4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book has great directions for making soaps and colognes. There are 102 recipes. Pictures are in black and white but still very detailed. This would be a good book to use with scouts 12 and up. I think anyone who is into making soaps and colognes will like this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't try THIS at home
While the potpourri and cologne recipes may be fine, I strongly adviseagainst using his soap recipes, as the high percentage of lye isn't safe.If you wish to make soap, please invest in another, safer book--any of thefollowing three have wonderful recipes that don't run the risk ofdestroying your skin: The Natural Soap Book, The Soapmaker's Companion orThe Handmade Soap Book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Found the book interesting.

A good book with basic information about handmilling soaps andmaking prettymelt and pour projects for people who love soap making but can'tor shouldn't deal withscary chemicals like lye.She explains a lot of projects in this book that I have been baffled about for a while even withmy other soap books. This is a nice addition toanyone'ssoap library. The projects are user friendly.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
This is one of the wosrt books I have seen for soap making! It did not explain what she was doing, and it didn't give any info on where to get many of the required materials (such as molds).I've been a soaper for many years and I didn't always understand what she was trying to say.If there was a lower rating than 1 star I would give it to this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL BOOK!!
I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO MAKES CANDLES. THIS BOOK IS VERY DETAILED AND INFORMATIVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY USEFULL SIMPLE BOOK
What I really liked in this book is the beginning, she talks with details the general equipment and supplies, she presented each one with pictures, very nice. The projects are simple but very detailed with pictures step by step, there are nice ideias of different candles, the project Marble Slab is wonderfull, the candles looks like marble, it is amazing the effect she created. In general the book is simple and usefull and perfect to add in your library for more ideas of how making candles. thanks Chery, good job.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too simple for me
1. This small book does not go into detail about anything. I does not describe the candle making process very well.

2. Its what, 16 recipes? Basic high school arts and crafts stuff.. not for someone interested in new ( unique ) techniques.

3. You can google this information in 10 minutes. Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas
I haven't made any candles yet, but this book has beautiful ideas and the instructions are very understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe that no one has written a review for this!!
This book starts out with defining different materials, waxes, molds,coloring/scenting,and wicks. It tells you how to prepare the wick;how to level the bottom of the candle;and how to use containers found in all homes. It has sections on beeswax candles, making tapers at home, making your own molds, painting and applique candles, layering candles, making floating flowers by hand, imbedding, gel candles(small section),making stacked candles, hurricane(shell)candles, stencilling, wrapped candle ideas, stick candles for the yard, marbling candles, and frosted candles. This book includes templates, variations and tips in the sections and all pages are either full colored pictures or have multiple pictures. Many of the crafts are even explained with pictures to show the novice how to make candles.I have bought around 30 books on candles and I still like this very much.It shows you how to make candles from nothing but the wax and your hands.I can't say enough about this book... ... Product Description
Soapy Alchemy

Handmade soap is a living thing, the product of a kind of folk alchemy that has been lost to all but a small number of craftspeople and individualists in our society. Now, Merilyn Mohr has created a complete introduction to the art of home soapmaking -- a craft that appeals both to our sense of economy (consider the mounting costs of hand soap, detergents, toothpaste and shampoos) and to our sense of simple aesthetics.

With years of experience, including having operated a cottage soapmaking business, Merilyn Mohr demystifies the soapmaking process, taking the beginner step-by-step through the procedure, assuring success with the very first batch.

Illustrated, simplified directions for making: - fragrant hand soaps - inexpensive laundry soap - leather soap - insecticidal soap for plants - shaving lather - toothpaste - herbal soaps and shampoos ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I was very disappointed in this book.I should have returned it, but I didn't.I will more than likely sell it in a garage sale, or donate it to the library.

2-0 out of 5 stars yeech
This is the thing..the book does have some good recipes, however, it is incredibly boring, and i really do not like the way this lady jumps from one subject to another. Case and point: I want to learn about rendering beef tallow, ok? She is doing o.k explaining this and then suddenly, she jumps to lard, then how storing your already rendered tallow near onions will make it smelly, how unclean tallow will make your soap smelly, cooking potatoes in your smelly tallow to make it smell better...oh, what were we talking about? Oh yes, the process of rendering... More like the inner ramblings of a seasoned soaper pretending to have her own talk show while she makes soap.

4-0 out of 5 stars I found this book to be very good for the begining soaper
This book gives all of the basic information and includes lots ofrecipies. For a little book, it packs in a ton of information from thehistory of soap to your basic soap recipie to exotic soap recipies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I found this book to be boring and not at all helpful.I have never made soap but I am trying to learn. This wasn't something I found useful!

4-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL MANUAL
Book is very usefull because the author put how to do in every step of making candles. Every single detail is treated with the most absolute precision, starting from the supplies, pan, scale up to temperature, measurements, something that it is little rare to find in another books. I bought 9 books in one batch, all are very good, but this one shows the basic for a beginner like me.
thanks Eric, hope to see more books from you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent How to candle book
A fantastic "How to" book. From start to finish, great instructions and pictures. Very easy to follow and covers "Everything"! If you want to make candles, this is the book for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice....even for beginners
I bought the book with just a little knowledge of the candle making industry. The problem with the book is its not updated for the new technology and materials that are used in candle making today.Yes it does a good job of breaking down the VERY BASICS but thats it.You need to know more about the industry than this book covers.I got more information from watching videos on youtube and the different candle supply companies websites than the couple of books I recently purchased.Watch videos and get up to date information on new waxes and materials. Save yourself the $15 or whatever you may spend and research the internet and the big candle supply companies out there. They know whats new and what works

3-0 out of 5 stars When they say basic, they mean basic.
This is a great book if you've never read anything about candlemaking previously.I didn't realize it was going to be so 'simple'.It's extremely basic and I found it almost childlike. It's very easy to understand, has good pictures, and would be great if you are a real beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for true beginners
I started candle making several months ago. I wish I had had this book on Day 1. I pretty much figured out the basics on my own, but would have saved a lot of time (and mistakes) if I had had this book to start with. It's Candle Making 101: basic, simple, step by step, and lots of photos. A great book if you are just starting out. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information
This is really written for big turn of the century factory soap makers, not for the home soap maker, but there is a ton of information in it if you're willing to sift through to look for it. 4-0 out of 5 stars A fun and informative read
This step-by-step book is written in an easy-going style, as though the author is right there with you, walking you through the candle-making process. It has Do's and Don'ts and even some humor along the way. I also liked the candle facts that are sprinkled throughout.

It covers everything a beginner needs to know. An informative and fun read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Little Candle Making Book I've Seen!
I have to admit that I am definitely not a crafty person either (as the author states in this book), but I am motivated now to start making candles! I had actually considered learning this hobby as a way for a little creative outlet. I also wanted to teach my daughters something that they could use to make some side income. This book tells you everything that you really need to know about making your own beautiful candles. I am so excited to get started! I love the way that the methods are done step by step so that even I can't get lost!

5-0 out of 5 stars From A to Z
I bought this book as a gift for my girlfriend's mother who is big into arts and crafts, not to mention I need brownie points, but I gotta say this book over delivered on what I expected.

I thought it'd just be a simple "dip string and make candle" type book, but Jennifer is very detailed in taking the reader from the beginning of candle making, all the way to strategies for creating candles that will make houseguests and other visitors purely jealous!

Hell maybe I'll get my gf's mom to start a candle business on the side! Either way a great and easy to use book for quality candles. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I Would Rather Eat The Soap
I don't usually bash books, but this one really deserves it.

This book is a hack job on old trade articles from the 1920s on the subject of Soap Making from what I believe the publisher claimed to be trade journals. The publisher has done nothing to edit or update. They literally just strung the articles together. It is about as pleasurable as eating a bar of soap. I think eating the soap may actually be more enjoyable.

About Aromatherapy
ESSENTIAL OIL: An essential oil is extracted from certain species of flowers, grasses, fruits, leaves, bark, resins, roots and trees.Do not be fooled by "perfume" or "fragrance" oils, as these are usually man-made and contain little to no actual oils of whatever it is supposed to smell like.
AROMATHERAPY:A method by which the use of certain essential oils are either combined or used alone to promote healing & well being by applying the oils directly to our body or by inhalation.
SYNERGY:Combining two or more oils to bring about a more powerful effect than using just one oil.Mixing them together creates a chemical compound that is different from the lone oil itself. An increased potency can be attained with a synergistic blend without increasing the dosage.
CARRIER OIL or BASE OIL:An oil that has basically no aroma and can be used to dilute the highly concentrated essential oils, so as to use them for massage. For example:You may only need one drop of a particular essential oil for a particular treatment.Obviously, one drop won't go very far, so it is mixed with a carrier (base) oil to cover a larger area. Base oils are vegetable, nut or seed, many of which have therapeutic properties of their own.
The following is a list of some oils that can be used as a carrier oil, and some of their uses, depending on which particular problem you are trying to address:
• Sweet Almond: good for all skin types. Helps relieve itching, soreness dryness and inflammation.
• Apricot kernel: all skins types, especially prematurely aged, sensitive, inflamed and dry
• Carrot: premature aging, itching, dryness, psoriasis, eczema.Reduces scarring.
• Corn: soothing on all skins
• Evening Primrose: multiple sclerosis, menopausal problems, heart disease.Excellent for treating psoriasis and eczema.Helps prevent premature aging.
• Grape seed: all skins types
• Hazelnut: slight astringent action; good for all skin types
• Jojoba: inflamed skin, psoriasis, eczema, acne, hair care, all skin types; highly penetrative
• Olive: rheumatic conditions, hair care, cosmetics; soothing
• Peanut: all skin types
• Safflower: all skin types
• Sesame: psoriasis, eczema, rheumatism, arthritis; all skin types
• Sunflower: all skin types
• Wheat germ: eczema, psoriasis, prematurely aging skin; all skin types
In this book you will learn to mix oils, make incense, make scented and regular candles and more. All you need is collected here to make your own scents and use them to fill your home with an array of fragrances.
