5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, touching, and worthwhile!
Michelle's story is one of courage and determination.Soccer fans in particular will be interested in what she has to say, but even those who don't appreciate the sport should be touched by what she's endured.

Iespecially enjoyed her teammates' input and the humorous stories abouttheir time spent together.I'm a big fan of the Women's National SoccerTeam in general and really appreciated these insights.Michelle alsoshares thoughtful remarks about family and team staff members who haveinspired her to pursue her dreams despite her fight with CFS.

Sometimesyou don't realize how good you have it until you hear what someone else hasdealt with. This book is a very worthwhile read and may even help you toorganize your own priorities!

5-0 out of 5 stars A TRUELY INSPIRATIONAL BOOK FOR ANYONE
I am a young soccer player who suffers from CFS. After reading this book I became inspired to work even harder. It is a great read for any soccer player or anyone who suffers from CFS. A wonderful book! Thank youMichelle!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great inspiration
For those who battle hard and never quit, Michelle's story is a great inspiration and story of hope, faith and perseverance. Great details about the Olympics and the US Women's Team as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and inspiring story of a world-class athlete.
This really was an inspiring book. For anyone who has had to deal with injuries, much less a chronic debillitaing illness, this book shows how to approach such situations with courage and humor. It also brings up the importance of letting others help you through crises, whether they be teammates, friends, doctors, psychologists, or the clergy. I especially liked the insights into other National soccer team members. And it was very interesting to read about specific National team games, games which I watched in person or on television.I had no idea the struggle Akers had just to continue playing, much less competing at a high level. I would recommend this book for any athlete, whether or not they are dealing with injuries or illness, and I would certainly recommend it for young girls to show them what it means to be a committed athlete. ... Product Description

A Sac and Fox Indian, Jim Thorpe was born Wa-tho-huck ("Bright Path") in Oklahoma in 1888. His childhood was a mix of hard work on his family’s ranch, wild days hunting and living rough in the outdoors, and a succession of dreary, military-strict "Indian Schools" that sought to impose white culture on Indian children. Jim hated them and frequently ran away, but it was at one such school, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, that his life would change. Watching some student athletes practicing the high jump, Jim asked if he might try. Wearing overalls and a work shirt, he effortlessly cleared the bar on his first attempt—breaking the school’s high jump record. He was drafted onto the track and football teams by the school’s coach, Pop Warner, and went on to lead Carlisle to victories over the best college teams of the time. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Thorpe won the five-event Pentathlon with a score that would never be beaten, and the even more grueling Decathlon with a score that stood for 20 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for track-and-field kids
Jim Thorpe and Jesse Owens are great inspirations for my family of running boys. This picture book, with its simple yet dynamite illustrations, tells Jim Thorpe's story about as well as a straight biography could. You see him growing up, struggling to fit in, struggling for self-control, and finding his natural ability.I love the illustration of Pop Warner celebrating.

Jim Thorpe is an inspiration, and this book plants his story in the brain of even very young children. Thanks, Don Brown.

4-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding hero in his time
In this children's book awash in soft, delicate colors on every page, the life of the world's greatest athlete of his time, Jim Thorpe, is unfolded.

Beginning on his parents' Oklahoma farm, it tells of Bright Path's (Jim's Indian name) young life with his siblings, and continues through his unhappy school years. Jim was sent to boarding school for Indians to learn to live the white man's way, and it was during his later school years that Jim's natural athletic talent was discovered.

The book continues with Jim's amazing feats at the 5th Olympic Games in Sweden in 1912 where he won two gold medals, one in the pentathlon and one in the decathlon, setting records that were not exceeded for twenty years.

In his author's note in the back of book, Don Brown retells Thorpe's life, giving more detail about his family and sports careers after the Olympics. There are also references, a short bibliography and photographs of Jim Thorpe.

Don Brown has written and illustrated many biographies for children. Bright Path is for pre-school children to third grade but will be enjoyed by older children, and with the biography added in the back, adults will also appreciate reading this tribute to Jim Thorpe.

Armchair Interviews says: Well-told story of a wonderful athlete.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kids should know about Jim Thorpe
Author/Illustrator Don Brown captures the life of Native American athlete Jim Thorpe. You can't help but smile as Jim thanks the King of Sweden for declaring him the World's Greatest Athlete in the Olympic Games in 1912. A drawback is Brown's depiction of faces that portray the eyes as slits. This results in the characters appearing Asian. The Author's Note tells the sad story of Jim's confiscated medals and their return many years after his death. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Table football, better known as foosball in America (from German Fußball, "football") and many other names, is a table-top game and sport that is loosely based on association football (soccer).Although patents for similar games may exist from as far back as the 1890s, the game of Table Football as we know it today was first invented by Harold Searles Thorton in 1922 and patented in 1923 (UK patent no. 205,991 application: dated 14 October 1922 and accepted: 1 November 1923) The concept was conceved after Harold had been to a Spurs football match (he was an avid supporter). He wanted to provide a game that replicated football that could be played at home. The inspiration came from a box of matches; by laying the matches across the box he had formed the basis of his game. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Sport is the most universal feature of popular culture. It crosses language barriers and slices through national boundaries, attracting both spectators and participants, to a common lingua franca of passions, obsessions and desires.

This book brings to light the connections between sport and culture. It argues that although sport is obviously a source of pleasure, it is also part of the government of everyday life. The creation of a sporting calendar, movements of rational recreation and the development of physical education in the public sector, are read as ways of disciplining and shaping urban-industrial populations.

In addition, sport is examined as a principal front of globalization. The sports process draws together dispersed communities and generates economic wealth. The book demonstrates how commodification, bureaucratization and ideology are fundamental to the organization of sporting cultures.

Although the book utilizes methods and traditions from sociology, political science and communication studies, it is the first text to argue that culture is the focal point for understanding sport. Authoritative and accessible, it will be required reading for students of sport studies, sociology and cultural studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flo Jo and the Funny Suits
(3 elementary students: ...): It's a very interesting book. It tells about Flo Jo's one-legged suits and her unique personal style. It inspires people never to give up on something you love a lot. There were times when Flo Jo was worried she wouldn't be able to compete, but somehow she perservered through the difficult times. In this book you will find out that Flo Jo made many new world records in running. (We don't understand how she could sign autographs with her six-inch long fingernails!!) Flo Jo wasn't allowed to run in the hand off relay because her fingernails were too long. In the end, the the coacheslet her keep them (the second time). We would recommend this book for people who are looking for a good biography and love running. We think the reading level for this book is appropriate for grades 3 and up, or as a Read Aloud for grades 2 and up. ... Read more
