1-0 out of 5 stars Random Babbling, No Information
This short book is very poorly written, which is annoying enough.(It get worse.)The author does not believe in S.A.D. and comes up with a silly little acronym of his own for what he personally experienced. If you actually suffer from S.A.D., you will not find any help here.Even if you don't suffer from S.A.D., you will be bored to tears.

The author mentions using a light box for light deprivation, which is the main cause of S.A.D.He does not, however, understand that the intensity of the light has little to do with light therapy. The quality of the light does. For light healing to take place, the light must enter uncovered, open eyes through the pupils. If a person is wearing eyeglasses, contacts, or (as the author suggests) has his/her eyes shut, light can't work it's magic.

Our guru is also "going to" try using a blue/white light box combination.(?!)He has written a book about S.A.D. and hasn't even tried various light therapies. This proves to me, right off, that he is not in any way qualified to give advice to others. He talks a lot about walking a mile in another person's shoes, yet he hasn't even experimented with light therapy.(You can get a full-spectrum light box here at Amazon for a very reasonable price, by the way.)

In short, the author suggests listening to some woman's stress-relief hypnosis download, getting a prescription for a toxic amount of vitamin D, using St. John's Wort (which has never proved to be anything better than benign), listening to upbeat music, and staring at a light box. That's the book in short, folks. The rest is poorly-written and pathetically-boring filler.

Don't waste your time on this.I've worked with people suffering from S.A.D. for twenty-five years, and if you don't want to wade through volumes of information, try getting an inexpensive light box and staring at it for at least twenty minutes a day, make sure you get some kind of exercise to increase endorphin levels, eat in-season food when possible, and spend time outside with "naked" eyes, even on cloudy days.

Because of the odd mix of unresearched advice and suggested toxic substances, I'm afraid this book will do more harm than good.I'm returning my copy this morning. ... Read more

Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of authoritative documents on the subject of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and crave sweets and starchy foods. They may also feel depressed. Though symptoms can be severe, they usually clear up. This condition is seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It usually happens during the winter. A less common type of SAD happens in the summer. What causes SAD? Some experts think it's a lack of sunlight during winter, when the days are shorter. In the United States, it is much more common in northern states. Light therapy, in which patients expose themselves to a special type of light for 30 minutes every day often helps. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a $19.95 value! The Encyclopedia presents a collection of official documents about a wide range of medical topics, diseases, illnesses, health and wellness. There is vital information from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Cancer Institute, and more. Topics covered include: major diseases, including cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, blood diseases and disorders, lung diseases, and neurological disorders such as dementia and epilepsy * CDC Health Topics A to Z, Foodborne Illnesses, Infants and Children, Injuries, Occupational Health, Older Adults, Women * CDC Travelers' Health - Destinations, Vaccinations, Diseases, Mosquito, Tick, Food, Water, Clinics, Yellow Book, Children, Airplanes, Cruise Ships, Special Needs, Relief Workers * Dietary Guidelines * NIH A to Z from abnormalities to X-rays.Since navigating the Internet to find additional non-governmental medical information can be confusing, we've also provided our exclusive "Guide to Leading Medical Websites" with updated links to 67 of the best sites for medical information! Excerpt: Melatonin (pronounced ( listen)), also known chemically as N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, is a naturally occurring compound found in animals, plants, and microbes. In animals, circulating levels of melatonin vary in a daily cycle, thereby regulating the circadian rhythms of several biological functions. Many biological effects of melatonin are produced through activation of melatonin receptors, while others are due to its role as a pervasive and powerful antioxidant, with a particular role in the protection of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. Melatonin in plants has multiple roles including regulation of the photoperiod, in plant defense responses, and as a scavenger of reactive oxygen species.
