4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the tunes and style of Irish fiddling
Author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing the Fiddle (Complete Idiot's Guide to)

This is the very first book of Irish tunes I purchased when I began playing Irish fiddle back in high school, and I found it very useful. A short primer at the beginning gives you the basic gist of how an Irish fiddler might ornament his/her tunes. In the collection itself, ornaments such as rolls, triplets and grace notes are written directly into the melodies. This allows you to get a sense of where these ornaments might go. While it doesn't contain all the tunes from the original O'Neill collections, the most commonly known tunes are here. So once you've (hopefully) moved on to learning all your tunes by ear, you'll still have a good reference volume on your shelf when you just can't for the life of you remember how "The Woman of the House" starts....

5-0 out of 5 stars Concertina player
This is a fantastic resource. Many of the best arrangements are in this version. I have 4 versions of O'Neill's: Krassen, Walton's, Ryan's, and Jim O'Neill's. I use them all, but especially Krassen and Waltons. Do not believe the discouraging remarks. This is one of the best. Get them all and compare the tunes. Each has strengths and weaknesses. Taken together they give you the best of all worlds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated, overly-simplified settings of tunes.
The problem isn't only that a lot of tunes have been left out that were in the original edition offered by Daniel Collins. But Krassen has altered many tunes so that instead of presenting piping versions -- which the original offered -- we now have simplified fiddle-friendly versions. Many pipe ornaments have been lost. Krassen has lost much of the magic.
O'Neill was a piper and many of the versions of tunes he saved came from pipers. This is also true of the earlier collections of tunes from which O'Neill drew for many of his tunes, such as Ryan's Mammoth Collection. In Krassen's version a lot of the classical, 19th. Century pipery flavor has been sacrificed for "cleaner,"presumably "modern" versions. This is the last edition of O'Neill's one should consider buying. I play fiddle, flute, and concertina, I've lived in Ireland for years, and have been playing Irish traditional music for over thirty years. I know this sounds terribly opinionated. But even if you play fiddle and learn from the dots you should use a tune-book closer to the source than this. Get the big yellow Collin's edition or the slim white-covered "condensed" O'Neill's collection. You'll be happier in the long run.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be the basis of any library of Irish tunes.
O'Neills contains hundreds of well known and not so well known tunes collected around the turn of the 20th century. This is an excellant source book to find traditional settings for tunes.Though this revision is geared towards the fiddle player, any musician will find this a wonderful reference. There is a previous version of O'Neills that contains some tunes that were lost in the revision by Mr. Krassen. Some people prefer this earlier edition. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book if you never played piano before
I have played Bass guitar for many years but also wanted to learn to play keyboards.I purchased a electronic keyboard and found this great book. This book really breaks it down so you can understand the concept.I am only on chapter 3 and I am already playing basic songs with left and right hands.I purchased this book because of the feedback from other owners of it.For the price you cant go wrong it is very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rewarding
At age 57 I started to teach myself to play the piano, something I had wanted to do for 30 years, using only this book. Now 3 years later I play daily and the joy and plain mental exercise I get from the activity is rewarding beyond measure. I pretty much stopped at lesson 8 and taught myself to modify what I had learned, using songbooks that have melody line and chords (check out "Real Book Standards"). I don't think this book will work for people who had early training in the traditional methods of playing piano. They can't seem to unglue their minds from the hand-eye relationship. I plan on getting back to lesson 9 & 10 to try and master playing by ear. I'm confident it will happen. To some degree, this book was life changing for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I am so glad I purchased this book. I'm not even through halfway yet and I'm actually playing real songs, and with both hands, things I never thought I could do.This book is clear, to the point, and very easy to understand. But of course, the book will not do the learning for you.You need to reread and practice a lot to actually get good. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to play popular piano.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow... get it.
I have to say, I was really struggling to find a good book to learn the piano. After searching all through amazon, I found this book.I am only on chapter four and I can name all the keys on the piano, name and read all the notes on the staff, and I can play with two hands!!?!
for beginners...?Get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great piano starter book.
I just started trying to teach myself piano a few months ago using a few books and stuff off the web.I knew nothing about piano or notes. This book gives a lot of tips for someone just starting out and it is interesting and easy to read.I read it once, and now I am going through it again.I am really glad I bought this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice collection of songs- easy to play
This is a great collection to add to my library as a voice teacher. They are easy to play which is great for me because I am usually site reading as I teach and I want to be concentrating on the voices of my students rather than the difficulty of a piano score. Voice Lessons To Go v.1-4 The Complete Set

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok for VERY early beginners...
I purchased this and volume II to play and sing with friends when we get together. The arrangements are painfully easy (as in the treble is the melody exclusively); I would not buy this unless you are quite new to piano or like to improvise. Most of the songs are so watered down that they are no longer very fun to play or sing. Also, the binding is TERRIBLE.You have to practically break the book in half to get it to stay open, even my music clip wasn't helping very much. The plus side is you can sightread all of these songs perfectly, so you don't need to worry about running through them ahead of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs, Easy playing, Love it!
I love this book. It is great practice for a beginner to intermediate piano/keyboard player.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Good Arrangements
This is a good book for early intermediate/late elementary players. All of the songs arranged so that they aren't hard but still good.I play piano, although I bought this for my twelve year old grandson. I've tried a couple and they're very fun! If this you're range and you would like to play some good, popular songs, I'd buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rolling Stones songbook
I always count on Amazon to provide a great selection at a great price. Thanks again for a great book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Springsteen Tabber (what were you thinking)
My first thought when i saw the tablature icon down the bottom left of the book was a feeling a happyness from a search. However to my amazement, this $50 investment was the biggest waste of money, some of the flaws include wrong notes, Some of the songs dont even have tablature, just stupid acoustic chords with 1 strum pattern, im not joking, For those who are interested in buying some of my rising work that i myself have completed,Please email me,It will cost money. This book is only worth the lyrics. ... Read more
