Elliot Moose is a winner!
My 2 year old son loves all the Elliot Moose and friend's stories (since we started reading them to him when he was a few months old). He loves to have us read them to him over and over. Recently, he started "reading" them to us! Elliot is such a loving character, that has fun adventures with his friends. These books also have wonderful illustrations we use to teach our son, and have him point out things he knows and learn new words.

Pitiful as well as horrible shipwrecks and rescues
While there have been literaly thousands of shipwrecks along the Pacific coast from mid-California to British Columbia, author selected unique wrecks and rescue operations most of which are not found in other books. The first 15 chapters detail all of the ships along the coast that were attacked, some sunk, by Japanese submarines shortly after the start of World War II--the "Pacific War" as the Japanese call it.

Many readers will find it amazing to learn that folks could stand along the beach and watch American ships sink, because of Japanese submarines, before their eyes.

A real surprize chapter is the detailed American sinking of a Japanese submarine (the I-12) in 1944 between the west coast and Hawaii, the sub having been spotted by an American civilian passenger airplane. The all Coast Guard crew on an American Naval frigate (USS ROCKFORD) sank the sub!

Book includes some specuacular U.S.Coast Guard rescues (with pictures).

Book's most unusual chapter is about the 1916 loss of an early American submarine on the beach north of Eureka, Califronia, then the destruction in early 1917 of the 10,000 ton USS MILWAUKIE cruiser that tried to haul the sub off the beach and got stuck herself.

In all there are 86 amazing true tales of shipwrecks and rescues in this book.There is adventure and action on every page of this book. Highly recommended

Great book for the coffee table...
In my opinion, this book is wonderful for leaving on your coffee table for people to browse through.It not only looks very nice but it's useful to spark a conversation about diving and also has decent content and history about some wrecks.Personally, I bought the book as sort of a reference for scuba diving and I found that "Divers guide to Michigan" was more of what I was looking for.However, like I said, this is a great book and I am really happy with it for what it is!

Decent book for the casual enthusiast but poorly researched
Paul Hancock's entry into the Great Lakes shipwreck genre is a very nicely produced book with many dramatic photos and a high level overview of a small sampling of accidents.The book is a good coffee table style book for the casually interested, but will disappoint those already acquainted with the genre or those looking for a more comprehensive and accurate reference.Despite the lavish production, the book is poorly researched, relying solely upon the secondary resources of a single archive.Subsequent errors in photo identification and historical fact abound, such as the misidentification of the schooner Northwest and the outright fabrication of the loss of the sidewheeler Planet, while details concerning the losses of several others vessels are grossly inaccurate.The book contributes no new information to the historical record and is simply an unchecked rehash of the (sometimes erroneous) work of previous researchers.The book is solely for the entertainment of the casual enthusiast and is a blatantly commercial effort bearing a striking similarity to the now out of print book Wrecks and Rescues of the Great Lakes by James Barry.Of the small sampling of Great Lakes wrecks considered, nearly all have already been written about extensively by previous authors, usually with greater historical accuracy.If you are seriously interested in the history of Great Lakes shipwrecks, this is a good book to skip. Wonderful Read and Very Informative
This book is a wonderful read for not just shipwreck lovers, but also California history buffs. The shipwrecks that took place between 1853 and 1953, along the California Central coast, are brought to life through the author's detailed descriptions of the shipwrecks. The reader will also find historical photographs throughout the book, all of which are quite interesting.

Scarey Waters
I thoroughly enjoyed what became a compelling read, the only thing missing was the haunting call of a mermaid calling the seamen to a watery grave, but then the sailors did a good job of wrecking themselves without their help.

The book reminds sailors and land lubbers alike that the sea is a force never to be underestimated. The vessels that sunk had in most cases competent skippers and crew who had an intimate knowledge of the local waters but nevertheless were still unable to save their vessels and sadly some members of their crew.

I was fascinated and full of admiration for the stricken mariners who in the face of the most hostile conditions still managed to save not only themselves and fellow crew members, but made possible the recovery of not only the cargo but in some cases even the refloating and decommissioning of the unfortunate ship.

JoAnn Semones has done a great job in presenting a factual account leading to a fascinating and informative read - well researched and beautifully presented. Tell me there is another book in the offing.

Journey through maritime history
With the account of each shipwreck, the author has perfectly captured the details that make history come to life. Not only on board ship, but inside the majestic lighthouses of California, of which Pigeon Point is one of the richest in lore. The scalawags and scavengers of the title add their own color and drama, especially to "Decks Awash," the chapter on rum running. This book is a perfect catch for lovers of history and all things having to do with the ocean and coast.

This book is a gem!
Shipwrecks, Scalawags and Scavengers, The Storied Waters of Pigeon Point is a trove of historic record from 1853 to 1953 involving shipwrecks along jagged rocks off the California coast between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. From clipper ships that include the history of Pigeon Point Lighthouse, to the U.S. Army's BARC 1, a large amphibious barge used during the Vietnam War, the individual stories link various types of vessels to developments in maritime commerce and history. With well researched descriptions, photos and quotes, each story stands alone as a tragedy of human interest, comprised of times past and nautical vocabulary that I found informative, educational and a delight to read. As suggested by the title and series name, this volume covers the most well-known wrecks sunk off the geographical coast of New York: the south shore of Long Island and the Long Island Sound (but not Lakes Erie and Ontario).

For each of the wrecks covered, a statistical sidebar provides basic information such as the dates of construction and loss, previous names (if any), tonnage and dimensions, builder and owner (at time of loss), port of registry, type of vessel and how propelled, cause of sinking, location (loran coordinates if known), and depth. In most cases, an historical photograph or illustration of the ship leads the text. Throughout the book is scattered a selection of color underwater photographs, some of the wrecks, more often of typical marine life found in the area.

Each volume is full of fascinating narratives of triumph and tragedy, of heroism and disgrace, of human nature at its best and its basest. These books are not about wood and steel, but about flesh and blood, for every shipwreck saga is a human story. Ships may founder, run aground, burn, collide with other vessels, or be torpedoed by a German U-boat. Well Researched History of the Shipwrecks of Long Island, NY
We all benefit from Gary Gentile's well researched book on our local wrecks. When you dive a wreck you should know what the ship was all about and how it sank. This helps brings the ship alive once more even while she rests in her grave on the ocean bottom.

A good giude for New York diving.
Gentile is an accomplished diver and this book gives an excelent historical account of the sinking of the most famous N.Y. wrecks. Gentile also leads off each wreck story with a basic data list including Loran coordinates for each wreck.Each story ends with a discription of the diveor rather the condition of the wreck when the book went to print.This isthe only area where Gentile could have given a bit more detail, but all inall, a good book. ... Her first book is a hit with me.
In spite of the in-depth research, the mountains of data, the skillful interpretations, and the masterful turn-of-words of all that information, the most surprising thing about this book, to me, is that it made me "feel" to the point that I cried, a lot. This is a book with a metaphysical quality...similar to turning water into wine. In this case, however, a rock is turned into a sponge.

The fact that I have none of the Titanic degrees in my own chart, 19-25 degrees of the cardinal signs, probably offers a clue to my surprise. Although I have enjoyed a couple of the Titanic movies, I have never been particularly drawn to the ship, its history, its people, or their fate. Admittedly, I purchased and read this book only because its author, Eileen Grimes, has been a good online friend of mine for the last seven years or so. I got far more than I expected! She has made me feel proud, once again, that I became an astrologer so many years ago.

In a very intriguing way, Eileen has perhaps given us "The Keys To the Kingdom" where investigative astrology is concerned. She has opened the doors to new and exciting methods of stretching the scope of astrology. As much as I became emotionally 'caught up' in the story as she has told it, I am just as intellectually excited about the doors she has opened for us astrologers. In my opinion, no self-respecting astrologer should miss reading this book.

For non-astrologers, I can only suggest that, in this book, you may finally discover the connection we all have with the Heavens above us.

Eileen has proved, not only the astrological connections between Heaven and happenings on Earth; she has transformed a terrible disaster into a victory that will be with us when the Titanic itself is nothing but dust.

Thank you for such a wonderful book, Eileen. I am extremely proud of you and your talents which you have so masterfully shared with us.

Everyone makes a mistake.
This book was a dazzling disappointment.It is poorly written and contains numerous errors, including some dates listed that are simply wrong. The organization of the chapters is poor, jumping from poorly covered topic to poorly covered topic. The style of the book is that of a 4th grade textbook. This book is really not worth the paper on which it is printed!

Great history of Door County ship wrecks!
I thoroughly enjoyed this very complete history of the ship wrecks of Door County and it's Death's Door passage. The author has detailed all of the interesting history of each ship, it's captain, how it met it's demize and how it was discovered. Especially interesting is the tragic fate of the Alvin Clark that was found intact, raised and left to rot away. The Stone Quarry Fleet is also documented with many old photos, as wel as current day's underwater photography! Jon Paul Van Harpen is an interesting fellow, diver, explorer and historian.
