acute Pain Syndromes", "Pain During Pregnancy", "Phantom Pain", "Visceral Pain", "Cancer Pain", "Pain in Selected Neurological Disorders", "Geriatric Pain", "Pain in Children". I find these chapters helpful in setting up guidelines for the management of acute pain, cancer pain, pediatric pain and pain in pregnant women. E.g, I had tough time during my Pain Management Fellowship training in finding the topic of "pain management in pregnancy" from other pain management text books. The discussion on post op pain management is quite thorough which helped me quite a bit during my Pain Fellowship Acute Pain Service.

In Part IV, the section of "Evaluation & Investigation" includes chapters on taking history, performing basic exams including focused neurological and musculoskletal exams which are practical and useful. However, the "Radiology" chapter needs more spine images since spinal pain from neck to low back is what we see most from chronic pain population. I was surprised to find that it does not have a cervical MRI in this chapter. The chapter on `Differential Neural Blockade" is informative, although the clinical utility of these blocks in clinical practice is questionable.

Part V consists of three sections, A, B, C respectively.

Section A includes chapters on "Pharmacological Techniques", "Pharmacokinetics of Analgesics" and "Neuropsychiatric Drug use in Pain Management" which are well written. Among them, the discussion on opioid analgesics is very useful in clinical practice, especially in the settings of management of acute pain, based on my own personal experience.

Section B contains chapters on procedural approaches of commonly performed interventional procedures including from head to toe peripheral nerve blocks, epidural nerve blocks and sympathetic nerve blocks. Additionally, it has a chapter on "Organization of Nerve Block Facility" that contains instrumental information on personnel, equipment, supplies, documentations, which is extremely useful for newly established pain clinic that plans to provide interventional services.

Section C, the "Special Techniques" that covers varieties of individual interventional arena such as "Epidural Steroid Injection", "Facet Sydromes and Block", "Spinal Opioid for Acute Pain", "Cryoneurolysis & Radiofrequency Lesioning", "Spinal Cord Stimulation" , "Implanted Drug Delivery Systems" , "Surgical Techniques in Pain Management", "Alternative Pain Medicine" and even "Acupuncture", etc. The chapter on "Spinal Opioid for Acute Pain" helped me tremendously during my Fellowship training while on Acute Pain Services at Univ. of Michigan Health System, managing patients on patient-controlled epidural opioid infusion for post-op pain control. Some of the chapters, e.g.,the "Epidural Steroid Injection" can be significantly improved with inclusion of more fluoroscopic picture demonstrating anatomic locations of needle placement, contrast spread pattern, etc. The Chapter on "Radiofrequency Lesioning" needs more illustration with pictures showing needle placement as one can not learn these procedures from reading procedural descriptions. Good quality fluoroscopic pictures work way better than words.

Part VI through Part VIII summarizes outcomes, efficacy and complications of pain management in acute pain, chronic pain, neuropathic pain and cancer pain. It also includes discussion of pain management in emergency room, home care and palliative medicine. Finally, it ends with discussion of pain management of future.

In summary, this is a comprehensive, practical text book of pain management. It is an excellent resource for physicians to gain insight into areas pertinent to pain management practice, such as how to set up pain clinic, how to organize acute pain service, how to organize a procedural facility, etc. I personally benefited from reading it in preparing my Board Examination in the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians(Part II)(Fellow, Interventional Pain Practice, World Institute of Pain).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the pain specialist
This book is in its third edition. The book is keeping up with the rapidlychanging specialty of the Practice of Pain. The current edition has beenexpanded and extensively revised. The approach is "practical". Amust for the practicing Pain Specialist and helpful for the pain patient tounderstand the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which are wellillustrated.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good first text on Pain Management...
This is a very good textbook on invasive pain management techniques, and their utility in clinical practice. The book reads well, is reasonably well illustrated, and includes tables of studies of techniques and their success rates. Additional discussion of the non-invasive medical andphysiotherapeutic techniques of pain control for specific disorders areincluded. The book is multi-authored, with sections by Dr. P. Prithvi Raj,a noted expert in the field. This was the first textbook of Pain ManagementI purchased for myown clinical practice and it served me well. A newedition is due for 1999.I also would recommend the superb andscholarly Monograph, "Current Review ofPain" edited by the sameauthor. This latter series summarizes the latest developments in the basicsciences and the clinical sciences in Pain Management, is very wellillustrated, and the author has gone to the trouble of including anannotated bibliography of the voluminous medical and scientific literatureon Pain, enabling the researcher and practitioner to select those articlesfrom Medline most useful to his or her research and/or clinical endeavors. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch
I got this dictionary a couple of years ago. It has an amazing amount of detail on a broad number of computer topics. Most everything I have wanted to define is in here, minus proprietary terms specific to a particular vender of course. But amazingly, most general industry terms are defined. Well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars very detailed!
