Product Description

In the late nineteenth century, general-interest magazines began to reach an unprecedented number of readers and conveyed to those readers diverse messages about the meaning of masculinity in America. Over the next fifty years, these messages narrated a shift from Victorian masculinity, which valued character, integrity, hard work, and duty, to modern masculinity, which valued personality, self-realization, and image. In Creating the Modern Man, Tom Pendergast studies the multifaceted ways that masculinity is represented in magazines published during this transitional period.

Pendergast focuses on the rise of mass consumer culture, demonstrating that consumerism was a key factor in reshaping American notions of masculinity as presented in popular magazines. Whereas much scholarship has decried the effects of consumerism, Pendergast treats consumer culture as an energizing force in the American magazine market. He suggests that such magazines offered men new and meaningful visions of masculine identity and argues that men actively participated in restructuring the masculine ideal. Engaging a wide range of magazines from American Magazine to Esquire to True, Pendergast demonstrates how these publications presented masculinity in ways that reflected the magazines' relationship to advertisers, contributors, and readers.

This fascinating study includes such African American magazines as the Colored American, Crisis, Opportunity, and Ebony. Pendergast reasons that the rise of modern masculinity opened the way for African American men to identify with normative masculine values. As white men reinvented the idea of the "self-made man" for a new era, black men struggled to negotiate a meaningful place for black masculinity in a culture intent on denying them access.

The first complete investigation of the representation of men in American magazines, Creating the Modern Man makes an important contribution to our understanding of these publications, both as elements of mass culture and as interesting institutions in their own right. Pendergast takes readers inside the complex world of magazine publishing, demonstrating how magazines slowly yet surely help create the cultural images that shape societal gender roles.

Product Description
The endurance of the Frankenstein narrative as a modern cinematic myth is undeniable. Its flexibility has produced classic and contemporary horror films--most notably the Universal films of the thirties--but it has also resulted in unusual hybrids, such as musical horror-comedy (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), hyperbolic parody (Flesh for Frankenstein), and science fiction (the Alien and Terminator series). This sourcebook provides a complete guide to all of the story's filmic incarnations--including essential information such as cast, creative personnel, and plot summaries--and also guides the reader to relevant primary texts such as scripts, posters, production histories, and newspaper clippings. Utilizing an approach that is both popular and scholarly, and including spotlight essays that deal with contemporary academic approaches to the subject, The Frankenstein Film Sourcebook reveals the depth of the cinematic range of interpretations of a classic modern myth. ... Product Description

There has recently been a move towards the domestic as the new "avant-garde" in contemporary art and design practice. In stark contrast, however, the maintenance of home remains a daily struggle in many parts of the globe. But wherever we are, one thing is clear: "home" is profoundly symbolic. The domestic sphere is a highly fluid and contested site of human existence that reflects and reifies identity and values. Regrettably, much of the dialogue around the home has taken place as separate conversations within disparate disciplines. This new, lavishly illustrated interdisciplinary journal is the first forum wholly dedicated to the critical understanding of the domestic sphere across timeframes and cultures.

Product Description
Joel Chandler Harris was internationally famous in his own time and has a surprisingly broad scholarly and popular following in ours. His portraits of slaves and former slaves, particularly Uncle Remus and Free Joe, poor whites, and Brer Rabbit, the archetypal trickster hero, have influenced many other writers, including Mark Twain, Charles Chesnutt, William Faulkner, Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and a wide array of children's authors from Beatrix Potter to A. A. Milne. Harris also left a lasting mark on popular culture, most clearly manifested through Disney's Song of the South and at Disney World attractions featuring versions of Harris's characters. He singlehandedly preserved and made internationally famous the Brer Rabbit folktales, the largest body of African American oral folklore that the world has ever known. Additionally, Harris was a major New South journalist who accelerated the process of reconciliation between North and South and promoted racial tolerance after the Civil War. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great starting point for further reading
What this book will give depends on what you're hoping for from it. If you're wanting a single book that will give you explanation, historical context and insight from the key participants in the late 60s-mid 1970s religious phenomenon that's come to be known as the "Jesus People movement" or simply the "Jesus movement", this probably isn't the one. There are only fairly cursory explanations of exactly what the movement was (essentially, hippies and "outsiders" to the established Church experiencing a Christian rebirth created their own religious structures, often communes, because of distrust of the traditional Church) and no real interviews with key participants like Larry Norman, Lonnie Frisbee, or Duane Pedersen for example. But that's because this book is not INTENDED to do that: it's a guide for further research.

As such, it's excellent with hundreds of notations about articles and books about the movement from the easily locatable (articles from LOOK! magazine) to things that might require more digging from local newspapers.

Also, those whose primary interest in the movement is the music from it that birthed what's today known as Contemporary Christian Music (like me) will find a chapter toward the end invaluable in guiding you toward albums outside of the easily found Love Song, Randy Stonehill,Larry Norman, and Resurrection Band(later known simply as Rez Band or Rez).

BOTTOM LINE:
If you don't know WHAT the Jesus movement was, don't start here. Get Paul Baker's Contemporary Christian Music: Where It Came From, What It Is, and Where It's Going which is a better overview in general.

If you've already read that and want to know what to read next, this is the ideal place to look. If you're passionately interested in the Jesus People, this tome is indispensable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" Guide to the Jesus People Movement
"David Di Sabatino's bibliographic guide to the Jesus People Movement pulls off something exceedingly rare in the musty world of academic reference works--it manages to be an exhaustive, 'must-have' for anyone looking to research the movement, even as it provides a thought-provoking, and--this is the really hard part-- entertaining sense of retrospection for those readers who were a part of the 'Jesus Revolution' in their youth. This is an indispensable guide to a phenomenon of recent North American religious history which is only now beginning to be recognized for its widespread and lasting impact upon evangelical Christianity"--Larry Eskridge

5-0 out of 5 stars From someone who was there during it all...
I leafed thorugh this work and really started to weep because it really brought some great feelings back. This was such a great time to be a Christian. I grew up at Calvary Chapel, and really appreciated the faith that began way back when... so, anything that tells about that time, I am all for it. God bless those who perservered from 30 years ago and are still walking with the Lord.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite the compendium of factoids!!
Wow!!

This thing really has a lot of citations in it, stuff I didn't even know was going on during that time... and I was there for it! Well, for some of it, anyway. Great discography section. Love those tunes from Larry Norman and the Love Song band. This brought back some great memories. Can't wait until he actually puts together a written work. I emailed him a couple of times and he says he is taking his time working on it. Can't wait!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lot of work put into this compilation
The author certainly tracked down anything and everything that had to do with the Jesus freaks. Quite amazing, really. If you were ever going to do research on this subject, this volume is indespensable. Well worth the money. ... Read more

Between 1936 and 1955, Hollywood significantly changed its portrayal of Hispanics in motion pictures. This change resulted from the demands of the Production Code Administration, which required film makers to eliminate the more offensive stereotypical Hispanic images. The entries are arranged in chapters, with each chapter devoted to a single year. Within the chapters, the entries are listed alphabetically by film title.
