Product Description
Governing Scotland explores the origins and development of the Scottish Office in an attempt to understand Scotland's position within the UK union state in the twentieth century. Two competing views were encapsulated in debates on how Scotland should be governed in the early twentieth century: a Whitehall view that emphasized a professional bureaucracy with power centered on London and a Scottish view that emphasized the importance of Scottish national sentiment. These views were ultimately reconciled in "administrative devolution."

Scottish devolution brought high hopes for an open political culture. But how far have these been fulfilled? Open Scotland? argues that in the field of political communication, the old, established ways of the British state still remain firmly in place. Westminster and Whitehall still cast long shadows over Edinburgh. This book offers the first full-scale coverage of how media, politicians and lobbyists interact in the new Scotland. ... Read more

Product Description

The Industrial Politics of Devolution explains devolution's central phenomenon in Scottish and British political life since the 1960s in terms of economic developments and industrial struggles. It was advanced by business leaders keen to isolate Scotland from the perceived advance of socialism and supported by Scottish trade unionists to protect employment and improve working class living standards. The book shows how devolution was shaped by car manufacturing at Linwood, unofficial strikes and the struggles over industrial relations reform, the grand "Oceanspan" design for industrial and social regeneration, the famous UCS work-in, the miners' strikes, and the impact of North Sea Oil. The book challenges received wisdoms about the 1979 devolution referendum and places the devolutionary politics of the 1980s and 1990s in this longer, industrial perspective.

Product Description
Scotland's past is too often seen through a film of myths and misconceptions. In this Very Short Introduction, Rab Houston explores the key themes from more than 1,000 years of Scotland's very real and very fascinating history. Covering everything from the Jacobites to devolution to the modern economy, this concise account presents a fully-integrated picture of Scottish society, culture, politics and religion. Houston examines a range of important subjects, including how an independent Scottish nation emerged in the Middle Ages, how it was irrevocably altered by Reformation, how links with England and economic change have affected Scotland, and how Scotland has in turn influenced the development of the modern world. The book shows as well why Scotland's history has made it distinct from England, both before and after Union, and why it has today arrived at a political, social and cultural watershed. Authoritative, lucid, and ranging widely over issues of environment, people, and identity, this is Scotland's story without myths: an ideal introduction for those interested in the Scots, but also a balanced yet refreshing challenge to those who already feel at home in Scotland past and present. ... Product Description

In 2007 Labour lost an election in Scotland for the first time in half a century and the SNP went on to form the Scottish Government. This book explains why. Based on a unique three-wave survey of the Scottish electorate, it can truly be described as the first full-scale Scottish national election study. As such, it is notable not only for its innovative methodology but also because theories and concepts are taken from the recent electoral studies literature and applied to Scotland. Other questions investigated include the impact of campaigning and of the party leaders (at both Scottish and British level) on the election outcome. In addition, for the first time in the UK context, a special study is made of the causes and consequences of rejected ballots -- the large number of which at this election caused a media outcry.

This book will be required reading for anyone interested in, involved in, teaching or studying Scottish politics. It will also be an important text for those concerned with UK politics in general and attract particular interest among students of elections, both in the UK and internationally.

The Memorialls sent at that tyme for his direction, penned and written by Mr Spottswood's owne hand, but with the warrant and advice of the rest of the Bishops, and found among Mr Gavin's writs immediately after his death, I have here set downe, that the Reader, by this one, may collect what syeophanticall and treacherous letters they wrote up to the Court. They protested at Linlithgow, that they were innocent of any hard dealling used against the ministerie, or of misinformations given to his Majesty; but here they urge the confyne- ment of Mr John Murray in a barbarous part of the countrey, because the Castle of Edinburgh was too near his owne paroch in lieith, where they had their consultations. Ye may perceave what sincerity there was in the pretended reconciliation at the last Assembly, or in appointing a conference to remove differences of opinion; which was not yet holden. They delated Counsellours, Sessioners, Ministers. They seek presentation of ministers to modified stipends to be put in the King's hands, that none may be presented but such as favoured their course. Product Description

Scotland First is a unique book about Scottish and UK politics written by a man who was at the heart of Britain's constitutional upheaval and the turbulent early years of the Scottish Parliament. Henry McLeish explains how growing up as a member of a Fife mining family laid the foundations for 30 years in elected politics. In this controversial autobiography, McLeish reveals inside information about the Blair government, relates the behind-the-scenes battles for Scottish devolution, and details the clash of politics and personalities during this period. He tells the real truth about the White Paper that rewrote history and the behavior of Scottish MPs at Westminster, and comes clean about the scandal surrounding the spiralling cost of the Holyrood Parliament building. In this candid, no holds-barred account, McLeish also gives his radical and controversial blueprint for politics in Scotland, the UK, and the future for 21st-century politics.

Product Description
Following the large votes in support of the creation of a Scottish Parliament with tax varying powers in the referendum of September 1997, the British Government published a Bill in December 1997. The parliament should be created in 1999. This should have important implications for the pattern of regional governance in the UK and the conduct of regional and industrial policy. This text discusses the potential economic impact of the Scottish Parliament, introducing an analytical tone to a debate which has been largely dominated by political rhetoric in the academic field. It consists of papers given at the Scottish branch of the Regional Studies Association in February 1998. ... Read more

Product Description
The clash between local government and the central government of Margaret Thatcher provided one of the most dominating sights of the 1980s political scene. This book is a major contribution to our understanding of the relations between two of the most controversial city councils - Liverpool and Glasgow - and central government. Through detailed analysis of the way in which these councils managed fiscal stress the book debunks the widely held belief that local government had been neutered by the relentless march of centralisation. The book employs ideas from beyond political science such as those of urban sociology and geography, with their work on the concepts of community, locality and place. It identifies the crucial role of 'locality' as a factor in influencing local behaviour, calling for a reappraisal of our current theoretical understanding to take this localities effect into account. While the focus of the study is on the two cities, the author provides a fresh insight into the theoretical debate about the role of local government and provides a synthesis of the policy developments which occurred at the national level during the 1980s.The book concludes with a powerful claim that local government does matter for the future of a healthy British polity and provides strong evidence of the resilience of local councils by being able to carve out a discretionary role even through the storm of the Thatcher years. ...
