4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of useful information...
My husband has just started beekeeping this year (2010) and although we don't have any extra beeswax or honey, I am looking forward to the time when I can utilize the information in this book to make candles, soaps, crayons, and other crafts.I'd really like to try the Encaustic Art, but it looks really hard...we'll see...maybe my interest in it will get the best of me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to crafting with beeswax
This book was my introduction to crafting with beeswax. The book has detailed instructions and beautiful detailed photographs to follow along with. Six areas of beeswax crafting are introduced to the reader: candle making, beeswax modeling, making cone shaped crayons, encaustic art (melting crayons onto an iron and then "painting" it onto paper), furniture polish, and making beauty creams and soap.

As I said this is a great introduction, and as such, sometimes there is only one project per category. I think this book is helpful for a beginner and if you find that enjoy these crafts and you want to do more of one the same, then you may either custom design your own projects (when applicable) or find other recipes or instructions from other books and/or sources. If you know and understand this before buying the book I think you will be very happy.

The photographs are wonderful and I found them very helpful. The different kinds of beeswax are explained and important melting safety tips are clearly written. Many different types of candle making are explained, some using sheets of wax that are rolled by hand and others that used melted beeswax. Dipping candles, hand modeling candles, and using molds, both hard and flexible are all included here. Five recipes for creams are included, and one soap that uses beef tallow (fat). Five wood/furniture polish recipes are here, one of which is made with beef tallow. Instructions to make the crayons are here along with tips for successful sketching with them. Encaustic art is clearly explained although it still seemed a difficult craft, and requires specialty equipment, which does not make it easy or inexpensive to try out. (I had previously read about it without accompanying photographs and didn't understand what was being communicated. Other instructions I've read elsewhere don't fully outline the proper materials needed, so this book did a great job of explaining it.)

A great introduction if you've never watched these crafts being made in person or if you are a visual learner and have a difficult time following directions that are not accompanied by photographs. ... Read more

Product Description

The only thing more romantic and mood enhancing than a flickering candle is a candle with the heavenly scent of essential oils. Craft your own, which will beautifully combine color, shape, and fragrance. In addition to instructions for melting, molding, and dyeing the wax, an aromatherapy guide will help you choose the right scent for that special ambience.
Amazon.com Review
Aromatherapy remains tremendously popular, and candles are of coursenatural components of this practice. Rhondda Cleary discusses the basics ofessential oils and perfumed candles, including brief guidelines on whatscents enhance what mood. But this is really not so much a book aboutfragrance (which it addresses almost glancingly) as it is about generalcandle making and decorating with candles, which it covers quite well.Cleary explains exactly how to make a molded candle and many variationsthereof (striped, mosaic, ice, embedded, floating), as well as dipped andbeeswax candles. The second portion of the book offers suggestions forusing candles in the home and garden: for everyday decorating, holidaycelebrations, table arrangements, and so on. Although the step-by-stepinstructions and photographs are adequate, they are not outstanding; wherethe book really shines is in its approach to making candles part of ourdaily lives and in encouraging us not simply to make candles but to usethem. --Amy Handy ... With a brief but compelling history of the candle, Catherine Bardeyintroduces us to a once-essential source of light that has lost none of itscharm through the ages. We may no longer depend on candles for everydayillumination, but we still rely on them to create atmosphere, evoke a mood,or enhance our decor. The book's second half is devoted to potpourri, which is given the samecareful treatment. A short introduction to scent in history--touchingconcisely upon perfumes, incense, and aromatherapy--leads into explanationsof several methods for creating potpourri (fixatives, drying, storing, displaying). This is followed by specific recipes for, among others, spring, summer, and autumn medleys; energy-boosting, relaxing, andromantic scents; and themed potpourris for Mother's Day, Valentine's Day,Thanksgiving, and Christmas. 1-0 out of 5 stars Truly appalling
Dangerous recipes - well, one recipe with a multitude of minor variations, dangerous instructions. Total lack of proof-reading. The only good use for this book is as an emergency substitute for toilet paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't imagine it being more complete.
I aspire to make my own candles for special occasions. I picked up this book because it looks like the only one I'll need. It takes you from candle-making (rolled, dipped or moulded) to candle decorating and when you're done with that, you learn to make your own candlesticks, candelabras, pots, holders, lanterns, sconces, and chandeliers. When you're done with THAT, you can create stunning displays based on color or season, decorating your home or for entertaining. Every single page has full color photos of the steps of the project and the finished project. You can simply browse the book as an art book - it's lovely. I love the folk art carving project and gold-leafing project. Bravo for a great craft book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elegant designs
When Gloria says "complete" she means complete. There are so many projects in this book i wonder if i'll ever complete them all. She has some of the freshest ideas i've seen. Very elegant in the designs and for the most part, easy to follow instructions. A book for all those interested in the elegant side of candles.

I don`t think this is a beginner book... shegives basic information and some projects about making candles, but it isnot very detailed. I think this is a book for intermediate and advancedcandlemakers. I loved especially the recycling ideas, using old glassbottles, tin cans and so on. Product Description
Do soap opera fans deserve their reputation as lonely people, hopeless losers, or bored housewives? No, according to C. Lee Harrington and Denise D. Bielby. These authors soap fans themselves argue that soap fans are normal individuals who translate their soap watching into a broad range of public and private experience. People who cut across all categories of age, gender, race, ethnicity, income, education, and ideology incorporate a love of the soaps into their day-to-day leisure activities. Interviews with soap opera viewers, actors, writers, producers, directors, the daytime press, and fan club staff members reveal fascinating details about the inside world of fandom and the multitude of outlets for fan expression clubs, newsletters, electronic bulletin boards, and public events.Numerous examples illustrate the pleasure fans derive from critiquing characters, speculating on plot twists, and swapping memorabilia. Examining the experiences that shape fan culture, Harrington and Bielby analyze the narrative structure and various aspects of the production of the soaps.Their examination reveals that the 'meaning' of soaps is complex, individualized, and not simply a reflection of the narrative content of the stories. The authors show fans who actively contemplate what it means to be a fan, and who adjust their level of involvement accordingly. Author note: C. Lee Harrington is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Miami University in Ohio. Denise D. Bielby is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
This book lacks enough detail on the basics and focuses too much on advanced projects to be a good beginners book. The photos are nice but often not very helpful. If you have experience as a candle maker, you might find some good ideas. True beginners should look to "Basic Candle Making" by Eric Ebeling, editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear and elegant presentation.
If you are only going to invest in one book -- this should be the one!In addition to instructions to create classic and creative candles, there are great explanations of wax types, molds, safety precautions, and more. All this information is presented with words of encouragement and enhanced with well-photographed examples.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring, and not much help to beginners
De. Bob should stick to soap. His candle making book is not for a beginner who just wants to know the basics in simple terms and get started.Although I am sure some of the information will be helpful to the more advanced, it was not what I was looking for to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentially Most Useful
I was first struck by the photo content. It seems that procedures to make every common type of candle (and several uncommon ones as well) are fully illustrated with lots of photos that make reproducing the results extremely easy to follow. Not only that but the authors helped to dispell my bewildernment over the many, many ingredients available on the market which are useful (or not) for producing special effects. For instance, the suggestion to forget gloss ingredients and use higher temperatures in making the candle is simple and highly practical.
I own or have looked through almost every candle book on the market, and I think this one is clearly the best resource book available.I just wish it were longer.
Finally, to my surprise, I discovered that this is the only book that is recommended by my primary ingredient supplier. They seem to agree that it is the most factual and accurate book on the market suitable for those getting started as well as for those needing more info as they scale up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best value!
Ingredient selection for candles can be baffling, but Dr. Bob covers the gamut and tells which work or when there is a better way to do things.Lots of projects with easily available equipment as well as how to use fancy molds, or even make your own molds!Over 250 beautiful color pictures make procedures and results easy to understand. The section on how much wax is needed for a particular mold is invaluable, and I personally love the section on wax characteristics.
The FAQ is quite complete and look for tips on the best ways to make or avoid mottled candles, glossy candles, and which special ingredients can be replaced by the right technique. This is a valuable book for scout leaders, first timers, and experienced candlemakers alike. But then, what would you expect from the authors of Essentially Soap. ... Describes, step-by-step, how to create decorative candles using basic equipment and both traditional and modern materials. This book explores various techniques including moulding, hand-dipping, marbling and carving, as well as how to add surface decoration.Amazon.com Review
Though quite brief, this guide manages to touch upon the important basics of getting started in candle making. Most of the designs are fairlystandard though nicely executed; a few of the ideas are a bit more unique, such as little clown candles molded from modeling wax to perch atop achild's birthday cake, jeweled pillars adorned with gold wax and colorfulbeads, or a bowl of real-looking fruits that are actually all moldedcandles. A more thorough introduction for those new to the craft can befound in Sue Spear's excellent Candle Making in a Weekend, but Candle Making Made Easy does provide a reasonably good beginning. --Amy Handy ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if you want to learn how to make the best scented candles around.
