2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't what I expected
Being divorced I was expecting a book that would help me adjust back into the dating world. Instead it was a make peace with your lot in life book. I had already achieved that on my own and hadn't quite gotten past that so I was disappointed with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I have searched for help to deal with the emotions from a divorce - from an LDS standpoint. I haven't found much at all in the bookstores or online. I checked this book out from the library, and it has been so helpful to me! I need to own this book - and want to read it again and highlight the parts I want to remember. I am also buying a book for a friend of mine who is going through a divorce.

Teena has put into words feelings that I am experiencing right now.She has given me a lot of food for thought, as an LDS woman experiencing the emotions that follow a divorce. I have also lost a husband to death, and this book will help those dealing with a similar loss.

I recommend this book to anyone who is trying to cope with the feelings that come with death or divorce - LDS, or non-LDS. This book isn't about religion, it is about learning to heal and move on after a loss. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A super single parenting resource
Shae Cooke's The Single Parent's Guide To RAISING Godly Children I highly recommend to parents of children and teens, whether single or not! It is how to spell R-E-L-I-E-F; rich in both practical and spiritual advice, encouragement, and helps for both single mom or dad and child, with a refreshing transparency and straight talk; the author herself currently raising a teenage son and writing from a perspective of imperfection but perfection in love and asking all of us at the end of even the most harrowing day to ask of ourselves, "Did we parent perfectly in love?" She also gleans wisdom from other single parents, and from her own childhood pov, herself raised in a broken home, but also experiencing the love of dual parents in a foster home.
I wish I had this guide while I was going it solo and raising my teens especially, because it is both proactive in helping to prevent the pull of the world on our children's unique vulnerabilities, and active, giving us a heads up concerning what our children might be into, or lured into, and why and what to do about it now. My copy I'll be lending out to my many single parent friends, for sure.
Chapter 5 is a gem: "How To Open Soft Shell Clams (Even If Grounded For Life)", from Part II, ACTIVATING YOUR PRESENCE, and covers how to open or reopen and keep communication doors open with your child or teen, how that even discipline can improve communication, with an amazing formula for discipline.
Particularly helpful was PART IV, DEFYING THE ODDS GOD'S WAY, and chapters 8, 9, and 10, and declares open season on the enemy, dealing with prayer and protection, healing and deliverance, self-control and awareness. In these chapters also, parents learn how to identify enemy tactics, what to do if your child slips, how to increase the likelihood of no, immunize your kids against drugs, alcohol, internet addictions, sexual temptation, tattoos and body mods, and other temptations and pulls, creating a victory plan, and dealing with the tough stuff, plus a great prayer to pray over your children.
Most of all, this book teaches us how to lead our children and teens to Christ, and keep them walking with Him, even when we are not around as much as we'd like to be, the Resurrection Power (powerful stuff in Part 1!) of Christ in their lives giving them much needed HOPE to COPE and THRIVE in this world.
The only downside, would be the way the lists are formatted on the pages, the way they run onto the next pages; would love to see perhaps some of the lists in the back of the book for tearing out and putting on the fridge or in a Bible or diary for easy reference.
Whether single through divorce, separation, death, alienation, distance, or spiritually single, this guide you'll refer to time and again, and I would recommend it to every parent who cares about their child or teen's present and eternal welfare and well-being. Dynamically written, an insightful, encouraging, and helpful read, without overburdening the already burnt out single parent. Can hardly wait for the second guide which I see is due out on Amazon in February 2011, for single parents on love, dating, and relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional!
A four-part book comprising ten chapters, The Single Parent Guide to Raising Godly Children ("raising" the operative word!") surprised me right from the beginning. It is as much for the single parent as it is for the single-parented child, sensitive to the challenges and fears of both. The book is as much about the spiritual side of things as it is about the daily tangible challenges, with the author, Shae Cooke, a single parent and in the "battle zone" herself raising her teen son, and drawing from the wisdom of other single parents, encouraging and providing great helps not only for the children, but also for parents with their own healing and coming to terms with injustices and unforgiveness citing that every minute of our wholeness and moving into the realm of God's desire for the family counts in the lives of our children, the quicker we get it together, the better.

The author is also very respectful of the single parent's busy schedule, stress levels, resource challenges, and tendency toward feeling guilty or overwhelmed, supplying "What you can do now" helps and listing many good resources.

She teaches moms and dads how to identify, navigate, and overcome children's vulnerabilities, such as low self-esteem and morale, peer and media pressure/influence, sadness, hurts, the tendency to grow up too quickly, feelings of guilt or shame, and the sometimes negative stigma of being raised in a single parented home or that of coming from a broken home. Chapter Ten, "Big Fire From Little Sparks" helps the parent identify the tough stuff kids today are into, and sheds light on internet dangers, video and computer gaming, body mods, tattoos, and more, giving moms raising boys, dads raising girls, parents of every description tools to help children navigate and resist negative influence.

From engaging in spiritual warfare to leading children and teens to Christ and keeping them walking with Him, to creating a Godly atmosphere in the home that sticks, to freeing children to be children, to resurrecting their hopes and dreams, to communicating love, to activating your presence, to raising a child's "value" quotient, to the KFC formula in discipline, to the Love Plan, The Single Parent's Guide packs that and more into 221 pages. I highly recommend it for both single and dual parent families.

4-0 out of 5 stars parent
Good book about how single parents can raise their children with the help of God.We need to love our children and let God lead us. It's not about being a perfect parent. No one has a perfect family. We need to embrace and treasure the love of God in our lives and give it to our children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Information and Spiritual Guidance
With the phrase "Godly children" in the title, you can be sure of a high spiritual content here. There is a strong focus on Christian values, Biblical character, and etc. in these pages --- which is a good thing.

Also helpful here are a variety of lists and bullet-point items which I would love to tear out and use as separate sheets. However they run across several pages --- so you would need to copy these out, and make a list of your own. The content is good; the effort is worth it if you want to use some of these lists.

A well-written book which helps guide in shaping your child's spiritual formation and core character. Helpful for any single parent who cares about the spiritual growth and Christian journey of her child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Single Parents: Teaching the Way of our Lord
Wow!This author has tackeled one of the common, but difficult problems of our day 'single parenting', and the book is just excellent. It is a four part guidebook beginning with 'Movinging Out of Dysfunctional Junction, to Activating Your Presence, to Nurturing for the Lazarous Factor, and then Defying the Odds God's Way.
This guidebook is easy to read with short segments to read for the 'busy' Mom or Dad, and it is filled with Bible references to 'back' all that is being written.
This could be considered a guidebook to heal the heart and soul of the single Mom or Dad, and the children.Chapter 9 is 'Open Your Eyes and Lead Them Not Into Temptation', and this chapter covers Alarming Stats and includes a discussion of monitoring the Internet.I could 'spill' the book for the reader if I discuss the Part III 'Lazarous Factor'.
This is a great book and is one that when placed on the shelf after reading will be pulled off for reference after reference, and for discussion with the children and your friends. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless and patronizing
Mostly fluff, sometimes worse.

The author totally lost me when she declared that you can allot ZERO percent of your budget for childcare (!!!!!!)Or that you can find livable housing for 25-35% of a single mom's salary!Since these 2 items combined with taxes often consume more than 100% of a single mom's income, the author seems to be completely out of touch with reality as well as her prospective audience.

If you really have never considered shopping at a thrift shop or yard sale, maybe this book will help you.If you regularly eat your meals at restaurants, this book can give you the badly needed advice to cook at home instead. Is there actually anybody out there who does not already know this???

If you are the kind who is going to suddenly save 1,000's per year by giving up that daily $3 latte and $5 daily lunches out, woo hoo.

Most of us reading this book would not dream of wasting our money this way and so do not "save" anything by following this author's "tips" because we never have the money to waste on such things in the first place.

What this book will do for you---try to give you a major guilt trip if you cannot afford to tithe (give 10% of your income to your church) and use your money to pay for basic food and shelter for your children instead.

I strongly recommend avoiding this book and getting a copy of the complete Tightwad Gazette instead. Miserly Moms is another helpful book although tends to focus mostly on cutting your grocery bill whereas Tightwad Gazette gives you lots of ideas on cutting expenses on everything.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but pretty much common sense
For me, this was mostly common sense. Though there is something I disagree with the author on.She suggested figuring out your gross wage for the year and then subtracting them -- then begin subtracting your yearly pymts for daycare, utility, etc... If you're a single parent, you're very aware of having take off for sick days, dr appts... it'd be wise to go month to month -- much easier to adjust with any emergencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Brenda!
As a single mom for ten years, I have searched for a tool that understands the financial burdens of single parenting. I finally found it! Brenda's ability to connect realistically to the demanding life of single parenting brings home solutions to a very practical level. This book is not only for single parents, but also for churches and any organization helping single parents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive divorce survival guide
This is an ambitious book. Author Genevieve Clapp, Ph.D., tackles the divorce process from the practical to the emotional. She guides you through the initial breakup, the intense emotional aftermath, the return to single life and the challenges facing stepfamilies. Dr. Clapp also gives solid, actionable advice about co-parenting and helping your children handle the rupture in their lives. Although the book is hampered by endless repetition, and the constant citation of studies and research, this same weakness enables you to use it as a reference. You can read only the chapters that pertain to your situation and still get all the necessary information. getAbstract recommends Clapp's all-inclusive guide to anyone contemplating a breakup, in the midst of a divorce, or newly single.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Those Going Through A Divorce
My Mom picked up this book for me at a yard sale when I was in the very early phases of my seperation & divorce and I can't tell you what a lifesaver it was for me!
It's a great all around resource that covers the many different aspects of divorce/divorce recover, and even some good basic advice on what to expect during the worst part of a divorce - the legal wrangeling phase. The book also has lots of good information on how to help your kids during through the challenging times of a divorce.
I have given copy after copy to people who are going through divorces and they have all found it useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers all bases
This book is a one-stop source for a very difficult reason to read a book...it's definately not to kill time. Since no one wants to read a book on how to divorce and start over...it's good that someone (Genevieve Clapp) took the time to make it organized and easy.Another good thing about this book is that it makes you evaluate or re-evaluate the decision to ever marry again. I think single women even considering marrying an 'at risk' guy should read it to see if it's worth the trouble. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Children Want Adults to Read
This outstanding book treats the challenge divorce presents to parents with respect, but not alarm. Dr. Pedro-Carroll does not spare the reader the harmful consequences a badly handled divorce can have for children. However, in every chapter, the author lays out clear and feasible options that all parents can draw on to help them and their children make it through divorce successfully.

This book speaks to a wide range of audiences -- parents, grandparents, mental health and legal professionals as well as folks like myself with friends and family members who face the challenge of divorce. Throughout the book, author's use of the research literature is clear and convincing. The case studies she uses are pointed, poignant and highly instructive.I feel like I "know" some of the people she describes; and I deeply appreciate the empathy and understanding the author brings to their situations.

Readers can open this book to any page or read it from front to back.In either case, you'll learn something important and useful about what it means and what it takes for parents and children to "make it" through this difficult transition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Perspective on Parenting
Here is a positive, practical approach to parenting based on more than aquarter century of research and practice with families.

In clear, concise language Dr. Pedro-Carroll addresses the series of inevitable challenges that occur when couples with children decide to divorce. With the same respect, truthfulness and caring that she encourages people to use with themselves and their children, Pedro-Carroll steadily guides parents through the emotional, practical and legal processes they confront while continuing to parent.

An extremely helpful "how-to" book, which focuses on ways to reduce conflict and build resilience, it offers an awareness not only of risk factors but also protective factors that can be used to sustain parents and children.

The book includes children's drawings and, in their own words, conveys worries, hopes, and ongoing attachment to both parents. The children's points of view, essential aspects of the book, allow readers--parents, teachers, lawyers and doctors--to better understand children and focus on their healthy growth and development.

Pedro-Carroll provides a clear view of what is possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
Finally, a book that separates the good sense from the nonsense! I found this book incredibly clear, straight-forward, and informative. It's nice to know that there are experts who really understand the awkward situations in which families -- and especially dads -- can find themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving beyond pop psychology
Finally a well written book that provides evidence based strategies to help children through the emotional challenges associated with divorce.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Single Parent Must Read This Book
I wish this book was a requirement for every parent seeking divorce. I have a yahoo group called Single Parent USA, and I'd love to make this required reading for each member.

(Someone asked for url: groups dot yahoo dot com/group/SINGLEPARENTUSA/)

This book gives a lot of practical advice about dating and being a parent. I see so many times single parents getting into relationships and just jumping in with both feet and not thinking about their children and what they are facing.

Every single adult deserves a social life, whether they are a parent or not, but you have to be careful and think of the kids. We all know that you can't just shut off the sex drive because you had kids and are single, but at the same time there is a right way and a wrong way to go about dating as a single parent.

This book gives realistic advice from both angles. A lot of single parent books are geared just to the single mother, but these days there are a lot of single father raising up the children most, if not all the time. This goes to both types of single parents equally.

I've read this book once, and I think I'll go back to again and again, just for advice on certain situations that will come up as my children get older.

If you are a single parent, the please for the sake of your children read this book. Having a relvolving door for boyfriends/girlfriends (that your children see), does effect your children majorly! You may not think it matters, but it does. Just go talk to some adults whose parents did that to them, I have and they were greatly effected!

Also, those single parents not sure about dating or hearing negative comments from family members, "You're a mommy/daddy, you don't need to date. Do you really need someone else to be happy?" This is the book that says you have the right to date and be happy with someone else and it gives several tag lines to throw it all back in their faces.

I only wish I'd bought it when I first got divorced three years ago!

Against the negative reviews this book got in the beginning. Perhaps you all make yourself out to be the perfect parent, but there are some of us who do need this advice and need this kind of help. And there are some that you need to slap them in the face with this book!

There is good advice in this book and even if the author does not have children she is educated. Just because you are a parent doesn't mean you know it all!

You should read this book, despite what those others had to say! It is good advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Frustrated Uncle
My sister got divorced about 8 months ago after an 8 year mariage and two children. She has been on a dating frenzy, leaving her children with sitters and relatives. I know she's upset and scared but the kids are going to and are paying. I got her this book to
try and help her be more sensible. She didn't listen to me or my parents who came off like lecturers. But the stories of so many parents putting things together after a break up has made a dent in how she considers what she's been doing. It's good to have a book with other voices. A video would be great.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's okay to want a grown up life too!
I am a devoted parent. I do everything for my kids and put them first. I know that it has to be that way because they're young and I'm the one they have to look to and rely on. But my own loneliness has just made me sink and feel so low. This book helped me understand that my kids can't meet and make up for my adult needs for understanding and companionship. That's a whole different world. I feel relieved hearing other single parent's stories about putting your kids ahead of you but still having to have a world of friends including male friends. I have begun slowly to date. Some of the stories in the book are a hoot and I have had a few corkers. I felt supported by the sharing in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars No one said it was easy
You know, no one said it would be easy but when you have kids, no matter what happens, you have to find a way to stand up and stand by them. The stories in 'Sex and the Single Parent' helped me find some strength and some humor in getting my son past his youth in one healthy piece. I'm trying anyway. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping my friends
I have so many friends who are single parents and it is truly upsetting to see how they are out finding a social life when their kids need them. I got this book recommended to me and have been buying copies for my friends. The advice is helpful in that it balances grown up needs with kid's needs. There has to be a way for people to be less neglectful and still have a life. This book points you in the right direction. ... Read more

Product Description
So begins the saga: In the initial visit with my son, I witnessed a child who was bright, smiled, yelled, stomped his feet and screamed. It was not that he could not talk, he would not talk.He had his own language, created in his mind to get his needs satisfied as a result of them not being met prior.I was told that he could only say 7 words, all in Spanish.I went to a corner on this initial visit and sat there with a book and a stuffed bear and waited.Ever so slowly, he approached me, would touch me and run away and giggle.Eventually, he sat in my lap and looked at me for a while, with his social worker, the foster mother and my adoption worker looking on he put his hand on my face and said “daddy”.This was not one of the words that he knew and it was not in Spanish……so it began.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an enjoyable read: I laughed, I cried, and I laughed some more :)
I finally sat down last night with hopes of multi-tasking (reading this book and catching up on my taped DVR: mindless reality TV)... I pick up the book while I have my shows playing in the background and honestly, I couldn't put it down...I laughed, a lot! I cried, I smiled and I laughed some more...

As I read your book, the events in similar yet different ways mirror some extreme events in my life... I identified with a lot of the things you wrote... I myself have found that my daughter has given me so much strength...kids are so amazing in doing that for us. Single parenting is like the mantra told to me by a dear friend in my first year of law school "take it one day at a time". I believe everything happens for a reason - there is a meaning for every event, a growth opportunity for all of us, we just need to identify it as an opportunity...this as you describe similarly in your book.

Thank you for sharing your story, and I am so grateful I bought the book...the messages will stay with me for a lifetime, and If I might add I will take some of stories, including the angel one, with me and share them with my little one...

This is a great, easy and enjoyable read that should be read once by all.
