4-0 out of 5 stars WEIGHT TRAINING FOR SKIING
Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Skiing (Ultimate Guide to Weight Training...) GOOD GUIDE WITH EASY TO UNDERSTAND INSTRUCTIONS & PROGRAMS

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Disappointing

When the Soviets tested potential ski racers the key desirable capability they were looking for was leg strength (60%) with specific focus on explosive power (plyometrics). The remaining attributes tested for were skeletal alignment (posture), flexibility, balance, reaction speed, and range of movement from center core through the hips, knees and feet (joints) - with special attention paid to range of dorsa flexion.

BTW neither the Soviets nor anybody else cares about upper body strength other than how it might be tweaked to improve posture or overly trained which might negatively affect flexibility.

So you would think a book so targeted to weight training for skiers would focus on lower body strength with special emphasis on enhancing both flexibility and range of motion. And would most certainly reference the bio mechanics required to be a good skier."The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training" ignores all these frames.

Rather it is a standard rehash for a general strength program - it might as well been written and targeted for badminton players and weekend anything.

Product Description
In 1948, the first skiers to experience the steep and twisting downhill trails of Mad River Glen had to traverse muddy or frozen dirt roads to get to their destination. The warmth of a country inn was a comfort on those cold winter nights and continues as a hallmark of the Mad River Valley today. Even with the condo boom that developed after the opening of Sugarbush on Christmas Day in 1958, little has upset the ambience of the 20-mile-long valley. The valley developed a distinct personality, attracting "ski bums" who exchanged urban pressures for a laid-back lifestyle that continues today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Snow Plow
I'm an advanced skier, former PSIA Instructor, and think this is the very best book on alpine skiing using shaped skis (have accumulated some 19 ski books in my home library).Harald Harb backs up what he writes with superb demos of pertinent exercises on green and blue hills, and additional skiing footage on black/double black diamond slopes. These demos are best seen in the 3 DVDs mentioned below. Chocked full of great "how to" information, the ESSENTIALS book contains the salient points of skiing from Mr. Harb's 2 highly successful earlier works:ANYONE CAN BE AN EXPERT SKIER I and II.Mr. Harb begins where ski turns start - the feet - and works his way up the body's kinetic chain in an easily understandable way.DVD demos of the ESSENTIALS book are available for purchase (3 of them) separately:"Tipping", "Complete Upper Body", and "Flexing & Fore/Aft Balancing."Recommend acquiring these DVD's too, however, the book stands alone for enormous instructional value. Finally, if you're a never-ever skier, you might want to start with the "Expert Skier" books and their DVDs, mentioned above. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cross country Skiing in Yosemite
Useful book, helpful info on trails. could be more detailed, book was in condition described and was shipped promptly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive description of Yosemite ski tours
This book has 34 or so ski tours at all levels in 78 pages. It covers not just the Badger Pass area but also Yosemite Valley south wall chutes (for advanced skiers!), Crane Flat north of the valley, Tuolumne Meadows, Tioga Pass to the east, and 3 Trans-Sierra tours. Detailed b&w topo maps trace each tour.

What's missing? An index would be nice (although it has a Table of Contents). Also, I would like the old ski trails described. These trails went down from the top of the downhill ski area (near Tempo Dome) down to Highway 41. The one still trail that's still maintained is described (Chinquapin), but what about Strawberry Creek. Old signs mark the run. Also what about the trail from Ostrander Lake to Buena Vista Peak or Horse Ridge? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the passionate ski tourer
Wow. Almost ten years since someone wrote a review of this excellent book.

In the 20 years since this book has been written, the Colorado backcountry in winter has become more popular for snowshoeing and AT/tele "big bowl" skiing.

The simple joy of ski touring has become a lot less popular.

This book is aimed at people who enjoy being out on skis all day and traversing through the winter landscape.

The tours range from novice tours that let people get their ski legs to tours where a person should be knowledgeable and comfortable deep in the Colorado backcountry. Many of these tours will take you off the beaten path and into places where few skiers go (or anyone for that matter).

The book is sans color photos and other pretty accouterments of more recently published books. These "features" are often better for impulse purchases than for actual information.

It is a "Just the facts ma'am" approach that is effective:
A brief tour description, mileage and elevation gain, directions to the TH,maps neededand a rating of the skill level of the tour. Each tour is pictured on a large scale topo map that will give you a general idea of the tour itself.

The only slight downside of this book is that in a few places, access issues have changed since the book was published (e.g. Mammoth Gulch).

With nearly 150 tours listed, it is indeed a book for every "serious front range backcountry skier".

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Colorado Front Range backcountry skier
This book contains easy descriptions of touring and trailheads within day-trip distance of the Denver area. While the "extreme" backcountry skier may find that most tours described lack the desiredexcitement, there are still quite a few gems, and for the more classiccross country skier this book cannot be beat.Check out Dawson's guide to14ers for the death-defying routes, but this book has everything to keepmost skiers entertained. Most of the expert terrain described requireslong approach routes, but every serious front range backcountry skiershould buy this book without question. ... One of the things I love about cross-country skiing is its diversity. Another thing is the easy-going quality-- you just go and enjoy the hell out of it, whether you're skating or track skiing or telemarking or runningaround the backcountry yodeling. The thing I DON'T like is how manypractitioners take it sooo seriously.Jules Older's book is a kick inthe pants. He has the right priorities. Whether he's talking aboutequipment, clothing, technique, skiing with your old dog, even waxing(which attracts the real fanatics!), you feel he's about to giggle. andit's contagious! If you'd like to learnabout a great sport, hear some great stories, and laugh a lot in theprocess, I'd choose this over any other book! Product Description
The early, romantic days of skiing in the West-the 1930s, '40s, and '50s-were a time of glamour and great excitement. Hollywood movie stars in the latest snow fashions shared chair lifts with the originators of "extreme" skiing. Skiers zoomed down the mountains with primitive equipment, relying on enthusiasm and their own brand of skill to take them successfully to the bottom. Otto Lang, Hannes Schneider, Errol Flynn, and dozens of other celebrities and even early Olympic athletes peppered these snowy slopes, having the time of their lives.

That era of fun and elegance was captured on film by famed outdoor photographer Ray Atkeson and ski moviemaker Warren Miller, who became friends in Squaw Valley in 1949. In this nostalgic tour of an earlier time, Miller reminisces about the places, people, and props that color the history of skiing in the West. His lively, firsthand account of the events that populate this unequaled photo collection is fascinating reading.

Ray Atkeson became a legend in his lifetime, taking over 40,000 photos of the pioneer years of skiing the West. Warren Miller has produced nearly five hundred sports films during his fifty-year career. He teaches skiing in Big Sky, Montana. ... Read more

Product Description
A comprehensive history of skiing from its earliest origins to the outbreak of World War II, this book traces the transformation of what for centuries remained an exclusively utilitarian practice into the exhilarating modern sport we know today. E. John B. Allen places particular emphasis on the impact of culture on the development of skiing, from the influence of Norwegian nationalism to the role of the military in countries as far removed as Austria, India, and Japan. Although the focus is on Europe, Allen’s analysis ranges all over the snow-covered world, from Algeria to China to Zakopane. He also discusses theparticipation of women and children in what for much of its history remained a male-dominated sport. Of all the individuals who contributed to the modernization of skiing before World War II, Allen identifies three who were especially influential: Fridtjof Nansen of Norway, whose explorations on skis paradoxically inspired the idea of skiing as sport; Arnold Lunn of England, whose invention of downhill skiing and the slalom were foundations of the sport’s globalization; and Hannes Schneider, whose teachings introduced both speed and safety into the sport.Underscoring the extent to which ancient ways persisted despite modernization, the book ends with the Russo-Finnish War, a conflict in which the Finns, using equipment that would have been familiar a thousand years before, were able to maneuver in snow that had brought the mechanized Soviet army to a halt.

More than fifty images not only illustrate this rich history but provide further opportunity for analysis of itscultural significance. ... Read more

I bought this book expecting great things given the FIS and IOC endorsement. What happen was that it forced me to sit down and read critically about my sport. There is alot of worthwhile information here, but there are also a lot of errors. It is very typical of reports about sports written by academics who do not ski.To say that because these scientists could not see "adominal muscules working, in xc skiing therefore they do not contribute to ski skating" shows blunt ignorance of the reality of the sport.Unfortunately, great scientific data is spoiled by wild conclusions based on observation not experience.Buy this book if you are experienced enought to know the difference. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Classic
This is a classic, classic ski book and should be read as a historical reference, a milestone, but nothing more. The modern ski technique is vastly different and much more efficient for the newer shaped skis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible about skiing
As a former racer and an experienced ski-teacher in Europe, I have benefited enormously from this book that was recommended to me in person by Prof. Georges Joubert when we met back in 1983. Later in 1993, when I mentioned this book to then the director of the ski-school at Grouse Mountain near Vancouver, B.C. Canada, the comment was 'Ah, the bible...' Just a glance on the technical analyses on the last ~100 pages will convince you that this is still the most resourceful aide to anyone seriously engaged in ski-teaching and ski-coaching. Yet, the first few chapters are easy to read and follow by anyone novice willing to learn skiing by his/herself, which was the original intention of this book.

Yes indeed, the Bible! I have no intention to deny many other excellent books written about various aspects of skiing. However, for ultimate understanding of the details of the alpine ski technique this book is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll find every thing on ski technique even after years
I know Georges Joubert, he is still very present on the scenary of ski competition in 2002.(at more than Eighty !) This book contain analysis which will lead you to understand fundamentals and key drivers of competition best practises.
Starting from the basics, I have got the chance to be coached by Georges for two years , I caught this gentle touch that keep me close to competition high standard requirements. I still enjoy ski, and may be because of Georges Joubert influence, I made a quick turn which lead me to a full life of business all over the world.Enjoy !

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and last word on modern ski technique.
This book is the absolute bible of modern ski technique. The best racers today are doing no more or less than what is in this book.If you want to become intellectually involved with skiing, then this book is better than all the meat-head instructors in Colorado, all the ski tips in the magazines, all the other ski instruction books put together.I wish Poudre or somebody would republish it, because I am always recommending it to beginning (and better) skiers, and my copy is falling apart from rereading it so many times. ... Product Description
White Heat is pure adrenaline -- a thrilling exploration of extreme skiing that pushes the reader over the edge with heart-pounding accounts of people who risk their lives on the fastest, steepest slopes.

Often obsessed and possibly crazy, extreme skiers and snowboarders are having the time of their lives facing death-defying challenges. But the extreme skiing life isn't just about the quest to finish first; it's a lifestyle made up of insane jumps, bone-breaking speeds, and world records -- not to mention the wild off-mountain social world, the flamboyant gear and slang completely unique to it, and, of course, the remarkable history of the racing champions and events that is its backdrop.

Wayne Johnson, former competitive skier and acclaimed novelist, takes us into the cult of extreme skiing populated by stars such as one-eyed jumping champion Jerry Martin, who held the North American distance record for more than a decade, and Vinko Bogataj, whose world-famous wipeout on ABC's Wide World of Sports gave rise to the expression "pulling a Vinko." Here are real-life adventures, everything from Shane McConkey ski BASE jumping the Eiger in Switzerland to Shawn White, the Flying Tomato, throwing 1260s in the halfpipe. Johnson, who has spent a lifetime on the mountains, also puts you in his boots when recounting goose-bump- inducing tales of high-speed downhill racing, Nordic jumping competitions, avalanche control, and the hip, ripping world of snowboarding.

If you've ever wondered what kind of nut would willingly choose to fly off a twenty-story ski jump, or have ever dreamed of living outside the usual boundaries, or just like to read about people having life-expanding adventures, then White Heat is an exhilarating thrill ride that will leave you breathless. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars When you can't be Skiing, read this book!!!!
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to jump hundreds of feet on skis, learn to drop explosive charges into avalanche zones or deal with a dying, severely injured skier as a First Responder? Wayne Johnson has personally done all of these things and much more. In addition, he explores almost every other aspect of the skiing life from the eccentric ski bum who tragically dies while living in the woods to the struggles of World Class racers. If you want a heavy classic, as some reviewers seem to desire, read, "1984" or the "Grapes of Wrath".If you want a teriffic book to inspire and motivate you this ski season, read this book. A great gift for any adventurous person in your life!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A taste of the ski life
An excellent read giving a glimpse at ski culture.I have been a ski patroller in the Midwest for over twenty years, doing it full time for the last seven years. I know patrollers that drive three hours to volunteer to patrol or drive all night to allow their children to race in the Upper Pennisula, MI.

To the best of my knowledge I have never met the author but I have skied Park City, The Canyons, Alta and other areas. I have stood in the patrol hut at the top of Jupiter lift with twenty five other patrollers performing an avalanche rescue drill on West Face.Getting from the hut to the avalanche site meant skiing the ridge in a sixty mile per hour whiteout.

The author accurately portrays the thought processes on rescues and opening and closing sweeps.
The author also gives a good representation of the various aspect of other snowsports including racing and snowboarding.

The author fails to inform the reader of the many mundane actions a patroller performs including the paperwork after the care for the injured has been transferred. Each incident requires an incident report and usually an investigation. While not part of the glamour and adrenaline, it is a vital part of the incident follow-up.

There are some readers who do not like the style it is written, replacing "him" with a stylistic "you" in some of the narrative.Although somewhat annoying, I do not think that is the main problem with the book. The main problem is it lacks focus. Is this a book where the author gives his personal account/experiences or a reference/who's who in skiing and snowboarding? It started out strong as I read about his stories as ski patrol and avalanche patrol but then it moves to ski racing and there are virtually no personal account on that. The same for ski jumping which has very little personal account and ditto for snowboarding, and freeriding. As a reader I'm left confused whether this is a reference book or more memoir/personal experience?!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb take on the culture, history and techniques of Skiing
I am a journalism professor who teaches writing and a non-skier who has both friends and colleagues who live skiing, which is something that I never truly understood until I read this book. To me, skiing always seemed a bit too dangerous, but I always enjoyed watching it and many of the rather heroic careers of skiing champions written about in this book were known to me - though not in the depth covered here. I flatly loved this book!!! It's exciting from the first page - and even I could feel my pulse starting to race and sense the love of this sport that dominates those who've made skiing an important - even central - part of their lives!!! If I were younger and a bit healthier than I am today, I'd have made skiing an important part of my life. The book is artfully written with exceptional prose to help the reader share the sensations felt by avid skiers. The author uses first, second and third person as appropriate, andemphasizes second person as both a form of direct address to the reader and to bring the reader into the narrative. A truly exceptional read that I'd recommend to all with a desire to know better the skiing life complete with it's subjective feeling as well as an objective history and description of technique. Simply superb!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour De Force
This wonderful book addresses the lives and life surrounding the extreme aspects of skiing (avalanche controllers, racers, ski jumpers, snowboarders, mountain patrollers, and a sundry feast of other characters), and readers will find it an inspiring and lucid examination of just what drives people to such extremes, be it a love of speed or heights or jumping off helicopters.Wayne Johnson has delved deep into the hearts of those who aren't content to live out their lives in a prescribed, socially acceptable manner, and he's written a fine book honoring the idiosyncrasies of their lives. It is a thrilling account, and the narrative is written as daringly as the lives it examines. You don't have to love skiing to enjoy this book --it's entertaining as hell and you'll be hard pressed to find any writer out there with the massive talent Mr. Johnson brings to his subject.Odds are that when you get to the end of the book you'll do as I did:you'll go back to page one and start reading it again.

Regarding an earlier review, in which the reviewer claims the book suffers from "enormous stylistic flaws," one has to wonder what planet he lives on (I laughed out loud at the absurdity of the statement). He has a problem with Johnson's use of second person narration, a perfectly valid and effective technique used by countless writers and essayist throughout history.I would direct the reviewer to the likes of Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, Gunter Grass, Italo Calvino,, Jay McInerney, Carlos Fuentes, John Updike, and many, many other gifted writers. One wonders if the reviewer would have been more pleased if the book had been written in an uptight, faux scientific manner, complete with footnotes and a good dose of pretentious Latin terminology. (Thankfully, author Wayne Johnson has spared us that scenario). In fact, by its tone and tenor (petty, plebeian), one wonders if this profoundly uptight reviewer was passed one too many times by Mr. Johnson on the ski hill. ...
