Product Description

He's the godfather of the U.S. Navy SEALs -- the founder of the boldest, brightest, baddest bunch of commandos on the face of the planet. Now Roy Boehm tells how he mastered survival as a warrior -- and changed the course of twentieth-century warfare.

Roy Boehm was fated for heroism from the moment he shipped out with the U.S. Navy, eight months before Pearl Harbor. His brilliant fighting career would lead him from the sea battles of the South Pacific to the killing fields of Vietnam.

As World War II came to a close and the Cold War began, Boehm saw the need for an unconventional warrior. Drawing on his expertise as a diver and member of the Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams, he created a force capable of attack from sea, air, or land. This unique dedicated and ruthless unit would become the legendary Navy SEALs. With the impact of a depth charge, First Seal delivers a no-holds-barred look at what it takes to be one of that rare breed of men who live for war...or die for their country. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He's missed!
I became friends with Roy while a member of EAA 565 in Punta Gorda, FL. He became our Santa Clause every year at our annual Christmas party. What a great man! Had to have his book! It's really hard to describe such a powerful personality that was never ever overbearing with his friends. He's missed and cannot ever be replaced.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Seal
An excellent autobiography by a warrior, the first Seal. Very well written. Roy Boehm's experiences from World War 2 to post Vietnam era.

If you enjoyed "Chickenhawk" by James Mason you'll definitely enjoy "The First Seal".

5-0 out of 5 stars A true sea warrior...
I'v e read a good number of books by special forces soldiers and officers and have always been fascinated by them.So when I found there was a biography by the man who created the SEALs I had to find a copy.I was not disappointed at all as we were treated to a bit more than the typical special forces biography, mostly because everything Boehm did has since been declassified.

Boehm starts off recounting the action that he saw in World War II onboard a destroyer manning one of the guns.He did a very good job in detailing this as well as how he gradually moved towards he future by beginning to train in diving.A memorable scene was after his ship sunk he was stranded with a shipmate and was attempting to swim to a far off island. His encounter with the shark was detailed and memorable, striking fear into the reader at just the thought of what happened.

After that we move along to his entrance to UDT and are treated to a decent accounting of what a man went through in order to become a part of the UDT teams of the navy.Hell Week was a great account that I always love to read about.

Finally we moved to his creation of the Navy SEALs and the ordeals that he had to go through in order to make it all happen. We don't see to much action from Boehm as a SEAL, simply because he was getting up there in age and pissed too many people off, so he was removed from office almost immediately after the SEALs began to take shape. But that did not mean he went to waste, and instead pushed him into Vietnam as an advisor set to train sea warriors out of the Vietnamese.

Boehm had a very eventful life, one that certainly had enough going on to be an interesting read. Some of it might have seemed a bit made up, just from the sheer audacity or outlandish outcome, but I wouldn't put it past Boehm in doing all that he said he did, such as taking revenge on a black tipped shark. His writing is an in your face writing, holding nothing back.Blunt and to the point without mincing words.Sometimes I wish more autobiographies were written this way.

I would definitely recommend this book to all interested in Special Forces, and more specifically the Navy SEALs.This bio is akin to the one Marcinko wrote in style and manner, so if you enjoyed his than you would certainly enjoy this one as well.A definite recommend.

5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story
A very interesting story. If you have read Rogue Warrior by Marcinko, then you should follow-up with this book.It provides insight into the mindset, at least in the early days, of the SEAL teams.

Boehm was rough around the edges, to put it mildly, but was still able to get his ideas accepted. The military, as ususal, resisted the changes as they still do today.

Another common element with today, is the resistance from those who have difficulty distinguishing friend from foe; "...do-gooders back in the States sent the fertilizer, along with outboard engines and other supplies to the "poor peasants" of Vietnam. The outboards became "shrimp tails" pushing sampans delivering VC supplies in the Delta. The bags of fertilizer containing sodium nitrate and sodium potassium were turned into explosives."(p. 249)

Boehm was a "rogue" warrior. Amazing man, but clearly one who operated outside the norms of the military. The best parts of this book, in my opinion, were those about the Cuban missile crisis and Boehm's excursion into Cuba.Daring stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read in memoirs of special operations memoirs
Great book, insight into what it took to build the teams and how stupid the bureaucrats and politically minded military officers can be (not a surprise to any veteran).

A must read for those who follow the Navy SEALS exploits through the years.

It is also one source, all such memoirs are best understood in the context of one of many views and opinions.from the dozens of SEAL memoirs I have read, Boehm is revered by real SEAL warriors.

The negative review of this book is obviously someone who served with him but was a bean counter not a warrior. ... Read more

New weapon for the boys! And the perfect time to try them out. Going against the druglords of Columbia. This is action packed and well written as all of Mr. Douglass' books usually are. Fans of action novels should like this one. His descriptions of both battle scenes and the weapons are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
The 2nd book and it showed all the suspense and action of the first. The action is well told without seeming over the top and the author goes a long way to show that everything isn't easy for these men.

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book in the series the most.
The scene in the book where the SEALs do a HAHO parachute jump in the middle of the night over Lake Ohrid was so well written, I thought I was there!Characters are realistic and action is non-stop.Would love to see this story hit the big screen!Keith, you've done it again!Best SEAL Series out there. For a hoo-yah good time, you'll find it hard putting this one down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as exciting as the first book, still worth reading
Opening scene is great, remainder is less
exciting.There isn't as much technical
detail as in Direct Action.
Still a great book in an excellent series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, but. . .
Specter did not have the pace of the first book, although it is still excellent. I enjoyed the first scene of the book, in Bosnia. But, the rescue at the castle was too much of shoot out for me. This is still better than anything out there. ... Read more

Product Description

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." With these words, the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu might as well have been thinking on the adventures Jackie Tempo, who is on an unusual quest to find her parents.

Jackie Tempo is a lonely teen who lives in a remote New England town. She mourns her parents who died in a car crash when she was young. In the mansion she shares with her eccentric Aunt Isobel, Jackie discovers a mysterious text, which transports her back in time to Ming China. Jackie is stunned to find herself on a Portuguese caravel - and the ship's doctor is her father, David! The year is 1521. Thus begins Jackie's journey through time and space, at turns an exciting and harrowing adventure.

Along the way, Jackie encounters a Buddhist monk, a strong-willed concubine, and a runaway girl who has been falsely accused of stealing the Emperor's seal. Together, she and Jackie forge a bond in their unusual quest to find their way home. However, they quickly discover that a darker force is at work here.It is up to Jackie and her allies to prevent a serious disruption in the time-space continuum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for the pre-teen group!
As part of my 11-year old daughter's summer reading assignment, I gave her a number of books, telling her to pick one so that she could read 30 minutes per day.She picked this one, interested in the time-traveling aspect of it.The first day, she read the required 30 minutes.Today, she didn't put it down until she finished, spending more than an hour longer than her "required" reading timer. My daughter loves books like the Magic Thief, the Lightening Thief, the Darkside series and other fictional books, set in realistic or accurate environments. This book fit the bill perfectly, allowing her to follow an interesting story-line while still learning about an environment, based in facts. She and I are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the second book!

Very good from the view of a history teacher as well as an 11 year old :)Looking forward to more Jackie Tempo books.

The Snake in the Desert

The first generation of SEALs was forged in the steaming jungles of Vietnam, their deadly skills honed by combat. But jealousy brewing within the U.S. military bureaucracy threatened the future of the warrior elite, and shortsighted thinking forced them into pitched battles in Grenada and Panama that the SEALs shouldn't have fought and couldn't have won. Now the opportunity has finally come for redemption when the tanks of a ruthless Middle Eastern despot roll across the unprotected borders of a neighboring nation. Here, in a world of blood and oil, a new generation of SEALs is going in first to fight a new kind of war on its terms -- as Hunter–Killer teams of America's deadliest commandos plunge into a fast and murderous game of hide-seek-and-strike on Iraqi sands.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice buy
The book was in better condition than I expected and of course at the right price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Casualties of War
Ordering was easy and I received my order very quickly.I was very satisfied.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad -- an inside look at the SEALs.
This is a very readable novel about the SEALS that takes place during the Panama and First Gulf War eras.If you are interested in what went on during these operations, and the role that the SEALs played in them, then this book is for you. This novel offers an insightful look at the SEALs, their mission and training, and overall what the SEALs are all about.

The characterizations in this novel are actually not too bad for a techno-thriller, and the reader actually comes to identify with two of the main protagonists. But the real center of this novel is the SEAL organization itself. At times the novel rehashes the politics and military issues of the Panama and Gulf War conflicts to a point where it is something of a history lesson, but by and large the novel moves along smartly, and holds the reader's interest.Three stars. Not bad at all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Uncannily Wonderful
The Drapers have taken the Last Days genre and lifted it to awe-inspiring level. While taken from the LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) perspective, they unfold the Scriptures in a gripping tale that is of good report for all who read it. I am especially greatful of the interlude dialogs of the father writing to his son in the mission field and his plain and clear explanations of gospel principals and the scriptures and tie them into today's world and what is going on around us.

Whether you are a fan of apocolyptic fiction or an earnest student of Last Day prophicies, I can't recommend this book and this series enough.A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars A tale of faith in the quest for right
Jessica Draper weaves an amazing tale of the fight for right in a deteriorating world. She combines our modern day with the revelations in the bible to create a story of how these things could come to pass. She brings her characters to live, from the geneticists Chris and Merry, to Dove, a gang member in the borderlands who is searching for a better life.Putting down this book will only leave you desperate to find out what happens next.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book of Revelations Decoded
Draper decodes the Book of Revelation. What are the two greatest books explaining God's plan for man and the destiny of the earth? They are the Book of Revelation and Isaiah. Many people struggle to understand the meaning of the poetic content of Isaiah and the Book of Revelation.

These books are difficult because both books have spiritual symbolism and historical context hurdles. These barriers are to prevent the spiritually weak from understanding. The spirit of prophecy and revelation is required to understand the words of the both Seers. The spiritual information is essential for the elect to survive the destructions of the last days.

Draper brilliantly ties in doctrine from D&C 45, 88, 133 and Ezekiel, Daniel, and Isaiah to paint a picture of war, a war between God's kingdom and Satan's kingdom.Draper is both intellectually and spiritually gifted. His work is the result of comprehensive research, carefully drawn conclusions, and deep spiritual commitment to understand. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars just OK is not ok for LMR
I was expecting for this book for a loong time. After ordering it from amazon, I re-read the Midnight series all over again (it took longer to deliver to my country). needless to say, revisiting these almost excellent romance packs has inreased my expectations just a litle bit! then, bam. the book arrived, I couldnot wait to go back home to start reading, ignored my husband, went to the reading room and finished the book in couple of hours because I was skimming some pages to get to the point. It was just like a harlequin blaze book. not enough time to develop characters or story line, oh wait there was enough time and number of pages, it just did not happen. I did not understand the H and h, did not have enough evidence to like them, and could not share their lives, expectations, hopes and frustrations and their happiness at the end. As far as I am concerned this is the reason that I read romance-action books.
so, I hope she nails it next time. I did not give up on her yet, just like I did for some other, once-time favorite romwriters.

4-0 out of 5 stars When an alpha-hero tears off your $150 La Perla panties does he have to buy you new ones?
Security company owner Sam ogles Nicole the owner of the translation company across the hall. Nicole's company is sent an encrypted email warning of a terrorist attack. Bad guys try to hunt down the email and silence Nicole. Sam must save her.

Pros: I love the way Rice writes. Her books are well-paced and involving. This book has a better plot than most and the terrorist sub plot is very interesting. The characters are typical: beautiful heroine with family baggage paired with alpha-male hero from a bad upbringing, with an elite military background, and with an enormous hard-to-control Johnson at the mere thought of the heroine. This hero also has a clear disregard for expensive lingerie. It's a formula, but it works for me because I love the internal dialog Rice applies to her heroes. Her heroines are, um, easy, to put it nicely, and succumb to the intense sexuality of the hero on the first date -- though she's never done anything like that before, of course not. (Hey, they only have 300 pages to get it on, she can't be too coy.) In this book Nicole runs out while Sam is sleeping after the first time and then avoids his calls. This leads to some really good writing as Sam tries to figure out what turned her off and how to get her back.

Cons: It was a really good plot until the TSTL* moment when Nicole delivers herself on a silver platter to the bad guys without leaving any breadcrumbs for Sam to follow. The cop Mark doesn't behave like a trained cop when he goes along with Sam on his rescue mission.

Overall this is a fun read. Again, it follows a formula, but it's one I'll read over and over again because I love this author's voice and there are enough subtle differences in plot and character to trick me into thinking I'm reading a different book. Highly recommended 4 stars.

*TSTL--To Stupid To Live. The moment at which an intelligent heroine loses her brains and does something so incredibly stupid you can't relate to her anymore. (Imagine Michelle Obama bored at a state dinner suddenly starting a food fight to liven things up. Wouldn't happen.) Sometimes used as a plot device to quickly achieve dramatic tension, the heroine does something dumb putting herself in danger so that the hero can save her. A TSTL moment is when it backfires on the author and you say, "Oh, come on," and close the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Into The Crossfire
Ex-Navy SEAL turned successful businessman Sam Reston has met the one person who can bring him to his knees - Nicole Pearce. The new office for Nicole's translation company is across the hall from Reston Security so Sam gets the pleasure and pain of seeing her daily. Nicole's life is not her own because she's caring for her dying father. She has no time for romance. Even a night of hot sex won't change her mind. Sam sees things differently, though, and just as he's about to show Nicole what's between them, Nicole's life is threatened, bringing a terrorist's plan close to fruition.

A large portion of Into The Crossfire's plotline echoes the catastrophic events of September 11th. The terrorist's actions and thought process is realistically scary. Sam and Nicole are forming a passionate relationship under tumultuous circumstances, unaware of his evil intentions. Sam is strong and tough, and falls hard and fast for Nicole. Nicole is too busy to think of herself, but Sam's magnetism is intense and ultimately, undeniable. Their passion consumes them, and their connection is too strong to ignore. Nicole's father's illness adds another heartbreaking dose of reality to their story, giving Into The Crossfire a dramatic and poignant ending that is as somber as it is joyful.

Lisa Marie Rice has a formula for her stories: dominant, successful man falls hard for demure, sophisticated woman. They have incredible sex that blows them both away and then he saves her from danger. Into the Crossfire mimics previous stories giving readers heart-stopping action, danger, excitement, and a romance with searing passion. I like Lisa Marie Rice's predictable style, her heroes and her heroines, and the eroticism that simmers throughout her stories. She always leaves me wanting more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Into the Crossfire
This book lights my fire!

I love Lisa Marie Rice's writing.I especially love her heroes. The heroes in LMR books are strong, moral and can sex it up All Night Long. What's not to love about that?

LMR is one of my all time favorite authors. Not because her online personality is awesome. If she's online, I haven't found her.Not because she sends me free books.I totally wish she would. Not because she churns out enough books to keep me satisfied. She doesn't.*shakes fist at the publishing gods*

Lisa Marie Rice is one of my all time favorite authors because the romantic in me loves her heroes.Because the woman in me can relate to her heroines.Because the reader in me loves her plots (even though they are mostly the same).

With Into the Crossfire you meet Sam Reston and his two 'brothers'.Sam falls for the very beautiful Nicole Pearce.Nicole becomes targeted by bad guys.In typical LMR fashion, Sam comes to Nicole's rescue.Danger escalates.Bad stuff goes down.

The overwhelming emotion is what draws me to LMR time and again.I can't wait for the next in this series.CAN'T WAIT!

5-0 out of 5 stars What an exciting ride!As usual.....Lisa delivers!
I've read every book Lisa Marie Rice has written.I loved her Midnight series and have read each of the three books in that series at least 3 times. It's that good. Now with this PROTECTOR series I plan to do the same. This first book was exactly what this reader is looking for: suspense, HOT romance, excitement and developed characters. The love that slowly develops between Sam and Nicole is wonderfully written.Lisa always goes into depth with her subjects and the reader can tell that she researches her book subjects to the n'th degree.
At some point in every one of Lisa's books there is nail-biting urgency!Who would die and who would live???This book didn't disappoint in any way, manner, shape or form.
I can hardly wait for the next in this series which will be "Hotter Than Wildfire"; due out April 2011.I'll be reserving my copy as soon as possible.
Other LMR books I simply love: Port of Paradise, and all three of the Dangerous series books.I recommend them highly as I do this book which I'll read again soon.It is that good.
Thank you Lisa! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical facts and fictions.
The Sign and the Seal by Graham Hancock is one of the best researched books on the contradictions of traditional, accepted histories and logical interpretations of finds and texts of the past.Of special interest to me is "The Finger of God", which the Egyptian priests tell Pharaoh, Moses has.The tantalizing thought that this thing could be knocking around somewhere in Ethiopia with the Ark is enough to make me want to go hunting legends.
Our history may be a very different story than the one that was taught to us in church and school. After reading the book I was left with this thought: Modern man is approximately one million years old.So starting from scratch man could have developed highly technological civilizations like our own, one hundred times between ice ages and volcano cycles. If he did some of his tools, like the "finger of God", could still exist.
If you have problems with accepting the traditional theories of the past because so much of it is based on faith and miracles, while seeming to ignore the available facts, or if you are just interested in alternative histories, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars great religion/history book

While it does not definitvely answer the wuestion of the fate of the Ark of the Covenant, this book presents a thorough and intersting look into the history, culture and religion of Ethiopia -both Christian and Jewish.
Ethuiopia is a fascinating country whether they have the Ark or not!

5-0 out of 5 stars educational and entertaining
Cover to cover it is an engaging read. It doesn't matter if you don't agree with some of his conclusions and intrepretations it is still an educational and entertaining read.It describes a rich and ancient history of a country that the average North American would otherwise not know anything about. I would recommend it to any one interested in biblical history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well researched, but some conclusions are debatable
I was highly impressed with Graham Hancock's committment to completing his quest and telling his story. He did so at the cost of his family, which is regretable.I much appriciate his sacrifice for all of us. It is obviousthat he put a great deal of time, research and effort into his work.Wenow have a more clearer story of the "FOUND" Ark of the Covenantof God; "found" because I do believe it is in Ethiopia.

However, I do disagree with a few of Graham's conclusions, specificallywith regard to Moses as only being a master magician, educated by theEgyptians, and Jesus as not being the Divine Son of God.I have many ideasand comments on the subject, but with just 1,000 words allowed, I must bebrief.

I also wish to contact Graham, to share some of my insights, but Ido not have a way of establishing communications with him.I have numerousquestions, such as:1) Has Graham actually read the Book of Enoch; 2) Hashe done research on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (forthey have a lot of templar type traditions-- and a definite connection withFreemasonry); 3) Has he actually attempted to contact the modern Templarsand the Vatican for direct questioning, particularly concerning the truemotivation for the Knight's quest for the Ark, and concerning the contactof Pope Clement V with the Ethiopian delegation, just one year prior to thepersecution of the Templars; and 4) is Graham himself a Templar?

I am aChristian and have full faith that the scriptures are accurate.I also donot believe that it is inconsistant that a just and loving God would slaythe wicked, for disobeying him--especially on such sacred and importantmatters as the establishment of God's Law and Gospel to His Children, onearth, through his vessel--the Ark.It is not unjust for the righteousto slay the wicked. Therefore, I do not classify God as being apsychopathic murderer as Graham had suggested.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-follow journey for the reader
This book was the first of Graham Hancock's I ever read. Although the size was, at first, daunting, I quickly was drawn into the book as it contextualizes the history surrounding the Ark of the Covenant to explain where others quests may have gone awry. Hancock enables the reader to retrace the possible/probable trail the Ark may have taken and explains each twist and turn with basic logic. I was able to read it in 3 days and retained enough to retell the tale during 3 a.m. guard duty shifts to my fellow freezing comrades, making the time pass quickly and opening up more lively conversation than you usually find guarding an empty perimeter in the snow. I loaned it to a professor and have yet to get it back. Of course, now my brother has a copy. A great book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast moving----better start than ending
This piece of fiction (I prefer reading true stories) starts fast, but drags out the ending in a totally unrealsitic fashion. The authro seems to have more technical knowledge than creative skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Action Brain Candy
Keith Douglas does a great job describing military action sequences. He makes it easy to get lost in what the SEALs are doing at the moment during the story. This series is great for readers that are action-minded, and simply love it when "stuff blows up".

5-0 out of 5 stars Just start to a great series!
The first in this series and is by far one of the best. While it may seem to start out slow, all first books are like this. This book however heats up and never starts. It will bring to life the characters you will get used to as you read the series,
lets you see their personalities, etc. The action is wonderfully written. A book that can be read more than once.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one that started it all!!
I have read the entire series of Seal Team Seven and still come back to re-read the novel that started it all!!Douglass's initial portrayal of the Team is very authentic - the close ties to the Teams and their brothers-in-arms.Everything seems to have been well though out and kept as realistic as it could be.Too bad after the 4th or 5th novel, this gets lost in a sea of techno-gadgetry and Rambo-esque battles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hang on tight for a great roller coaster ride!Hoo-Yaah!
This is the book that starts it all.A great book about the Navy SEALs.If you are into the subject, you will love this book and are bound to enjoy the rest of Keith Douglass' series.Great characters and great action! You'll soon be looking for the next book in the series. ... Read more

Navy SEALs are ordinary people who do extraordinary jobs. It takes an optimal level of fitness to swim 6 miles, run 15 miles and perform over 150 pull-ups, 400 pushups and 400 sit-ups in one day—but more importantly, it takes motivation and determination to stick with it to the end. If you follow and finish this workout, you will find yourself in the best physical shape of your life! With this program, you will be ready for any military training or physical challenge in the world. Train with the world's fittest and strongest individuals: the US Navy SEALs! 150 b/w photos.Amazon.com Review
The "Hypoxic Swim Training" exercises aren't supposed to bedone alone--in case you pass out. That should give you a wee taste ofhow hardcore this fitness program is. But then again, the SEALs'bodies are also quite hard, and author Stewart Smith is noexception--his calves, thighs, and biceps are roughly the samegigantic girth. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy and theman in charge of training the Basic Underwater Demolition SEALcandidates, he presents here an ultraintensive 12-week program that'sdesigned to help you pass the Navy SEAL fitness test. That's no smallfeat: SEALs are required to be able to swim 6 miles, run 15 miles, anddo 150 pull-ups, 400 push-ups, and 400 sit-ups.

The book is packedwith supremely clear step-by-step photographs with accompanyingexplanations that won't leave you guessing whether you're doinganything wrong. That's a good thing, too, because it would be easy toget confused with the seven types of sit-ups in the abdominalsection. The workout's designed to be done without requiring a gymmembership, although you will need a chin-up bar and swimming pool tocomplete the entire workout. There are plenty of stretches and tips ontechnique to prevent injury, along with an adjustable beginner'sfour-week program for those who aren't in good enough condition toattempt the main program. So whether you want to become a NavySEAL--or just look like one--you'll be in good hands with thisbook. As the Navy Frogmen would say, HOOYAH! (Bullhorn not included.)--Erica Jorgensen ... Read more

In my opinion, as someone who has assessed, selected, and trained special operations personnel, this is a good book.Providing there is a fitness base, the exercise routines in this book will assist the aspiring special operations warrior attain physical fitness necessary to complete training. It's important to remember though, fitness is only a slice of what it takes to successfully complete training. On the other hand, for those simply looking for a PT challenge, this book will certainly fit that bill.Need assistance in meeting your fitness goals, go to [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars The best.
All I can say is that this workout got me into the greatest shape of my life.I did the workout my senior year in high school and gained 15 pounds of pure muscle.I went from doing 13 pullups to 25 after the workout, and from 42 pushups to 100.Definite increase in chest size and some in arm size as well.Abs are now well defined. But that is not the best part. No, the best part is the unstoppable confidence that you gain from doing the workout - after this, I felt like I could do ANYTHING I set my mind to.Trust me, this workout is not easy, but it IS entirely doable.Just thinking back to the lonely nights where I was mentally and physically exhausted, having completed 60 pullups, 150 pushups, 300 situps, 100 dips...only to know that I was only halfway done...and pushing THROUGH that mental barrier gave me the utmost gratification. You feel powerful after each workout, knowing that you are doing something that the average man could not even dream of, and knowing that YOU possess the self-discipline to make yourself great is the most wonderous benefit that you will walk away with...if you complete it.

This book is not only trains your body, but your mind as well.Do it.Hooyah!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent results
I've used this program for several years as part of my PT training cycle, and even as Ranger school prep with outstanding results. If you need a program that takes you away from the weights or you are bored easily with your workout, his program will push you out of your comfort bubble and keep you interested, especially when you see the results. ... This now-classic tale of SEAL combat action in Vietnam marked Dick Couch's debut as a novelist in 1990 and sold more than 100,000 copies. Hailed for its authenticity, it was the first novel about Navy SEALs to be written by one of their own. Couch, a SEAL platoon leader in the Mekong Delta from 1970 to 1971, includes gripping descriptions of dangerous operations that continue to attract a broad audience, with many bestselling authors calling his book a sensational story they can't put down. 5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opener
This is the first book I've read from this author, but I will definitely be reading more.Fictional story on a Navy SEAL team in Viet Nam, but really opened my eyes to a war that was before my time.It kept me interested.Because of this book I am going to read more of this type of book, even though it was tough subject matter, I really really liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book by one of my favorite authors.
I've bought and read and throughly enjoyed everything Couch has written. This was his first and I think his best (fiction).Buy this.Read it, then buy another. That's what I did.Now I'm sitting here waiting for him to write another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seal Team One
Captain Couch mentions in his introduction (updated from the original) that he felt this, his first effort, was his best. He may be right. This is the first book of his that I've read and it is excellent. I'm currently working on his "Sheriff of Ramadi" - his latest effort. Since I'm only in the third chapter, I'm not ready to review this book but so far, it's pretty dry. As for "Seal Team One", the semi-fictional (more fact than fiction in my opinion) story of a Seal team in country is fascinating and an eye opener. Since I was in the Navy in the same area during the same period (and beyond), I can relate to the story quite easily. I was not a Seal and this story is an excellent description of another war that was going on at the same time and in the same place as the war I fought. But if the reader is not former military or has no combat experience (give a prayer of thanks), this book will still make a terrific introduction to the soul of a warrior. You will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Seal Novel
Dick Couch was a REAL navy Seal officer, (vs the usual phoneys who are crawling out of the woodwork). This is probably the best novel ever written about Viet Nam seal operations.I rate it up there with "The Element of Surprise"with "Element" being possible the best non-fiction book. Couch's other fiction books are , unfortunatly not as good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping and intense.Gave me nightmares.
This was a bit slow to start, but quickly evolved into a book that was difficult to put down.It did an excellent job of describing combat situations that could only be handled by individuals as tough and tenacious as Navy SEALs.I rate it as one of the best military action books I've had the pleasure to read in a long time.In fact, I 've made it a point to seek out other books by this author. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and engaging nonfiction
Navy SEALs represents children's nonfiction at its best. The book is divided into three easy to read chapters that explain what a navy seal is, what weapons they use and the life of a navy SEAL.Vocabulary words are in bold with a glossary at the end of the book. The photographs are detailed and interesting. The photographs accurately reflect the content of the book by adding meaning, depth, and understanding to the information provided. My fourth grade students read Navy SEALs repeatedly because they like the engaging photographs and interesting content.

Product Description

"Fractions of a second in time.
What amazing violence can be meted out in
the blink of an eye."

In the mid-nineteen sixties, Harry Constance made a life-altering journey that led him out of Texas and into the jungles of Vietnam. As a young naval officer, he went from UDT training to the U.S. Navy's newly formed SEAL Team Two, and then straight into furious action. By 1970, he was already the veteran of three hundred combat missions and the recipient of thirty-two military citations, including three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

Good To Go is Constance's powerful, firsthand account of his three tours of duty as a member of America's most elite, razor-sharp stealth fighting force. It is a breathtaking memoir of harrowing missions and covert special-ops -- from the floodplains of the Mekong Delta to the beaches of the South China Sea -- that places the reader in the center of bloody ambushes and devastating firefights. But his extraordinary adventure goes even farther -- beyond 'Nam -- as we accompany Constance and the SEALs on astonishing missions to some of the world's most dangerous hot-spots . . . and experience close-up the courage, dedication, and unparalleled skill that made the U.S. Navy SEALs legendary.

Includes 8 Pages of SEAL Team Action Photos!

5-0 out of 5 stars Memoir of a Navy Seal in Vietnam.
This book revealed things about the Vietnam War I'd never read before.Because I'm interested in the history of the Vietnam War, I've real plenty of books about it.This one is in my top 5!This is the true story of Navy Seals during the Vietnam War told from one member's perspective. He mentions the trip to Vietnam, terrifying moments under fire (especially during the 1st Tet Offensive), and night patrols. There is just enough detail to avoid being too cumbersome.Plus, readers will see that the CIA may have already known about the 1st Tet Offensive and kept the military in the dark!I especially liked a mention of the things they did while on liberty. All in all I recommend this book to anyone looking for more information on the Navy Seals activities during the Vietnam War.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Harry Constance was certainly one of the bravest soldiers operating in Vietnam as a Seal. His story is superb. Heroism flows donwn all the pages of the book. What a great soldier !
This book is one of the best books I have ever read about Vietnam war. I listed it in my French profile listmania on amazon.fr.

Curtis M."Butch" Ashton was my uncle. Youngest of four bothers on my fathers side. Before joining the Navy he lived with us. It was like having an instant big bother that I idolized. I was just a small boy when he went off to Vietnam not yet really old enough to understand the dangers of war until that night in Dec. 1969 when my mother told me Butch was dead. Butch's metals and burial flag are proudly on display in my home today. I have two teenage sons of my own now and we all enjoyed reading/sharing "Good To Go".

Thank you Harry for sharing with us a part of his life with you and the Seals in Vietnam.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Journey
This is a thoroughly enjoyable, fast paced read.It is an incredible story that races through a 20 year Navy career but is able to keep it's main focus on the Vietnam tours.Very exciting and very well written.Mr. Constance deserves his medals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Liar or merely a poor writer?
I had high hopes for this book, having enjoyed Marcinko's various highly entertaining forays (most, after "Rogue Warrior" clearly labeled as "fiction") and "Patches" Watson's book, but I had misgivings about this from page one. Evidently, Harry's neighbor (the "as told to") was fascinated with Constance's war stories (and, really, who wouldn't be?), interviewed him and changed the tall tales to the first-person perspective. I found the technique clunky and obvious whenever the "real" writer's voice conflicted with the tales of derring-do (e.g., misidentifying the M-203 grenade launcher, calling it a ".two-oh-three, as though that was the launcher's caliber, or something, clearly shows the writer slavishly scribbling down as much of the stories as he could and doing little fact checking).

Now let's face it, anybody who had the balls to not only volunteer for membership in an elite group and who survived multiple tours in Vietnam is worthy of respect, but I actually wasn't terribly surprised to see that Constance's many accusation leveled at SEAL teammate Charlie Watson were untrue and he was forced to apologize in court (and pay nearly half a million dollars in damages). Much of the tone of the book seems to come from a sour-grapes guy with some scores to settle against former friends, colleagues and lovers. It's a shame that the obvious fraud and mean-spirited tone here taints the real-life Vietnam SEAL team heroics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best translation
Another reviewer complained that this is based on the 'least popular' version of the story. They're right in only the loosest sense. Fashions change: that 'least popular' version was the dominant version of the story for most of its history! Moreover, the full (four book) version of the Shapiro text also draws on that version.
But the sure clue is that Pearl Buck's piece of orientalist flim-flam, which distorts the story and squeezes it into an unnatural idiom, gets rated higher (and the J H Jackson translation, which while poor, is nevertheless preferable to Buck's, is unmentioned). The Dent-Young's version is immeasurably better written, and it is clear that they have been at pains to try to capture the immediacy and wit of the original: no easy task. I think in the first book they succeed admirably. While later books have some problems (the names are always a sticking point) the first book has a verve that draws you in. They have also smoothed out some peculiarities present in previous translations so that there are no 'blips' where you can't work out why something happened or where something came from.
American readers with an intolerance for anything but US culture may have a problem with the British idiom occasionally employed in a desire to capture the naturalness of the original, but in that case why would such readers want to read a Chinese book?

1-0 out of 5 stars Translation not true to the original, used the least popular
The translators used the least popular copy for their translation(There are several different versions of this book, this being the least popular because of the poor quality of the last 50 chapters). Not only is the version a poor one, but the translations are poor as well.Compared with Sydney Shapiro's translation(The Outlaws of the Marsh), you will find that this is more like the work of a student. To rate the three different translations, I give Sydney's 100, 50 for Pearl Bucke's and 15 for this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun translation of a classic
It's too bad that this translation doesn't get more attention. The father and son team brings this classic to light in a fun and engaging manner. Even better, unlike many translations, they manage to keep the poetry at the same level of aptitude as the prose.

The original itself is a classic of Chinese Literature, although not as powerful and comprehesensive as Dreams of Red Mansions. Still it's a fun read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a classical piece of Chinese literature that has the impact of a Holy Grail / King Arthur. This is perhaps the most read piece of Chinese literature in history. The characters and the stories reveal the Chinese intellect and culture. This is a "cannot miss" reading for anyone who loves folklore and enjoys a subtle humor. Divided into stories, each carries the moral meanings of the day, all virtues are explored, and stories all interrelate. Heroes always win, but only of the morals are upheld! A fantastic beginning and a character of the Novel style hundreds of years before writing conventions. ... Read more
