3-0 out of 5 stars diabetic snacks
Tried a chicken nugget receipe and my picky children loved it.So we need to try other receipes for a child recently diagnoised with Diabetes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kids' cookbook marginally appealing
Most of the receipes in this book I really don't think my kids will enjoy. They are not big vegetable fans and this has a lot of veggie-oriented dishes.I was hoping for more creative ideas, more low-carb snacks on the sweet side. Also, it's not a visually appealing cookbook.I decided to keep it, though, as it does have some receipes I can use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snacks for Everyone, Not Just Diabetics
Great snack, breakfast, lunch, and dessert recipes all kids are sure to love!An easy and fun way to try new foods, too.Every recipe is made from a short list of ingredients and are quick to make for anyone short on time.I can't wait to eat everything in this book!My kids will be so happy eating, they won't notice they're eating healthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I am using this cookbook to give to families that have children with diabetes.I chose this cookbook because the recipes are not long and involved and do not use specialty ingredients. The recipes are short, nutritious and each is followed by nutritional data.It makes it very easy for the children to count their carbs! 5-0 out of 5 stars I like all the Wei-Chuan books
The Wei-Chuan Publishing Company (apparently connected with the Taiwanese Wei-Chuan Cooking School), has produced a good number of Cookbooks, mostly dealing with Chinese cookery but also coveing other Asian cuisines as well. I own over a dozen of these now and I like all of them. More importantly, I like all of these books for tmuch he same reasons and, accordingly, I have decided to do a general review that applies to each of them and then provide a few individualized comments where appropriate.

Basically, the Wei-Chuan publications are authored/editored by several different persons but the format is largely the same. Each book is divided into logical sections (Meats, Vegetables, Appetizers, etc.) and nearly every recipe is accompanied by a good photograph of the result with some recipes having additional pictures of the preparation as well. This feature alone makes these books well worth the purchase. Another feature of this cuilinary series is that the books are written in China and, at least as far as the books on Chinese cuisine is concerned, the reader need have no issues with 'authenticity'. I personally also like the fact that all of the books are written in Chinese characters and then translated into English. This has has an added bonus of occasionally providing some unintentional amusement due to a particularly 'unfortunate' translation but I specially like it as I am teaching myself Mandarin and these books are excellent learning tools. I often take one on the plane with me when I travel (along with dictionaries) and can spend hours happily translating passages. It is amazing how often the actual translation of a recipe title bears little resemblance to the English title provided.

Finally, I have to say that the recipes in all of these books are interesting and he ones that I have tried to reproduce have worked out well. Mainly though, I just like reading through these books for inspiration and enjoyment. The money I have spent has been repaid many times over.

The We-Chuan books I currently own are as follows:

Chinese Cuisine- Very good introductory section. Recipes range from simple everyday dishes to exotic banquet style delicacies.
Chinese Dim Sum: Wel-Chuan Cultural and Educational Foundation -Great 'step-by-step' pictures for many recipes. Bit too much emphasis on sweet rather than savoury for my personal taste.
Chinese Snacks -More of the same as in the Dim Sum book. No 'step-by-step' pictures but I actually like this book better.
Chinese Appetizers and Garnishes - I haven't attempted much from this book but I am thankful for the great 'step-by-step' pictures provided.

Favorite Home Dishes Chinese Cooking-As the name suggests, most of the recipes are simple and, thus, easy to prepare.

Chinese Cuisine Beijing Style - Lots of Imperial Banquet dishes and many exotic foreign influenced meals that have been 'Chinesified'.
Chinese Cuisine: Cantonese Style - 75 Cantonese recipes. Good recipes with nice pictures but a sparse introduction.
Chinese Cuisine Shanghai Style- Typically good Wei-Chuan quality but probably my least favorite of the 'regional' Chinese cookbooks.
Chinese Cuisine-Taiwanese Style- Excellent Book. Some truly unique recipes I have never seen elsewhere. I love to browse this volume.
Chinese Cuisine: Szechuan Style- I love Szechuan food especially but I would still treat this book as a favorite anyway.

Indian Cuisine-A nice book but be aware that the recipes Indian dishes for the Chinese palate, not Indian.
Vietnamese Cuisine-Great recipes.
Japanese Cuisine-Nearly as good as many books I have that are written by Japanese chefs.
Korean Cuisine-My favorite of the We-Chuan non-Chinese cookbooks so far,
Singaporean, Malaysian & Indonesian Cuisine - My least favorite Wei-Chuan book so far. Somewhat interesting but I don't look at it much.

Finally, I have a new Wei-Chuan book on order and will continue to buy from time to time. I will review separately as I read these new books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for all skill levels
I bought this book along with the book "Chinese Dim Sum."I thought I would return this one if the recipes repeat.I was pleased to find out the recipes only repeat 5% of the time. The rest are unique and I look forward to trying them all.The directions are simple and direct. The folding techniques are vague but not too crazy. There are lots of pictures so you can see what you should have. This is definitely one cookbook I will be using often.

4-0 out of 5 stars really traditional recipes
This is a great recipe book that contains some very traditional Taiwanese food. The instructions are reasonably easy to follow but the illustration could have been more clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars For when I'm feeling ambitious...
I basically got this and a few other Chinese cookbooks from my parents when I moved out. I am half Taiwanese and love Chinese food, especially snacks and street food. Where I live now, I can get Cantonese dim sum, but not any other kinds of snacks and so once in a while, when I've got a full day, I will go through this book and make one of the recipes that I miss most. I am not exagerating when I say that it usually takes a full half day or day to make some of these. It's especially tough when I make some dessert and then realize at the end of the day that despite a full day in the kitchen, I still need to cook dinner. Don't bother buying this book if you never spend more than half an hour in the kitchen at a time.

I do really love the recipes. There are shortcuts if you can buy pre-made wrappers (ex: wonton). And many of the snack are freezable so you can make a whole bunch for future eating pleasure! ex: shu-mai, leek turnovers, dumplings... Note some are not as freezable, ex:yeast dough used for pork buns and red-bean paste buns.

I am not completely unfamiliar with Chinese cooking techniques so the recipes are easy for me to follow - the diagrams and simple pictures are sufficient for me. I do understand that it could be challenging if someone has no idea how what they're making is supposed to look like. Also, it does use ingredients, such as lard, that are not always found in US supermarkets.
I recommend this book for the home cook who either cannot get great Chinese snacks at the store or loves to cook and who once in a while has a day to devote to cooking.

My last point is about the Wei Chuan collection. I have this one and 2 on rice dishes. I like the way these books are organized and am thinking about buying one of the more general books, such as the one one Chinese Cuisine or Chinese Cooking for Beginners. Much of Chinese cooking (from observing my mother, grandmother and aunt) seems to be about tasting the food as you cook and eyeballing the amounts to put into the dishes. While the snack dishes require strict recipes, the other books were good for me to get an idea of the right ingredients to incorporate and approximate proportions. I'd love to know more about how others use the books, and which ones they like most.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Terrible!!!
I was really excited when I got this book...i cracked it open and couldn't wait to create my very own dim sums...to my disppointment, the recipes in this book was totally WRONG!!!There are key pieces of information that are not stated in the recipe and it's literally impossible to make it properly if you didn't have that information.I am tempted to burn this book.Really mad and it's a total waste of my time and money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great pop-ups, but a bit of a weird book
I have become a big fan of David Pelham and his pop-ups, especially the cat and mouse ones. This book is great to look at---the seaside animal pop-ups are amazingly well done and really surprising at times. However, the book is a little odd and a touch disturbing---all about a sister putting disgusting non-food items in her brother's snack to take on a boat, out of jealousy I guess! The text is rhyming at times and a little forced.I finished the book feeling as if I wish the pictures could somehow be disconnected from the text, and the sea animals left out of food! However, I am sure that is the appeal for many kids!

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious!
We have read this book to all four of our boys so many times it is barely hanging together! The premise is Sam's sister gets even with Sam for making her a bug filled sandwich in Sam's Sandwich. by making Sam a seaside equivalent. It is especially entertaining to the 5-7 year olds. The pop ups are very cleverly engineered (especially the lobster), and the drawings are super-real, which adds to the gross out factor. I liked Sam's Sandwich a little better, because it is a little easier for the kids to understand, but this one is still a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sam's snack Rocks!
I bought this book at a used book store and it's so great! I LOVE All of the Sam books. They're suposed to be for little kids, but I love 'em anyway! I love this one's pop-ups, the clever rhymes, and the nasty stuff Samantha puts in Sam's food. Like sand in the salt shaker, tar in the those little vanila creme sandwhiches, and jellyfish in the apple pie. Plus Sam has a little suprise for Samantha. ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Lot's of fun!
My 3 year old loves this book, and so does the whole family. The pop-ups are fantastic, the story distasteful enough to keep a kid riveted, but not offensive, and I am suprised it hasn't worn out from all the readings itgets. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Silly Chicks Review
Reviewed by Three Silly Chicks - Readers, Writers, and Reviewers of funny books for kids.

The Three Silly Chicks are so relieved. We finally understand why we sometimes have bad hair days. No, it's not our hair--it's those awful Scary-Hair-Fairies! We're also relieved to learn that we are not going crazy (contrary to popular belief). There really are Ink Drinkers, thirsty and sly, who sip our ink when we're not looking. And, well, we just knew we didn't snore. It's those dastardly Snorists, of course! The Chicks certainly don't snore.

This zany poetry collection is all about the pesky hobgoblins who create havoc in our lives. We think students will have a great time coming up with their own monsters. What about that big goon who lives in the washing machine and eats our socks? What a pain he is. Or how about the mischievous imp who steals our car keys whenever we're late? That guy needs a name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smashing indeed!
Andrea Perry has done it again! Her latest delectable confection serves up a bevy of baddies, responsible for irksome dirty deeds. My children (ages 8 and 3) went crazy for the creeps who drink ink, eat puzzle pieces and create henious hairdos for school pictures.Mrs. Perry's passion for poetry is obvious, and helps instill a love for rhyme in even the youngest readers. In my house, we're devouring The Snack Smasher---and rather impatiently awaiting the next poetic ponderings from the mind of Andrea Perry!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Smashing Good Time!
With a name like that, how could you not want to pick this up and browse through it.The kids picked this out based on the title alone, so I was surprised when we cracked it open and found it was poems.Luckily that was a delightful surprise! In The Snack Smasher and Other Reasons Why it's Not My Fault the author reveals the why to question that plague almost all children...why is my hair a disaster on picture day, why is there inevitably one puzzle missing from the box, and why the pretzels at the bottom are always crushed to pieces. This is a fun read and great for kids to practice reading out loud...these would make fun oral presentations for kids working on memorizing because of the way the poems are divided, it's a good way to challenge kids to figure out how it's meant to be read aloud.Readers here won't just be delighted with the poems, the illustrations are quite interesting too, really helping to bring to life the villains and mischievous creatures that lurk within these pages! The Snack Smasher would made an ideal read aloud, or as stated before...a fine project for memorization and oral presentation.I give this 5 stars for being plain old fun with great illustrations and a even a chance to expand young readers vocabulary!

Product Description
Who hasn't thought up a weird snack concoction and found it not only edible but downright delectable? Author Ron Wiggins brings 150 of the wackiest food combinations this side of pickles and ice cream-including dark chocolate dunked in red wine, Elvis' famous fried peanut butter-and-banana sandwich, and marshmallow ducks microwaved to puffy, crispy perfection together in this not-quite-a-cookbook collection.Wiggins was inspired as a child by his pastor, who stood before the congregation one Sunday and confessed to combining milk, powdered sugar, and a spoonful of Hershey's chocolate syrup and licking it off his fingers while listening to The Lone Ranger. Wiggins was hooked! For over 28 years, he has been on a mission to unearth the strangest (but yummiest) snacks imaginable. He's created a Web site devoted to weird snacks and includes recipes from readers of his column from all over the country. After learning how to make "Desperation Shepherd Pie," a "Popcorn Sandwich," and "Fishy Peanut Butter," you'll be chuckling all the way to the kitchen to invent your own creation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and fun
It's a gag book in more than one sense, but it's also a dream book, an escapist book, a health foodie's recreational fantasy book, and....

Speaking as writer and contributor....

Ron did a terrific job of editing.

Definitely a fun read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Through Adventure
Ron Wiggins knows how to have fun through adventure. As a newspaper columnist, he has amused his readers with his derring-do. Weird Snacks is fun through adventurous snack concoctions. Many of the snacks were submitted to his Web site [...], so there is a good variety of snacks. Two snacks that appealed to me are Roaches on a Raft (banana, peanut butter and chocolate chips) and Pecos Movie House Popcorn (dill pickle juice on popcorn).Weird Snacks is fun to read, and it's a great gift idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weird Snacks Cured My Appetite
A fun book to keep by the - well, no, not there - pantry maybe? It's fascinating to read what otherwise seemingly sane people will eat. We've tried several concoctions as listed, and, while dubious at first, have come to realize our own taste is quite pedestrian. It's fun to try new stuff, especially if it doesn't seem edible, but really is, and the author "spices" up the recipes with interesting tales and "tidbits".Well worth the price, if you steal it (just kidding).Makes a great gift. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eat and be Merry!
This is a really great follow up to the first book, Le Petit Appetit cookbook. As your children get older their tastes change and the way you cook and prepare food for them changes too. This cookbook makes it easy to transition your child to try new foods and get them involved in the process. The first 6 chapters go into detail about buying Organic, instilling good eating habits, and what foods could potentially be harmful to you child. It also has these really useful icons for each recipe that quickly lets you know if it's egg free, nut free, good to cook with your kids and so on. It's easy to use, has many tasty recipes and gets your kids involved in the kitchen. If only it would teach them to clean up after themselves too, then it would have everything!

Also, this book and her first book, The Petite Appetit cookbook: Easy, organic recipes to nurture your baby and toddler are perfect new mom or baby shower gifts.

3-0 out of 5 stars I don't think so
I have to say that I haven't tried the recipes yet but I don't think I will be doing that any time soon. First, I have a 4 year old and I don't think she would eat many foods from the book. There are many ingrediants to most recipes that seem to be easier to buy. Such as recipes for pretzels, breadsticks, pizza dough, granola bars etc, rice milk. don't people usually just buy those ingrediants??? as it is very time consuming to bake all this first before even starting the rest? I mean, these are also made with flour, and the only reason i could see making these would be to maybe avoid gluten. Also, what is lavosh? She says to use it to make roll up sandwhiches so I can assume it's some kind of tortilla maybe. What is that... is she foreign or something? I just don't see the sense in making a lot of this when you could buy them easily it's kind of a waste of my time. The other things use alot of ingrediants and the outcome I just don't think my daughter would even enjoy. Also, a recipe for strawberry milk? Come on! I don't know about this ... if I made everything from scratch then I don't have time to spend with my girl and it usually tastes the same to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starting point for parents/child care providers
This book is full of great snack ideas, which is what I needed as I ran out of ideas after a year of family child care.Contains basic information regarding buying organics vs. conventional.Great, user friendly format. She provides nice storage tips for the recipes and nice pointers on how to include children in the kitchen as well.I really like this book and will definitely pursue her other cookbooks to add to my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthful, tasty recipes
My family has enjoyed using the Salad People cookbook because of its healthful, easy-to-follow recipes. My oldest child is outgrowing the format of Salad People, so I thought this would be a great resource to help her become more involved in food procurement and meal preparation.I have my own versions of many of these recipes, but it is wonderful having a compendium of healthful, tasty food that our children and their friends will enjoy.

While this is not a book designed for children, my second-grader enjoys reading the recipes, planning meals, and coming up with a shopping list. The recipes are all easy to follow and do not call for difficult-to-find ingredients (some of the ingredients can only be found at the health-food store, but can be substituted with more common (often non-organic) ingredients from the regular grocery store.

Nutritional information on the sidebar is also a plus. The author also provides notations to let the reader know which meals can be packed easily for lunch, are dairy free, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Practical
This book is a great follow up to The Petit Appetit Cookbook (one of my favorites)! It has a great layout and plenty of information about storage and variations (two things I consider must-haves in a good cookbook.)Two great recipes so far: French Toast fingers and Curry Chickpeas. The chickpeas are something SO simple, but I NEVER would have thought to do it.Now they've become a staple in our afternoon arsenal.Another thing I love is Lisa's writing style - her intros to the recipes make the book fun to page through even when you're not in a rush to get something on the table. ...
