5-0 out of 5 stars Really Nice
My hymnal came new--black, as opposed to my church's blue ones, which is nice in case I want to bring it to church with me. Don't have to worry about people thinking I'm stealing a hymnal. It's beautiful; I adore singing hymns. I don't remember lyrics well, which is one of the reasons I got it. Really thankful to have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Hymnal Book with Music
This has all the hymns known in the christian community....Amazing Grace, Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus, I surrender all, Rock of Ages....The Old Rugged Cross.I'm a pianist and this has all the music notation for over 500 hymns. This is a hardback.Keep in mind, if you're a pianist it can be hard to keep the pages from turning.I use paper clips or you can also place your bible on one of the edges to keep it from closing.

I like christian music in general, but hymns are very special to me and really make my heart sing.Everytime I play these in piano, I think of my mom, more of reason why I treasure these hymns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astounding Errors, the Followers of C.T. Russell
It is a gently led and read book, but its title might have been: Truly there are none so blind as those who will not see. Buy this book and you will refute some who come door to door knocking and proselizing a false faith. They need to see the true light of the Christian faith, and as long as they are afraid to examine the truth, for their faith consigns them only to what they write, then you might only have one shot to set them free of the lies and deceptions that make a saddened reality for the followers of C.T. Russell. Russell was a failed prophet, why do any follow him then? This is indeed a great mystery. The truth shall set you free, this book helps proves the truth. ... Read more

From its beginnings, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has emphasized apocalyptic prophecy and the role of Roman Catholicism in the biblical books of Daniel and Revelation. In this first major study of the topic, Bruinsma looks at the origin and unique features of Seventh-day Adventist attitudes toward the Roman Church, examines factors which explain these continuing views, and analyzes Adventism's place in Protestantism. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bigotry under the spotlight
I really have to hand it to Reinder Bruinsma for tackling such a topic, especially as an adventist. There is more than a wealth of an indepth look at the early years of this sect known as seventh-day adventists. If anything else, I've never seen such detail taken in explaining the mood and events leading up to the sects founding in 1963.

A more than excellant look at pre adventist america and the early sda movement.I don't think there could have been more citations, which makes this book a great source for anyone wanting to look into the history of seventh-day adventism.

As the book goes on we read about a growing tolerance for catholicsim from most all main stream protestant groups, but no mercy from our friends in the adventist camp.I really appreciate the non bias tone of our author, which makes this read more like a field study of sociology than an emotionally charged rant which most all sda literature falls into.

I found it odd and refreshing at the same time that Reinder basically comes to the conclusion that the whole tiara and 666 arguement is bogus.I thought it very telling of the integrity of the denomination that they still cling to documents that have been proven to be a fraud, just to uphold this comical tabloid prophecy.I have a great deal of repect for Reinder for admitting this.

As the book goes on we hear about the history of Catholic schools which amongst other reasons, were started to protect children from anti-catholics.And we get a brief bit about different politicians who where catholic. At this point the environment shifts from theological to some what political.

Reinder quotes Ellen Whites pleas to show compasion for "catholics", all the while she trashes the "catholic church'.Yet history shows, the cats out of the bag, and anti-catholicism is just part of the sda culture.

But in the end, to make a long story short we come to the conclusion that adventists are too attached to their original prophecy predictions, as tired and wanting as they are, to have any hope of being tolerant of the Catholic faith.

This book is an excellent look at the rise of the sda church from1830's-1965.Although I found the ending and concluson to be a bit anti climatic.I look forward to reading the next installment. This is truely an interesting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dale Ratzlaff: Top in his League
Although most SDA members will shun this book, I invite every Christian of all denominations to read this important book regarding the major doctrines of the SDA church and how they are different from mainstream Christianity.Dale Ratzlaff was a fourth generation SDA minister who had access to the earliest writings and doctrines of their church and learned the "truth" the hard way about the oppressive and misleading doctrines that some SDA members hold (especially the Sabbath keeping, the remnant belief, and soul sleep).I strongly recommend this book and his other book "Sabbath in Crisis" for all Christians.

4-0 out of 5 stars Acknowledges both the strengths and weaknesses of the Seventh Day Adventist church
I admit that I am biassed. I have been reading the Bible, reading books and other material provided by my Seventh Day Adventist friends, and reading books written by people who have left the Seventh Day Adventist church. I love each of the books in the Bible, both Old and New Testament, especially those that I have thoroughly read from beginning to end. I enjoy the fellowship and bible study with my friends yet do not agree with the way that some of my friends seem to have taken some verses out of their original context to prove their beliefs. As I began reading this book "Cultic Doctrine of Seventh-Day Adventists", I felt relaxed as the author acknowledgedmany of the strengths of the Seventh Day Adventist communities. I was looking forward to reading a satisfactory explanation of the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary, and also the investigative judgment. What I found instead was that by accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour, I will love to obey God's commands. I had already reached the same conclusion myself before reading this book! I felt as though the author Dale Ratzlaff was standing alongside me empathically understanding how uncomfortable I feel about the church doctrine, and encouraging me in my faith in the true gospel of Jesus Christ.
The author seems to me to have used the Bible quotations in the correct context. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What is a cult?
If Seventh Day Adventists are a cult then Baptist are a cult, Catholics even more so.

Main Entry: cult
Pronunciation: 'k<
Function: noun
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: French & Latin; French culte, from Latin cultus care, adoration, from colere to cultivate -- more at WHEEL
1 : formal religious veneration : WORSHIP(all churchs fall in this category right?)
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents (same here)
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents(Who defines orthodox?Do orthodox jews consider other jews as cults?)
4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator (I guess SDA do fall into this category a bit, but most of the health message ideas come from the Bible.)
5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion(Some SDA's fall into this category, but not the church as a whole.Again this applies to people that think their church leader is holy. Some TD Jakes followers, Creflo Dollar, and others. All are sinners saved by Grace).

1-0 out of 5 stars The SDA church is not a cult....
Listing the Adventist church as a cult is a BIG mistake and shows total ignorance of the doctrines of the church and Bible.

What's funny is, just because the SDA Church differs with mainline christianity, people like to label them a cult. Jesus was put in the "cult leader" category when He was here on earth...by the "religious" MAJORITY.

I would like to submit that if Jesus were on earth today, the majority of even professed Christians would not want Him preaching in thier church. He would not be welcome because He would preach all 10 of the commandments just as God gave them originally....and that includes seventh day Sabbath (saturday) worship.

The SDA church has only tried to bring people back the the Bible, and what always happens is somebody gets thier toes stepped on because they only want to keep 9 (or less) of the 10 commandments...or they dont want to keep them at all.

Fact is, the majority, both christian and non-christian, will never line up with the Bible teachings. The majority always takes the smooth, easy way. Mainline christianity is not following the Bible and points fingers at those who do.

If you want to see a cult, you need to look at the largest church in existence because it is also the largest cult in existence. This one should be easy for anyone to figure out.

Seventh Day Adventists dont teach anything new, we teach what the church reformers taught...that we need to get back to the Bible and not traditions of men. But christianity at large only wants smooth things.

If you want new age teachings then look at "Left Behind" and the Secret Rapture scenario. This was put out by that "cult" church described in revelation as the "Scarlet Harlot"...the "Mother" church.

This was done as the "counter" reformation, to counteract the damage that was done to that antichrist church of Bible prophecy by those who identified her CORRECTLY as the church of Babylon. And the pitiful thing about this is, Protestants, by and large, are teaching the doctinal heresies of the antichrist while thinking they teach the Bible.

If you want to learn truth you need to look elsewhere besides LaHaye, Jenkins, Hal Lindsay and these others who have Left the Truth Behind in thier books and teachings. It's popular but it's not true...it's like a big silly cartoon.

Try the books by Steve Wohlberg called Truth Left Behind or Left Behind Deception, or Exploding the Isreal Deception.

Learn More About the Great Hymns of the Church!

For many worshipers, hymn singing is a mere routine in the church service, accepted but not necessarily enjoyed. For others, the pleasure of making a joyful noise to God often obscures the words that are being sung, and thereby this essential part of worship loses its full significance.

The Companion to the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal seeks to remedy these two defects by calling attention in particular to the words of the hymns so that the hymns will be much more appreciated and their spiritual effect heightened. Comments, where appropriate, have also been made on the tunes, so that both authors and composers will come to life, so to speak, In this way, attention will be focused on the hymn-singing part of divine service.

The Companion may also serve as a resource for ministers and lay persons to illustrate their sermons and to enable them to make a wise choice of hymns.

  • Seventh-day Adventist Hymnody
  • Commentaries on Hymns
  • Biographies
  • Seventh-day Adventist Authors and Composers
