4-0 out of 5 stars good snake starter book
My six-year-old son and his first grade friends love this book! There's just enough information for them to get a general idea of a variety of snakes. Not overly technical.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing.

Product Description
Perhaps no creature has been as feared, mythologized, or misunderstood as the snake. The Snake Almanac reveals that the truths about these reptiles are as fascinating as the fictions. There are more than 2,000 species of snakes, and The Snake Almanac gives up close looks at some of the most beautiful, bizarre, and deadly - such as the gliding snake, which can "fly" from trees with the help of skin flaps along its sides, or the hognose snake, which plays dead when threatened, or the powerfully venomous black mamba.Beginning with the snake's evolution, Edward R. Ricciuti goes on to cover the anatomy of snakes and how they move, hunt, eat, breed, and perceive the world around them. He gives a global survey of snakebites - why, when, and where they occur, and the fallacies about treating bites - and examines humankind's attitudes toward snakes, from reviling them as the devil incarnate to revering them as gods.Full of lush illustrations, fact-filled tables and sidebars, and entertaining anecdotes from Ricciuti's experiences as a snake owner and observer, The Snake Almanac is a must-have for anyone interested in nature's legless wonders. (81/4 X 101/4, 228 pages, color photos, b&w photos, illustrations, tables) ... Read more

Customer Reviews (3)

1-0 out of 5 stars unrealistic and dangerous
This book has one of the most deadly snakes on the planet escaping. This book goes so far to make the snake a hero that there is a picture of a frog in the snake's mouth, but the snake is not eating her, he's "helping." I have many snakes and I realize the importance of teaching children that you have to stay away from them in the wild because kids don't know what is dangerous and what is not, and if their great book says that cobras only eat lizards and other snakes, are very helpful, and nice, they will not think twice about playing with it and then it will bite the poor child and if the child is lucky the snake will be non venomous. This book made me so mad that there is a deadly, highly venomous snake as the sweet and innocent creature who is just trying to be good and go home.Reality check to the writer the goose would probibly be dead and the frog and the rat would be food for the unfortunate, hungry, scared snake.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was funny, sad and happy all at the same time!
Hi! I am 6 years old and I love to read these books. This one was one ofmy favorites.Maxie and Mirabel are so funny. They will try anything toget find out about the snake. The are so worried. Maybe they should be butmaybe they shouldn't be.This is a great book and I think parents shouldbuy this book if their kids like to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book because my mom did it.
I would like this book even if my mom hadn't written it. It tells interesting facts in a way that is a story, not just a scientific book. This book was for sale at the scholastic book fairs, and it has sold 130,000 copies. Your friend, Will Canine ... Read more

Product Description
This booklet is about the responsible care andmaintenance of the most readily available invertebrate-eatingsnakes. (That's right, no mice!) These beautiful snakes are sold inpet stores at prices that invite neglect, and most are dead within 3to 6 months. Their care is best described as requiring methods thatare a cross between snake keeping and lizard keeping. The rough greensnake is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable of all the NorthAmerican snakes to keep in captivity, and a genuine affection forthese snakes was the primary reason for the writing of this book. Ifyou buy the snake, buy the book. 14 pp. B&W photos. ... Read more
