This book is exactly what it says it is
This book is exactly what it says it is - a pictorial history. It consists of pictures, drawings, accompanying comments and really not much more. After about 2-3 pages of introductory text it goes right into showing you the photos you will not find anywhere, but in this book or russian navy archives. There are photos of every type of submarine in the tsarist army shown, in fact I think there is one photo for every submarine built for the tsarist navy. In addition for every type of a submarine, a submarine's drawing showing its layout is included. Every type of a submarine is briefly described including technical specs, submarines built and their end. Overall it's a must have for people interested in submarine history as well as Russian navy of that period. I would recommend buying another book along with this, which will tell you in detail about operations and detailed history of the submarines pictured. I am planning to get "Submarines of the Russian and Soviet Navies, 1718-1990", which looks very promising in that respect. Enjoy your book! ... Read more

An excellent photographic record.
Covering almost every year of the 20th Century, this book explains through it's many photographs the numerous developments of the British Submarine and life in the Royal Navy's Submarine Service. Written by a former commander of two of HM submarines and assisted by one of the staff in charge of the photograph collection at the Imperial War Museum, they have successfully combined to provide an excellent photographic record of all aspects the Royal Navy's Submarine Service.

From the earliest submarines, including the introduction of the first Conning Tower, through two world wars and right up to the latest Nuclear Powered leviathans, we have page after page of first rate photographs added to which are full explanatory captions.

Once you start reading this book it really is hard to put down.

It dispells any myths and stories about u-boats, and tells the full story of consturtion and building problems more so in WWII.

The U-Boat : The Evolution and Technical History of German S
I purchased the book "The U-Boat: The Evolution and Technical History of German Submarines" used [...]several months ago. The book was translated and published by the Naval Institute Press in 1981 (Hard Cover, 384 pages). The Original book by Eberhard Rossler has been published several times in Germany. The last publication was in 1996 by Bernhard & Graefe Verlang and the title is "Geschichte Des Deutchen Ubootbaus," Band 1 (Volume 1) and Band 2 (Volume 2) Hard Cover, 550 total pages, plus an additional 19 folded blue print sheets in the back of the books.

This Naval Institute Press book is difficult to read because of the size of the print type. This was done because of the volumes of information contained within the constraints of a single volume format. Throughout the book, the quality of the photographs don't meet the standards of books printed in modern print shops today. However, I believe Eberhard Rossler is the definitive expert when it comes to the German U-boat. This book covers the U-boat origins, W.W.I and W.W.II developments (and much more), and some information on NATO U-boats up until the mid 70's (1974). It wound be a fantastic book on U-boats, if a modern publisher would use the contents of the original German books and include all the separate blue prints.

I purchased my copy of the Naval Institute Press book in near mint condition for my personal library. In my opinion, this was a good investment.

Update:

The Cassell & Co re-printed edition 2002 is exactly the same as the Naval Press edition printed in 1989 (format and size).The new dust cover is excellent and the print is much sharper and darker.This book is an excellent buy for the U-Boat enthusiast.

Printer's Error:

The U-Boat drawing on page 118 is labeled as a "Type VII C".This is not correct!In fact, this error was also in the Naval Press edition printed in 1989.The German text edition printed in 1996 identifies it correctly as a "Type IX C" on page 169.The Type VII C never had two stern torpedo tubes side-by-site.

At the onset of the American Revolution, the British expected to quell the rebellion quickly with a show of overwhelming force. In an experiment in asymmetric warfare, David Bushnell created the first submarine vessel designed specifically "for the destruction of vessels of war." On a quiet September night in 1776, sergeant Ezra Lee maneuvered Bushnell's strange little craft out from Manhattan and into the midst of the greatest naval fleet ever assembled in the Americas. Lee's goal was to sink the British flagship HMS Eagle by attaching a powerful explosive to its hull. Although the mission was unsuccessful, Bushnell's concept of submarine warfare was considered by George Washington to have been "an effort of genius."

David Bushnell was raised in the town of Saybrook at the mouth of the Connecticut River. More than two centuries later, another Turtle would be launched into the same river within sight of Bushnell's first forays with his vessel during the summer of 1775. Under the direction of Frederic J. Frese, students at Old Saybrook High School created a full-size, working replica of Bushnell's submarine, facilitated through an education partnership with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island, where Roy R. An Appreciation of an Inspired Invention
We are used to reading or seeing movies about submarine warfare in the twentieth century, but some subs were used in the Civil War, and there was one that even fought in the American Revolution.Its story is told in _Turtle: David Bushnell's Revolutionary Vessel_ (Westholme) by Roy R. Manstan and Frederic J. Frese.The authors, with backgrounds in teaching, diving, and engineering, have done more than look at the historical records to tell the story of the _Turtle_.They have built the submarine itself.This enhances our understanding of just what a remarkable ship it was.There are no contemporary drawings or blueprints of the craft, just written descriptions in letters from its inventor and from others to describe it.Taking all of those into account, the authors oversaw an afterschool project of building the ship at the high school where Frese teaches in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, which is Bushnell's home town. The book not only tells of Bushnell and his attempts to blow up British men-of-war, but also of the process of making the reproduction and putting it to sea.The authors faced many of the same engineering and construction problems Bushnell must have overcome, and their successful replica must increase our admiration for Bushnell's cleverness in making the original, even though Bushnell could not claim that his efforts brought any military success.

Bushnell was born in 1740, and got to Yale in the years just before the Revolution.He took advantage of Yale's extensive scientific library, the sorts of books from that time that the authors have referred to in building their replica.It is not clear how Bushnell came to his inspiration, but he imagined that a small, sealed craft could carry explosives secretly underneath a moored enemy vessel, screw in a fastener that would hold a timed explosive charge, and then leave the area undetected.The _Turtle_ worked.Bushnell had cleverly solved the problems of navigation and respiration, and his two screw propellers (turned directly by the pilot) solved the problem of propulsion, and were the first such propellers used in a ship.The problem seems to have been that the _Turtle_ could not be easily maneuvered to get under a relatively horizontal part ofthe target ship so that it could press upwards to screw into the hull an attachment that would hold an explosive mine.To make a replica was to attempt to solve the problems Bushnell himself was up against.Although there are no contemporary diagrams to go by, during the centuries artists had tried to draw what Bushnell had come up with.This led to some peculiar results, partially because of terminology.A drawing from 1906 shows that the craft had oars, with the paddles extending out from the egg-shaped vessel and the handles inside.Bushnell himself referred to the propulsion screws as "oars," and Ezra Lee wrote that during one nighttime effort he "hove about and rowed" for a couple of hours.The propulsion system did not depend upon rowing with paddles, however.Artists have also been confused by the "screws" that were used for propulsion, showing some sort of Archimedean helical screws instead of relatively modern screw-type propellers.That _Turtle_ had angled blades for propellers comes from a description by Lee who wrote that the "oars" were "shaped like the arms of a windmill."The authors tried different shapes and angles of blade on their replica.Since the _Turtle_ had to do its work at night, and submerged, it needed an interior source of light, but a candle would not do; it sucked away the oxygen that the operator himself needed.Bushnell solved the problem by using foxfire, decaying wood mixed with fungus, to light the compass and the depth gauge.The detailed reports of the sea tests of the modern _Turtle_ are here; yes, it had a compass, but this one also had GPS just in case, and it also had a scuba tank for the operator to use in an emergency, just in case.The operators were Navy-trained divers who didn't really have to rely on any of the precautions of modern equipment; the replica worked just as the original must have.

Bushnell himself didn't call the craft the _Turtle_; no one at the time of its action did.He did, however, describe it as looking like "two upper Tortoise shells joined together."It was perhaps this that led a friend of Bushnell's to call it the _Turtle_ in a book ten years after the craft had been used.Bushnell referred instead to his "sub-marine vessel."That we now more simply call his type of craft "submarines" (or even further abbreviating, "subs") shows how commonplace and accepted have become these tools of warfare.There was a first one, though, and the authors have told an exciting historical story while at the same time listing one innovation after another that Bushnell employed for the first time in an entirely new type of weapon.It may have been a tactical failure, but it is easy to see from the authors' enthusiasm in the replica project and in their book that the _Turtle_ succeeds in inspiring wonder about a little-known inventor's cleverness in the service of liberty.Readers will feel at least a bit of that inspiration.

A tale of two Turtles
Roy Manstan and Frederic Frese's "Turtle: David Bushnell's Revolutionary Vessel" is a dual story.First, it is a detailed history of the development and employment of the first vessel ever built as a military submarine to attack enemy shipping.Although the American Revolution's Turtle ultimately failed to sink a single British ship, the curious craft itself was a substantial success, a practical submersible vessel that indeed carried out underwater attacks.The authors to a considerable extent function as tehnological detectives, seeking to understand how the Turtle was designed and constructed, within limits imposed by the contemporary state of the art.Intertwined with the historical story is a technical study of a modern relica of the Turtle, built largely by high school students under the authors' direction and tested to rigorouos standards.At times, the technical aspects of reporting the Turtle's performance perhaps impedes the overall flow of the book, although the authors' experiences are not told without a little leavening humor.Of particular value are several first-hand primary accounts reproduced as appendices. ...
