Product Description
Since the Revolution of 1910, Mexican society has undergone a profound transformation, characterized by the disempowerment of the landed aristocracy and the rise of a new ruling class of plutocrats and politicians; the development of a middle class of white-collar professionals; and the upward mobility of formerly disenfranchised Indians who have become urban, working-class Mestizos. Indeed, Mexico's class system today increasingly resembles that of Western industrialized nations, proving that, while further democratic reforms are needed, the Revolution initiated an ongoing process of change that has created a more egalitarian society in Mexico with greater opportunities for social advancement. This authoritative ethnography examines the transformation of social classes in the Cordoba-Orizaba region during the latter half of the twentieth century to create a model of provincial social stratification in Mexico. Hugo Nutini focuses on the increased social mobility that has affected all classes of society, especially the rural Indians who have taken advantage of education, job opportunities, and contact with the wider world to achieve Mestizo status. He also traces the transfer of power that followed the demise of the hacienda system, as well as the growing importance of the middle class. This description and analysis of the provincial social stratification system complements the work Nutini has done on the national class system, centred in Mexico City, to offer a comprehensive picture of social stratification and mobility in Mexico today. ... Product Description

The Second Edition of Worlds Apart: Social Inequalities in a Global Economy focuses primarily on social inequalities in the American context. It is the only undergraduate text that provides a sociological framework for analyzing inequality within U.S. society as well as analyzing the relationship between global stratification systems and internal systems of inequality. Author Scott Sernau places each issue and dimension of inequality in the context of a changing global economy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction
Words Apart is pretty much essential - as a study of inequality it's a perfect primer and as an introduction to the world (and, most importantly, the logical and ethical foundations) of Sociology it's the kind of textbook you hold onto even after that early-morning Soc class.

This type of context and analysis would greatly benefit our world were it to become the standard (aside from the hysterical pandering and mindnumbingly uninformed talking points that stand for discourse). It's a compact, breezy and nearly comprehensive foundation to build upon and I recommend it for anybody. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the class system
When I first read this book's predecessor, it changed my perspective on America forever. Citing hundreds of empirical studies, Dr Rossides lays out the contours of the class system in pain staking details.

This book is not a casual read. It is a college style text book that requires attention to access. The effort, however, pays off handsomely. Solipsists should stay away from this book as the empirical justification and inferences will bore them. Realists, and all admirers of a priori and empirical knowledge, will find it both deeply revealing and disturbing.

This book is an astonishing intellectual achievement. I have read thousands of books in my life. This book and it's predecessor influences my thinking everyday, even 12 years later.

1-0 out of 5 stars I have read better Social Stratification books.
I feel that this book does not go into depth about stratification of class and groups as much as it should, I used this book for a college class and did not like it. I think that other books on Social Stratification are much better than this one. The author jumps aroung issues instead of discussing them, and uses redundant termanology throughout a sentence, paragraph and even chapters. Throughout this book when the author trys to make a point the reader can become lost and confused due to the author dancing around the main point (or Issue) by using terms like, "By and Large" and many others to complete a thought, that render the sentence unintelligable. I think that the editors are also to blame they should have deleted that redundant statements made throughtout the book when necessary. Other than that I do not believe that this book should be used on a college level for Sociology. ... Read more
