Product Description
If there was an honour roll of bibliographies of the Malayan campaign and the Japanese occupation of Malaya, Singapore and Borneo, this work would come close to the top of the list. With over 4,000 entries, it is a formidable collection and there is no doubt that Justin Corfield's efforts will be valuable to scholars working on this important aspect of military as well as Malayan and Singapore history. Corfield has compiled a virtual treasure trove of hitherto seemingly untouched material in the form of original diaries and other unpublished personal accounts, including material not only in English and Dutch, but also in Malay and Chinese. Three indices greatly facilitate the looking up of entries. ... Read more

Product Description
The essays in this volume are the result of an exhibition on legal history staged by the Singapore Academy of Law in 1995. After that exhibition, a Legal History Sub-Committee was established within the Academy to look into ways of promoting the general awareness of the roots of legal practice in Singapore. It was decided that an illustrated collection of essays on selected legal history subjects might provide the right launchpad. This book aims not only to bring the fascinating world of legal history to a much wider audience, but also to act as a springboard for future study and research. If anything, it represents the beginning of a quest to making legal history a living subject. ... Read more

by Jurgen Rudolph
 Hardcover: 507 Pages (1998-01)

Isbn: 1840143576

Editorial Review

Product Description
The aim of this text is to provide a social history of the Babas in Singapore. It describes and analyzes social, political and cultural aspects of their identities by taking into account the conceptual history of Baba designations from 1819-1994. It argues that "defining" the Babas is misleading, it is more meaningful to adopt a socio-historical approach that differentiates spaciotemporally-distinct Baba identities. Such an approach is usually avoided not only in research on the Babas, but in many other sociological, anthropological or historical studies. It concludes that there is no such thing as a "Baba identity", it has always been in flux and needs to be reconstructed taking seriously the conceptual history. The two crucial turning-points in the history of the Babas, namely the Japanese occupation (1942-1945) and self-rule (1959) led to public emphasis on their culture. Prior emphasis on their former status as a political and economic elite have been hitherto neglected. Taking into account all aspects (legal, political, economic, cultural, linguistic, religious) of Baba identities leads us to a fascinating trajectory of a potential group. ... Read more

Product Description
Between 1880 and 1930 colonial Singapore attracted tens of thousands of Chinese immigrant laborers, brought to serve its rapidly growing economy. This book chronicles the vast movement of coolies between China and the Nanyang, and their efforts to survive in colonial Singapore. Focusing in on one particular occupation, of rickshaw coolie, this study unveils the devastating poverty of the Chinese sojourner in the colonial city, the disjunctions between colonial order and the reality of life on the streets.

Drawing on a broad range of sources, including Coroner's records overlooked for many years, and making use of the technique of collective biography, this book brings to life the texture of experience, the ironies and despair of the laborers of urban Singapore.

In the years since its original publication in 1986, Rickshaw Coolie has become an inspiration to those seeking to come to grips with Singapore's past. ... Read more
