A little book
I just give it 3 stars, but it is what it says. The "Little"... This book is in a microformat. No photos, just some illustrations, but it give you an idea how you can make vintage bodice.

The Little Bodice Book
The Little Bodice Book shows how to take a mid-20th century bodice pattern with bust darts and decorate it to give the impression of historical style.This is a fine book for school and community theater.It should be especially helpful for the novice seamstress who wants a Halloween or partycostume.Re-enactors and others who need histoically correct constructionand reproduction techniques should seek elsewhere.

excellent for amateur costumers
Covers basic bodice construction thoroughly with enough detail in the instruction to support basic theater or festival-type needs. Shows in b/w hand-drawn diagrams how to modify the basic pattern to depict differentclasses of bodices, in the eras of 1600 (Elizabethan), 1650 (Restoration),1770 (Rococo), and Victorian. A simple size and measurement chart andpattern dimensions for a basic size 8 bodice simplify the decision of howbig to cut the pieces. Detailing info includes making/using coveredcording, grommets, size-adjustable bodices, placket openings, sleeve andcuff variations, sleeve cap additions, and boning placement. Emphasis is onconstruction, not historical reference, and the author has obviously gonethrough many bodices step-by step. Professionals will not find much here toget excited about, but if you're just trying to build yourself a costumewithout hiring a dressmaker, or are a wardrobe volunteer for communitytheater, this itty bitty workbook will be just the thing you need to walkyou through the process. If you've looked in catalogs for period patterns,you know they're about three times the cost of this book (when they'reavailable), and their instructions tend to be hit or miss. Save yourselfthe long wait for pattern shipment and be guided through thebodice-building process with no pain and lots of confidence-boostingdiagrams. Caveat: brand new sewers shouldn't start here - instead take abasic class or enlist a talented friend to do the sewing. This book doesn'thave an elementary glossary or substitute for a rudimentary knowledge ofsewing, but intermediate sewers will do fine. And it's small enough to tuckinto your purse when you head to the fabric store, so your fabricrequirements are right there handy. All in all, well written and drawn.This would be the book I'd lend to a friend about to make her first periodbodice.

Not Empressed
I bought this book thinking I was going to get some great ideas to revamp some of my outdated clothes that I own. I did not find one thing in it that was very helpful, all the recustomizing looked outdated and it looked like a do it yourself project. I would not recommend this book if you are seriously looking to update your wardrobe.

rather dull and uninspiring...
i am so glad i got this book from the library instead of wasting money.the ideas in this book are all pretty mundane and have been done to death in recent years.projects like adding faux fur to a cardigan are a yawn, and the projects are pretty girly and precious.if you're more of a rocker with tastes that require more of an edge, buy subversive seamster.their ideas are fresh and cool and almost every single one is something i haven't seen or thought of before.this book might be good for a sweet teenager who likes conservative clothes.

disappointing
"The Little Corset Book: A Workbook on Period Underwear" was a bit disappointing for me as I expected something more informative. The book was very simple and resembled a children's book. I would recommend it only to those who have never made a corset before. Even then it lacks information.

A good overview
This is a good overview of corset building. But be clear - this is truly and "little" book. It's really a glorified pamphlet. It has very nice, concise building instructions for a few corset designs. There is some "different" stuff in here that I haven't found elsewhere. For example a nice way to create a finished looking one-layer corset. Also, she explains how to sew in a waist tape without the seams showing on the exterior. There are some finishing suggestions in there too. I think it's a good companion book or a resource for a more accomplished sewer looking to get into corsets (ie. someone who does not need much detailed guidance).

I had made the Laughing Moon Dore corset by the time I bought this book, and I also own the How to Build and Fit a Victorian Corset DVD, by JoAnn Peterson. Bonnie Holt Ambrose isn't telling me much I haven't already seen, but she does have enlargeable patterns for three corsets, and she's basically reinforcing what I know: corsets are tricky and the best way to learn how to make them is to make them. Let your first one be an experiment, and in the worst case, you can cut it up and re-use the steel.

Reviews of some patterns suggest that Laughing Moon has perhaps the best instructions, and between that and the DVD I had about as much information about MAKING a corset as it was possible to get. If you're using a different company's pattern, or coming to this cold, or with a very limited budget, then BHA's book will probably help you out. If you're inclined to make your own patterns, the book will be useful. If you will have to make lots of different-styled corsets for theatrical events and need a starter pattern, this book will be useful. If you want historical exactitude, keep looking. In terms of data-for-the-dollar, this little book is worth everything I paid for it.

I certainly don't think the book is "rubbish" in any way. Corsets are probably the trickiest garment I've ever made. There is, IMO, no way to "get it exact" on the first pass, because even making TWO muslins, the garment acted VERY differently once the steel was in place. It's not about the pattern, exactly. It's about the pattern plus the steel plus the lacing plus the individual's body. Some of us squish more than others.

For the record, the book also contains instructions for a chemise and drawers.

You might also want to google the author and visit her website to see the kind of costume work she does. If her work parallels yours to any extent, the book is likely to be all the more useful to you.

Three stars because: It's not a great book. I save five stars for books that change my life, and this one won't. It's tiny (4" x 6"). It's good value for the money.

This book is absolute rubbish!
I was exicited when I received this book, as it looked like it was full of useful information.Upon closer inspection, I found an astonishing amount of typos and misplaced information.Also, the author draws her patterns with seam allowances, which makes initially fitting the pieces together distracting, given the vague measurements she provides.She tells the reader incorrect information about the quantities of fabric to cut.She gives the reader poor information about how to cut a facing pattern.I'm surprised she found a publisher for this rubbish!I have done more research on this subject and it was recommended to me by experienced corset makers to stay away from this useless book and to get Jean Hunnisett's Period Costumes for Stage and Screen, 1500-1800.In fact, all of her books are much more thorough and better thought out.

Nice little book, but could be better
This is a nice little information book if you are just starting to look for corset info. Instructions are vague at times. No expense was put into this little book. The size chart goes to size 6, so you'll have to do thefiguring if looking for smaller and doll sizes. Materials chart looks to bemisplaced and put on page 12. A Love For Sewing
Love the book! Everything is simple and easy to follow. And if there's something that you don't quite understand, the author is available to you via email! It only takes her a day or so to reply.

Not metric
Yes its my own fault i should have checked the reviews more thoroughly before buying this book, but i only seemed to read the positive ones.Book is very thorough, and has ALOT of info, but it ISN'T in metric, which is REALLY disappointing.And even though i can probably apply the same formula, the effort in converting into metric just makes me want to close it and put it back on the shelf.If your used to working in feet/inches I think it would be a great book to buy....if not, save your money!

Worth investing on for a lifetime of fashion design and pattermaking!
I ordered this book and it came in perfect condition. i love that this was a rare hardcover bound edition because my college only sell the ones in a binder which rips so easily. This makes my book stand a part from others because it looks a lot more expensive. The Drawings in the book are very nice and modernized and they are fairly easy to understand for pattern students. The designs featured are actually pretty stylish, unlike old books with 50's styles that no one wear now a day. The DVD wasn't super helpful and only includes additional stuff the book didn't cover. Love it overall and plan to keep this the rest of my career in fashion design.

Excellent book for creating commercial designs
This book is helpful in guiding first time commercial pattern making.It gives suppliers and necessary equipment.I will definately keep it as a reference book.It is written at a very high level of instructions.Sometimes it takes me several readings to understand with the instructions.I have sewn for 40 years, and have a good knowledge basis, and this book is teaching me quite a bit.Very helpful!

Fabulous Fit
It would be so wonderful and easy to buy a commercial pattern that just fits.To be able to cut the cloth, sew it and have a well-fitting, pretty outfit in minimal time is the goal of this sewer. The realization, however, was that I had to "pay my dues" and learn how to adjust a pattern. It's been two weeks of watching on-line videos and reading articles about measuring.I ordered "Fabulous Fit" and it is a comprehensive checklist of what the sewer needs to do to alter a pattern,This is a helpful, diagnostic tool.The suggested pattern styles for different body types is welcome.Good book!

New edition not exactly improved
My college level Pattern Alteration and Fitting class is using this book as a text.The instructor has allowed students to come in with the previous edition, and so it's easy to go back and forth to see what has been changed.For the good, the instructor has been making us do the alterations mapped out in the book on half scale paper models first, and the information on the pages has been letter perfect, not to mention the diagrams showing one where to cut, slash, and spread, or fold to adjust the pattern piece.Very, very helpful trying this info out on a mock-up first before attempting to do it in fiber.

Really, the issue that I have is that in older editions Judith Rasband was the sole author and included photographs of suggested ready to wear fashions for each type of figure "flaw/challenge."There aren't so many of these in the newest edition.Of course, the old edition screamed 80's fashion, so that probably has a lot to do with it, but there are young ladies in my class who are absolute beginners at sewing, and the diagrams in the book that only have arrows designating that the design emphasis should be higher, lower, in, or out on body parts in question makes absolutely no sense to those girls.It is a lot easier having a photo showing what real high-waisted trousers look like on a long waisted figure (for those who grew up wearing nothing but low-rise pants) or longer hemlines to cover up problem calves.I suppose that Liechty intended that cutting the majority of "fashion plates" out of the book would make it more utilitarian in the long run, but trust me when I say that there are people who have problems visualizing and need a lot of examples in photos to spell out multiple suggested solutions before it makes sense to them.

I have been doing basic sewing a very long time (as in don't deviate from the Butterick pattern), and so the other beef I have is how do I apply these alterations from the diagrams in this book, which appear to be copied from fitting shells, to fashion patterns?I would recommend "Fantastic Fit for Every Body" by Gale Grigg Hazen to help transfer the important fundamentals shown in this book to fashion pattern pieces on real bodies.The Hazen book has good reference photographs as well as drawings, and the two work well in tandem.

Fabulous Fit is a good piece of reference, but it's not for someone who just learned to sew recently.If you have a well-experienced sewing buddy who can help you with the info in this book, then go ahead and buy it with the intention of having your sewing buddy help you out.

Not an alteration book
Don't be misled by the title or other reviews.This is not a pattern alteration book (though each body anomaly has a useless little picture of one pattern piece with little pictures of scissors all around it showing where they want you to cut said pattern piece.)This book can be helpful as long as you understand what it really does and this is what you are looking for.

The book basically lists each body type and then shows you 5 or so garments that would be a good choice for covering the body flaw.As one reviewer said, many of the garments shown are not currently in style, but that is not to be counted against the book as much as it is against the garment industry.Some styles cover certain body shapes better than others and it is unfortunate for you when the style that looks best on you is not currently in-vogue.

The book is helpful in steering you to make correct garment choices for your body characteristics.The challenge is to purchase or make these garments in up-to-date looking patterns.

If you are looking for an excellent pattern alteration book, look no further than the excellent "Fast Fit" by Sandra Betzina.

By the way, don't pay any more than 10 or so dollars for this book.

An average book
I bought this book for my sewing class; however, I don't like it because it doesn't have as much substance as the "Fitting & Pattern Alterations" book.In addition, it is over-priced.I like chapters 2 and 3 best out of the whole book.There is a typo on page 3, bullet #4.Most of the clothing sketches are dated; I've hardly seen anyone who dresses in those styles that were illustrated in the book. I personally don't believe that anyone can wear any style because each person has a different figure shape, height and weight.As for the style tip, I'd rather pick up a good how to dress fashion book.

Fitting Isn't Easy
No matter how a sewer tries, learning to fit can be a difficult task.Judith Rasband tries to explain fitting in a different way than the other fit books do.It is worthwhile reading to explore a different point of view on the subject. ... Read more

A Great Guide for Costumers!
Great book to have if you are setting up a theatrical costume shop.It covers all the bases, telling you what products you will need to run your shop smoothly.A basic knowledge of sewing is needed to utilize the patterns or draping suggestions in this book. This guide can't be beat when explaining modifying fabric (dyeing, distressing,etc.), as well as padding and undergarments, hats and masks.A must have for any costumer!

this is the best book out there!
I am so happy to have this book - it gives information in detail about every material known to man to make costumes and props.It also gives great detailed instructions on uses for these materials and wonderful examples at the back of the book.It is helpful to have some costume/prop experience and there are companion volumes referred to if you don't, but this is THE book to start out with.

So many ideas so little time
Not the best for what I do but oh the ideas! I was looking for more historical information and ways to research but what i got in this book was a great trade-off. Basic and advanced information of costume construction and how to get a look when the materials you need can not be found. Awesome. I use it over and over!

BRILLIANT!!
After reading the reviews that were already posted, I almost did not buy this book.I am so glad that I went ahead and took the chance.My young girls and I love this book.They are 9 and 6 and are very crafty, I myself love to sew and create "one-of-a-kind" things.The patterns do not need detailed instructions, if you can cut a square with given measurements, you can create on of these bags - my girls have.If you are looking to create something fun and all your own, you will probably like this bag too.

Outdated Bags
Sorry to say the book didn't have great pictures and the purses were not great or even inspiring.The instuctions were good but the purses in the book were not something I would make or recommend to anyone. The saving grace for the book is that some of the instructions can be used in creating my own bag construction.

Questionable embellishment
I was hoping for bags, well made bags with patterns for a variety of shapes etc and some interior fittings, but this book is much concerned with embellishing (Sometimes way over the top) some very simple shapes.Not an interior pocket to be seen just inside-out linings and outside flourishes.There ismore space devoted to printing on fabric with an apple than on sewing together the purse it decorates.If you need to know how to sew on ruffles, this is for you, but if you want to know how to make good, sturdy bags I think you can look elsewhere. ... This is a Great Book!
This is a great book, easy to follow instructions with pictures of what you need to do!These projects go together easily with a little practice on my first piece -easy to adapt my own fabric design to personalize the baskets, I've made.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to add a new craft into their spare time.

Depends on what you enjoy doing
The reviews of this book are almost all good to great. That is because the book is well done and illustrated.

Whether you will absolutely love this book like a lot of the reviewers did depends on how much you like to sew on a sewing machine. The process is simple and stress free, but also time consuming and involves a lot of strip cutting and clothes line wrapping with 1 inch wide strips of fabric. I mean 100 feet or more of clothesline. I mean yards of fabric strips.And you cannot wrap endlessly, after a few yards of wrapping, it is time to sew what you wrapped up before it gets too loose or gets tiny pleats in it.

You need a decent sewing machine with a good zigzag capability, (three step zig zag a plus) ability to sew through thick fabrics without constant needle breakage is definitely essential. You need sewing machine needles for denim sewing. And patience to guide this under the machine and shape it into various bowls, purses, lidded containers and whatever else you like.

Washing the items is iffy, because of the cotton cord, it may shrink, and it will be hard to dry so you probably would not make place mats although the technique is really good for place mats.

Although I like to sew with a machine, and make things, after a while it got tedious on my first item. I rate the book highly, but probably I will not be making many items from it due to boredom factor.

Rediculous looking things
Most of the purses in this book were so foolish looking I wouldn't use them if someone gave them to me, much less waste my time to make them.I was looking for bags to make and sell but I have found better ideas for free on the internet.To this books credit, it does give good instruction on construction basics such as pockets and linings.

Where are the patterns?
Handmade Bags is full of unique and gorgeous bags to make from a variety of materials, with detailed step-by-step instructions, tons of photos, and an introduction to basic sewing at the beginning.

This would be a fantastic book, BUT and this is a big BUT-there are no patterns.For the purses made out of alternative materials or knitted, this is not an issue, as the instructions and photos clearly show how to make the purse.For the sewn purses there is a small photo of a grid with a pattern outline shown and each grid square equals 2".The book has a section on how to make and use patterns, but for less experienced sewers this can be daunting.For purses in a basic square or rectangle shape making a pattern would be easy, but several of these bags have unique shapes so creating a pattern for them would be more difficult.Although it states how much fabric is needed for each purse, it doesn't give cut dimensions.Making the purses without patterns would be ok if the directions stated "cut the shape with a 16" base ending with a 20" fan shaped top."

Handmade Bags sends a mixed-message.It is written in a basic, mostly easy to use format that breaks the process down, so even a novice sewer could make make one of these bags, but the lack of patterns or cutting dimensions pushes it into the realm of experienced sewers.This makes the book frustrating for folks like me with basic sewing skills, but no experience or time to learn to make patterns.

Poor purses
This book is really well presented with amazing pictures and is easy to read. If you have any knowledge of sewing and any interest in making handbags that appear professional this is not the book for you, I think it should be reclassified as a craft book for kids. If you're an adult save your money.

Cool ideas!
There are a lot of cool ideas in this book, along with 30 bag patterns for you to follow. In addition to traditional fabric handbags, here are several "wire bag" designs in this book.

Written by professional accessory designers, this book is full of clever and innovative ideas. However, in spite of the creativity, I did not find many bags I would actually make.

However, it is well written with many good sewing tips. It even includes a fully illustrated section on hand-sewing which I found very useful.
