Product Description
A groundbreaking book by the co-directors of one of the country's first women's sexual health clinics-destined to be an essential resource for women throughout the country.

According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, 43 percent of American women suffer from some kind of sexual dysfunction. And though the introduction of Viagra has increased attention to male sexual concerns, the problems women face are often ignored. For Women Only is the first book to offer a comprehensive exploration of female sexual dysfunction.

The co-directors of the Women's Sexual Health Clinic at Boston University Medical Center -- Jennifer Berman, a urologist, and her sister, Laura Berman, a sex therapist-draw on research and clinical findings to show that many of the physical problems that cause impotence in men can cause sexual dysfunction in women. In addition, many women experience diminished sexual response as they age, go through menopause, and after hysterectomies or other pelvic surgery.

Covering both physiological and psychological issues in a straightforward, sympathetic style, the Bermans provide authoritative, easy-to-understand information on the medical breakthroughs and treatments that can help women of all ages enjoy more fulfilling sex lives.
Amazon.com Review
Although Jennifer Berman, M.D., and Laura Berman, Ph.D., readily agree that "the most important sex organ in the human body is the brain," thelast thing they want anyone to believe is that all female sexualproblems are mental--quite the contrary. Findings gathered from their ownresearch and clinical practice show that, like men, women often undergophysical changes and challenges that lead to sexual dysfunction; in fact, nearly half of all women in the U.S. experience sexual problems at somepoint during their lifetime. Through their frank but personable discussionabout the female sexual response, sisters Jennifer (a urologist) and Laura(a sex therapist) virtually open their clinic doors to readers; they shareclient stories, fully describe their clinical patient-assessment process, provide an updated anatomy lesson, and offer practical suggestions forenhancing sexual pleasure.

As founders and co-directors of the Women's Sexual Health Clinic at BostonUniversity Medical Center, the Bermans have treated a variety of ailments, including loss of libido (due to medical factors, emotional issues, or menopause) and arousal and pain disorders. They address it here in plain, understandable words designed to empower women with better informationabout their bodies and the many factors that can affect sexual well-being.In a way, the book reads almost like a diary of their practice, bolsteredby the occasional critical essay (such as chapter 2, "The History ofFemale Sexuality," or chapter 6, "Sexuality Through the Life Cycle"). For Women Only is a sensitive, sensible, and timely take on a previously "pooh-poohed" subject--with encouraging conclusions that are long overdue. --LianeThomas ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy, reassuring read
I liked the book! I've found that most people I talk to don't know Jack about female (and probably male) anatomy and this book is a starting point to remedy that. Just for that fact I recommend reading it. There may be better books out there for that purpose. I haven't looked into that.

The authors also repeatedly stress the idea that female sexual dysfunction is not something we should put up with nor something we should think of as only in our heads. Of course it's an obvious conclusion that sexual dysfunction is almost always at least a combination of medical, emotional and relationship issues but that doesn't make it less profound and I think I needed to hear (or read) that every person is entitled to be thoroughly examined and if necessary (and possible) treated by a physician for sexual dysfunction. I will not let a `professional' send me home again because they are not willing to look into my problem. I will keep looking for a physician who cares and is qualified.

I found the style of the book easy to read and very encouraging. I also liked the fact that the authors repeatedly express that there is no norm to comply with when it comes to sexuality and that something is only a problem if it is a problem for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Berman's Book and Height of Arrogance and Ignorance
I was very unhapy with this book. I bought it under the guisethinking there would be new information on treating female sexual arousal disorder, a condition that has plagued my marriage over the last 8 years as my wife has had clitoral arousal and vaginal lubrication problems. There is nothing new in this book - except maybe a direct/indirect sales pitch for their clinic, and my wife and I are are contemplating a divorce due to her/our problem. The Berman's are NOT the experts they think they are - unless it's in the areas of hype and arrogance. Save your money and use the internet for information on Female Sexual Arousal Disorder, this book was a complete waste of money.

Product Description
In an effort to modernize criminal and civil investigations, early Bolsheviks gave forensic doctors - most of whom had been trained under the tsarist regime - new authority over issues of sexuality. Revolutionaries believed that forensic medicine could provide scientific and objective solutions to sexual disorder in the new society. "Bolshevik Sexual Forensics" explores the institutional history of Russian and Soviet forensic medicine and examines the effects of its authority when confronting sexual disorder. Healey compares sex crime investigations from Petrograd and Sverdlovsk in the 1920s to the numerous publications by forensic doctors and psychiatrists of the prerevolutionary and early Soviet periods to illustrate the role that these specialists played. In addition, Healey presents a fascinating look at how doctors diagnosed and treated hermaphroditism, showing how Soviet physicians revolutionized the standard scientific view in these cases by taking into account individual desire.

This study sheds light on unexplored radical and reactionary forces that shaped the Bolshevik 'sexual revolution' as lawmakers defined new ways of seeing sexual crime and disorder. Forensic doctors struggled to interpret the replacement of the age of consent with a standard of 'sexual maturity,' a designation that made female sexuality a collective 'resource,' not part of an individual's personality. 'Innocence,' 'experience,' and virginity played a major role in the expertise doctors furnished in rape and abuse trials. Psychiatrists recoiled from the language of sexual psychology in their investigations of sex criminals. Yet in the clinic, Soviet physicians probed the desires of the two-sexed citizen, whose psychology served as the basis for a distinctly modern approach to the 'erasure' of the hermaphrodite.

Healey concludes that the vision of men and women as equals after a 'sexual revolution' was undermined from the outset of the Soviet experiment. Law and medicine failed to protect women and girls from violence, and Soviet medicine's physiological and biological model of sexual citizenship erased the vision of sexual self-expression, especially for women. This groundbreaking study will appeal to Soviet historians and those interested in gender studies, sexuality, medicine, and forensics. It offers an enlightening view of Bolshevik forensic medicine and the 'sexual revolution'. ... Read more

Product Description

Secret Suffering: How Women's Sexual and Pelvic Pain Affects Their Relationships is the first book to explain how pelvic and sexual pain affects the lives of women (and men) and their partners in their own words/ The work also provides information on cutting-edge research and describes the most effective treatment modalities. Susan Bilheimer, coauthor, shares her own experiences as a patient who has gone down the painful, frustrating road of living with an illness that is often dismissed and not taken seriously. Robert J. Echenberg, M.D., coauthor, has treated over 700 women (and some men) with the disorder. He shares his decades of experience and expertise as a gynecologist and specialist in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain.

Not only does CPP interfere with a woman's physical and mental health, it can wreak havoc in family relationships, ruin careers, and wreck marriages. In the majority of cases, women suffer in silence. Even when they do seek medical help, what they find too often is inadequate care, as most doctors, even gynecological specialists, are not properly trained in recognizing, much less treating, all aspects of CPP.

Through classic, new, and emerging research, with statements from experts and interviews with CPP sufferers and their partners, Secret Suffering exposes and gives strong voice and compassionate understanding to this complex disorder. Most importantly, information on effective treatments for CPP, as well as the depression and other psychological fallout it may cause, are presented. Through Secret Suffering, Bilheimer and Echenberg finally shatter the silence, educate patients, build understanding, and demand that chronic pelvic and genital pain be taken seriously by the medical community.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book covers it all, really goes into the nitty gritty of these disorders!
I have read several books on this subject and this is by far my favorite. As someone that suffers with some of these conditions it was so validating the read the experiences of those with similiar tales and also to read that I am not the only one that has been treated horribly by many in the medical community. This book not only addresses all the physical components of these disorders but the social and emotional aspects.I love the chapter for single women especially as that is what I must deal with.In this sex obsessed society it is very hard not to be jaded and cynical regarding relationships with the opposite sex when you are afflicted with pain at the heart of the matter.Ms. Billheimer and Dr. Echenberg have done such a great service to all of us out here that are suffering in silence with sexuual pain disorders!

5-0 out of 5 stars Secret Suffering How Women's Sexual and Pelvic Pain Affects Their Relationships
As I began reading Secret Suffering I found myself able to identify with each and every topic.I have been a patient for almost 28 years which I feel qualifies me to say that this book is right on target when it comes to the emotional and physical aspects of chronic pelvic pain. I admit I cried through some of the chapters but, at the same time I felt as if it was speaking to me personally saying "You're not alone" and "You have the right to be heard"! I also loved that the authors explain the differences between male and female's way of problem solving and difference between the way we think. It told me to stop assuming and to start asking my partner how he feels.A huge burden was lifted and I learn the true meaning of intimacy. Secret suffering gives the reader a look into the reality of pelvic pain which can be a bit heart wrenching but at the same time very educational. If you're living in denial, if you're feeling guilty about not being able to have spontaneous sex with your partner, if you feel your family doesn't believe you or doctor is far from compassionate I recommend that you read this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Think Twice Before Reading this Book
You may notice that most of my comments here are the same as those I wrote in response to Arielle's review...I wanted to be sure to have my own rating acknowledged as well...

While I commend this book on its short chapter on single women, the general conclusion is that many of the single women have decided not to date. I've read numerous other books that have brought this issue to light, but have also given me at least some glimmer of hope, whereas this book left me feeling like I'd be alone forever. I suggest "The Vulvodynia Survival Guide" by Howard Glazer and Gay Rodke, which includes personal accounts of women who have found understanding partners. "Secret Suffering" upset me so much that I showed it to my sex therapist, a woman prominent in her field, who said that she would not recommend this book to her single clients. She said that the lack of compassion on the part of the male partners is especially disturbing and is not representative of all of the partners of her other pelvic pain clients. In fact, although the actual pain is obviously being experienced by the woman, she encourages couples to think of the pain as a problem they share, not just a female problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I found this book very depressing. The men in the book showed very little compassion for the women suffering from these disorders. I feel like we live in a misogynistic culture where women are expected to please men, and it's okay in our culture if that means women must suffer excruciating pain.

It is a sad commentary on a lack of empathy in men as a whole. I think there are men who would read this book and be ashamed of the behavior of the males in this book. I certainly hope so anyway.

I cannot understand why this book has gotten so many great reviews.

Yes women feel guilty, but they shouldn't feel this way for something that is not their fault. And that guilt should not lead them to feel pressure to engage in sexual activities that are extremely painful.

It's great that this book has brought this subject "out of the closet".

Now it's time to rethink the stigma that is placed on women with legitimate medical sexual pain. It's time for these disorders to receive the publicity they deserve, so that the general public can understand that not only are these disorders physical conditions, but they affect a substantial part of the female population (18 percent of women are diagnosed with vulvodynia- a condition which makes sex impossible in many cases).

A better book is "Let me Count the Ways" by Marty Klein- a book that discusses alternatives to penetrative sex, so that women and/or men who suffer from pelvic dysfunction do not have to feel guilty or pressured to engage in sexual activities that are impossible, uncomfortable, or extremely painful.

WARNING: If you are single and suffering from pelvic dysfunction, this book will only make you despair and feel more alone.

It is not a comforting book at all.

I read this book and felt horrible afterwards...

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally someone understands.
I have suffered from chronic pelvic pain for almost 30 years.Even though my family is aware of my health problems, until I read this book, "Secret Suffering", by Dr. Echenberg & Susan Bilheimer, I felt like I was going through this all alone. This book encompasses underlying causes for pain, & treatments that are available, but most important to my healing experience- it gave me faith that there are doctors out there who do believe & want to help us,... & the overwhelming feeling of relief that can only come from sharing experiences of those who suffer like me.If you or someone you know has this type of medical problem, educate yourself, seek treatment, don't give up- & READ THIS BOOK.It MIGHT NOT make the pain go away.... but it WILL make you feel better :-) ... Product Description

Approximately thirty million American men suffer from impotence, and another five million are infertile. Sooner or later all men have symptoms from enlarged prostate glands and over three hundred thousand will be diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Here in one volume, written by a leading expert in the field, are the essential facts and reliable advice to help a man understand, cope with, and resolve these issues and many others. Critically examining the recent scientific studies and advances, this wise and compassionate book includes information on: Alternative medicine for men The benefits, risks, and politics of Viagra, penile injections, and penile implants How nerve impulses, blood flow, hormones, and emotional factors can promote or inhibit normal male sexual response The prescription medications, chemicals, and surgery that can affect potency, ejaculation, and fertility
Amazon.com Review
Ever since God got angry with David and took away his potency, male sexual function has been more clouded in mystery and myth than inscience. But science has done an admirable job catching up, startingwith the clever Belgian cleric who observed barnyard chickens in themid-19th century and determined that the rooster's testicles were thekey to his relentless sexual drive. We now know that about 30 millionAmerican men suffer erectile dysfunction; that about 40,000 men a yeardie of prostate cancer; and that men have three kinds of erections(sexual, frictional, and nocturnal).

But there's still a biggerstory to tell, and Dr. Richard Spark, a noted endocrinologist, leadsus down many paths. We learn about the effects of drugs and alcohol onsexual function, and the role of hormones in male sexual health (andwhat happens when those hormones are given a boost, usually in theform of an injectable substance purchased in a locker room from a guywith 20-inch biceps).

Dr. Spark does an admirable job of lassoingall this information into a very useful guide, keeping it all inlayman's terms, and organizing it in such a way that the informationyou need is easy to find and easy to understand once you find it. Sizemay not matter in sexual intercourse, but in the case of SexualHealth for Men, the magnitude of the volume definitely translatesinto value. --Lou Schuler ... Read more

A straightforward book that explains a complex problem, don't be fooled by the simple title this book ha a lot of information that i bet you did not know. However, this book is not designed at resolving the problems that men have but is rather informative and blank. For a book that explains AND treats sexual disorders read

Product Description
ARTHUR L. BRUSH'S PSYCHOLOGY OF SEXUALITY is a collection of essays that contains information on the early causes of homosexuality and psychosexual disorders. The two basic mental processes that cause these disorders are explained. This information can be most valuable for new parents who only need to understand these problems to help their children avoid them.Viewing this information from the perspective of the psychiatrist or psychologist illustrates many important family values. Of course, these specific family values concern how we take care of our children. Also, adult gays and lesbians who read Parts I and II should readily understand the applicable situations or conditions that, in their cases, caused their homosexuality. Arthur Brush states, "Homosexuality is programmed with the exact same mental processes that are used to program heterosexuality." That is important, but understanding Arthur Brush's attitude toward the sociological problems of homosexuality can be the greatest value for helping gays and lesbians compete in a heterosexual world.PSYCHOLOGY OF SEXUALITY bridges the gulf between America's religions and the gay community. This is in reference to the 20th-century religious fundamentalists who blamed the homosexual rather than the conditions or situations that caused the homosexuality. Christians, Jews, and Muslims may wish to reexamine their thinking about the sociological implications of gay and lesbian behavior.PSYCHOLOGY OF SEXUALITY will help the counselor determine the origin of obligatory homosexuality, situational homosexuality, a variety of sexual disorders (paraphilias), bonding abnormalities, childhood gender identity disorder, fear of scrutiny phobias, Intelligence Quotients, and much more.Because homosexuality and the paraphilias are presented as problems developed in childhood and adolescence that can be avoided, this material may be difficult for gays and lesbians who live the gay lifestyle. However, everyone concerned must do their part to help new parents prevent these problems in their children. This is not a book adolescents should read, but it is our overriding intention that every young person with problems of sexual orientation will have the opportunity to grow up with the factual knowledge necessary to understand and cope with his or her sexuality constructively and intelligently. ...
